Obafemi Martins shoots Eagles to World Cup

Print print Email email Share Share

Against the odds, the Eagles have finally landed.

It took the individual brilliance of once spurned striker, Obafemi Martins and the recuperating Yakubu Aiyegbeni to secure Nigeria a berth in next year's World Cup taking place in South Africa courtesy of a 3-2 win over Kenya in a hard-fought match in Nairobi.

The possibility of Nigeria qualifying looked bleak 16 minutes into the game when Kenyan skipper Dennis Oliech, finding space in the Nigerian area, blasted home to send his compatriots into ecstasy and millions of Nigerians, into despair.

Pressure, pressure

The Eagles rallied, mounting pressure on the Kenyans who remained resolute, holding their lead into the second half. As the game wore on, the Nigerians sensing the ticket slipping away from their grasp, persisted and were rewarded on 62 minutes when Martins pounced on a rebound of Osazee Odemwingie's header, shot past the Kenyan goalkeeper to draw his side level.

The Eagles took the lead three minutes later when Everton striker, Aiyegbeni, in the crowded Kenyan box, capitalised on the deflection of an Obinna Nsofor volley to send Nigerians watching the match into a frenzy.

The Eagles, believing they were finally on course for a fourth World cup appearance, resorted to knocking the ball casually around and were punished for it in the 78th minute.

Capitalising on a lapse in the Nigerian defence, the Kenyans floated a loose ball in and Allan Wefende connected to make it 2-2.

The goal was just the shot the Eagles needed to swing into action and, five minutes later, Martins shot Nigeria back into the lead.

Tunisia humbled

Qualification for the World Cup was made certain following Tunisia's defeat in Maputo. An 83rd minute goal ensured that the Tunisians, who had led from the beginning of the second phase of the qualifiers, failed to make it to their fifth consecutive appearance at the World Cup.

With the outcome of the matches in Maputo and Nairobi, Nigeria finished on top of the group with twelve points. Tunisia ended up on eleven points.

It a sign that all hope is not yet lost for the country afterall. Who would have believed that Nigeria's flag will fly in the first ever world cup to be hosted by an African country? It is the real miracle of Baba God. Come to think of it when the Harambe Stars scored first with no sign of our equalizing going by the lakadaisical display of our Super eagles. However when it mattered most they played as if there would not be tommorrow. The corrupt leaders should also be aware that their time is up. They should borrow a leave from Borde George's travail. Surely Nigeria will triummph one day.

Amudu does not have a team yet. He is a good coach. Those big boys are just arrogant guys that do not recognise his authority. Bolaji, please try your hands on coaching and give me a feedback on what it feels like.

NEXT you guys are kind of getting tired of the Breaking News we know you guys for. I was expecting more details in the news...I had to go to BBC to read more about the match. Why won't we be looking up to foreign media houses to hear our stories and news. BBC reported the news before NEXT and it was not one line. From my NEXT I expect more.

Great to see the senior do us proud ... But kudos to the Mozambique they did the second part of the job. Just hope the coaching crew learnt from their mistakes. The World cup is too fierce to be taking things for granted. Love live the Super Eagles ... Long live Nigeria

Thank God for the win and eventual qualification. But Amodu must go. He is not only not good enough to coach the Super Eagles, his personality is not in any way inspiring. His dour and fallen shoulders looks during matches is even worse than the siddon look pose of Christian Chukwu. Pray when was the last time you saw him on his feet dishing out instructions to the boys. No, this man cannot and should not take us to the World Cup. Let him take a cue from Maradonna, Argentina's coach; even when they played so badly, you cannot take away the man's passion and his players played the game of their lives for him. But Amodu's face portends of defeat and despair each time we play. LET HIM GO NOW PLEASE. Meanwhile Camoroun is leading Morroco in Casablanca; while Togo and Gabon are still tied at 0-0. And the Brazillians are warming up on the pitch in Doha for their match against England which starts in a few minutes. Finally, watching the Mozambique and Tunisia live in my sitting room as well as all the matches I mentioned through free to air cable tv was fun. But AMODU MUST GO. UP SUPER EAGLES

Shuaibu has taken us to the world cup, but let's face it, he is not technically proficient and the match with Tunisia in Abuja also showed that he is tactically inept. I think he should be replaced by a Stephen Keshi or Samson Siasia/Oliseh combination who will stand no nonsense from the players and impose their game plan on them. Why do we always discard quality and go for mediocrity in Nigeria?

Posted by Adebayo on Nov 14 2009

Although we have qualified our defence needs to be worked on because it is as porous as a basket. Anytime the Kenyans come forward you always felt like they were going to score. Only a team looking to be disgraced would go to the World cup with a defence like that.

Posted by boli atepa on Nov 14 2009

We are of course happy and should jubilate. We will be fooling ourselves, however, if we think this team is prepared to excel at the World Cup. They are anything but Super. It's time to roll the sleeves and work hard. First, Shuaibu Amodu does not have the goods, and new coach - Nigerian or foreign - should take over. Secondly, senior citizens as represented by Kanu and non-perfomers in the likes of Utaka should be shown the door respectfully. It's time to inject young blood and make this time really Super.

Amodu is the first Nigerian coach to qualify the Super Eagles to the world cup.He is ONLY coach to qualify the Super Eagles TWICE to the world cup (2001,2009). There must be something about this man. When we mention Westerhorf-remember he was in-charge for 3yrs before we qualified for the world ctp and 4 yrs before we won the Nations. I may not be a fan of some of Amodu's tactics but I give him kudos. Bravo Shuaibu!

May be we should hire Pastor T.B.Joshua as the coach of the Super Eagles...! This man said early today b4 the match that eagles would win 3-1, whilst Mozambique would win 2-1 and that Eaglets too would win on sunday...! He equally told the Ghana under 21 last time they would beat Brazil in the final on penalty shoot-outs. There's something in this man that could be exploited for our soccer development. He could be a man of God after-all. Bravo T.B. Joshua, a no de among them o..(lol)

No one should insult Amodu. To qualify Nigeria for WC on two different occasions is a great achievement.Weldone Shuaib! Well, can Nigeria afford a first rate foreign coach? Can a foreign coach deliver the WC? If the answers are no then what we need is a team of good quality indigenous coaches around Amodu. Nobody should thank Mozambique....they need to be in the 2010 Nations Cup too.All they have done is help themselves...Indeed we have helped Mozambique.... they should thank the Super Eagles.Up Eagles.. straight to SA

How I wish it could be copied and e mailed them - nothing like a good dose of true words to open his eyes. But really, Amodu must go. Meanwhile Cameroun beat Morocco 2-0 to qualify for South Africa. Togo beat Gabon 1-0. And a great game of football is being played out between Brazil and England in Doha. No scores yet

Nigeria's qualification shows the way Nigeria is, dis-organised, lacking team spirit and indolent. However once and again things just work in our favour, i must give particular kudos to Osazee Odemwingie who , not only in this match but others, has shown a lot of the positive attribute you would want to associate, with the team nay the country. I am a patriotic Nigerian, but we need to learn the lesson that we cannot always be relying on luck, to get things done.Adequate preparation would always result in good performance, i hope this is a clarion call to put our house in order before the mundial in 2010.

We thank God. I don't like Amodu, but still, he has now won us two (2) world cup qualifiers. The first time, we got another coach to take the eagles to the world cup. Now we are saying the same thing. Worse case, let us get make him an assistant to a 1st class foreign coach (A Scolari for instance. But not the likes of Vogt or Bora or the dregs of the coaching world). But Keshi or Oliseh as world cup coach? Please....... And Siasia, after losing a 2-1 lead in the 65th minute against a 10-man German team casts doubts on his technical ability. Somebody was talking about a Dutch Coach, apart from Hindink, where are their coaches and even their teams?

One thing lacking in the current Nigerian team compared with the 1990s team of Amunike and Amokachi, is that the players lack pace and fitness. This is why the opposing players are always running rings round them and tearing the defence apart. We need a team built around a few experienced overseas players and young, fit and hungry local ones. The team needs speedy strikers and creative midfielders to stand a chance on the world stage.

super eagles made it at last, its good news anyway, but i hope bad management of the govt and nfa lead to the wombling situation in our campaign for this world cup, it start as the responsilities of the government to put the round pegs in the round holes, we footbal fans are tired of having ex militaries at the helm of affairs of the football body, does football need military tactics?, absolutely no, we need more viable coach with a diciplinariAN TOUCH, we need to re arrange our cards and make sure we are on the right track, GOD SAVES NIGERIA FROM THE EMBARRASHMENT : the first time the african continent host the world cup, its a big achievement for africa, but if not for the grace, the giant of africa in terms of populations would have watch the tournament as a spectator or at home, the tragedy was saved by grace of narrow escape to victory, the challenge ahead now should be steady, focus and patriotsm at the highest level of super eagle campaign in south africa, we should celebrate less and focus on standard preparations and challenges ahead.

So TB Joshua predicted 3-1 for naija and it ended 3-2. and he predicyed 2-1 in mozambique and it ended 1-0. What has this got to do with'prophesy'. People will see what they want. And yes Amodu qualified us for 2 world cups, bt in those qualifications, did he beat any team Nigeria is not expected to beat like cameroun or ivory coast. Guys we are talking world cup, we'll be playing Brazil and England not bafana bafana and mali. are u so used to mediocrity. I dnt think he shld be sacked, he deserves to be in south africa, but we need a fine white coach. yes white. and pls, delete scolari. The guy's a loser. Between, Mozambique's coach is dutch and they play really good football. they dnt have great individual players but they have good organisation. No Nigerian coach can get us that.

Lets thank Heaven 4 makin us get there, all kudos 2 OBA MARTINS. The presidency should get a competent coach that 'll challenge the rest of the nations in 2010 world cup and stop shearing the national cake!

Posted by Kelechi Ekezie on Nov 14 2009

The keynote here is that Amodu has handled the eagles four times! Does it mean there's no one better? This is nothing to get sentimental about..we're talking about being professional now...Amodu need not be sacked...a technical Adviser can be hired to work with him..while he remains Chief Coach....

It is a false dawn. Only losing would have forced the change that is desperately needed. Now, we will wear the fake cloak of qualification to hide the multitude of sins, incompetence and mediocrity that is the current state of our national football. Joining stable and well organised teams, particularly from Europe and South America in WC 2010, we won't pass the knockout stage. I'll take any substantial bets.

It is interesting seeing the posts here. westerhof made 2 attempts before qualifying for the world cup. Recall he took over from a Nigerian coach (James Peter?) just before the last match was played in the run-up to Italy 90. We lost the match (under Westerhof) and the ticket to Cameroon eventually. He qualified for USA 94, but he had to wait for the very last match to go through - a draw. That was somebody who had Okocha, Oliseh (the greatest passer of the ball in Africa at the time), Rahsidi Yekini (serial top scorer in Portugal at the time), Amuneke (one of the finest left winger we have ever produced), the mesmerising Thomson Oliha, the stylish SiaSia, the sturdy Keshi etc. There is no way you can compare the talent available to Westerhof to the 2nd-rate players that we have today. Westerhof had direct access to the presidency, does Amodu with his black skin enjoy that? Nigerians - doctors, lawyers, students - are all football experts. One guy analysed the errors of Mounrinho to me while in Chelsea to the extent that I asked him why he would not apply for the job of the chief coach of the team. Today, 50 people will be asking for Mikel to be included while another 40 will say no. If the coach listens to any side, the other side will pounce if his team fails. As for the face of Amodu while the match is on, does anybody remember the impassive face of Tele Santana (Brazilian coah - 1982 and 1986). He had an imcomparable team in 1982 - nobody can easily fault that but he lost without even chewing gum like SAF. Olumide says that Scolari is a loser - where? He has a world cup trophy under his belt. That is a huge achievement. Nothing can ever take that away. He made a serious impresson with the Portuguese national team even without many established names. And Chelsea? coaching a club will always be different from coaching a national side. And of course, he had problems with the players. Anyway, we can pick another 1st class foreign coach. The insistence on his being white baffles me. Experience is what matters. As for the dutch, their organisation is not exceptional - it is common in Europe. They even lag behind the Germans in that. My question is where are the results? Ajax used to be world-conquering team? Where are they now? What threat do dutch teams pose at Champions league? Hindink is even still struggling to qualify his Russian side now. While saying that a dutch coaches the mozambicans, Olumide mentions that we did not beat any strong teams - Cameroon and cote d Ivoire. So we should not be benchmarking the mozambicans. Ah, can we allow a Nigerian coach to organise as he likes, No! I want a foreign coach (again unlike Vogt, Van Basten, Bora etc), but we should thank Amodu. Afterall, Egyptians and Algerians are still fasting and praying. By the way, are we not going to buy a drink for the mozambicans and their coach who promised to beat the Tunisians for us? They kept their promise

i am really overjoyed! Thank GOD!!! Well i read a comment someone said God help our leaders? NO WAY! God will not help them O! God bless nigeria sha ASHE!!! I hope the people in authority will rally and get serious like everyboby else(nations) and really prepare for the real mundial. No hard feelings brothers and sisters, but Amodu is not the man period. UP EAGLES!! UP NIGERIA!!!

In response to M.I: A good team with proper tactics and motivation will get you where you need to be regardless of individual players playing in the champions league [Greece is a good example] In response to all those who say give Amodu a chance because he has qualified us for two world cups! Am i the only one who realised that we struggled to qualify and had to rely on mozambique!! did ivory coast or ghana have to wait for the last game to qualify? Lets be realistic please. In the previous rounds which teams did we play? South Africa and other minnows. Imagine, we were playing long ball football/ route one!!! we have lost our unique footballing identity thanks to Amodu We need more than reconstruction and overhauling.

Well done Super Eagles on qualifying for the world cup 24hrs ago not many believed you could do it but you delivered. However so much work needs to be done to improve the team. The guys in NFF need to get their act together and the coaching staff may need to change as for the players there needs to be more passion. Amodu has succeeded in his primary assignment and should be congratulated . . . but fellow Nigerians let us be honest with each other we are NOT that good and should be grateful that we even got this far.

Posted by olumide on Nov 15 2009

@ Oluwakayode anigilaje. We will do this forever. Why white? Simple. We need a white guy for the bizness and organisation aspect of the game. See football goes beyond the 90minutes we play. Have you noticed that since we chased the white guys away, most of our players, including the decent ones have been playing in eastern europe et.c. as 'bad' as Berti vogts was he got us decent friendlies and some half caste Nigerians were becoming willing to play. also, many more Nigerians got a look in. We do not have any Nigerian coach big enuff to tell Aiyegbeni and Mikel to run around for 90mins. This is why the team appears slow.Notice how they never close players down and always put the defense under pressure. Notice how Taiye Taiwo has not had a decent game under Amodu, yet under Vogts he was our must dependable defender. No Nigerian Coach can get this out of the boys. Truth is the average Nigerian has more respect for a white man than his fellow. Let's not call a spade a gardening implement. even Yakubu had decent performances under that white man.Scolari is a loser, I stand by it. Like Raymond Domenech and probably Maradona, as a coach. He won the world cup with a fantastic Brazil team, even Christian Chukwu will get that done, he had problems in portugal even though the team was decent. If he can only perform when he has good players, how can he justify his pay. same problem with Amodu, Nigeria doesnt have the Luxury of Stars anymore, they are all average players in the team, that is why we need a class coach. see what England is today. Is it not McClaren's same team of clowns that are still playing for england? Now they have capello and the team is flourishing. The thing about them Finidi and co is that they had the opportunity to play in Europe before the rest of Africa woke up. Now Africa has caught up so we need something or someone special.Remember, I also think Amodu shld be allowed to go with the team to south africa bt he should not be the man in charge. I just mentioned about Mozambiques coach to point out that they have a style. What is our style of play these days. We are definitely not sexy like Arsenal, Neither are we Brutal Like chelsea. We just play and hope. Cheers.

What a wonderful day. Well doem to Amodu and the Super Eagles. As far as I am concerned Amodu should remain in the job and start planning for SA 2010. I cannot believe the "NIGGER INFERIORITY COMPLEX" being shown on this result. Amodu love him or hate him has now qualified the Super Eagles for 2 world cups. The match in Maputo is was crucial but the Eagles could have lost against Kenya. Bringing a foreign coach or changing coach WILL SPELL DISASTER for Nigeria. Chopping and changing managers in any work of life never producs results. I was glad Amodu shunned reporters after the game he as been fully vindicated. Now we just need the golden eaglets to retain the U-18 world cup and I will be in heaven. ONE NIGERIA ONE LOVE!!!!!!!!! I am estatic, now I can puff out my chest and hold my head high amongst other African who where sharping their pencils and mouths to pour scorn on me and Nigeria.............LOL.

I Thank GOD for this great possibility and for making our world dream to come true. But am using this great oppurtunity to plead with every soccer analyst and football pundits not to allow sentiments to becloud our sense of reasoning.the world cup is only seven months from now getting a new coach will be tantamount to making the same mistakes we made when we hired betty volts, the best thing to do now is to hire a good technical adviser that will work with coach Amodu shuibu.take it or leave it amodu is a good coach but we need techical hands in vital arears of our team the defence, midfield, attack(finishing)and fitness if we can get experts in this arears i beleive that the world cup will not only stay in africa but will come to nigeria.

this bunch of papa eagles would be a shameful disgrace at the mundial unless they are completely overhauled and shepharded by a reputable foreign coach like guus hidink or ruud gullit or frank rijkaad. Amodu Shaibu does not have gusto, charisma and recipe. im not impressed with the so called super Eagles. They were lucky against the minnows from Kenya who tore them apart but were simply unlucky. They should change theirr name to Green Eagles. period.

the winning of super eagles of Kenya, is fantastic and thrilling but if NFA goes to world cup with this team, we'll come back after the preliminaries. i think is better get a fast pace striker to augment the solo effort of Osase. much i sympathize with Kanu, truth is, he has over stayed and should make way for younger and energetic players.

Osaze, pls go all out, this is your World Cup. Your are the main frame of this glorious achievement. Thanks too to Obafemi Martins your hardwork has paid off. How time flies! We all remember how galantly you fought against Zimbabwe in 2005 when we won 3-0 but the Angolans wouldnt say die. Congrats boy. Make the Nation proud again. Goodluck you all. LONG LIVE OUR GREAT COUNTRY AND ITS GOOD PEOPLE, except the evil and corrupt leaders. SHORT LIVE THEM ALL.

One good lesson Nigerians should learn from this WC Qualification is how to totally depend on God for results while you work hard to earn what you desire. the hople of millions was restored! not because of good or bad leadership anywhere, but because we left our own power, we did not believe in our powers, forgot our own ways of doing things but went on to leave everything in the hands of God. as for Amodu being sacked.... well, he should be relived, but adequately compensated. that guy cannot carry Nigeria far at the WORLD CUP in SA. He should not be left to assist any foreign coach. it will not work. Nigerians? everything shows he cant lead these guys. well done Amodu but thanks, you cant go to SA!

Posted by BIG BOSS on Nov 15 2009

My apologies good people of a great Nation. I thought we will never make it. But for how long will this wobbling and fumbling continue? We should have booked our way in Abuja, not walking this tight rope. The next thing now is the debate on who takes the Super Eagles to the World Cup. Before we know it, our football authorities will find a third rate journeyman from somewhere in Europe (like Bora Milajinovic) to take our team to SA. And the result? very predictable.

Posted by BIG BOSS on Nov 15 2009

Meanwhile, lets just enjoy the Golden Eaglets teach the Swiss a lesson or two in soccer.

let's thank God,we had luck on our side. That's all.SOUTH AFRICA 2010...WE CANT WAIT to be there!

Posted by emmanuel c brown on Nov 15 2009

Thank GOD tat we finally made it to the World cup Go Ahead Super Eagles and make us proud.

Posted by boli atepa on Nov 15 2009

Now that the Eaglets lost in the final, is TB Joshua still a man of God? The fact is that some of us Nigerians are so dumb that we even thing Amodu could win us the World Cup. What would you guys have said if the Eagles had lost yesterday of if Tunisia had won? Would Amodu still have been good enough to retain his job? A stroke of luck is not a good replacement for competence.

Posted by Ranti on Nov 16 2009

Thanks be to God for the opportunity given to Nigeria to be in South Africa. This time around, the glass house should be re-organised, the Coaching team should be re-organised and the Players also should be re-build. finanlly, the preparation for the Nations Cup and the world cup should start now and not a minutes to the games. May God continue to help this country. amen.

Posted by chiefgbenguleh@yahoo.com on Nov 16 2009

Now Amodu will know the rejected stone(Obafemi) has now landed Nigeria into the worldcup 2010 Amodu must apologiz 2 Obafemi was not ready to play for the Country when he was the one that refused to invite him God had vidicated oba goal aka the wepon of mass destruction has destroyed the enyans

Congrats Super Eagles! Godspeed to the World Cup final!

It has become increasingly clear that as Nigerians, if we set our minds on achieving a thing, against what odds, nothing can stop us. We have such great minds and hard working people, if only we can channel our minds to developing this country, we'd be the greatest country in the world.

Super Eagles really Super......

Posted by obalola on Nov 16 2009

Congratulations Fellow Nigerians. I wish to thank Amodu & the boys for qualifying at last. However, Iam i the class of those who concluded that Amodu should not lead us to SA. He is a coach of the past and may do well with clubs like Gateway, Sunshine etc. At this level now, we need a real coach, we may do a collaboration with Arsenal for the services of ARSENE WENGER the only coach in the world reputed for discovering hidden talents. Wenger or another Coach of his class is what we need now not some clumsy looking & thinking guys. Its simply of no essence the colour of a coach so far he can deliver. We are over ripe for the WORLD CUP & Amodu himself knows this is beyound his competencies. Regards

Posted by Obi on Nov 22 2009

I am sorry but I will be blunt. tHe super eagles have no chance at the world cup if something is not done quickly. I saw the match against Kenya and they were completely overplayed. Yakubu scored while offside and Kenyans were denied a penalty when striker Oliech was clearly brought down inside teh box. The eagles will be mince meat gainst stronger opposition like Ivory Coast, Ghana etc
