Eaglets beat Spain, cruise into final

After beating Spain 3-1 in the semi-final on Thursday in Lagos, Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets, face determined newcomers, Switzerland in the final of FIFA U-17 World Cup on Sunday.

Two goals from substitute Sani Emmanuel and one from midfielder, Stanley Okoro, ensured that the Nigeria ladsremained on course for a successful title defence.

After overcoming their nerves, which had them ambling aimlessly across the pitch, the Eaglets settled into thegame with Okoro leading the charge on Spain’s goal. They got lucky on 30 minutes when Okoro, displaying calm displaced his marker to slot home Nigeria’sfirst goal. The first half ended 1-0 in favour of the Eaglets.

Nigeria increased the lead about thirty minutes in the second half through substitute, Sani Emmanuel, who pouncing on a throw in, coolly slotted in for his fourth goal of the tournament.

He made it three for Nigeria on 71 minutes. Spain scored a consolation and that was all it was.

Meanwhile, Switzerland went through to the final of the FIFA U-17 World Cup, and made their Colombian opponents, who remained undefeated in their previous five matches, look ordinary, hammering them 4-0.

A goal by Ben Khalifa in the 14th minute, another by Harris Seferovic in the 36th, made sure the Swiss took a two-goal lead into the break, ending the first half 2-0, with both scorers extending their goal haul to four each in the tournament.

Colombia’s tactics came undone in the 13th minute when Santiago Arias was given a straight red for impeding a goal bound move in the box, and Khalifa slotted home the resultant penalty.

The Colombians recovered momentarily, and almost equalised in the 17th minute, but the header from a Colombia surge was turned out for a corner, another free kick missed the target before a pass from Sead Hajrovic split the Colombia defence and allowed Seferovic to run clear and slot home for Switzerland’s second goal.

Bruno Martignoni made the numerical advantage count, and the match a no- contest when he blasted home from the edge of the area, five minutes into the second half. Attacks from Switzerland showed there was more to come.

At this stage, Lagos fans were cheering the Swiss and booing every move made by the Colombians. With the noise of the vuvuzela adding to the atmosphere, the Swiss added the fourth goal, which came from Ricardo Rodriguez in the 58th minute.

Next, why did you also join in exposing Okoro as an old man playing among his children? This guy is not too old at 35! I love Naija, I hate Adokiye who cant keep quiet about the obvious!

Posted by wesley on Nov 13 2009

@Erus - It was no power failure. The lights (or part of it) were switched off for the fireworks that followed immediately the game ended. And the fireworks was beautiful... No need to be ashamed

There are so many wide mouths reading this page, why are you so concerned about this guys age or have you forgotten that we are in the jet or computer age?. All we need now is the cup and not birth certificates of players. Myself ll play for u-17 in 10 yrs time.

U guys shuold pls watch ur mouths. Why not appreciate d gud work of dis boyz who are determind to resurect our interesp 4 d round leather game where other categories of d national team have faild. Pls Nigerian cheer eaglets up & forget whether they are old or young, handsome or ugly. They cant be d oldest in tournament.

It s time we started believing in ourselves. Whether these guys are older or younger, whether the light went off or not, all i have to say is that the eaglets played a fantastic game and we loved it. Flying eagles and super eagles have failed us but these guys are doing us proud. Enjoy the Game!

Let your concern be the score line not the happenings in the stadium. What happened yesterday was well planned, the fire work was installed in the stadium for this purpose, our "Action Governor" was there, Vice-President, was there and many important personalities, whatever thing you see in the stadium yesterday was well planned, be rest assured. All for the glory of the cup, "OUR LAND, OUR CUP".

i'm glad the game ended in our favour. but i'm surprised this age thing is still floating around. what happened to the MRI scan? was it not applied to the u-17? if FIFA is ok wit our players y can't some of us be happy? i de weak for some peeps!

Posted by Michael K. on Nov 13 2009

It is appalling that many Nigerians support this fraud. We drink fraud, eat fraud, dream fraud and play fraud. Why then do we blame Olabode George when there are millions of fraudsters in the nation? Indeed, great nation, fraudulent people.

Posted by efeman on Nov 13 2009

Interestingly, some of us have Under-17 children at home, or better put...we have friends and family with 17-year-old children. This age-cheat by Nigeria is just too obvious...4rm Okoro to Captain Chukwudi. At times I 1der if FIFA is staging an Under-25 tournament or U-17. Of a truth, most of the other teams in the tournament featured over-aged players but naija`s is just too much!

Posted by Frank Ekeh on Nov 13 2009

IN FACT NIGERIA U-17 IS TOO MUCH FOR THIS GAME THE PLAYED YESTERDAY,I MUST TALK THE THROUGH OKORO,EMMANUEL AND CHUKWUDI THERE ARE FATHER FOR U-17 PLAYER LET THEM KEEP ON WITH THIS HAND.

Posted by Obi O. on Nov 13 2009

To Michael K., what fraud are you talking about? We are so used to shouting fraud in our daily lives we create one in our minds even when there isn't one. Fifa said the MRI testing was researched over 6 years, they can now determine ages (not age ranges) accurately to a 99 percent precision. The entire team passed the test. Anyone making comments about their ages must make sure he/she was there when the person in question was born. About the lights, they went out a split second after the ref raised his hands and blasted the final whistle. Then came back on and blinked slowly, to match the fireworks. Beautifully done.

Posted by Pius O on Nov 13 2009

Please, I will like to know whether there was an MRI scan by FIFA on the players. If yes, then that is the available most objective empirical way to determine the age of the players. Looks can be deceptive sometimes!!!

Posted by FLORIANA on Nov 13 2009

I am a 36 year old Nigerian and desire to play for nigeria in two years time. Can i still play for Under 17? Pls i need urgent answer!

Posted by Uncle Demo on Nov 13 2009

All the countries in the u-17 world cup are age cheats!! Nothing FIFA can do 'bout that. It was a wonderful game. Regardless of what happens to ''not so super'' eagles on Saturday, I wish we win the Trophy. GOD BLESS NIGERIA!!!

Posted by Obi O. on Nov 13 2009

To Efaman and Frank Ekeh, there is no way to determine the age of anyone between 15 and 26 by just looking at them. Maturity rates vary greatly between individuals. Some families have a history of all males being over six feet tall, and I have seen kids from such leanage looking 30 at 15. The best athletes also tend to develop faster than there peers. Go to a secondary school and ask for the school's soccer team players and compare their build to the average nerd in their class. If one was searching all over Nigeria to find players phyiscally and mentally very mature at 15, you will find thousands. We are speaking of the best and most mature 16 and 17 year olds from a population of over 140 million, there is no way they will look like your average 17 year old.

Posted by Simon Adadu on Nov 13 2009

Nigeria always sacrify immediate short term success for a developmental programme which can get us the Sennior World Cup in approximately 8years time. It is obvious our U-17 are overaged (a super eagles team in an u-17 tourney). where are the opabunmis, browns, karimu shaibu, Eyimofes of d 2001 set (Tevez, Pongolle, Fabregas)

The Eaglets have done the nation proud. Lets support these boyss! Lets leave the issue of age fro FIFA to judge. Afterall the IMR machine was used on these boys. The eaglets truelly are out to retain the cup. Why should nigeria government approve vuvuzela. Is not part of nigeria culture. Na wa this government no dey think well at all before dey take certain decisions

Posted by Gerard Onochie on Nov 13 2009

Typical of most Nigerians. Always looking at the negative aspects of life. These young boys are bringing joy to Nigerians and football fans worldwide. I am looking forward to them winning and retaining the cup. To the people on here who get a hard on by always making cynical comments the more you snipe the more these gallant young eaglets keep winning. What a shame I cannot be at the final. Kudos to all the states that have hosted the tournament you are doing Nigeria proud despite the naysayers!!!

UP GREEN EAGLES

Posted by Omo Eko on Nov 13 2009

Reading the threads, it seems some of our fellow Nigerians are saying 'it does not matter if we are fielding over aged players, as long as we win and we don't get found out'...there lies the main problem facing the country.

Posted by TOS on Nov 13 2009

That other Nations alos have overage players in their team is no excuse to condone the cheating that has become the trademark of age-grade tournament worldwide. The issue here is that we do keep records from cradle-to-grave. It is not this guys problem, they just couldn't help but join the system that groomed them. The NFF management are the real culprit who needed this "success" at all cost to make-up for their obvious and numerous failures. People start cheat about age from the time they start rewriting WAEC/GCE. You can just enter any local government council office and obtain birth certificates that meets your needs. WE DON'T NEED ANYONE TO TELL US THAT WE LIVE IN A FAILED STATE. The facts are there. --Senegal with 12m people and not crude at all will start refining crude for 9ja with 150m+. what a shame........

Posted by Olu. Awotunsin on Nov 13 2009

Until we get am right from the top, the cheating go dey continue. Cheating Governor, cheating Senator, cheating IWU INEC

Posted by Dapo on Nov 13 2009

Next, is it not news worthy that hundreds if not thousands of fans who had tickets to the game were deined entry to the stadium with no explanation given? Is it not news worthy that people with ticktes were routinely beaten up and chased with dogs by the police and army outside the venue? I saw visitors to our country almost crushed as the police violently chased ticket holders for the game away from the stadium gate. I saw a man with ticket being pushed to the ground and slapped with a rifle magaizine by a mobile policedman outside the game. Most people I saw and spoke to could show me their tickets but they weren't allowed to enter and risked physical assault for presenting their tickets. Its shocking. Its a disgrace. We must never host an international event until the police and armed services learn how to behave.

Posted by Blessing on Nov 13 2009

U guys talk abt age! age! age! and age is it only Nigerians players' dat are over age in dis tournament? Even d onyibo's de cheat, so why talk abt Nigerians only. 4 once let's try 2 b patrotic citizens

Posted by Olu. Awotunsin on Nov 13 2009

@ Michael k., My brother, weting concern Olabode George for this matter now? Make una leave Deputy Chairman dey enjoy his sabbatical for Kirikiri Villa jeje.

Posted by semmy on Nov 13 2009

why do u think Nigeria win the u-17? we use people we are supposed to use as super eagles?

Posted by Chris O on Nov 13 2009

Age! Our former president couln't place his actual age. Civil servants have official age; its not new. Remember, the MRS machine was used on these players which disqualified 19 of them and pushed the coach and the NFF to scout for these fresh players. If FIFA says they are under 17 lets just take it for it except FIFA is made in Nigeria. All the same, it was a wonderful match and i just hope these group of guys are groomed to become the super eagles in future. Kudos!

Posted by Godson Okeke on Nov 13 2009

Elijah and Gideon, I see that the two of you lack home training. How can you say they should remove Elder Stanley Okoro's picture from this page? Elders no dey una village? Children of nowadays!

Posted by Elliot-USA on Nov 13 2009

@Personal,@ Obi O.Tell me about it.FIFA used the age scanning on all the players.I just wonder why some of these folks are so focused on the age. Please send all, your complains to FIFA.You will never, ever see an American be so negative of a fellow American.I hope all these fellas, will do the same or just turn off your tv and not watch the game.

Why are Nigerians always in the habit of thrashing Nigerians. The country needs total orientation. Never have I seen people so negative about their country. Where're the citizenship and patriotism? When has this country gone so bad? Reading comments from Nigerians at home and in diaspora, it's all negativity, talking down the country and even in the face of Nigerians excelling! Compared with other countries, no country is perfect and specifically talking about age-cheat, can these bunch of Nigerians ignorantly mouthing vouch for the true ages of the other boys in this competition? The fact that they are "oyibo" does not mean that they do not cheat. Pretty easy to stay in your Nigerian villages and despise people and that our country is bad and the other countries are perfect. It's total ignorance!! One poser: Does being old make one a better player? You still need to be skillful and have the attributes of a good footballer. Age here does not account for football excellence. Therefore, those ungrateful Nigerians should either live with it or change their nationalities. We are better off without this BUNCH!!!!

Posted by Nandi P. Bette on Nov 13 2009

No amount of baseless arguments about age can remove the glamour from these marvellous bunch of talented Eaglets. Wether we believe it or not, these young patriots have not only rebranded the Nigerian game, but also removed the Hypertension inflited on many fanatical soccer loving compatriots, of late, by the poor outings of the "Flying" and "Super" Eagles. It is juat unfortunate that some of us have chosen to use the so-called Age Factor to try to ridicule the wonderful effots of these lads who are so determined to write the name of our country in gold. May God forgive all these cynics. The fact remains that we are looking forward to Sunday night when the South African- imported vuvuzelas will rent the air asFortune Ghukwudi collects that coveted Under 17 Soccer trophy for a record 4th time for us. As usual, goodluck Golden Eaglets, and God bless Nigeria!

The Lagos fans who were booing the Colombians and cheering for the Swiss are ignorant, stupid and a disgrace to Africans. Look at the Colombian kids, most of them are African-Colombians who must be very excited to visit Africa --the land of their ancestors -- ,but now, some of them will go back to Colombia with this image of Africans – their brothers -- booing them and cheering for their European opponents to win. They fought hard with 10 men because of bad referee; how could any African and genuine sport fan not sympathize with them. We see African-Americans (The Williams sisters), African-Caribbeans (Lewis Hamilton) and other African sportsmen and women being booed, and jeered by Europeans sports fans because of their race and yet we are doing the same to our own people. We are quick to show hospitality to Europeans but not to our own people. Very shameful indeed! Someone from the the NFA or the government tourist board should apologize to these Colombian kids and even give them a special treat before they leave Nigeria.

Posted by ibrahim on Nov 13 2009

Ndidi, it is a shame you are writing from outside and supporting evil deed. If you know what some honest Nigerians are facing in the hands of these dubious group of people in NFA, NFF even in government, you will scold them in totallity. We need words from you to scold all these dubious people to stop what they are doing to make Nigeria looks better. I am 100% sure where you live the white are always talking negatively about Nigeria, they have been there and have been cheated one way or the other by some Nigerians. Professor Wole Soyinka, may your days be long to get us out of the hands of these cabals. Prof Iwu can you re- write history by cleaning your ass?

APPEARANCE? I knew one of then wen he was growing up and he is just the age he claims to be, my only surprise is that i didnt know him as a good footballer.

Posted by von on Nov 14 2009

First, is FIFA not commenting on that ugly incident of switching off the light when the game was still on,second, it baffles me the way our pple open thier wide mouths to comment about our bozs ages, what about spain,or other countries, is it bcos they,re whites,it,s a pitty we,re too difficult to be pleased.
