Eagles coach prays our boys avoid Brazil and Spain

Print print Email email Share Share

As the Super Eagles of Nigeria await their opponents at the World Cup draws that would be conducted on Friday in Cape Town, South Africa, assistant coach of the national team, Fatai Amoo, says one prayer uppermost in his mind is that the Eagles should not be grouped alongside Spain and Brazil.

Speaking in a telephone interview, Amoo said, "Whether we like it or not, these big teams would fall into certain groups but for me I wish we can still avoid them at least in the early stages."

Spain are the current European champions and sit on top of the monthly rankings.

Rough road

Though Nigeria barely made it through to the World Cup, Amoo says the technical team has put the past behind and is looking forward to a memorable outing in South Africa, hoping the Eagles could go far and perhaps win the trophy.

"It's a tall order no doubt but it is not unachievable if we put our minds to it and work hard. The so-called difficult team can also be defeated, teams get better as a they settle down into tournaments, so if we can have a good start we can look on to build on that," he said.

Team list

According to the tactician, a list of players to begin camping for the Nations Cup in Angola has already been drafted and will soon be made public. He hinted that some home-based players will be in the team which would begin camping later this month in Namibia.

"We are on course and preparations have started in earnest for the Nations Cup as we are set to make our list public. We hope the players would be injury free and things go on as we planed," he said.

Assessing the Eagles' weekend performance in their respective clubs, Amoo said, "it's been up and down for them, some are having a good time while it's not the same for others but that is football. When you have your opportunity you make the best of it."

Eagles' focus

Also Former Super Eagles midfielder Emeka Ezeugo, also speaking in a telephone interview, says focus should be on making it past the first round.

Ezeugo, who toured four continents in a 15-year playing career, maintained that Nigeria's focus should be on making it past the first round regardless of the teams the Super Eagles get drawn with.

His words: "We cannot avoid the big names in football today since we are not one of the seeded teams so let's work towards it. It is time we introduced something classy and world class or (we will) end up just making up the numbers."

The 42-year-old noted that with Nigeria's penchant for getting drawn with strong teams in most international competition, it would be surprising if the Super Eagles does not get drawn in a group of death.

"In 1994 we played Argentina in the group stages; Paraguay and Spain in 1998; Sweden, England and Argentina in 2002 so why should this draw be different?" He asked. "The important thing isn't who we get drawn with but what we have put in place to make it out of the group, like we did in ‘94 and ‘98 or get booted out as it happened in 2006."

‘Old wine in new bottle does not taste new'

He further emphasised that for the Super Eagles to give a masterpiece performance at the mundial against any opponent an influential and experienced person must be in charge of the team.

Suggesting names, the former defender said: "When I say experienced I mean someone with global understanding of the game, who has been there and done that. Someone like Jurgen Klinsman who led Germany to the 2006 world cup, Franz Beckenbauer and Barcelona's Pep Guardiola. These people brought a change in the team they led, if something new is expected from the Super Eagles we need a change, if not what we have seen so far is what we will continue to see."

Ezeugo also noted that Nigeria football is stuck in a "perpetual time warp".

"We are stuck in a time warp, placing old wine in new bottles and expecting it to taste new," he said. "Football has moved way beyond the comprehension of our managers. We still do things the way it was done in the 70's forgetting you cannot teach what you don't know."

All in place for 2010 draws

Meanwhile, with nearly a year of preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup final draw, the competition's LOC manager for South Africa's Cape Town Venue, Teral Cullen, who has been the operational head of the operation, is confident the draw will run without a hitch.

She is quoted on FIFA.com as saying: "Over the last 10 days everyone involved has put in an enormous effort. They've really put their noses to the ground and worked flat out, with many late nights and early mornings. The Draw Hall and stage is complete and rehearsals have already started."

why on earth do we celebrate qualifying if we are scared of meeting some teams.am still of the opinion that those boys will disgrace themselves at the World Cup,the question is even if we have the determination to succeed,do we have the talent. How many of the so Super Eagles are playing in Champions League teams? For me,am not expecting anything from the draws.Easy group, the boys will be complacent, tough group,we cannot make it.Am sorry if i offended anyone by saying the truth.

Let us not worry ourselves with being drawn along top seeded teams. The key to do well at football big stage should be "early and maximum preparation. We must start camping for the mundial now.

Fatai Amoo, you pray that the Eagles, should not be grouped with Spain and Brazil. Are you a comic or something? You're in the wrong profession.I really don't know what's the problem.Nigerians back home, need to stop all the Dumb and Frivolous prayers.

Yes,because God has nothing better to do than making sure Nigeria avoid Spain and Brazil. Have we started planing yet or are we going spend the whole winter, spring and summer looking for a coach and hire him 2 weeks before the tournament. Stop being stupid and start being organized. Idiots, these idiots still don't have a clue.

This is a silly prayer! If we eventually make it out of a weak group, would we still go back to God to pray that Brazil and Spain drop out so that we can sail to the final? Alawada people!

It's just so dissappointing to witness the direction the sport we love so much is heading and the way it is deteriorating so fast under our nose as a result of poor talent development. I remenber in the past when young talents were scouted all over the contry and once found, were invited to long term camp, while they are precepted by the experienced players with already established clubs. This is what we need to go back to. As for this coming world cup, to say this team will disgrace themselves and the contry will be an understatement. How low can a self esteem go? you know it's too low when a leader of the team is praying for this team to be grouped to a weak team, Alas!!, that is too low. I thought the essence of competition is to compete against the best, triumph, and position yourself as the best. I am ashamed of that this idiosyncracy ideology. Anyway, this team will go to south Africa for sure, but they will not make it past the first round. This is a team that does not know how to win, motivationally weak, skillfully poor, and focously bewildered. Pardon me, but can they just take molue to south Africa, rather than wasting any more money for flight? just a suggestion. Afterall, isn't economy still bad to waste money on soon to be 0-5 team?

Pls let's give Mr Fatai Amoo a break. Even big football nations like Brazil, England and Italy always pray to avoid big names in their groups. It is because they realise that getting into the flow in major tournaments does not often come easily, which is why you need the New Zealands and Japans to warm up in your opening matches. In 1998, Spain never recovered from losing to Nigeria in its opening match.

Fatai, GOD,ii not answer that pray of yours, if you,re confident of ur capabilities, you should be ready to face your chalenges.

Brazil are not the defending champions. That honour goes to Italy.

Amodu's list is still lacking, let him input more midfeilders and small strikers because we need more midfield to overcome the likes of Brasil and Spain that we are scared of.

Fatai, i expected you to come out with a programme that will transform our team and not praying to avoid some teams at the world cup. With these type of people as coaches of our national team Nigerians should not expect much from the team when the competition gets under way next year.

Posted by Ibrahim on Dec 01 2009

Nonsense. It is their incompetence and not Brazil or Spain that they are afraid of. What magic can one expect from a coach who is not even confident of his team?

Posted by ochada joshua on Dec 01 2009

With determination like the under 20 players, The super eagle can make it. however, ethnicty, indiscipline and corruption should not pave way. because when God sees this He will turn his back against us as he is the "God of the soccer"

Una don see abi? Even the coaching crew don dey piss for pant be4 Nations Cup sef. And some people go dey talk about letting Amodu and co be. Well God dey.

G.I.!!Brazil,England and Italy, pray to aviod big named teams?REALLY?????How would you know?It makes it okay for Armoo's prayer because, countries like England,Brazil and Italy does the same. You're just as lame as Fatai Armoo. If you have to pray,so you can get your job done, then your're in the wrong profession.

Posted by G.L. on Dec 01 2009

@Elliot-New England (USA), here in England, the prayer approaching every tournament is for an easy group. How many times have Nigeria started well only to falter in the 2nd round? It happened in 1994 and 1998. Compare that to Italy who always start with a string of draws only to cart the trophy home. Tournaments are only won by teams who hit form in the middle of a competition. Left to me, a group of Nigeria, France, New Zealand and Japan will do me nicely, thank you. By the time time the Brazils and Argentinas come around, our players would already have been riding high on confidence from early victories!

What kind of encouragement and confidence will a coach show towards his team by making a public statement like hope we dont play brazil and spain. I wanted us to stick with Amodu and Fatai but if they dont believe they will achieve success, then lets get a coach who can. Now I know we need new coaches. SiaSia and an assistant like obuh, eguavon, or any even beg westerhoff for assistance to siasia.

@G.L.You don't get my point.Praying to God over soccer, like you have folks doing back home is frivilous.Better preparation/players,will help Nigeria through. My point is God,has nothing to do with sports.Think about it,if you're a student in the UK,do you pray to God to pass an exam, without studying????Have a wonderful day!!!!!

Posted by TOLA on Dec 02 2009

Need we say more...this is proof that idiots rule in Nigeria

Posted by Elliot-New England(USA) on Dec 02 2009

@Tola!Yeah,tell me about it.That's what happens, when you have buffoons in control of the country.

Posted by Riot5000 on Dec 02 2009

FOREIGN IS BETTER. That's the Nigerian way.

Posted by mekina on Dec 02 2009

Super Eagles, need a change and should foccus to make all nigerians proud. They need to bring out the name of nigeria so that every world will no about nigerian from FOOTBALL.Every year, every season super eagles are drawing back of the way they play why? The boys who is playing should first foccus on playing football and not playing money because this is their problem and the coach should stop looking at players money before choosing who should play. Let he who is willing to play for nigeria to play,he who want to make name throughout the world in football should allow to play and not the person who is coming to make money for some little years.

Posted by AMINU ISMAIL on Dec 02 2009

THE EXPERIENCED BOYS CAN STILL DO BETTER THAN MANY OF THE NEW PLAYERS DONT FORGET ABOUT THE EFFECT IT SHOES WHEN OKOCHA HANG HIS BOOT, TAKE NOTE AND DONT MAKE THE WRONG SELECTION,PPL DONT LOOK AT YOUR PERFORMANCE BUT THE MISTAKE . WISH YOU ALL THE BEST.

Posted by Chookz Nnene on Dec 03 2009

Sorry this dude must be on crack. We are not going to win the world cup but I'll sure like to see us face some good teams in the group stages. That's what the spectacle is all about. If we can't raise our game then we don't deserve to be there
