SECTION 39: Europe against immigrants

Print print Email email Share Share

The Senate is going to investigate the way Nigerian migrants are treated abroad. But should the thousands of Nigerians risking their lives trying to reach Europe, or living in the shadows there expect quick relief? One such is ten-year-old Adeoti Ogunsola, who recently tried to hang herself at a British immigration removal centre where she and her family were being detained prior to deportation.

Adeoti's case underlines the urgent need for Nigeria - and indeed other African countries - to come up with workable solutions to the plight of our ‘undocumented' citizens in rich countries. Her family may have been part of the everyday routine of illegal immigration and deportation that is the lot of many undocumented migrants, but recent events suggest that opponents of further immigration into Europe, and outright racists and xenophobes, are becoming increasingly assertive about reversing non-white, non-Christian immigration into ‘Fortress Europe'.

There is Dutch Freedom Party leader, Geert Wilders, who visited London last week after an earlier ban on his entering Britain on the ground that he might provoke religious violence was overturned. Wilders has made some extremely provocative remarks about Islam and the Koran, demanding the end of immigration from Muslim countries into The Netherlands, and deportation and loss of Dutch citizenship for any Muslim convicted of a criminal offence.

His ten-minute film, ‘Fitna', combines these sentiments with images of the 9/11 terrorist attack and Afghan women shrouded in burkas.

A third of Dutch Muslims say that the anti-Islam diatribes of Wilders, who faces trial in Holland for inciting hatred against Muslims, make them definitely want to emigrate, and 40% of them report increased discrimination. But the immigration tribunal, before whom Wilders was represented by a Muslim barrister, upheld his right to enter Britain on the grounds of freedom of speech.

Arriving in Britain five days later, Wilders was met by angry Muslim demonstrators who exercised that right by waving banners with slogans such as "Freedom Go To Hell" and "Geert Wilders Deserves Islamic Punishment".

Which suited Wilders perfectly. He is one of several politicians in Europe who are benefitting from anti-Islamic populism.

Although some, like Wilders call themselves secular libertarians, their anti-immigration stance and targeting of Muslims in particular, have earned them the label ‘far right'. And success at the polls.

Take Wilders. Freedom Party's sole representative in the 150-strong Dutch Parliament in 2007, his party now boasts nine members, with 15% support in the polls.

In Switzerland, despite benefitting because the United Nations and many other international organisations are based there (not to mention huge sums that have flowed into the Swiss economy from all corners of the globe including Islamic countries) the Swiss Peoples Party won the general election while its leader was campaigning to amend Switzerland's constitution to prohibit building minarets on mosques.

Meanwhile, far-right leaders from Belgium, Germany and Austria have launched a charter "against the Islamisation of western European cities".

In Britain, the far-right anti-immigrant British National Party, which claims to speak for the white working class, does not target only Muslims. But it too is riding the anti-Islam wave to electoral success, and this in turn is opening other doors for the party. Its leader, recently-elected Member of the European Parliament, Nick Griffin, appeared on the British Broadcasting Corporation's current affairs programme, ‘Question Time' despite widespread concern that this would give the BNP the ‘oxygen of publicity'. Affording him this platform, it was explained, would expose the hollowness of his arguments.

The commentariat generally gave Griffin's ‘Question Time' appearance a thumbs-down, but BNP supporters were dissatisfied that he failed to take advantage of the national platform provided by the BBC to propagate the party's views, while many white viewers felt that he had been ‘ganged up' on. And although Griffin declared his intention to make an official complaint to the BBC, his party is not complaining about the fact that within eight hours of his television appearance, 9,000 people had signed up as potential BNP members.

These may be nothing more than straws blowing in a particularly harsh economic wind. But the chickens of European colonialism, or support for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are coming home to roost in increasing waves of workers and refugees. So it would be foolish to imagine that just because the people that we, or our friends and relations overseas know condemn racism, such ideas can never reach critical mass, or to tell ourselves that this new hostility is towards ‘fundamentalist' Muslims and will stop there. The lesson from Pastor Niemoller's words written during the time of Nazi terror was not just that his not speaking out ultimately left him defenceless, but that ‘they' never stopped at just one group. ‘They' dealt with all their perceived enemies, one after the other, Communists, Trade Unionists, Jews... Today we might add - Muslims, non-whites...

So our government needs to think not only about the treatment of Nigerian migrants abroad, but arrangements that would allow even unskilled Nigerians to work abroad legally, coming and going openly. And of course, whether, after two-and-a-half years of stagnation, it is going to do anything at all about making Nigeria a country that Adeoti and her family would be happy to return to.

Why is an African who is NOT racially European even allowed to speak about the BNP? She is an outsider and does not belong. Send her to Russia. We have a very efficient and brutal way of dealing with non-european invaders.

A ten year old, though she is considered a minor, she understands the state of hopelessness that her country is. It surely looks absurd that a ten year old could contemplate taking such a step to protest her family's deportation, it is telling the authorities that no matter their condition abroad, either legal or illegal, going back to Nigeria would represent a fall into an economic and social fire. We just saw children at Auntie Ayo Junior School in Lagos in a furnitureless classroom.THE ONLY MEASURE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT CAN TAKE IS TOWARD ECONOMIC SANITATION OF THE COUNTRY. Let there be jobs for those who are ready to work and good It is useless going abroad to help people who left the country to avoid harsh economic situation. However those who may have run into trouble can be assisted in whichever possiblebefore they get into jail. There used to be a popular saying that when you go to Rome, act like Romans. There is no point people leaving their countries taking their religion with them, if your host is not pleased with it.

Posted by MaryJ on Nov 01 2009

The Africans made the white man leave their continent. Why now do you think it is "racist" if the white man doesn't want you on THEIR continent? How are whites treated again today in South Africa and Zimbabwe? Why do you think they owe you more tolerant treatment than you give them?

Posted by Roy Gestern on Nov 01 2009

Right winged leaders like Geert Wilders are not rascist, you think the liberal, peace-loving, democratic, open people of the Netherlands are all of a sudden rascist to muslims? there is something else going on, and this problem does have to deal with islamic culture. The culture of Islam is too different from any other western culture, its easy to see most of the problem areas in the world (Israel, Kashmir, siberia...) have clashes between muslims and non-muslims. This society is not yet ready to integrate into western society, immigration from muslim states should be stopped.

Posted by kokoko on Nov 01 2009

I wonder how placards saying "Geert Wilders Deserves Islamic Punishment" will help Islam be more acceptable in Europe.....Anyway, the whole thing about religion is just plain BS. Nigerians who live abroad seem to tell themselves that Europe or America is paradise...very funny, they should ask Ibori how much money, power and freedom he had while living in Europe compared to living in Nigeria.

Posted by mikey on Nov 01 2009

The first step to solve this problem is to fix our economy so that we would not have to travel abroad. And even when we travel abroad we would have dignity. When people know that it is hunger that drove you out of your father's land, they tend to treat you like dirt.

Posted by kokoko on Nov 01 2009

@ Roy Gestern, I see your point and empathise with it. Differnce in cultures can really be a problem...the many religious riots in northern Nigeria I am sure has something to do with culture. Just like in the Netherlands where the dominant western culture is unable to live with Islamic culture, so too have moslems who dominate northern Nigeria been unable to live peacefully with christians even though they are blacks and Nigerians. I must confess that I am christian and from southern Nigeria who on visiting northern Nigeria was shocked about how different the two parts of the country really are.

Posted by Abdullahi on Nov 01 2009

Roy Gestern what aspects of 'Islamic Culture' are different to the Western cultures in ways that African or Asian, Buddhist or Jewish, if not Christian, cultures are? And in the 21st century Europe that prides itself on being tolerant, diverse, freedom-loving and accommodating, is it a crime to be different? You seem not to get the best part of this article, when Islamophobia becomes acceptable practice because 'Islamic culture is too different to the Western culture', then we are actively enabling a precedence that will ultimately reach us. I wonder if the hundred of thousands of Westerners living in predominantly Muslim countries with 'Islamic cultures' find so much difference that they have not returned to their countries in protest. Wake up and smell the coffee.

Posted by Abdullahi on Nov 01 2009

@ kokoko. I am appalled by your blanket characterization of the ugly incidents that have gone on in the north as something of norther Muslim in identity. It is also a crude oversimplification of the sad events there. I am a Muslim from the Western part of the country and in my whole life, I have not found many Western Christians so openly hostile and belligerent as their Northern brethren. Yes, the Christians in the West have not abused the Qur'an, attacked the prophet of Islam, demonized Islam or attacked the Muslims in the way that the Norther Christians routinely do- well in all fairness most, not all, of them. There are extremists who happen to be Muslims or Christians in the north and it is this trait, couple with a frightening high percentage of illiteracy level, that have been so effectively exploited and subjected to political machinations to disfigure religion.

Posted by Habeeb on Nov 01 2009

@Roy & Kokoko. It is amazing that you both can engage in doublespeak. Is the West not supposed to be the final cradle of MULTICULTURALISM? Or do you not know what that term means? What is happening in the northwestern European country of the Netherlands is Netherlands' failure to grapple with Muslim integration into society. Wherever Muslim find themselves in the world, they preserve their Islamic identity- I'm sure a lot of people who are not Muslims may find this notion hard to understand and accept. But that aside, many people who have jumped unto the 'Islamic culture is different' bandwagon have yet to understand the tenets of the arguments going on in the Netherlands. For instance, Geert Wilder, the maker of the Fitna film the author refereed to, has called for banning the Noble Qur’an, describing the Muslim holy book as “fascist”. These far-right agenda will only serve as a prelude to extreme actions against the group they presently target and pave way for targeting, demonization of many more groups that are 'different'. Despite the unprovoked attacks and their travail though, Dutch Muslims have continued to record astounding successes, the last of such was a Dutch Muslim of immigrant origin, Ahmed Aboutaleb, who was sworn in January as the mayor of Rotterdam, the second-largest city of the Netherlands. It shows clearly that the vast majority of the Dutch people find Geert Wilder's extremism as repulsive as Muslims find it. At least in this we stand shoulder to shoulder. This exemplar show that both Roy and Kokoko are WRONG.

The one and only Ray Ekpu once wrote in thre late eighties that "religion is an opium of the masses". I'm not too sure now if that aphorism was original to him, but it does n't matter. As far as islamisation and anti - islamism are concerned in the west, particularly in the UK where, it's a no win situation. To be honest, one needs to commend the level of religious tolerance and accommodation of the British people, you cannot compare them to the rest of the continental Europe or even Northern Nigeria, to come nearer home. May be that has something to do with their history and sverignity of popular democracy. However, the recent rise in anti-islamism is a product of 9/11 and revisionism in Britain and Spain for example which added more fire to the boiling passion of this hatred. But immigrant muslims too do not help matters by way of adjusting to western culture. There are millions of christains from Western Europe / Americas / rest of the world legally settled in muslim countries but they seldom have problems with their hosts. I have seen many western journalists, particularly women, dressing and comporting themselves as locals when working in these muslim countries particularly Iran , Iraq, Afghaanistan, Middle East and also North Africa. But the reverse is the case when muslims go to predominantly western countries. It is this rigidity and self belief that often draws the angst and apathy of locals. The way things are going, the UK in particular will have lost its identity by year 2050 and replaced by muslim/asian/black multi-culturalism. May be by then, Britain will have been reaping the bad fruits of colonialism and 200 years of slavery.Whether the BNP or the antics of Wilders of this world would be strong enough to stand in the way of this imminent Tsunami would me a matter for historians to take a stance. Finally, people of all races and colours and faiths, including Nigerians of course, would continue to find their ways into Western Europe under all guises and pretensions as long as the curve of poverty, deprivation and crass under-development is possitively skewed in favour of third world countries and world muslims.

Posted by Abdullahi on Nov 01 2009

@ Frank. These Westerners DO NOT have to comport themselves to wearing hijab- and they do not do so. I've seen some of the pictures you must be referring to but these isolated cases you see on your tv screen are mostly done out of respect, for cosmetic purposes- also to score cheap political points. Muslims do this all the time because we are enjoined to regard the Xtians & Jews as people of the book who, despite our doctrinal differences with them, they still deserve our respect. It is sad that we are living at a time that some of these facts have been obscured by both a political and media veil drawn over the genuine history of tolerance and peaceful coexistence. No one exemplified this better than the prophet himself who allowed Najran xtian delegation to stay and worship in his mosque in Medina for three days. No religious personality has demonstrated this level of religious tolerance. It is true that non-Muslims do nothave to comform to the Arabic dress code because the vast majority of non-Muslims living in the East do not dress the way you have seen on your screen, nor do all Muslims living in their home countries dress this way. I have been there and have seen beyond these TV images. I know we all tend to take TV images to represent the fact all the time, but we must be careful in this perception/assumption. You only need to go to Dubai- even some places in Saudi Arabia- and places like that to see what I mean. Again, do you also know that overwhelming majority of Muslims in the west dress exactly like the westerners? Western dresses can and are in fat mostly Islamic, and all Muslims are not enjoined to dress as the Arabs do- so we need to be clear of this distinction in our assessment. These are not the areas of differences. When certain elements of this society stab a woman to death for a piece of cloth on her head as happened in Dresden, Germany earlier this year, or a public official calls for the ban on Qur'an, then that is a complete call to anarchy. If the same things are going on in Islamic countries, they must also be equally condemned. But stop excusing extremism of one side against the other. Islamophobia is well and alive in the West and millions of Muslims have paid for it with their blood.

Posted by Olurode Kehinde on Nov 01 2009

My dear Frank,I think the aphorism is that of Karl Marx.If everyone truly follows the dictates of his religion then there should be no problem. As every religion preaches the same basics tenets and we are largely hypocritical with these issues.

Posted by chika on Nov 01 2009

I fail to see how Islamic culture is fundamentally different from "western" culture, whatever that might be. Can one not be both "western" and muslim? There are Muslims who "fight" for their god, but i see Christians who do this too. There are foolish people in every religion and they shouldnt be seen as representative of their religions. And No, I'm not a Muslim Wilders might have made some elctoral gain, same as griffin and other far right extremists, but these successes are minute and we musn't exaggerate them.

Posted by TATA on Nov 01 2009

@ ABDULAHI "I am appalled by your blanket characterization of the ugly incidents that have gone on in the north as something of norther Muslim in identity". YES IT IS. WHY? BECAUSE YOU HAVE BEEN DOING IT REGULARLY SINCE THE 1950'S AND NO EMIR OR SULTAN HAS EVER IN LIVING MEMORY COME OUT TO CONDEMN ANY INCIDENT. SILENCE MEANS CONSENT.

Posted by kokoko on Nov 01 2009

@ Abdulahi, well I am sorry you are appalled at my comments but I dont think you understand me so let me try repeat again: Roy mentioned that the dominant western culture finds moslems different and wants them to leave The Netherlands. I believe thats also how moslems who predominate in the north of Nigeria find christians different and sometimes decide to kill them off instead of asking them to leave like the Dutch are doing. Your excuse about northern moslems killing off christians becasue they "abuse" the Quran I also find appalling. @ Habeeb, thank you but I know what multiculturalism means. However, I think its all about political correctness. Nothing beats the fallacy of multiculturalism. It keeps people at the margins of the society they immigrated into and the original inhabitants always find that repulsive. Dont BS yourself.

Posted by Abdullahi on Nov 01 2009

@ Kokoko. You see this path on which you have set off in your argument inevitably leads to the type of senseless killings we have seen in the north. The tendency to see the world in a polarized way of good people of one religion and bad people because of another religion is not only ridiculous, it is dangerous. Let me repeat myself: There are bad people in all religions, not because of the religions but because those people are inherently bad and have resisted the tendency of their religion to make any change in their life. I demonstrated this when I declared that as a Muslim from the western part of Nigeria, I have not observed the xtians in the west behaved in the same deplorable ways as their northern brethren. Do u not want me to make this point when u accuse me of excusing the actions of some Muslims in the north. Why do I have to excuse anyone or anything when I and my religion have nothing to do with such actions? It is time that moderates in both religion recognize the need to alienate the extremists on both sides rather than continue to take the side of the unjust and the transgressors.

Posted by kokoko on Nov 01 2009

@ Abdulahi, no sir, I dont see the world in polar opposites. In fact, I know that good and evil resides in all of us irrespective of religion or tribe. However, I am shocked you think my opinions expressed here can get me killed! I apologise if I have rubbed you the wrong way. Off I go.

While I have no time for Geert Wilders and his ilk, I do wonder how many Muslim countries would allow protesters to protest in the same way that Muslim protesters are allowed to protest in The Netherlands...

Posted by Anjibobo on Nov 01 2009

Ms Obe. For me, the last sentence you wrote about the Nigerian govt sums it up: "And of course, whether, after two-and-a-half years of stagnation, it is going to do anything at all about making Nigeria a country that Adeoti and her family would be happy to return to." That is indeed the heart of the matter. If the govt creates the enabling environment for Nigerians, there will be no need for us to keep fleeing to other people's land for them to be using us to make 'yanga'. This is why it is imperative for us to get our house in order. The two most important things we need to do in this regard are we the people ensuring that our votes are counted by conducting free and fair elections. We must guard our votes jealously. The second is to ensure we the people compel the govt to give us electricity. These two things will give people confidence to know that the people chosen are accountable to them and also give vent to the untapped natural creativity and potential of the average Nigerian. If these can be achieved, our productivity and growth rates will be exponential and ensure people can live prosperous lives in Nigeria.

When you are outside Europe and America looking in, you think the grass on the other side is greener but when you get in, you soon discover that the grass is artificial or synthetic. Given this scenario, African but especially Nigerian immigration to Europe and America will die a natural death. However I take issue with overly and thus emotional left -wing leaning of the Author (Ayo Obey)in regard to Islam. Every rational human-being has reasons to be concerned about Islam, not just Westerners. The Author only have to honestly look at the social, economic, educational disparity between Southern and Northern Nigeria, to see why Westerners are worried. Just last year or so, a female Yoruba teacher in the North was murdered by her own students because they thought she insulted the Koran. The other obvious Abuser of our womenfolk is the islamic dress code. The dress-code is conclusive proof that Islam does not only colonise your mind and intellect but imposes Arabian culture and dresscode on you; thus colonising your entire personality. Let's not go into Sharia. Society regresses not progresses, when people are not allowed to ask difficult and embarrassing questions in their quest to establish intelligent and self-assured reasons for their opinions; but more importantly, their faith. I tend not to dabble into faith issues because in the final analysis, we are accountable to God for our choice of Faith or Faithlessness as an individual person, not collectivelly or corporately. In other words, I'm not going to answer or hold brief for you before God, in respect of YOUR sins and you are not going to, for me. This is why it is awkwardly amusing to see people kill, maim, and destroy the property of another person for not sharing their or any beliefs. It beggars believe that any human being with brain, would really believe they would be rewarded by God for murdering or destroying the property of another person. In my view, the Author should be much more balanced and realistic rather than populist in addressing these issues in a forum like this. Clearly, this is not a pesonal criticism, but in order that it might benefit many more people.

Posted by Abdullahi on Nov 01 2009

@ Philip. You are not alone. Majority of Muslims wonder too why they cannot protest freely in their countries because they are ruled by tyrants propped up and supported by the West. Tell me the last time any credible election took place in any of the so-called Muslim country, save a country like Iran- which again the West hates with passion for its own values in its own country which it is entitled to. Given the chance to elect their own rulers today no single ruler in any of the so-called Muslim country will be in power tomorrow morning- from Saudi Arabia to Tunisia. No single one of them. What amazes me is why people cannot see this obvious fact and allow their judgment to be clouded by their apparent enmity towards Islam which makes them to put blames on the laps of hapless Muslims fleeing tyrannical rules in his country of birth. I know thinking takes some efforts, but for God sake so is writing your opinion in public media like this! It is just like asking Nigerians why they cant protest freely in Nigeria- only the tyrants in the Muslim countries are worse.

Posted by Abdullahi on Nov 01 2009

@Kayode. Your comments stinks. And it is coded with plain bigotry. A xtian teacher was killed but what you refuse to include that a MUSLIM headteacher risked his life and sustained life threatening injuries while shielding her from the vile thugs that attacked her. He battled for his life for months after the attacks. Again, you guys seem so blinded by ur irrational hatred towards Islam that you look for any excuse to attack it- I mean George Bush- a fundamental xtian- on a pack of lies- is responsible for the murder of more than 1 million Muslims that had NOTHING to do with 9-11. How about Marwa Sherbini, the three month pregnant mother of one, who was stabbed 18 times in Dresden earlier this year and killed. During the attack in the courtroom where she was testifying against Alex W. who had attacked her for wearing hijab, Alex was shouting "You don't deserve to live!". All these senseless attacks started when people believe that Islamophobia is cool and it is acceptable for a religion to be demonized.

Posted by Abdullahi on Nov 01 2009

@ Kayode. If it is true that all those crimes you listed are being committed for the difference if faith, how come themore than 12 million Arab xtians have not been wiped out of existence in the Arabian Peninsular and why is it that the Iranian Jews have refused to emigrate to Israel despite the fact that Iran is an Islamic republic. It is people like you on both sides here in Nigeria that are causing and sustaining the problems we are trapped in. People like you. Lastly, it is sad that you can attack the author whom you have described as leaning to the left (left of what in dis case?) You just convenient using terms even if you dont have good grasp of their depth and meanings, dont u? And u dare attack the hijab? What a cheek you've got? And who do you think you are to dictate to the Muslim women what to and what not to wear? Some of the "difficult and embarrassing questions" u shld be asking are why some of your priests are sexually abusing children barely old enough to pronounce their names? And why the church is ordaining open and self-confessed homosexuals. When you have dealt with these questions, then you can read the Qur'an to find answers to the questions you have on hijab. And lastly, what should "beggars believe that any human being with brain" is the fact that you hold up a man who walked on this earth, born of a woman, suffered persecution in the hands of men as your creator. Just imagine that!

I see abdullahi using the usual tactics. In 600AD who elected Mohammad? You can't blame the west 1400 years ago. Islam has not changed. Islam spread throughout the Middle East from Northern Spain to India and Southeastern Europe. By the 1500's they ruled Turkey, Asia Minor, the Balkans, Northern Africa, present day Iran, Saudi Arabia. The Buddhist's of Central Asia (the true religion of peace) took the moral high road (peace) in regards to muslims and they are all dead. In 1396 Ottoman Turks conquored Bulgaria, muslim rule lasted 500 years. They seized lands, property, heavily taxed the people and SLAUGHTERED all those that oppossed them. Bulgarians rebelled 1590's, 1680's, 1730's, 1876 and in 1878 Russia invaded and defeated the Ottoman Turks, forced them to sign the Treaty of San Stefano and give back Macedonia and Thrace to Bulgaria. Then the WEST, the European leaders called the "congress of berlin" replaced the Treaty of San Stefano with the Treaty of Berlin returning most of the terrortiy and rule to the muslims. How things might be different today it the WEST did not prop up the Ottoman Turks... In 1912 Burgaria joined Greece, Montenegro, and Serbia to drive the invading muslims out of Europe called the first Balkan War. Kosovo is Serbia. You can apply this to any country that was and is being conquoured in the name of Islam. It is as relevant today as it was 1400 years ago. If immigration isn't stopped our countries will become the nations that the immigrants have left. Nothing will change for the Nigerians who are left behind when some leave. Multiculturalism is only in the west, Saudi Arabia, China, Japan, South Africa...call them racist or xenophobes. Those words have lost the effect, over used by the usual suspects.

Why don't you make your own country better? Seriously. You went for independence, attained it - so the problems in Nigeria are for Nigerians to solve. You are knocking on Europe's door - but we don't need any more emigres right now particularly. Sorry. The seriuos question remains - why don't you as Nigerian/s sort out your country?

@abdullahi, please stop propagating incorrect information and using thin excuses to justify acts of violence propagated in the name of a particular sect. Google the reports of various enquiries into religious riots in the North and have a glimpse of the trigger factors. From the Tiv riots, Kasuwan Magani, Kafanchan, Tafawa Balewa, Zango Kataf, Kano (Akaluka) Maitatsine, Bauchi, Jos North riots etc. Let me cite some that i witnessed first hand and am lucky to be alive today and recount! Kafanchan, 1987 FCS were having a revival week @ COE, the guest speaker Rev Bako, a muslim convert was quoting from the Quran and is alleged by a muslim sister listening from a class nearby of quoting the verses wrongly! that was the genesis of the riots in Kafanchan (9th March, 1987) immediately the muslim students went for their insha prayers, they were told a blashphemy is being done at the FCS meeting, they responded with stone throwing at the gathering thereof. The rest is now history, ditto its anniversary in 1988, 1989. Fasforward to 1990 on ABU main campus, on the 14th february, students were having a valentine's gig in the sculpture garden of Fine Arts department, a group of muslim students came and disrupted their gig, took away their music appliances to ICSA/RAMAT mosque. Get your facts right first i can go on and on but Google the other reports and read them and stop casting wild aspersion on people that have nothing to do with violence in the area!

@Abdullah. "And lastly, what should "beggars believe that any human being with brain" is the fact that you hold up a man who walked on this earth, born of a woman, suffered persecution in the hands of men as your creator. Just imagine that!" I had enjoyed the various shades of opinions/arguments which symbolized the currency, interest and relevance of the issue, and particularly your (Abdullah's) zeal to defend your religious identity. You came across as one with considerable knowledge of the struggle of Islamists for global recognition and acceptance. A demonstration of cultural, moral and intellectual enlightenment midwifes avoidance of uncouth language, name calling, and polite expression of ones views. I think that criticisms levelled at certain principles or doctrines of a religion and conduct of its adherents are accepetable, as it could underscore the illiteracy of the critic on the one hand, or on the other hand imply a call for reinterpretation or reexamination of the understanding of the creed to meet with reality. I therefore consider objectionable, puerile, insensitive and irresponsible the above remarks about the central figure of the Christian religion made by you. It shows crass lack of tolerance and respect which epitomizes the the character and colour of the sectarian conflicts in the North of Nigeria. Such sentiments spurred the Miss World riots in the North of Nigeria, particularly in Kaduna where a journalist questioned the judgement of Northerners who opposed the country's hosting of the beauty peagent with a reference to your Holy Prophet. I respect everyone's right to hold both ethnic and religious identities. This is the priniciple among Yoruba's (I am not one) where families are commonly membered by both religions. Although one can say that religion is not their primordial identity like in the North. While illiteracy is a considerable factor in the frequency and magnitude of ethno-religious violence in the North, the more critical contributing factors are economics and politics. I also think that you may not properly appreciate the energy and rationale behind a particular action or experience until you empathize or simulate the experience or material condition of the actors or vitims which inform their conduct. Let the Christians (and Westerners) put themselves in the position of Muslims who perceive global conspiracy and hatred against them unhelped by association of global terrorism with Islam and Islamists. This also applies to Muslims who unfortunately and perceptibly seem intolerant of competing views, cultures and ideas. My understanding of various religions hinges, for the most part, on the objective fact that every religion encourages peace, tolerance, justice and charity. Our human interpretation and indoctrination incubabate the divisiveness. This is also a function of pursuit and maximization of self-advantage, relative gain. A food for thought is that the Alimighty God who all religion accepts as the foundation of the world and life, continues to make life-air, health, knowledge, children etc avilable to all humanity irrespective of belief (or Non-belief),values, culture and so on. On the issue of migration of Nigerians to perceived better climes for enhanced existence, it will remain a reality so long successive administrations in the country coutinue to unbundle welfare, obstracize good governance, show consistency in deepening the immiseration of the populace, reject popular sovereignty, and emasculate civil society. It is unfortunate that with the avalanche of educated, industrious, mobile and traditional record of nationalism, Nigerians abdicate the timely responsibility of enthroning change, even forcefully. The current impunitous regime and pliant and opportunistic elites cannot galvanize change as that would amount to class (and interest) suicide.

Throw the illegals out. Let them go fix their own countries instead of pillaging and destroying our countries. No one invited them in the first place. They are illegal and they broke the law. Thats it -time to round them up and ship them out. Period end of story.

Chiawolamoke. You demand respect and reference from me- a Muslim- for the "central figure of the Christian religion- Jesus Christ"? Give me a break! Islam is the ONLY non-Christian faith in the whole world that makes it an article of faith to believe and revere Jesus Christ (SAW). NO MUSLIM is a Muslim if he does not believe in and respect Jesus Christ (SAW). Not on the authority of the Bible- but on the authority of Muhammad (SAW). Shooting off with the long and tiring sermon where you characterized fair criticism as intolerance and disrespect really makes you come across as very boring. But that is not bad, in comparison to the likes of Phillips, Kayode, Danladi, et al all cowboy jokers who are unable to steer clear of blatant bigotry and crude hatred of Islam. These gunslingers should be laughed out of town. I wish to wrap up my postings in this thread with a famous quotation from one of the great Imams of Islam- although he gave the quotation in respect to debates with Islamic scholars like himself, I think it is still relevant to sho the type of spirit in debate that produces light rather than heat: Imam Shafi’i is related to have said: “Never do I debate a man with a desire to hear him err in his speech, or to expose the flaws in his argument, and thus vanquish him. Whenever I face an opponent in debate I silently supplicate, ‘O Lord, help him so that truth may manifest itself in his heart and on his tongue. If it be that the truth is on my side, may he follow me; and if the truth be on his side, may I follow him.’ “ When the Christians in Nigeria are ready for dialogue or debate in mutual respect and free of bigotry, to dialogue and debate 'difficult and inconvenient topics' not in a way that mischaracterizes Islam in a way that de-humanizes Muslims, you will find within our community willing partners. Muslims will refuse to allow the most outrageous untruths and distortions of our religion from individuals who have demons of religious hatred and intolerance (sadly a flourishing species in Nigeria) go unchallenged. And we are unapologetic about this.

Abdullahi must have all the time in the world to respond to every comment on this issue. If the internet were not a leveler, you wouldn't hide behind its anonymity to insult others. You can still defend your faith without pouring invectives or using acerbic words or threatening to kill. Those who are cultured and deeply religious exhibit these attributes even in anonymous forums like these.

Every one can see why muslims are the most hated people in the whole wide world, the like of this fool called Abdullahi, who cannot comment in intelligent and sensible way, without turning it into a war, but because you are a Nigerian, becoming a suicidal bomber is not an option, because you don't want to die, get a life and stop using the internet to pratice your level of education. If you are looking for a job, apply to become the new BOKO HARAM sect, am sure you will be accepted. This medium are for people who can discuss issues without hatred.

9/11 was a perfect excuse and the recent global recession also added more impetus to the growing level of discrimination against people of "darker skin", (and Islamophobia)in the whole of Europe. It is an alarming situation, its getting worse and the warning bells are beginning to ring....let those who have ears, let them listen! I pray the day will not arrive when "Darker skinned people and immigrants in general", will be forced to flee under physical persecution! Racism and Discrimination is very mush alive and like l am told, "its in the head" but in the "West", you are not allowed to talk about it or be seen practicing it, well, sort of! Having schooled in Europe, l have experienced it first hand, surprisingly even in an academic environment, from fellow students and lecturers! Like Obama said, "that we dont look same does not mean l am different...being different is not the same as being Evil/bad". Something tells me the "whites" are, generally speaking, very fearful, (in their arrogance), they can not live with the thought that "some darker people" are coming-of-age, and deserve to be equals"? Cant remember how many times l have tried to explain to some white folks why we are darker skinned (proximity to the sun's rays) and that its just skin-deep! Having said all these, the real culprits are "our leaders, those saddled with directing the affairs of African countries. Because of their corruption, that 10year old girl (one among millions!) is about to loose her life! Governance is not rocket science, if you can not move a country forward, why not just vacate the seat honorably and let those whom God have blessed with cranial ability, step-in, for the betterment of all? Greed and selfishness ruins our nation, pleading can not make "an oppressor" change his ways, like a thief, only the threat and (or) infliction of punishment, will make our kleptomaniac rulers step down. Remember, if you try to fight "corruption", corruption will fight back....and it has no "rules-of-engagement", it fights real dirty!

Contrary to what the article suggests, this case has nothing to do with immigration.....it is about asylum. This woman is claiming that she cannot go home because she is at risk of serious on return, arising from two specific issues. That is the basis of her claim. If the mother's claim is found to be true, they should be allowed to stay. If the claim is found to be untrue, the authorities need to decide how to handle the matter. I don't know anything about the merits of the asylum case, but I cannot abide this policy of detaining families. This category of migrants are the least likely to abscond. At the very least the State could opt for open facilities...there is simply no need to put a lock on the door....nor to terrify the living day lights out of the families by apprehending them (when they are living opening in addresses they have disclosed to the authorities), by way of dawn raids. They are detained because they are a soft target....and that is an inexcusable basis for a policy decision.

Europeans for Europeans. Arabia for Arabs. Nigeria for Nigerians. The mass-immigration of muslims to europe is a threat for european societys. The majority of this muslim immigrants are not needed, cause there aren´t educated enough to get a job in highly industrialized, progressive states. We don´t want that people here. The only thing for which they are famous here in europe is their massive convictions in brutal crime and their constant whining about "racism, islamophobia etc."if someone put the finger on the fact , that they are ,in their vast majority, absolutly useless for europe. Their dream is to transform europe into eurabia. And the autochton europeans should pay for that. The EU pay for the building of mosques, these temple of hate and apartheid. We are feed up with this shit.

Karsten, Germany, I could not agree more. Islam is a threat in particular and Europe ought to kick them out, period, before it is too late. Islam is poison to the west. Abdullahi is exactly the point, a liar, and that is the truth of islam. I say fight fire with fire, we fought against communism by capitalism and now we must look once again to our Christian heritage and know that it is a better and more noble heritage.

The middle east/Islamic nations is/are still in the "Dark Ages" which is why people from that region generally cannot integrate into western society, which passed through the age of enlightenment (where reason NOT mysticism prevailed and does still today) in the 18th century!!!
