NATIONS CUP: Eagles may be grouped with Cameroun, Cote d' Ivoire

Print print Email email Share Share

The Super Eagles will not be heading into Friday's African Cup of Nations draw ceremony in Luanda, Angola as one of the favourites for the tournament, that is, if one takes into consideration the fact that the Eagles are not one of the top seeded teams this time around.

One would need to go back to Mali 2002 to find out the last time the Super Eagles went into an African Cup of Nations tournament as rank outsiders for the trophy because that is the scenario before the Eagles heading into Friday's ceremony as they have been placed in Pot 2 along with Tunisia, Ghana and Mali.

At Ghana 2008, the Super Eagles were placed in Pot 1 along with the hosts, Egypt and Tunisia. It was also the same situation at Egypt 2006 and Tunisia 2004.

Unfamiliar position

However, Pot 1 is currently occupied by the tournament's top seeded teams, defending champions Egypt, four-time winners Cameroon, 1992 champions Cote d'Ivoire and Angola, with each of them heading one of the four groups situated in the cities of Luanda (Angola), Cabinda (Cameroon), Benguela (Egypt) and Huila (Cote d'Ivoire).

And the reason for this is not farfetched, as besides the hosts, all the other top seeds have performed better than the Super Eagles in the past three editions of the Nations Cup, which was one of the criteria used by the continent's football governing body, CAF. So Nigeria will definitely be grouped along with one of the top seeds by the end of Friday's ceremony as was the case at Mali 2002, where they found themselves in the same group as the host.

Déjà vu

That tournament in Mali was held in a World Cup year, so if history repeats itself and the Super Eagles find themselves in Group A with Angola, then they will be presented with a great opportunity to get one over a team that denied them a ticket to the 2006 World Cup. But should they find themselves in Group B along with Cameroon, Group C with Egypt, or in Group D with Cote d'Ivoire, then they will have a battle royale up their sleeves against three of the teams expected to vie for a place on the podium - along with Ghana - in Angola.

Even though they will not be meeting Tunisia, Ghana or Mali in the first round, the Super Eagles could find themselves pitched against another tough customer in Algeria, which is one of the teams in Pot 3, alongside the trio of Zambia, Benin or Togo. There is also the prospect of a rematch with Mozambique which will be drawn out of Pot 4, where they find themselves with the trio of Burkina Faso, Gabon and Malawi. Time has however proven that been seeded doesn't guarantee success, so nothing stops the Super Eagles or, in fact, any of the other teams in Friday's ceremony (maybe not all of them, to be realistic) from securing a podium finish at the end of the tourney in Angola.

This fixture is good for our world cup preparations. At the end the tired legs among the cult members of the current squad will be exposed.

Nigeria should not be afraid of any team at this level of our football development, we only need to put our "hearts and brain " to work for success.

Posted by Kunle Abioye on Nov 19 2009

I believe the tougher the group the better chance we have. It will urge us to prepare very well and show more commitment. I wish we in the same group with Cotedivore, Algeria and Moxambique.

I believe putting nigeria in a tough group will ensure strong preparations for the tornament. It can make nigeria improve. UP NIGERIA!!!

Russia lost out of the race for SA 2010. lets go for Guss Hiddink. After all, he is dutch! He is experienced. And we have success stories with Dutch Coaches. We can begin the talk with him now. he can take us to Angola 2010 first.

Bring them on

Nigeria side is as good as any side out there we just have to put our mind in the game and stop unnecessary presure on player and coach.

Posted by Joe on Nov 19 2009

I think being in a tough group will be better for the Super Eagles because it will make them to be more determined and serious with the game as well as preparing them for the World Cup in South Africa.

When will we learn and trust our own men to do things for us? why the call for another coach now? pls give this men(coaches) all they need and see if things will not be done the right way. Pls let the Super Eagles start training now, and train under heavy sound that comes from that thing (cant rem the name now). they can meet any team in the world. A word is enough for the wise.

HABA GIANT OF AFRICA WHY ARE U AFRAID OF COUNTRIES THAT I CONSIDER AS UNDER DOGS? CAMEROON, COTE DI VORE UNDER MY FOOT.

Posted by olumide on Nov 19 2009

Will all the afrocentric, quasi patriots in the house just take a step back for a minute. The point is not whether Guus Hiddink has ever won the world cup or whether a foreigner has ever won the world cup for another country. The point is let's look at ourselves and make the right prescriptions. Rt now, Nigeria has only one recommendable coach, in stephen keshi. Forget siasia, he's still got a lot to learn. Now keshi is arguably Nigeria's 'biggest' coach yet he couldnt handle Seyi. You can imagine having him handle the combined egoes of yakubu,Mikel and Yobo. The team will divide and then it's end of story. Why do u guys think Onigbinde sacked them oliseh from his team. He could not handle them. Siasia had a bust up with Osaze of all people during the olympics and that one staed outrightly that siasia was not ripe for the National team. And have you seen how siasia is only comfortable with working with players who are not established? Big point is no Nigerian can handle the players. You can call it what u like, bt the average Nigerian would give more respect to an oyinbo technician than a Nigerian scientist. You people seem not to want to consider this. So a Nigerian coach will eventually lose his dressing room, which is like 75% of the job in dealing with National teams. Dnt even get me started on tactics. And I'm disappointed someone is asking why russia is not in the world cup if hiddink were that good. Please u dnt need to win an arguement. Did u have the same opinion at the end of the euros. Did russia win that competition? No. Did they play well. Yes. That is the point. Playing convincingly. And TATA, yes coach dey play football. Ask England, ask McClaren, and ask Capello.

Those who have written off the Super Eagles, based on their poor showing during the World Cup qualifiers, may be in for a surprise when the Angola 2009 Nations Cup kicks off. Eagles will excell beyond many people's expectations. Good luck "wobbling" Super Eagles and God bless Nigeria!

Posted by TATA on Nov 20 2009

abeg olumide...so the only person who can handle these big egos happen to be white...then lets admit that we have inferiority complex and start from there...are you happy with yaradua's performance, lets bring in a white man and so on...amodu is the best coach for these boys...he knows them as the back of his hands...yes, they earn more than him...but he has managed to make them qualify...let us swim and sink with amodu...if he fails, we accept it and work harder...we are amongst the best 32 football playing nations on earth...please look at the england team carefully...the bulk of that team have appeared in the last two european club cup finals...you do not have that sort of administration and technical depth behind your boys...amodu even qualified without making use of friendly matches...he was so harassed he called them off...let us continue to lose until the average nigerian learns to respect a nigerian scientist more than an oyibo technician...that is how we would develop...has holland ever won the world cup? make do with what you have and improve on it...or sack him, you have done it before, and lets see how far you will go...kids...you have to have faith and confidence in your abilities...it is not rocket science...it is ordinary football....

l believe the best thing to do now is to look for a foreign coach whom we should allow to make his sellection himself even if he sees them in our home based players, and if i am to make the decission i will pick hiddink, bcause he knows how to awakening a dying team like our super eagles.and every decission should be made on time,as you can see teams like ivory coast/ghana/camerron are far better prepared than our s/eagles,may God help us this time.

Posted by petrus on Nov 20 2009

we need a foreign coach.period.

Posted by Patriot on Nov 20 2009

@Tata,your arguments are fundamentally flawed. The issue is not whether we believe in a Nigerian or a foreigner.England took a good & honest look at themselves and came to a conclusion that none of their coaches had the technical knowledge to move their footballl to world reckoning and they got competent foreign hands to help them out.It had nothing to do with the competence of their administrators at the English FA or their technical dept.It was a honest self examination which indeed is difficult for most people to do.Like somebody said,Finidi was an ordinary local player for Sharks on Saturday and by next wekend he was already playimg with the Rikaards,Gulits who were the best in the world at that time.A national team coach must see beyond the ordinary.Westerhof saw beyond the Edodbor's,Omokaro's,Eboigbe's,Ekpo's,Ayo Ogunlana etc of his era and gave us a brand new team. All the players in the team today either came from the U-20 or were already established stars in their own right. There are still many more from where the Finidi's and Amokachi's came from.A National Team coach shd not be an aveage coach, he shd stand out b able to do extra ordinary things.Amodu, at best, is your regular everyday coach.

Posted by Gee on Nov 20 2009

We need a technically sound coach and so happens it will have to be a foreigner, simple. no sinking and swimming with an inept coach!

Posted by Emmanuel Udom on Nov 20 2009

No shaking only if we stop playing Individual skill foot and we should work on our technical committee or sack the entire coaching crew.

Posted by seyi tim on Nov 20 2009

What is the big deal in Eagle being group with Cameroon,Cotedivore or Ghana, Do they need to get scare of any team. What they need now is serious and early preparation thats all.period

Posted by canisius on Nov 20 2009

fifa rankings of this month cameroon 11,ivory coast16,nigeria 22,algeria 28,and ghana 37.

Posted by micah on Nov 20 2009

Why should we be afraid of Cameroon,Ghana ivory coast as far as world football is concern we are number one in Africa. so we are going to be hot in Angola 2010

Posted by KC on Nov 20 2009

@Micah, Lets be realistic football in this time, is unpredictable, it is not Algebra or Geometry that we can say "right angles are always Ninety degrees, hence Nigeria will win matches because they the GIant of Africa." What we need are players who are committed like no team of players we have ever had in the past; we also need a coach who knows the job very well (but however coaches don't do MAGICs),we have to be patient with any coach we have at any point in time. And if a coach is not doing his job as a coach whether Foreign or indeginous we should relief him of his job.

Posted by TATA on Nov 21 2009

okay my people...i surrender make una change una coach if una like...but make una keep money to pay the man wen him come..o...i no wan hear story...o...me i support de average everyday coach wey make us qualify twice...and de man na my paddy man...
