Five in the frame for Eagles job

Print print Email email Share Share

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has shortlisted five foreign coaches in the race to get a new manager for the Super Eagles ahead of their preparation for the World Cup in South Africa.

After a lengthy meeting on Friday in Abuja, the NFF recommended Bruno Metsu of France, Peter Taylor of the UK, Ratomir Djugovic of Serbia and Louis Van Gaal and Guus Hiddink, both of the Netherlands for the position of technical adviser of the first team squad.

The federation said that it had not yet officially approached any of the managers but that a one month screening process would now commence with a view to appointing one of the shortlisted coaches as technical adviser.

It was also announced that the beleaguered head coach of the Super Eagles, Shuaibu Amodu, would not be sacked but would move aside to take charge of the affairs of the home based players. The move is largely seen as a stay of execution after the football federation announced their disappointment at the Eagles performance in the just concluded African Nations cup.

The announcement was made late on Friday night by NFF technical committee chairman, Taiwo Ogunjobi who added that the meeting was adjourned until Tuesday next week.

It is believed that Ratomir Dujkovic, who coached Ghana for two years, is the favourite to land the job. He is currently the manager of the Under-21 Serbian team and has coached in various parts of Africa.

My deepest congratulations to Ahmodu. Why always the coach and not the players/footballers? Ahmodu needs some breathing space. We all know that the Coach of Nigeria's supper eagles is the most difficult job in the world.Best wishes to Ahmodu and the Bull

Posted by Kobe on Feb 05 2010

OK !! So off the SA we go with Amodu in charge. I hope he proves me wrong, 'cos as far as I am concerned he alcks too many qualities to lead us .. but hang on pls explain "expected to raise a home-based team" why ??? and "the decision to source for an additional foreign coach is being considered" ohh so he wont be in - charge after all.. Nigeria we hail thee !!

Posted by thecross on Feb 06 2010

Good decision by the NFF. Very good decision. NFF must be commended. Amodu must now get to work. There are many, many talents are there. That does not also mean the entire eagles team should be disbanded. An additional foreign coach is not necessary and the idea should be shelved. There are Nigerians who can do the job and even better.Pls NFF why carrry this burden of hiring a foreign coach? Nigeria is better off without one. Pls.

Posted by Michael Ijere on Feb 06 2010

ITS NOT ABOUT SENTIMENT ,CLEARLY ANY GOAT CAN SEE THAT AMODU LACKS THE TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AND THE INSPIRATIONAL/LEADERSHIP PERSONALITY REQUIRED TO IMPROVE OUR GAME.....JUST LIKE WE ARE SEEING IN THE FEC/YARADUA SCENARIO : INCOMPETENCE AND BAD JUDGEMENT ARE ALSO ALIVE AND WELL IN THE NFF

Posted by chibyke on Feb 06 2010

Nigerians and nepotism, it's everywhere, from an incapacitated president to an incapacitated coach, same story

Posted by Fizzle on Feb 06 2010

Well thats fine by me if if would made to work with a foreign tech adviser

Posted by ibe smith on Feb 06 2010

so after what happened we still not have learn our lesson. when will we remove politics from sports? oh Nigeria! we still have a long way to go. is amudu going back to home players he rejected? shame to all of u who retained Amudu

Posted by Akin Owoyele on Feb 06 2010

It should be three oh..pls next remove Van Gaal and Hiddink.Nigeria is tooo small for these two, besides can we pay their salary. What pedigree do the remaining three have? What have they done in their coaching career for them to deserve the job?C'mon NFA i expect better names..and pls lets forget Van Gaal and Hiddink..NFA common..we know they wont answer

Posted by Stephen Theodore on Feb 06 2010

Why would you even be thinking of other coaches in the list when van gaal and guus hiddink are in the list except u guyz are trying to say those other coaches will be difficult to secure their signatures.

Posted by Nic on Feb 06 2010

I think a foreign coach is needed!seriously.

Posted by Michael Ijere on Feb 06 2010

WHATS THE TRUE POSITION, NEXT, AM QUITE CONFUSED

Posted by Alex 'Alibobo' Agbo on Feb 06 2010

Gaal and Hiddink? they won't respect themselves. maybe they should have added Morinho or Sir Ferguson to the list and then ask my dad to foot the bills. Amodu should take the blame 100% cuz those players are there because he selected them.

Good riddance to bad rubbish. In any tournament, Nigerians will have their hearts in their mouths each time any Nigerian team plays. How can a nation that is stupendously endowed with talents prefer to be fumbling and wobbling all the time? Aren't we shameful at all, especially that we have become a minion in everything that we used to be leaders. Without attempting to run Amodu down bcos he is a local coach, he is not one of our last eleven. He lacks everything a good coach should have. Let him completely; hope he will still not resurrect to coach the tired legs we call super eagles again.

Posted by Baba debora on Feb 06 2010

We dont need a foreign coach. Let give Siasia or keshi a chance.

Posted by Tunde on Feb 06 2010

It's really sad that we keep going for a foreign technical adviser!. What's wrong in being a black man? when will we stop castigating ourselves?. May God deliver the glass house from the colonial mentality!. What's wrong in sending Amodu and team on a coaching attachements/training with top coaches in Euro clubs?it shows we are never interested in building capacities. What a shame! a real shame!.

Posted by Ikechukwu on Feb 06 2010

At least some good news coming out of Nigeria. NFF is taking the right step. We are finally waking up to the truth. Those who think Amodu should continue as the coach of the world cup bound Super Eagles team simply miss one point; you do not give a coaching job based on sympathy. Amodu qualified us for the world cup; yes agreed. Amodu rescued us in 2002; no argument. What is his style of play? It is a style characterised by lack lustre performance and boring play. Watch the local league you criticised and raise players from there. Smoothen those rough edges that, according to you, there was no time for. I suggest NNF should go for Hiddink if he is interested in coming because of his record; however, the following must be done: he must be given a free hand to do his job; he should be asked to stay in Nigeria. Second on my list is Louis Van Gaal, the other Dutch man. I say this because of the fact that our successes have come from them. I do not think we should go for Peter Taylor.

Posted by Boli Atepa on Feb 06 2010

Hugely disappointing decision. Since Amodu got his coaching instructions from spiritualists, the job should have gone to TB Joshua or Guru Maharadji.

Posted by iceQueen on Feb 06 2010

LOL!!! Peter Taylor---last coached Wycombe Wanderers F.C in league 2(fourth tier of the English league system) Van Gaal---Bayern Munich Guus Hiddink---not interested!! Ratomir Djugovic---Serbia U-21 team Bruno Metsu---coach of Qatar!!! LOL!!!!!

Posted by Mr. Goody Goody on Feb 06 2010

Good Decision. But we need a foreign President too!!!

Posted by Sadiq on Feb 06 2010

Foreign or local coach it make no difference the key word is stop politicizing sport. Allow competent players to play no matter where they come from. I don't see anything like pedigree or tribalism in sports.

Posted by Akinnawo Babatope Victor on Feb 06 2010

The players must be overhauled. Those guys should be replaced by new guys that are full of life and energy and not lazy Ayegbeni& co.

Posted by Arome on Feb 06 2010

Guus hidink and van gaal are the best men for the job . Atleast with the wealth of experience Hidink has he is capable of transforming the super eagles, but the timeframe between now and the world cup is too short ,the coach that will lead the Eagles to the nation and world cup is supposed to be decided before the nations cup. I see the NFF as the cause of our poor outing inANGOLA....

Posted by Reality Check on Feb 06 2010

This should have happened immediately after that last World Cup qualifier in Kenya. Good decision but the timing is late and could jeopardise its effectiveness. It took Osaze's outburst to get the NFF to face the reality of Amodu's technical inadequacies. So this becomes more of a gamble than a well-planned move. Besides, why not get Keshi to work with the home-based players?

Posted by Big D on Feb 06 2010

I completely agree with Michael but do those nitwits at NFF need a whole month to screen these coaches? it just shows that they also like Ahmodu don't know what they are doing.

Posted by emma majebi on Feb 06 2010

The road to destruction for the Eagles has begun. We would have the worst outing ever in a world cup. How many of the other nation who qualified 4 the world cup are still pondering who will take thier team 2 d world cup? U pencilled down 5 possibles yet u have not yet contacted any of them? Wonderful! So before u egage thy guy agree on terms etc just exactly how many days will he have to prep the team For the tournament?

Posted by Jacobs on Feb 06 2010

Why would Amodu not be given the honor of embarrassing us at the world cup after all he qualified us for it? Now a rejected foregn coach will be the one to ruin our South Africa dreams. our players are not good enough.....we should just face up to the fact that Nigeria is only going to South Africa to make up the numbers, and yes I remember France 98.

Posted by Dayo on Feb 06 2010

LMAO! Nigeria and its delusional leadership (or is it gullible followership?). Van Gaal is not going to leave his less than year-old post at Bayern for the jaga-jaga Eagles' job, neither would Hiddink leave the cozy comfort of Abromavich's billions. Realistically, we are left with the UNEMPLOYED Peter Taylor, who was coaching Stevenage in the fifth-tier of English football (Conference National) less than 2 years ago, or Bruno Metsu who has not achieved anything significant since his Senegal tenure EIGHT YEARS AGO!

Posted by Johnkay on Feb 06 2010

Inspite of what Amodu has done we now want to push him aside. Technical adviser is not our problem but commitment. Not even Sir Alex Ferguson can manage these Boys. NFF stop politics and corruption and lets take d Eagles to an enviable height. Remember Nigerians, we only prayed to participate in d World Cup and thanks be to God he answered us. Lets stop wasting our resources on foreign coaches and d so called foreign based players who are not committed to national assignment.

Posted by ayo adeyemo on Feb 06 2010

NFF series is the best commedy on earth. One wonders wot the so called favourite R. Djukovik achieved in Ghana, yet is being shortlisted as the favourite to take the job. As for, Luis Van Gaal and Guus Hiddink, NFF are just playing games. They ve at least put them on the list even when they know they may never be able to pay these accomplished Europeans. One month screening process!, that is unbelievable, when will the coach now start the job when we all know that the world-cup is here. Like Femi-Kuti;'i sori sori o'

Posted by area father on Feb 06 2010

good riddance to bad rubbish but i want a coach who will have the balls to do away with players like yakubu and will be able to use some of our home based players.

Posted by cochito on Feb 06 2010

Well, this is a step in the right direction, but as usual the NFF does not appear to have consulted the most important party in the proceedings: the players. Why not call them together and ask them for their input about which coach they would most like to take charge of them. After all they are the ones who will do the playing, not the NFF.

Posted by MIkey on Feb 06 2010

it is already on the BBC that Amodu has been sacked.

Posted by A . ADEKOLA on Feb 06 2010

Rather than Amodu, I think it is our football administrators that should be excused from our football arrangement. One thing Iam sure of is that our world cup outing will end in disaster because the root of the problem had not been addressed. The administrator followed sentiments by the fans who didn't have sufficient facts to punish an innocent man. They set targets for him and he met all the targets. Qualify for Nations up , qualify for world cup he did, Get to semifinal of Nations cup he did.He even improved our ranking in the world of football. What then was or were Amodu's faults. Yeye administrators just spending tax payers money gallivanting to all match venues. No Minister to call them to other because no president to query the minister. Yeye country.

Posted by AsItIs on Feb 06 2010

Is Amodu the worst Nigerian in position of authority? If there were a world cup for electricity supply, fuel supply, health care system, free and fair election, road infrastrucure, air safety, law enforcement, crime detection (even virtually anything that affect us)etc, we ould not qualify. Please help me. Shout and abuse our ministers of power, works, INEC chairman, NNPC GMD, IG etc the way you have been harrasing Amodu. Changes in these areas are more important to me than a world cup that we CAN NEVER NEVER win!

Posted by Bolaji on Feb 06 2010

Amodu picked the squad ans picked the players for every single match. He picked completely unfit players who saw the nations cup as their rehabilitation ground. Amodu obviously lacks the technical know how to coach Nigeria, he is unable to read opposition strategies and he seems completely helpless when it comes to motivating a team , thereby resulting in a below the par and significantly lack lustre performance . Teams like Ghana,Mozambique and the likes still gave a hearty performance initiated by a great coach. Let's face fact Amodu is not the right man to take Nigeria to the world cup. As much as Amodu is not the right man for the job, We do not need a mediocre foreign coach, he should be replaced with a reputable and experienced coach

Posted by Ibrahim Moshudi on Feb 06 2010

I sincerely believe that if NFF give quality & raw talent, experience & adequate resourece a chance Nigeria will win 2010 w cup. Hence no politic with world cup.

Posted by gerard onochie on Feb 06 2010

Biggest joke I have read all week. I see history repeating itself. Please Jay Jay Okotcha, Odegbami, Fashanu ...etc please get into the NFF and rescue Nigerian football. Four months to go to the WC you push aside a Nigerian coach because his style is not exciting despite getting to the semi-final. Incidentally that was his target NFF set him. Then they hope in four months a foreign coach and Amodu working with local players can form a team.....WHAT UTTER STUPIDITY. No other WC bound nation to the best of my knowledge ( I stand to be corrected ) has changed their coach. Once again a European will come take a huge amount of money that can be better spent on developing talent and dump Nigeria like a cheap prostitute. GRIM TIMES AHEAD!!!! NIGERIANS THE MOST STUPID PEOPLE ON EARTH!!!!

Posted by TIMLOH CHRISTOPHER DAUDA on Feb 06 2010

Nff will draft another list going of coaches as far as i am concern.lets wait and see what will happen in the coming week as Nff is is presently confused and lacks direction.

Posted by AsItIs on Feb 06 2010

BTW I want us all to save all these comments and review this matter, by the grace of GOD, after the world cup. Focussing on short term, quick fix is a grave error!

Its a shame that despite the huge talents abound in this country, we have continued to struggle in virtually everything including sports. The hiring of a foreign technical adviser though could bring some good results, it might not just be enough in taking us to where we really should be in football. There equally should be radical changes in the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, where sensitive decisions are taken so that the game can move forward in this country.

HONESTLY, I DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH NIGERIANS FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS/LOVERS. YES, THE AMODU THAT IS NOT GOOD HAS VIRTALLY QUALLIFIED OUR DEAR NATION FOR ABOUT 3 WORLD CUP. THEY SEEMS TO HAVE FORGOTTEN THAT IT TOOK THE INGENUITY OF AMOKE IN 1994 FOR THE SUPER EAGLES LED BY A WHITE MAN TO DEFEAT SECOND TEAM OF ZAMBIA. IN 1998 WHEN ANOTHER WHITE MAN TOOK US TO WORLD CUP WE FARED BADLY. THE MAN NEVER CAME TO THI COUNTRY SINCE THEN. PLEASE, LET SOMEONE SEARCH THE HISTORY. THE LAST TIME WE HAD ENCOURAGED PERFORMANCE AT THE WORLD CUP WAS WHEN THE MAN THAT QUALIFIED THE NATION FOR THE MUNDIAL LED THE TEAM. DON'T LET ME REMEMBR THE ONIGBINDE ERA PLEASE. REMEMBER, A FORMER PLAYER SAID SOME TIME LAST YEAR THAT NIGERIAN PLAYERS ARE BELOW AVERAGE. FOREIGN COACH IS NOT THE ANSWER TO A GLORIUS OUTING IN THE WORLD CUP. SOMEONE LIKE SIASIA AND LIKES CAN TAKE US TO QUATER FINALS.

Posted by Superus on Feb 06 2010

Poetic justice looming Bad decision near and long term. Pretty sad for the coach to miss out on the World Cup twice. This is pretty wicked treatment which may well work against Nigeria again a la 2002. Egyptian local content triumphed for the 3rd straight time. Learn people!

Posted by Onche on Feb 06 2010

Some how i feel this is not a right decision, although I am one of those that were really critical of Amodu's style and tactical approach in prosecuting the qualifiers and the nations cup. I think he should be allowed to go with the team as coach under a technical adviser for the world cup. That weay he sure would learn more

Posted by Superus on Feb 06 2010

Discontinuity has its price. Of course it's not the right decision. Looked at from a purely contractual position and a performance standpoint. There will be no overnight improvement of the footbal team as many expect, because the improvement are systematic. Strange as it may sound to some, Nigeria have actually have improved since Vogts, and at a lower budget. What this new move does only further pushes back the teams long term development. How sad

While other countries are preparing 4 d world cup. NFF are stil on coach contemplation. When wil d coach start asessin d players? Whatever d case. let it be on time, whether foreign or local coach, cos time is going.

Posted by Basil on Feb 06 2010

Justice is served. Let Amodu prepare and raise the profile of local footballers whom he said are not good enough for the Eagles. Since he knows exactly what is required to make them world class, let him go to work immediately.

Posted by Peter on Feb 06 2010

Honestly, anybody who still looks to the Super Eagles to derive any sort of comfort in these troubled times, is a joke beyond compare. Today, I can say we are the dumbest dumb nation in the world, bar none. This is what fear can drive a group of seemingly sensible people to do. I honestly dont know what Amodu is still doing there. If he has any sense, he will retire from the whole stinking culture that we unfortunately call Nigerian football. Nigeria is not the only place where football is played. If Nigerian people cannot appreciate what they've got, let them die with a foreign coach since that is their heart's desire.

Posted by CountryMan on Feb 06 2010

inferiority complex is a disease, corruption is a disease...three and out...watch out for an announcement from the boys in march...

Posted by Andrew Ogunbayo on Feb 06 2010

The sacking of Shuaibu Amodu again after qualifying us for the World Cup and winning the bronze in Angola smacks of colonial mentalism!!! When are we going to be proud of our own achievers? Yes, he made mistakes, even grave selection mistakes but they were in good faith and his reasoning has to be respected. Employing a white coach always ends in the same way - camoflagued under-achievement. The only viable option is the appointment of Sia-Sia. No more mercenaries, lets celebrate our own talent.

Never say never. Someone like Hiddink might take up the challange because that is what makes him tick. He would perish without a challange. Promise him enough time and freedom to his thing and he'll might go for it, even for a modest salary. He would be the ideal coach for a team of players eager to perform and with nothing to lose. Anyway, good luck.

Nigeria as an entity should be sacked. see us see fuel wahala since last year and yet nobody has been given d boots. education and power nko? NFF sef should quit. I wont be surprised if Peter Taylor gets d job; our dealers (not leaders) are known for mediocrity. where's frank Rikjard on that list, i dont know if he's employed now. And again, we need purposeful and visionary leadership in all aspects of this nation, not wuru-wuru-to-the-answer or fire-brigade or listless dealership. TO HIRE A COACH 3 MONTHS TO A MAJOR TOURNAMENT IS CRAZY. WHAT SCREENING IS OGUNJOBI AND HIS GANG EMBARKING ON. I STRONGLY FEEL THAT THE NFF TECHNICAL COMMITTEEE LACKS THE TECHNICAL COMPETENCE TO INTERVIEW OR SCREEN ANY WORLD CLASS COACH. WHAT THE BUNCH IS LOOKING FOR IS A COACH THEY CAN INTIMIDATE. COACHES THESE DAYS ARE HIRED WITHIN DAYS. NFF NEEDS TO IDENTIFY THE STRONG POINTS IT WANTS IN A NATIONAL TEAM COACH AND GO FOR THE CANDIDATE WITHOUT TAKING US THROUGH THIS MERRY GO ROUND OF SCREENING AND INTERVIEW.NFF HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE PROBLEM OF NIGERIAN FOOTBALL. THEY BUNGLE THE SMALLEST OF ASSIGNMENTS AND TURN ROUND TO LOOK FOR SCAPE GOATS. PRAY WHAT WERE THE STRONG POINTS IT SAW IN AMODU BEFORE HIRING HIM?
