Tiger Wood’s $100 million car crash

Print print Email email Share Share

Tiger Woods is a money machine, and, while many fans might think he earns most of his money by winning golf tournaments, it’s his outside commercial endorsements and ventures that bring in 90 percent of his money.

He’s made an estimated $1 billion in endorsements in his 13-year career, the most of any athlete ever, far eclipsing Michael Jordan’s athlete-as-mega-business model of the 1990s. Sports Illustrated estimates he’s now bringing in almost $100 million a year pitching products.

What this means: Woods is not dealing just with medical recovery, marital strife and legal headaches following his car crash last Friday morning. Enormous financial issues are at stake.

Woods has become the $100 million-a-year man not only by consistently winning major championship titles,

but also by translating that into a winning image off the course. He was one of the most recognised faces on the planet, without a whiff of scandal in his wake. No steroid accusations, tabloid pictures of late-night partying, strippers filing paternity suits, police reports, or any of the other issues that have turned many famous athletes into endorsement pariahs.

Long term damage

The worst thing that’s been said about him is that he needs to better control his often-petulant temper on the golf course - a trait that his boosters have pointed to as part and parcel of being supremely competitive.

I have talked to some experts on sports endorsements and the value of celebrity-hood - none who wanted to be seen jumping on Woods at a vulnerable moment by being quoted by name - and the consensus is that only some of Woods’ commercial money-makers are at current risk. But some damage has already been done to his long-term brand.

Let’s break down the numbers.

Unless the story turns out to be far more sordid than what is hinted at now, it appears Woods is safe on his deals with Accenture, a global management, consulting and technology-services firm that sponsors him. Ditto for his arrangement with the EA video-game series, “Tiger Woods PGA Tour.” It’s a top seller, and buyers are unlikely to be swayed by whether or not he was cheating on his wife.

The same is true for Tiger Woods Design, which Forbes estimates contributes about $10 million annually to his income. In this company, Woods lends his name to far-flung projects - general golf-course developments - under construction from Dubai to North Carolina. A course in Mexico is expected to begin construction in a few months.

However, some of his largest endorsements - brands with more mainstream images - could be threatened if Woods dithers and the personal story gains a tawdry steam. With a large pool of athletes to choose from, large companies are extremely reticent to tie their products to anything with the whiff of scandal.

His biggest money-maker is Nike. Woods wears Nike clothing from head to toe, and with the exception of his putter, uses only Nike clubs and balls. Sales of golf equipment to wannabe Tiger duffers is an enormous business for Nike. Woods signed a new multiyear deal with Nike in December 2006, and, though the terms were not released, his five-year deal in 2001 was widely reported to be worth $100 million.

Another company susceptible to changing public opinions about a celebrity endorser is Gatorade. In March 2008, Gatorade introduced Gatorade Tiger, Woods’ first licensing agreement and his first deal with any beverage company. Golfweek reported that the deal was for five years and could pay Woods as much as $100 million. Woods even picked out the flavours himself: cherry blend, citrus blend and grape.

Another potential problem for Woods is Gillette. In 2007, along with soccer star Thierry Henry and tennis player Roger Federer, Woods signed with Gillette as part of their “Champions” campaign. The deal was estimated to be worth upward of $20 million. And when GM ended its $7 million deal with Woods earlier this year, which earned them a spot on his golf bag, the empty place was picked up by AT&T for an undisclosed amount, but rumoured to be nearly $10 million a year.

A lot of money

Some damage has already been done, and when you’re dealing with stratospheric numbers like those for Tiger Woods, that’s a lot of money. Even if Woods takes a 10 percent hit on his endorsement income going forward, that’s $10 million a year, or $100 million over the next decade. A very expensive domestic incident.

The next few days will be critical in seeing if it gets worse. Where was he going at 2:25 a.m.? Why couldn’t he drive his SUV around the same fire hydrant and tree he’s avoided hundreds of times during the years he’s lived in that Florida compound? Did his wife, Elin Nordegren, smash the rear window of his Escalade in a frenzied effort to get her husband out of the wreck, or was she chasing him with the club and smashed the window in a furious rage over published reports of an extramarital affair? Was Woods taking prescription drugs? (Depending on the type of medication, under Florida law, Woods could be exposed to charges under the state’s DUI statute, which outlaws driving while impaired by not only prescription medications, but even some over-the-counter meds.) If so, which prescription pills was he on? Any psychotropic drugs could be a body blow for the superstar whose charm is in large part his easy, all-American, trouble-free persona.

The longer Woods waits to explain what happened, the more the tabloid fodder will grow. When Kobe Bryant was charged with sexual assault in 2003, he quickly held a press conference in which he admitted his infidelity. It was a key moment in which Bryant levelled with his fans and his sponsors. Woods has to make the same decision, and fast.

His statement posted late Sunday on tigerwoods.com only scratched the surface.

While admitting the accident was “embarrassing” and saying “I’m human and I’m not perfect,” he also summarily dismissed the many rumours as “false, unfounded, and malicious.”

Woods wasn’t more forthcoming, instead saying: “I deserve some privacy.”

His corporate sponsors might not agree. Honesty, although painful, is the only option to ensure his trademark stays strong.

Honestly, the man does not own the damn public an apology, except to his family. For Chris sake, you make money off the man when he's up there even when he's done one wee mistake. Get over it and leave him and his family alone. Why don't you focus on the BUSH administration and the crime they have committed in invading Iraq?

Posted by Olive, Nairobi, Kenya on Dec 07 2009

It would be easy to forgive one 'transgression' as being only human but six.....and counting! That's a record even where I come from. It certainly has dented Tiger's image which even the best golf will not successfully erase. There will always be a big BUT associated with his wins and money.

OMG!!!! This thing is a little out of control...

Posted by ladyjgolf on Dec 07 2009

I think that some of 'crap' is just that...CRAP. People need to keep in mind that the number one sports figure in the world...can NOT keep all of these so called mistresses private or in the dark about who he was.,...and did not anyone see him with them>>> get real people...a lot of this CRAP is just for the MONEY$$$$$$ And, please...let's let it die out...after all, there are 2 young children in this. He had admitted he was a bad boy and it's OVER folks. Let this family heal. Ane that is all I have to say...at this time!

Posted by Lori on Dec 07 2009

I would hope this will soon end for the sake of his family and the sport. My goodness he the man didn't kill dogs, shoot himself, or hit and kill anyone while driving his car. I say lets please move on let this dry up and blow away until something more important comes along and it will, just give it some time.

If I was Tiger I would not worry in the least about losing any disgruntled sponsors. I would live off what I have saved of the billion dollars earned so far plus the millions I will keep winning in Golf Tournaments every year. If that runs out then start to worry...

Posted by Mark from ohio on Dec 07 2009

His sponsors should set up a fund for the spouses of cheating husbands and advertise it. It would help take care of the poor kids that have to deal with unfit fathers like him. The emotional scars it inflicts on the children can last forever. But we will bury our head in the sand and forget about the ones that matter most. Tiger has his millions and his wife won't leave him but when those kids are older and they look up thier dad and see he cheated on his mom he can look in their eyes and explain it to them. They will be the lost souls who will need help or maybe they will continue his great legacy he has started for them.

Posted by motherbear on Dec 07 2009

I, nor my children will purchase anything he represents. He has told the world that the mother of his two beautiful children is not worthy of his faithfulness. He would still be cheating if he hadn't gotten caught. We used to know him as TIGER now we know him as SNAKE! This has affected our whole family terribly. Elin is a beautiful young mother. Tiger, PLEASE just go away!

Tiger should know that the media would find out about his extra marital afairs. I am personally dissapointed in him for the repeated multiple cheatings. Anyone can make 1 mistake. But 1,2,3,4,5,6,+. Come on Tiger. A man in his financial situation, healthy wife and children should be more greatful and have respect for his family. I know his parents taught him better. I'm sure his father loves him, but,is very dissapointed.

The man apparently has an addiction problem. Pornography may also be involved. If a barrage of his 100's of seamy text messages make it to the public, the way people will look at him will be forever changed. The real choice is to try to protect his image as best he can by paying off those who consented to have sex with him, or, ot acknowledge his problem before being exposed, and let the chips fall where they may. Human nature would dictate taking the first course. A chance at healing and redemption lies in the second.

Posted by cheetah on Dec 07 2009

Wood is a cheetah not a tiger. He continues to try to escape manning up to his failure as a real man. A real man would put his family FIRST and man up to his poor judgement. In Cheetah's last statement he says all news is malicious and false to try to gain time to pay his way out of his adulterous life style. This shows what he is all about, as another person commented a SNAKE. How dumb does he think his fans are! Elin needs to leave him and his fans need to boycot his endorsed products. The Tiger we all were lead to believe as an Amercian honest family role model is a Cheetah. Throwing hush money around to silience the ho's is showing his family that he's a snake and things very little of his family. He needs to stand up and say it is it is and stop trying to snake away from it.

Posted by Bean on Dec 07 2009

His is truly a fool or an egomaniac if he believed he could keep this out of the public eye forever. Look at the women he chose to cheat with. Many of them seem to be exhibitionist types....did he think they wouldn't turn him in for a moment in the spotlight or some money? It shows you how out of touch he is with reality. This was not just a one-time transgression, he seemed to have been emotionally involved with these women (or at least some of them) in a tacky, sordid double life. I really don't know how he and his wife could ever get through this. You could never trust him again. My heart goes out to his wife, children and the rest of his family. He's a snake. It is his and his family's life... not ours. He does not owe his fans or the public an apology. If he did apologize it would be only due to his public image/persona, it wouldn't likely be authentic. We have grown to adulate his previously flawless image, now that he has shown that he has flaws, we would like to publicly vilify, humiliate and decry him. Does this not reveal the flaw within ourselves? There is always good and bad, pros and cons to everything in life, and this image that we know as Tiger Woods is no exception. Let us not judge Tiger for what he has or hasn't done. This issue is private to him and his family.

Posted by Someone on Dec 07 2009

Like Fredrik said it, "I've lost my respect for Tiger". Just making any comparative analysis of the women he supposedly, and his wife, will most certainly make one conclude that Tiger could be suffering from some depressant moments --perhaps the loss of his father? Just hearing one of them admitting that he "slept with her atleast 20 times" is depressing; but there are two sides to a story --perhaps the ladies are lying, but he seems to know them, just from the voicemail heard.

WHO CARES? Really, The man is a superb golfer. His personal life is his business. Unfortunately, the general public has a misconception that because someone is in the public spotlight that we have a right to the details of their personal life. We do not. It's a sad life for those who feed off of this. When you are at work, you are at work. Once you get off of work, all your little secrets are yours. If you were in the mall with your company logo on a T shirt and people started asking you work related questions...are you obligateted to answer? No you are off work and on your own time. Tiger is a golfer. He is not obligated to to live up to your standards. Any "wrong doings" are his to deal with...just like yours are. Let's watch some golf.

There appears to be a pattern of reckless behavior and disregard for his own image and the most important relationship in his life. The fact that woodie used body guards and old friends to arrange these encounters and continued them on regular basis sounds all too familiar. Woodie is not someone that should be up as a role model or endorsement figure. The corporations that continue to have him as a spokesperson can pay his hush money and should provide free nike shoes. cellphones , gatorade, gillete products in go home now tote bags. Maybe trojan condons can have a big name spokes person now too.

What Tiger did - the cheating - is not a crime and I know today we little people are supposed to be tolerant of this six-timer, but do you think if it were Arnold Palmer or others do you think they would get a free pass for this outrageous behavior considering he packaged himself as Mr. Dad and Mr. Cleaver rolled into one. Tiger has been protected and now he was some "Tigers" on his tail. Years down the road, he will be a flash in the pan and be remarried with more children possibly from a mistress and may become a broadcaster. His legacy may not be golf but his voracious appetites for other women than his wife. What goes around comes around.

This is ridiculous! The car crash cost him about $5,000. The car crash isn't his problem, his problem was that the National Enquirer was going to print an article about an affair. That article, would have started the other girls coming forward. Whether Elin's "reaction" would have been behind closed doors or caught on film breaking a car window with a golf club-- the basic issue of his infidelity is unchanged. We WANT and apology, we WANT an explanation, we WANT a video in his house and bedroom with the ability to time travel and rewind and pause on the most interesting and prurient parts But he doesnt owe us because we want it. and the fact that we buy his products doesn't mean a thing. Our answer to his marketing isn't to demand private information-- our answer is NOT TO BUY!!! But the press doesn't sell stories with us not buying...so instead we get what we WANT and he OWES and NOW

My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and children. I know what they are going through. I just went through the same thing almost two months ago... My husband cheated on me and I found out about it. I can't eat, sleep or concentrate. Our children are suffering right along with me. SHAME on you Tiger!! You should have been grateful for what you had...your beautiful family, a home and so much more. But no, you had to look for something "Extra". We, as wives, strive to please our husbands, family and everyone around us and what happens to us? We are tossed to the side and mistreated. What is happening to our world when the majority of the people want to sweep something like this under the carpet and say "He's only human"? What happened to the wedding vows...the promises that we make to one another as husband and wife? Does that mean nothing to people these days? Tiger, you better ask God for forgiveness because only he can help you now!

Remember when Zach Johnson told Stewart Cink about his previous days play out of a sand trap and what the rules stated in that instance? Zack said that Cink should have taken a penalty. Cink said “I’ll be the poster boy for that” and told the officials. He was promptly disqualified and they showed an official driving him back to the club house in a golf cart. The rule was later changed. Tiger would have never been honest and stood up for the betterment of golf rulings if it meant that he would be DQ’d. Remember when Tiger stood there with a big smile on his face while fans where moving a big boulder so he would have a shot? Remember when Tiger hit his golf shot and the ball went on the roof of the clubhouse/restaurant? They looked for that ball for 32 minutes then resumed play with Tiger having a clear shot to the green only 80 yards out with no penalty. I am sick of the officials bending over backwards so Tiger can save a stroke and sick of Tiger letting it happen because he knows the rules. I am really tired of watching tournaments where another golfer may be leading the tournament but the camera is still on Tiger instead of the person in the lead. I am really tired of watching videos of Tiger with his Dad and all the hype about what a wonderful relationship they had. I am sure the other golfers had good relationships with their Dad’s and we don’t hear constant brain washing about them. I am glad that the truth has finally come out about Tiger and I hope all his sponsors, the sports media, his wife and his fans walk away from him.

He will never be able to stand proud in front of his kids as they grow up, never will he be a good role model. Tiger has played his last game... and lost it. Tiger's wife should do what is best for her and her kids-leave the man who cannot be true to her. She deserves both payout and her freedom including custody of the kids. One can only wonder if she has been exposed to STD's... In the event that she decides to stay on, the kids deserve a more stable environment than a head-of-household with no moral compass and a spouse who might think that is ok.

Posted by maggie on Dec 07 2009

The media overkilled this by now! Tiger does not owe any apologies to the media, his endorsement companies and definitely not to his fans. The only apology he OWES BIG TIME is to his wife and kids. Tiger Woods' fame is from his high profile career, not from his infidelity (although the media helped that). Although I think Tiger is a mad man for what he has done to ruin such a family and now his rep, I still think fans and media back off from his personal life. Nobody will ever know what really went on behind "closed doors" of their relationship except for Tiger and Elin and family. But hey, thats their business, not ours. Its unfortunate that gossip mags will make a huge profit from Tiger's crazy infidelity and those mistresses will make big bucks from helping ruining Elin and her kids' life. Yes, Tiger is an idiot for prowling after other women, BUT, those women are just a s idiotic going after a celebrity married man!

I have lost all respect for him but not that my respect matters to him personally but it may financially. I feel sorry for his wife and of course the children are the innocent victims in all this again. Can't people just show some respect to the ones they love ?. Idiot.

Posted by Jeanne on Dec 07 2009

I am so saddened and disappointed in Tiger. I truly believed he was not just a better person than what these stories portray (if, indeed they are all true), but also smarter. We all know how the media jumps on all celebrities. Would this have even been in the news if it had been you or me? That's an unequivocal "NO"! Absolultely no one would care. Is it wrong, yes, but is it our business? Your private life should be your private life. And, I do agree with one of the earlier posts, he was able to keep this absolutely quiet for 31 months - really, who are we kidding? And, everyone knows when someone of his recognizability goofs, people just keep coming out of the woodwork. I feel sorry for the children most of all. His father was such a role model for him and now what has he done to his children? I can only hope this wakes him up and he can become the father and husband he should always have been. According to everything we have read (and we know that's not always accurate)his father certainly set a great example for him. Another thing, his father continually is brought into the mix and how disappointed he would be - but did this start before or after his father's death - could this be his way of dealing with his grief? Has he ever been able to deal with it properly? Not that that would excuse his behaviour, but could it explain it? He is, we all know, an intelligent person and what he did is just plain dumb. I sincerely hope it will soon be over because I truly believe he has helped the game of golf and brought it to heights never before seen and I hope this does not destroy that.

Sorry Tiger doesn't deserve to be allowed to "move on". He's a serial liar and cheater who makes millions selling a pristine image to the public that turns out to be a lie. He does owe the public a real ackowledgement of his immoral deeds not some canned lawyerspeak. The reality is that he is an arrogant spoiled scumbag who needs some serious comeupance if he is really going to grow and change.

We are only quick in passing judgement! That is a man who is successful and at just 33 worth over a billion dollar. Even with this more than a million women offer theirselves to him for nothing. How many of us can look to God and judge him? Tu face, Essien, Adebayor and many more are holier!!!

Doug said "he will continue to be the biggest magnet for tv viewers in the golf world. Add to his golf persona the recent scandal and people all over the world will be anxiously awaiting the next tournament he participates in. The ratings for his next appearance could be record breaking." That might be true - but for all the wrong reasons . . . I might watch just to see if the gallery will be calling Tiger bad names from the side lines. I sure hope it happens.

Disgraceful and disgusting. Tiger Woods has destroyed his image, period. A role model is not just about being good in one's chosen sport. Lifestyle matters a great deal. No parent would ever want their child to grow up like him now.

Like elin the gold digger would marry him if he was a working class man? Puh money talks his a Biilionare. Which billionare doesn’t have affairs and doesn’t cheat on their partners. Why are people pretending that cheating is something new? Get over it! Like how many of you have cheated on your partners and how many of them know that they have. How would you feel if you’re in the spotlight and your secrets were exposed?

When as a society are we going to stop making excuses for bad behavior? As to leaving Tiger alone--not going to happen. If he wanted to be left alone he should have just golfed. Instead he sold himself for millions and millions of dollars of endorsements since he was 20. Like it or not, Tiger is a celebrity. That started when he was on the Mike Douglas show at the age of 2. Team Tiger spends millions on his squeaky clean public image. Tiger should have known better. As high profile as he is he should have kept it in his pants. What was he doing in Vegas and other nightclubs anyway when he is married with kids? When you become a Father you need to change your partying lifestyle. If Tiger wanted to be an alley cat he should have stayed single. No one forced him to get married. While Tiger may surpass Jack Niclaus's record in golf-he will never be the class act that Niclaus is. He is nothing better than a tom cat.

I wonder what Tiger's father would have thought of all this. Maybe it's best he's not alive to see his son's shame. Also I wonder if Nike is going to change their slogan..."Just Do It" seems a bit inappropriate now.

Posted by poor_tiger on Dec 07 2009

I think Tiger is just another celebrity sports/superstar who is human as we all are. Maybe his wife wasn't satisfying him? Maybe they had domestic problems which is why he chose to seek the company of other women? Not anyone's business really. The guy is a superb golfer, which is why he's at the top. I say the media has over-amplified and milked his "story" for the most they can get out of it. At the end of the day, he's still one of the top golfers in the world - and everyday men and women have numerous affairs. He's not the only one.

Posted by Brenda on Dec 07 2009

The problem is that Tiger sold his image, both on and off the course, to the public by doing endorsements for companies. If he wanted privacy he should have stuck to making a living just playing golf. Children aspire to be like him and now he has let them down. He needs to think about his children and how he would like it if somebody cheats on them when they get older. Little girls tend to seek men like their daddies for a mate. So all you Daddies with daughters, better treat the mother of you children how you want your daughters to be treated by their spouses.

Posted by vistor123 on Dec 07 2009

Really? So, cheating on your spouse with 6 different women is a "wee mistake"? WOW. Is it just a wee mistake because of who he is, I don't really understand what you mean? We all make minor mistakes from day to day, but when you knowingly cheat on your spouse as often and with as many women as he did, I would think that that's not a mistake, wouldn’t you? And no, it's not any of my business what he does just like it isn't any of yours, but honestly, we're all drawn in by this, if we weren’t, why are we all leaving comments and discussing it? It’s a private scandal gone public because of his fame and who he is. No celebrity ever has privacy, it’s a damn shame, but that’s just the way it is

Tiger does owe his fans and those that purchase products because he lends his endorsement, an explanation. He chose to participate in public competition, has done it well, and has invited attention through doing just that. If he wanted to remain unknown, he could have done that by golfing for fun with friends. Tiger is considered a leader in his field, we have every right to hold our leaders to a higher standard. That is why they are called leaders. In turn, those leaders should behave with nothing less than integrity.

For the longest time I couldn't figure out this Tiger Woods fiasco,I mean it was boggling my mind.I heard a psychologist on the radio say that he thought it was the excitement of the hunt.A lesson learned from Zoology is that many animals dont breed in captivity. In a more complex sense Tiger finds a great part of his sexual satisfaction from the hunt, someone wild and pursued. Now granted to me thats a curable behavior, and it explains a motivation, especially when his wifes better looking than the others. It also explains why Tiger with his money didnt just hire an illusive, gorgeous, never tell super escort. It wouldnt be a natural hunt, left up to that factor of chance, and real life excitement. Now if he ever realizes the greatest sex in a marriage comes from something much costlier and exciting, the act of surrendering ones self to another,he will be able to have the best sex with the same person forever. Oh wait a minute...that makes just to much sense in this convoluted mixed up world to sound right now doesnt it.What was I thinking??????

All of us makes mistakes; it's how we fix the mistakes that matters. His appology on his website is not an apology because he understands his character flaws, his apology is actually a "sorry-I-got-caught" statement. He still has to understand that his actions over the last 4 years show that he needs to seriously work on his character in this area. As for his sponsors; they will kepp making money off him without doing anything as long as the public keep bying products/services. It show that Nike, Gatotrade, EA Sports are willing to support an individual no matter how devastating he is to his family, his friends, his own foundation youth and the millions of youth who follow his every move. If the sponsors do not make a stand in public against what Tiger did, they are condoning his actions.

This is not only about tiger cheating. It is about his friends and handlers covering up and facilitating this cheating. It is about not lying for 3 years to someone you love. It is about a lack of respect for family. It is about Tiger believing all the hype all the adulation, that he was more then a mere man. He has not just stumbled, he has not simply faltered, he has chosen a path where integrity was just for show.

Posted by Tosin on Dec 07 2009

If he had cheated in a game of golf then he would have been excluded for life. BUT if you are billionaire who abuse your wife and children then he needs our sympathy. Keep it up Tiger. You are in good company of men who abuse their family. And we wonder what is wrong with the world.

Posted by MAXIMUS on Dec 08 2009

His IMAGE is tarnished mainly due to the fact that although he got lucky with his wife, the girls he cheated with are kinda skanky barfly types, that any regular dude could get with in a drinking situation. Mostly, his products are sold to men and we don't care, but sponsors might care that his IMAGE is no longer a CLASS ACT - since he's spent so much time in funky town. But, he sells Buicks so that shouldn't be a problem there. The women might not buy the Nike stuff though and they do a lot of the shopping. The black women might not buy anything, since apparently they're not good enough for him. He could probably pick up a Trojan sponsorship though. It's SLOW NEWS SEASON until the New Year - so poor Tiger is gonna be stuck on the cable loop until then, unless someone famous dies or some sh_t.

Lady Di, thanks for pointing out the grammar error... then again, Tiger is human like everyone else and i don't see any reason why people should be all up in his family business... This is something he has to fix and heal with his family, not the public. Yes he has endorsements and his image might change if for real he's having an affair, but that doesn't make him a monster, after all, how many men can stand up and say i have not once had the thought of cheating on my spouse or maybe even made an effort to. The truth is, the press ought to focus on more pressing issue and quit trying to ruin another successful individual's career... i know it's all about the money and news for them, but common, think about the damage being done to the person in question, it's not like he hurt any one of us except his spouse if really he was cheating on her... we should learn to keep our noses out of people's business...

Please, I'd rather know the weather,it's cold let me turn the heater!

Ok so Tiger Woods asked for us to respect his privacy… Is he in any position to make such a request? I agree, when it comes to the children, privacy should be respected. But Tiger is a grown man. Some sports news sites like Dozensport.com say he slept around and used his 'public image' to bed women, now he wants us all to back off. The switch of fame cannot be so easily turned off, Tiger.
