Bayelsa United’s
2008/09 Globacom Premier League title victory celebration was cut short
on Sunday when their captain, Abel Tabor, was shot dead by armed
robbers that same night.
The Yenagoa side’s
media officer, Ebi Abi, confirmed in a telephone interview with the
News Agency of Nigeria on Monday that Tabor was on his way to Warri
from Oghara, the club’s training base when the incident occurred.
Abi said the skipper was with some friends in his car when they ran into a gang of armed robbers between Warri and Oghara.
The robbers shot the player while attempting to reverse, according to the club’s spokesman.
He said the occupants begged the robbers to take the victim to hospital but they refused.
Bayelsa United were
forced to a 2-2 draw by Warri Wolves in the last game of the league
season on Sunday in Oleh, Isoko Local Government Area of the state to
clinch their first ever league title.
His remains have been deposited in a mortuary in Warri.
Alex Amodo, an official of Warri Wolves, described the Warri/Oghara road as dangerous.
Amodo said that he would not drive on the road beyond 7pm as armed robbers operate freely, even during the day.
“I tell you my wife was robbed on that road,” said the former player.
An ardent supporter
of the club, Stanley Disi, said the captain’s death had stopped them
from savouring the title they won in a photo finish.
Tabo hailed from Odi in Kolokuma/Pokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa.
