FIFA U-17 World Cup winners, Switzerland jubilating after the award was presented to them in Abuja on Sunday.

Our boys blew it!

Print print Email email Share Share

The Golden Eaglets on Sunday failed in their quest to become the first team in the history of the FIFA U-17 World Cup to defend the trophy after losing by a lone goal to Switzerland at the National Stadium in Abuja.

The Eaglets also failed in their bid to become the first host nation in the history of the cadet tournament to win the trophy.

And it was all due to the team’s inability to convert the numerous chances that came their way in the encounter, watched by a capacity crowd at the 60,000-seater stadium.

The turning point of the encounter arrived in the 63rd minute when Haris Seferovic nodded the Swiss into the lead from a corner kick for his fifth goal of the tournament.

Five minutes earlier, the towering striker of local Swiss side, Grasshoppers, had found himself face-to-face with Golden Eaglets goalkeeper Dami Paul but he failed to bring a save out of the Nigerian keeper who unlike his opposite number in the Swiss goal, Benjamin Siegrist, was mostly on holidays.

Swiss hero

Siegrist was undoubtedly the hero of the Swiss team as he pulled off save after save to deny the Golden Eaglets a fourth world title, especially in the first half.

The opening 45 minutes was played at a frenetic pace and the Golden Eaglets could have shot into the lead as early as the 4th minute through Abdul Ajagun but his shot from the edge of the area was cleared off the goal line by a Swiss defender with Siegrist well beaten.

A minute later, Siegrist was on hand to make three saves in quick succession, the first two from the boots of Stanley Okoro, and the third from a speculative long range effort by Aigbe Oliha.

The Golden Eaglets continued to make incursions and appeared the more likely side to open scoring, especially through Sani Emmanuel, who was handed a rare start by John Obuh, and the hardworking Ajagun who continued to prove more than a handful for the Swiss defence who had the Aston Villa goalkeeper to thank for keeping the score line barren at the half way point of the game.

Emmanuel should actually have put the Eaglets in front a minute into the added time, but a minute after seeing his tame effort easily saved by Siegrist, the youngster failed to curl his shot past the goalkeeper after making his way into the Swiss vital area.

More heroics

The second half saw Siegrist continuing with his heroics, first, in the 58th minute from Stanley Okoro, and then in the 69th minute from Emmanuel, six minutes after his side had shot into the lead. In the 78th minute, the 17-year-old pulled off, perhaps, the most important save of the day when seconds after seeing his crossbar rattled by a Nigerian header, he used everything at his disposal, from his hands to his legs, to keep out the ball from going into the net in the midst of a sea of Nigerian legs.

And by the time the Uruguayan referee, Martin Vazquez, blew for the end of proceedings, Nigerian fans at the venue had started filing out of the stadium and weren’t around to witness the presentation ceremony that saw Golden Eaglets midfielder, Ramon Azeez, claim the Bronze Ball with his industrious team mate, Emmanuel, carting home the Golden Ball as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, alongside the Bronze Boot after finishing as the tourney’s third leading scorer with five goals.

But considering all the controversies that trailed the Nigerian side, particularly on the actual ages of the players all through the duration of the championship, does anyone feel that justice has been served?

This is painful indeed...Switzerland accepts monies stolen by our leaders and now it has taken away our cup. Painful, very painful.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Swiss! It was not easy tto come into that cauldron at Abuja and snatch the cup off the host nation. However, CONGRATS to the Eaglets as well. They age controversy aside, they restored my love in the free-flowing beauty and artistry that can be Nigerian football. Finally, CONGRATS to all the teams (and officials) who came here to Nigeria, and to those who made it a memorable tournament. All that said, I AM DELIRIOUS THAT WE ARE GOING TO SA 2010!

Justice served. We cant cheat our way to the top all the time, it ll have been a catastrophic failure on FIFA is a cheating nation won the trophy. Our captain was said to be 18 yrs old 7 years ago playing for sharks by the club's chairman, Something needs to be done about our cheating ways in EVERYTHING.

Posted by Olukayode Anigilaje on Nov 16 2009

They did not tell us that anybody predicted that we were going to lose. Otherwise I would have saved myself the heartache of watching the match. They kept saying (on Sat evening) some people predicted that we were going to SA 2010!

this is just to show that you cant make it thru with a lie. it's gonna bite you somehow. those MEN could not defeat these BOYS...what a shame

Posted by Citizen Q on Nov 16 2009

Now i know there's justice in this world. The boys beat the men! In 4 years time, those swiss babes will be conquering the world. Where will the lying eaglets be? Selling rice at the stadium! Many of them are already in their prime. Go swiss!

Well I greet d swiss team for winning d cup, to me d team played as if they were playing d group stage. The team that won in korea played really well in the final against spain, but dis team did not play, as if it was a final match. They lost d game in d first half, Nff should pls expose our teams, bcos foot ball have gone scientific. We play well bcos we have talented players, so nigerians should pray for another asian country to host so that we can win it for the fourth time. Well done to d swiss team

So only the players cheated without any "assist"? Nigerians have been living one big lie and we ALL are suddenly saintly. Somebody has said it - we don't see the evil in us? How many Nigerian bus conductors will give you change if you forget to ask for it? How many passengers try to get a ride without paying the conductor? Was it not in this country that a man stole from his employer and started making significant contributions to the church therefrom? Everybody holding an elective public office in Nigeria is a crook. Proof? How did they get their party tickets? Soludo's nomination is an example. As for hating cheating - do we remember that when former Gov Ngige started performing, people started praying that the court would not void his rigged election. This is a country where we uphold flawed elections and annulled the most free. That tells about our character. Of course, I don't like cheats, but are we not really fraudulent? Obj announced to the whole world while commonwealth heads of government were here in 2004(?) that Sunday Afolabi etal were gulity of national ID scam. Yes Sunday Afolabi died, but what happened to the other accused persons? When did Bode Geroge case arise? Why did Obj government not prosecute and secure a conviction. But Obj was always talking about figthing corruption. Let us make up our minds now that nobody who will be 1 minute older than the age limit should be in national colours on the first day of Mexico 2011. If we insist on the full team list and photographs being made public 3-6 months before the competition, some people will alert us before the competition and save us any national disgrace.

Switzerland really deserved the win; they played better than we did, they had better ball control, more accurate passes, better team work and above all, better scoring abilities. Our players were more concerned with ball possession-nonsense! Okoro S. was the worst man of the match. He lacked scoring sense, displayed poor control of the ball and when he passed, it was to an opponent. And this was the same majority of the boys . Our Coach even acted like he was not there live-when he made changes, he removed Emmanuel who was playing far better than Okoro S. and then another player in jersey number 18 who was removed first-such stupid decision! We lost on home soil to a team that came to the world cup for the first time. Our boys were a huge disappointment last night! This is why I sometimes hate to be a Nigerian- So shameful!

Serve Nigeria right. A house built on sands can not last. Like the Yorubas will say "Ile ti a fi ito mo, iri ni o ma wo." I have never been more embarrassed in my life. So what happened to the men who couldn't even manage with the boys? Shame shame shame.

Posted by abraham idowu on Nov 16 2009

who be 'our boys'? haven't they been proved beyond reasonable doubt to be grandads? shouldn't we be thanking God that their cheating ways did not profit them? hopefully a few dozen nigerians would be dissuaded from pursuing such short cuts in their own lives as a result of this dubious but ultimately unprofitable venture. some people's papas failed in their criminal enterprise but no boys of mine where among them.

Age-cheating in Nigerian football is a merely of the Nigerian state to perform such basic govt functions as accurate record-keeping. Morally, it is no more insidious than the forging of papers (including visa-related documentation) and certificates, the fake green-card weddings, the fake family deaths to get vacation time, etc that myriad Nigerians (probably including some have commented on this thread) have liberally indulged in. So instead of feigning righteous indignation and chasing shadows in derogation of substance, fix the system (and the institutions that underlay same) and age cheating would become a thing of the past. Unfortunately, in our chaotic (and often hypocritical) manner that we collectively conduct our national affairs, folks are too busy obsessing about allegations of age fraud, while the entire national superstructure that enables (and in fact, sometimes actively promotes) is crumbling all around us -- with our active or passive participation.

I do think the Swiss deserved their win; they were the better team by far. Our guys tried sha, it just was not their day. What I thought was absolutely ridiculous is those fireworks! I mean couldn't they wait till the end of the match? I thought it wasn't a great idea in Lagos since it was the semi final but in Abuja where we were chasing a goal it was laughable. We really should stop making a fool out of ourselves on this kind of level; it was totally unnecessary even if we had won.

It is easy to cry foul and make noise about someone else's hidden sin when it is not us in the spot light. If we are all so innocent that make such 'wonderful and thoughtful' comments on the pages of papers and in the airwaves, how come our country is still suffering? Is not what you allow that will happen? We should stop making noise when we are key to the problems. The Eaglets did their own and so did the Swiss. One side must win and it wasn't Nigeria. If you want a change in something, you must change your approach to that thing. Talking achieves nothing until you do something about all that talk. Selah...

Posted by K.O. on Nov 16 2009

Nigerian are some of the worst fans in the world. When your team loses, you rubbish their names in public and bring up stories about your terrible government, corrupt leaders, or even racism toward Africans and other injustices. You call for the head of the coach, or now in the case bring up the topic of Swiss banks accepting looted money from Nigerian military leaders. Just the headline alone is saddening. Why would you say they blew it. Jack Warner praised Nigeria for a well organised and hosted event. Nigeria should be proud of itself. No other country has won back to back. And you hosted a single tournament in every major region of the country without a major scandal. You even avoided possible danger with MEND threatening to ruin the event in the delta. And you made it to the final, for goodness sake! Why can't you be more positive? Where does this inferiority complex come from? Keep it up and more and more of your players will continue to run away to foreign teams until the day comes where every team you play against will have a Nigerian on their side!

Posted by Akintokunbo A Adejumo on Nov 16 2009

The Swiss not only deserve to win, our boys deserve to lose. They were very selfish and the commentators observed that trait in them. Each od then was very selfish, especially S Okoro. The Coach was not able to identify this problem all thoughout the competition. I dont know how they got to the Finals with this problem, but they did, and it had to come out on the long run. They were not playing with waht they call Team Work. They were playing for individual glory.

God served judgment at the right time, even with old men we couldn't win. pls checkout the swiss number 4,too too young lookout for him and not okoro in the future.

I am proud of Nigerians who went to the stadium... if our football and sports authorities can apply themselves to our national leagues and make watching them in stadiums an attractive option for Nigerians, then our league will be the better for it! Good stuff!

The Swiss deserved the victory. Nigeria played better than them in the 1st half, but didnt manage to score-also thanks to the swiss great defense. The swiss played a gread 2nd half and had more luck. That's the game! and they didnt have nothing to lose. Nigeria shouldnt have taken the victory for granted!

the coach john obuh, stanley okoro, and sani emmanuel were the cause of our loss to the swiss enterprising team, the coach made a mistake by starting emmanuel sani who is suppose our super sub and he sani was busy playing selfishely for him to emerge the golden booth winner, stanley okoro since the inception of the tournerment, has not been a team player,he so selfish,he dosnt realease the ball on time, infact he is the worst attacker of this tournerment, congrat swiss team.

Posted by Bibi on Nov 16 2009

As soon as I saw Emmanuel in the in start-up line, I knew John got it wrong. Why on earth will you joke with your joker?! Emmanuel is a good sub, a Super-sub, and not a good starter. He's good at coming in after having studied a match, to come do the needful. But John thought otherwise! I wonder what technical skills our Technical crews are made up of. Wishing the boys (sorry, old men) more luck in their future endearvours.

We Lost in Abuja because we won and qualified for the world cup in Nairobi! It is very rare in life to be two times lucky in two straight days. We played, had more opportunity and more shots at goal but the 'God of Football', if there's any decided to favour another side after what he did for us 24 hours earlier. We were runners up and we are in South Africa....thats good enough for me

Posted by Amara Nwankpa on Nov 16 2009

This is a cynical report. Reads like a tabloid. I'm appalled by it. "Our boys blew it"? What did they blow? Can we at least appreciate the fact that the Eaglets did what no other host has done in the history of the competition? Get to the final? This was a team of boys hurriedly assembled barely 2 months to the tournament. Yet, they were within half an hour of winning it. Having a legitimate goal unfortunately disallowed and losing to a Swiss team that had played together for 3 years by a narrow margin? They "blew" it? So much for looking to 234Next for thought leadership. Y'all are flattering to deceive.

Posted by wale rossy shittu on Nov 16 2009

I dnt know why some Nigerians are not good losers. I believe that most of the earlier commentators, who are condemning the eaglets, were the same set of people who were praising them when they got to the final.Well, the eaglets have done well. They lost to ill luck and selfishness. If stanley okoro wants to make somethinng out of football, he should learn how to be a team player. The MVP award which was his target, he was not even included among the top three. Coach Obuh, good outing. But you made a very big mistake by starting emmanuel.Maybe you did that for him to win the golden booth award. If that is the case, you ruined the team yourself cos by doing so, you have encouraged selfish play. And that was wat killed the team. Anyway, congrats to you all.

Posted by Toyin Ade on Nov 16 2009

The boys really blew it big time. They has tens of opportunities but failed to utilise them and convert them to goals. Eaglets ought to have won nothing less than 6-1 goals but they failed woefully. It was as if they were afraid to score or something manipulating them to blow all their chances. Anyway, they need to learn from their errors and I will advise the football administrators to upgrade the boys to under 20 players and groom them together in good time so that they can blend together early enough.

Bibi, u are right, sani was a super sub but you know why? only an old man like him should be able to read game the way he usually does,Big shame indeed, 60000 nigerians packed in the national stadium to cheer cheats. Big boss, you dey read paper at all, you no read yesterday guardian where Blatter confirmed the incidence of overaged players? i guessed u read papers like thisday that purposely failed to report it. To Tinubu and co wey wan fight electoral fraud in Nigeria, i thought it would have kickstarted their fights if they had voiced out concerns about the fraud called the Nigerian under 17 team. to my cousin, sola, you can now see why we are a Nation of no hopers?

@Ologbojo. I am ashamed that YOU are a ‘Nigerian’. enuff said. In the spirit of Sportsmanship the better team won but the eaglets made me proud. Also could we all stop belly aching and advice that we look inward. ‘LET’S CHANGE WE AND SWEEP AWAY THE REMNANTS OF MENTAL COLONISATION’.

Posted by Bayo on Nov 16 2009

The game showed that a moderately talented but very well organised team will usually beat a more talented but less organised team. The Nigerian players were very talented (Ramon Azeez a perfect example) but unfortunately many of then chose the final to contract 'hollywood-itis'! Lots of examples of players seeking personal glory rather than the applying the same team ethic that took then to the final. Unfortunately, Stanley Okoro was a glaring example of this affliction. Talented though he is, the need to try to beat every opponent when he got the ball made him predictable and very easy to mark and most probably cost his a transfer abroad as he was the perfect emobdiment of a 'non-team' player (Stanley always remember, less is more!) But they are young (we hope!) and they will learn. The likes of Azeez and the goalkeeper will do well in future with proper guidance.

Posted by Meshack Abed Abadom on Nov 16 2009

We should be very generous, the boys tried and we should acknowledge that with the shoddy preparations as it is usula with us and lack of equipment we got to the finals? Abeg we try well well bo. What we should be talking about is the fielding of overaged players in the furue. The coach should be given a national hounor for achieving this and he must be encouraged so that he can do more for our beloved country. At this point we must realize how footbal has becoming a unifying sport in Nigeria and must develop it in our national psyche to heal our wounds.

Well done Golden Eaglets for getting to the final. These teenagers showed that the youth of Nigeria at least football wise have some passion for the country. These boys should be praised and not ridiculed. Also John Obuh their coach was outstanding. To get to the final after being 3-0 down at half time in their opening game speaks volumes for the team and their handlers. As for the armchair world cup managers its very easy to talk when you are not playing on the field or as a coach having to watch and motivate your boys. The Golden eaglets and their handlers should hold their head high.

Posted by ASUQUO JAMES on Nov 16 2009

It is desirable we didn't win because our "super eaglets" cheated. The Almighty doesn't sleep and thankfully, He heard the prayers millions of corrupt-free Nigerians who were miffed at the "overage scandal." Well, these guys can now be conscripted into the 'super eagles' team B, they fit as good alternative.

Posted by obasi nnaemeka on Nov 16 2009

the boys tried though they did not cup. i think the current should be kept together for the U20 team. the work should be done to make them imbibe team spirit rather than chasing after personal glory. i congratulate the coach and the boys for a job well done, after-all, Egypt hosted U20 world cup but was knocked out after the preliminaries.

we cant win all the time Nigerians! what if we didnt get the world cup 2010 ticket and won the under 17, would that have been better? lets look at the positive sides of a well hosted tournament and learn from our mistakes......one of which is the age cheating saga....there is so much proof that our "boys are above 17" lets correct this in future. We have what it takes to keep excelling as a nation when we do things right.

Some Nigerians are clowns who love lies. Your boys were not good enough so let us not blame the coach this time. Your boys cannot keep away from women that's why they always lose. Nigerians are better than the Swiss but sex mad. Europeans keep away from women when they play ball. You are free to investigate because the truth is bitter. Naija team did not deliver their best... Nigerian footballers are better when they play for foreign teams where they are monitored 24/7.

The truth is that every country that participated in this competition had an over age syndrome. Victory is Hard, success is sweet. The swiss capitalized on our weakness. They expected so much from us,and were ready to face the challenge, fortunately it paid off for them. Yes,we lost at home, its painful n bitter, but we cant change it not even now that the cup is is in Swiss. So let pray for the Super Eagles to perform better at the world cup, bcos it's not just qualifying and we are eliminated at the at the fist round. SUPER EAGLES HAVE SO MUCH WORK TO DO.
