Nigeria threatens to sever ties with America

Print print Email email Share Share

As controversy and anger continue to trail the listing of Nigeria as one of the 10 countries on the United States of America's top security watch list, the Senate has threatened to severe diplomatic relations with the country if by next week, it fails to remove Nigeria from the list of countries "of interest" for terrorism.

The Senate said this through its spokesperson, Ayogu Eze. He told National Assembly reporters on Tuesday in Abuja, "We are very unhappy about the development and when we resume, we are going to take this matter very seriously if America has not taken Nigeria's name off that list."

The U.S., through its Transport Security Administration (TSA), on Sunday announced the inclusion of Nigeria on the list of countries that are considered "of interest" (with regards to terrorism) based on its latest terrorism intelligence. Also included in the list with Nigeria are Afghanistan, Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, and Yemen.

Mr. Eze, who told reporters that he was talking on behalf of the Senate president, said, "For them (America) to embarrass the entire country with this type of classification without justification is totally unacceptable. The American president himself clearly admitted that this was a failure of system and the manpower of Americans. I don't see how Nigerians come in there and moreover this is just one instance of a Nigerian who it is clearly established had no links with any fundamentalist group or any interest group within Nigeria, not even with his own parents."

Failure of intelligence

He added, "This was a boy whose disappearance was reported to the security agencies, the American authorities and all the relevant authorities; and America did nothing. For them to turn round and punish Nigerians for the sin of an isolated case like this is very unacceptable to the Nigerian government and unacceptable to the Nigerian Senate."

He said the Senate has also watched with keen interest several other breaches that have taken place in the American system even before the alleged attempted terror attack by the Nigerian. He cited the issue of the uninvited guest who beat White House security to crash a party organised in honour of the Indian president. "That was not a Nigerian. Americans should look inwards and search their soul; something is wrong with their system and they should not punish ordinary Nigerians, who are very law-abiding and good international citizens for the failure and irresponsibility of American citizens. Nigeria will not take that."

A word for America

Mr. Eze offered an advice to the superpower, "We also want to advise America that it is in their own interest to ensure that they conduct this matter in a manner that will not result in a diplomatic row between America and Nigeria. It will be most unfair, given the kind of relationship that has existed between America and Nigeria for America to jump to this type of conclusion without even adequate consultation with all the authorities. This is not acceptable to us and we are going to do whatever we can as a nation to prove to America that we will not take this. This is not how diplomacy is conducted and we are going to engage all our diplomatic gears to ensure that we either have a relationship with America or we don't."

It has been widely reported that since the December 25 incident involving a Nigerian, many Nigerians have been subjected to dehumanising treatments and body searches by American security officials. This, Mr. Eze observed, "Must be stopped immediately. Do they think America is the only country that has citizens the country is responsible to?" he asked.

"We also have citizens and we are responsible for them and we will not wait and allow Nigerians to be molested wherever they go," Mr. Eze said.

The listing of Nigeria in the ‘countries of interest list' means, all NIgerian passengers as well as those whose flights originate from Nigeria will be subjected to full body and hand luggage searches. Analysts have also said foreign investors are likely to be wary of investing in the country as a result of the listing.

That just shows the kind of relationship we have with the US. Apparently, we're friends only because of Economic Gain for them. Otherwise they don't have any regard for us.

what a boastful self-inflicting wound nigeria is on the troes of committing. a suicide of no mean magnitude. if in doubt ask libya's moummar ghaddafi the vice hold america holds on the world including russia and china? lamentable the thought that instead of asking for forgiveness and apologising these buffoons at the senate are threateing a war they cannot even stand for a few hours. where is sadaam hussein? what have you people got except oil which america can source from somewhere else? don't you know america controls world bank, imf as well as international oil trading. do you think that britain and france can save you if america gest mad at you? www.icheoku.com says, may the mind that thought about this very stupid thing please retract and withdraw same; before nigeria irreparably damages itself. it is regrettable indeed that a country which does not even have a refining capacity is threatening a super power!

jones, i completely share your thoughts. Nigeria is not in a position to demand conditional action from the U.S. I don't think any country is.

foreign relations is within the purview of the executive arm of government and NOT the legislature...so these empty minds are just making noise...where is their president?

ayogu eze or whatever his name is have over-shot the runway by his utterance. a currently wounded america is the wrong country for anyone, especially a lilliput nigeria to mess with. how dare this scum-bag open his mouth to say such a sacrilege when his country's president umaru yar'adua is a saudi arabia's hospital built and run by americans? does he not know that it will only take a phone call to get umaru yar'adua removed from his hospital bed and sent to die in nigeria? was this guy smoking something or what? how can a very tiny nza-bird be threatening and challenging its god to a fight? please jonathan goodluck, david mark and oladimeji bankole hurry up and do damage control before the republican hawks forces president barack obama to take nigeria up on her offer. what are these bandits at the senate smoking or else how can a sane man open his loud mouth this wide concerning the affairs of america and at this tensed time? terrorism in Nigeria has been in existence in forms of religious riots except that umar farouk abdul mutallab only took it international and unfortunately messed with the wrong guy. Nigeria should be apologising on all their fours as america does not need their oil to survive. but when you mess with the world's only remaining super power which controls all levers of world economy, war, banking and finance, security, commerce, energy, transport then you definitely bit more than your mouth can chew. the check is more than nigeria's arse can cash. PLEASE!PLEASE! PLEASE, NIGERIA go down on your knees immediately and pray that republicans will not force the president's hand to visit Nigeria with the most damning sanctions and possibily send in the marines for not only attempting to blow up their plane but also for being very unrepentant and unapologetic about the criminal act of one of their own; with the now threatened severance of diplomatic ties. Ojo Maduekwe are you still in office or has the absent yar'daua complicated matters the more? www.icheoku.com says that the mouth that spit this evil deserves to be placed on 'no-fly' list to anywhere in the world so that he can remain in is nigeria and run his mouth.

At this point in time, it is important that all facets (legislative, judiciary and executive) and tiers (local, state and federal) of the Nigerian government express (by every lawful means possible) absolute displeasure about the inclusion of the country in this stupidly designed list. ALL Nigerians should back their country in this regard. After this, we should begin to look inward, redefine ourselves and our way of thinking and start treading on the rough road toward self-development. Nigeria has the potential to emerge as a world power in the near future only if Nigerians are willing to set aside corruption and selfish interests and put the development of their well-endowed nation first, above all else. With God, we will become the pride and envy of the world.

Posted by CountryMan on Jan 06 2010

@tony aburime...i cannot support a country like nigeria, corruption and selfish interests would not stop and most importantly god is not going to make you a pride of the world...this is a matter for the executive arm of government to deal with...every other person could comment but THREATS are totally unhelpful... america would stop all of THEM from visiting their houses bought with stolen money...how is that for a start?

That the world now recognise nigeria as a potential terrorist threat is something long overdue. The USA didn't put nigeria into the list just because of the lone christmas bomber incident but because of the long standing islamic extremist activities that have been happening within nigeria. The christmas bomber incident merely tipped the scale. Typical nigeria, we are always in denial. We deny the existence of any problem and leave it to fetter and get worse. No wonder our country have been going from bad to worse. There have been more than 25 well documented islamic genocide against southern christians in northern nigeria. In each of them thousands of innocent southerners are killed just because they are from the south or because they are christians. It is a fact that in northern nigeria there are tens of thousands of muslims who are ready to kill people of other faith hence i was not surprise about this christmas bomber at all. In the northern nigeria, Bin Laden is seen as a hero. His posters are in buses. So why are we surprise that some people there will like to do exactly what Bin Laden did? We lie through our teeth when some of us say terrorism is unnigerian. Terrorism has been going on in nigeria for decades and hundreds of thousands of innocent southerners that have lost their lives. There is a saying that if a man knows his problems, he has already solved 50% of it. But in nigeria we do not even acknoledge that we have a problem hence the problem just continue to get worse. We nigeria should wake up and start smelling the coffee. What if these terrorist among us start attacking our internal flights within nigeria? Are we prepared for that? We all must acknowledge the great problem before us. Its not an Ameriacan or western world problem. Its our problem and the threat is pointing directly towards us.

Mr Ayogu Eze, should go and hide his head in shame. Do they think that they can cut off diplomatic relations with they USA. Its like a child who is still in the kindergaton denying his parents. They should be thinking of how to take care of things back home or else i should not have been abroad for the past 8 years facing out right discrimation from other Nationals while i came from a country called Nigeria where nothings works because of this same shameless people called Nigerian leaders. Where is the president?

Posted by Bunmi on Jan 06 2010

@Tony and other Nigerians who think like you, here are some facts to chew on: (1) the Mutallab silver-spoon kid is Nigerian of northern descent; (2) he tried to blow up a plane with explosives - so he is a suicide bomber; (3) he is not denying links to Al-Quaeda; (4) America has the duty to protect her people, unlike Nigeria which doesnt; (5) Nigeria is not in anyway fit to challenge South Africa or even Ghana, not to talk of the US;(6) a headless, corrupt, poverty stricken, poorly governed nation such as Nigeria is incapable of asserting itself in the world. We are a nation to watch for terrorism, whether you like it or not. - kala kato, boko haram, maitasine, jos upheavals, Kano riots, etc - do they ring bells?

It is shameful, that some brigands who rigged their way into powers and call themselves elected representatives, would wake up from their inactivities and corrupt ridden gathering and threaten America, a dear Nation, the peace maker of the world, a country that can go to war over one of her citizen.where were these people when sautherners were being slaughtered in the north in the same country through religious riots? where are these same people when the likes of Abdulmutalab goes about with their fanatical ideas? where were these people when our leaders who corruptly forced their way into positions of authority, decided to trade Nigeria away by secretly including Nigeria as member of The organization of Islamic Countries under millitary junta? Where were these people when the north decided to adopt sharia in in circular country like Nigeria? Those select few should apologise to USA for the wrong doing of one of their citizins carrying a nigerian passport. there is no such case as isolated case, afteral it involves lives of so many nationals, who could have died if a nigerian in the name of Islam has succeeded in his unguided mission.those educated illitrates should discuss the way forward to avert sanction of any kind, because nigerians have had to pay for the sins of ingnorant leaders and their god fathers.

I have no problem with how the USA classified Nigeria as long as they also put Britain on that list, afterall almost all the terrorist have some kind of association to Britain plus there have been more British terrorist, Richard Reid(not a Nigerian) than Nigerians. The fact that Britain is not on it tells me it has nothing to do with security it probably is the same reason why they have no problem with an open border with Canada while there is a huge fence between Mexico and USA. The truth is, you will know your true Friend in time of Needs.

I dare Nigeria to severe relations with its biggest trading partners. Our public officers don't have what it takes. Terrorism has been with us, it just crystallized on Christmas day. What about the legion of Religious riots that has occurred in the past? In diplomatic parlance, action and reaction should be equal at opposite. Mr Eze decayed utterance is all hot air. Have they sorted the Minister of Foreign Affairs who spent billions to buy akara?

Posted by US_Yankee on Jan 06 2010

Why are you people complaining? "diplomatic gears", you don't even have a President and you talk of diplomatic gears.

Posted by KAY on Jan 06 2010

It is most embarrassing that Senate spokesman was not well tutored on talking on matters that are sensitive. I guess he feels he is talking down on ASUU, or NANS, or independent marketers or perhaps Tanker drivers. How come the killings in Bauchi under our nose. With a slight provocation Boko Haran pulled some stunts, do you know which group is next. He thinks America is like his(Eze) Senate that is insensitive. This inclusion is the best for us at least it will get us thinking. At least get the Senators to sit up and legislate instead of Carrying Ghana must go. My sympathy goes to well meaning Nigerians doing legitimate biz and journeys that this will put through untold harassment.

Posted by Fredrick on Jan 06 2010

Look at who is talking of system failure, what happen to the nigeria system? Jones, i completely agree with your thought. Nigerians should device an amiable means to prove to America as a couintry that they are not what they think instead of inviting troble with their lips. Why would they not call for war, when their wives and children are in other safe developed countries like USA.God is in control.

Posted by Ant Hills on Jan 06 2010

Mr. Jones or whatever he calls himself should know that even if America is the superpower, we are not going to stand by their bullshit. We did it to Kissinger in 1976 and we shall do it again. F..k America. God did not create America to rule the world. If they are the greatest country in the world, how did a small rat tickle them so badly they lost their cool. Nigeria may be a sick nation by all means, but we are God's children as well and the Almighty will not allow them to get away with everything, in Jesus name, Amen,

Useless country, you are rich in oil yet the average Nigerian as to wait in line to buy fuel. This article is just laughable and a huge embarassment. In fact US will say woe betide you Nigeria if you don't sever ties with America

The statements credited to Ayogu Eze were prompted by patrotic zeal and nothing more. what Abdulmutalab attemted was a very isolated incident, if it has been happening we could say dont blame US. To put Nigeria in the same group as Pakistan is disgusting to say the least. If your child offends a neighbour, a very powerful and influential one for that matter for instance, you dont go there and do 'gra gra', you should be apologising or it'll be assumed you sent him. The fact that Abdulmutalab snr even reported his child to US authorities was sufficient to absolve Nigeria. If you are in a disadvantaged position, there are things you must endure whether you like it or not. Information and foreign affairs ministers should please stylishly retract that Ayogu vituperation. Since biblical David humbled Goliath, such a feat has not been repeated in modern times, there are nations Naija can face eye ball to eye ball, the US is certainly not in that category.

Telling the truth has never been easy for us Nigerians. I guess the world is tired of being fed by 'our' lies. This boy grew up in a culture(Kaduna Nigeria) where it was righteous to kill people who were pegans, as they choose to call us. If the father was indeed a good man, which he possibly is, he should have started earlier. It's not one attitude for helpless Nigerians and another for the World(America). From 1965 Nigeria till today, these good men in northern Nigeria like Farouk's father still condone state wide massacre of non-muslim Nigerians. Nigeria as a state should have been an opportunity to teach love and tolerance, but we all know it's not so till today. We have done it in words but not enough in action. No matter where the boy is radicalized, fact is that there were students from other countries who live in the UK who refuse these kinds of temptations. What can we say about the poll that dragged a high percentage of Nigerian interviewed that they see nothing wrong in suicide bombing as a way of addressing their grievances against the west? We must understand that there is no country called Southern Nigeria, or Northern Nigeria. The boy Farouk has put a maggot on our rotten pie. Please once again, lets clean our house in the hope that the world will treat us better. Let us dress up as we wish to be addressed.

Posted by Ahmed on Jan 06 2010

I disagree with most of the contributors. Why should Nigeria apologize for this, afterall this guy was more western than Nigerian, moreover he was inducted into fundamentalizm in the UK and Yemen. Why are the so called terrorist only targeting America? How many innocent lives do America kill everyday? I believe the Americans should search their conscience and foreing policies. Nigeria has nothing to do with this, and I would be very disappointed if Nigeria apologize for this.

I cannot even believe that those who commented above are Nigerians. Zimbabwe with Mugabe at the reins continues to defy the UN and the US. Castro did the same with Cuba so why not? If we so want to depend on a superpower, Russia is there. Must we sit back perpetually and watch Nigeria's image shredded by the day and do nothing? If you ask me, the Senate must have rolled on its side for them to even think about challenging the Yankees. As unusual as that is' it is Nigeria's first step in the journey to absolute independence. Whoever thinks it is the sole prerogative of the executive to decide in matters like this should go kiss an American butt. Pardon my French but it would also mean asking Aunty Dora to shut up until Yar'adua returns home, fit as a fiddle. This is our war and the earlier we begin sending our troops to the heat of battle, the better for us. It will not be easy but whoever died trying? Whosai dog no fit learn how to chop shit,eh?

For those who said no one can challenge America, think again. China has done it many times. Last I can recall is when America put a ban on buying certain Chinese goods last year because their local industry was suffering from the proliferation of cheaper Chinese goods. The Chinese responded by asking that all factories in China producing goods for American companies be shutdown. America had to go back to China with a hat in the hand before China agreed to allow the factories run again and of course the Chinese goods were allowed to sell in America. My point is that, we are unable to flex any diplomatic muscle because we haven't got any. When these men sit down and think, they will realize that their years of looting et al has left Nigeria in a position where it cannot effectively hold the kind of sway they have disillusioned themselves to think they can. I do not support America's action, but that's exactly the way of the world: the strong set and interprete the rules as they deem fit. Get strong Nigeria before making this kind of noise, that's what we can learn from the Asian

This matter is what can be mutually resolved if our president could visit the White Houseand make the position of Nigeria known to Obama and not through a bunch of jokers that call themselves the honorables.

@ JUST MY THOUGHT, I completely agree with you. Unfortunately, the Obama administration has capitulated to the obtuse racism of right-wing bloggers who had flooded the Internet with racist vitriol about the need to profile and exclude people of certain regions and religions. While I personally believe it both impolitic and ill-advise to start threatening a severance (or even a downgrading) of diplomatic relations, maybe this is the time to accord more serious consideration to diversifying our economic risk and allowing China to buy into those oil licenses and acreages that they have been desperately seeking in Nigeria.

Posted by Ehidiamen on Jan 06 2010

This just show the calibre of illitrates we have ruling Nigeria. Even a child knows that America rules the world for now. Mighty China cannot do without ties with America much less Nigeria that cannot even refine the oil they we have. What exactly can Nigerians do by ourselves? My heart bleeds terribly. As an unrepentant lover of Nigeria, at the stupidity of the utterances of Ayogu Eze (I certainly expected better of him)...that is no way to answer the admittedly unfair US action but also at the annoying comments on this forum that suggest that just because our leaders are demented and the US is strong makes it right to kick us whenever they choose! I reject both assertions vehemently. Indeed our leaders should do better by us and where they like obviously Senator Eze have nothing to say, should kindly keep their traps shut. On the other hand, no nation for any reason is justified to treat another the way we were...that is the premise of international law and the foundation of our civilization. To bring the lamentable events in our contemporary history is simply to becloud the issue..America can defend her citizens..indeed true..what has Boko Haram got to do with that? It all reminds me of high school where it was fashionable to act as if one was an unserious student and nerds were teased. The tragedy today is that elites like us who have enough stateprovided education to get on the net think the hippy thing to do is naija bash...which is indeed your prerogative but wait till countries where you are hiding start picking you out...there is no hiding place for the gold fish. God save us from our leaders and ourselves!

You people who think you know... you hide out there in the USA and Europe, you dont know that you are teleguided by those who believe in the Hamitic Hypothesis - that the black man is meant (or created) to be slaves to other races. You promote those countries that have captured you, and deride your own. You say Nigeria is a bastard nation. I pity you all... They said we are glorified monkeys, and we are not acting any different. The problem has shifted from government to WE ourselves. We have serious mindset issues. If we were wise, we would UNITE! It is so unfortunate that some of the comments here fail to grasp that the US measure is actually NOT directed at the Nigerian govt, but rather at NIGERIANS! Hopefully, some day these folks will come to fully understand that distinction. In the meantime, the US will continue to buy significant portions of its oil and gas needs from the Nigerian govt (not Nigerians, whom the US frankly cares so little about).

There is no greater lie than that which says Nigeria has lost its relevance to the world. That is what the extremist rednecks want you to believe. And so called intellectuals and professors lapped up that tripe... I know that if half of Nigerians in diaspora returned home, many economies will collapse in the western world. Even if we boycott travelling to these countries for two weeks, many of their airlines will collapse. They are playing on our intelligence... Who introduced the corruption virus into Africa, then used this 'divide and rule' tactics to fan the embers and make the corruption spread like wildfire? The white man - not really the normal white people, most of whom are okay, but their strategists and intelligentsia. They have used the Farouk incidence to throw Nigeria under the bus. But the black Man shall be redeemed and saved from lifelong opprobrium and slavery. And Nigeria will achieve this. No matter what. All you naysayers, better join the movement... Now or never

Cuba looks like a prehistoric country with American cars from the 60's and people living mostly on poverty level, many young women make money from prostitution, yet Cuba is only a swim away from Miami, and Zimbabwe is following the same part, look at what Mugabe has done to their economy, many of the white farmers are now in Kwara state, and land is being distributed to his friends and family. I don't think Nigeria can survive any UN sanctions or US Embargo's for six months.

China has put in an offer for out reserves. my suggestion is that they don't stop there, they should shut- out Shell, Chevron etc from the re-negotiation of the oil blocks and give them over to China. in 40+ of America's involvement, all we have is pollution. let them go and get their oil from Iran, Venezuela, Iraq (where they've been shut out as well) and continue their relationship with the Saudis. i am tired of this imperialist behaviour. they out us on the same level as countries that have decades worth of extremism. their intelligence failed, now they blame us. America is a joke. the British knew about Umar and didn't renew his visa. if you put a giant meteor in front of CIA headquarters, those fools wouldn't find it.

Dear Toni Aburime - Nigeria, world power? How???! Why do we ALWAYS just think we can shove all our wishes at God, fold our arms and do nothing else and then expect excellent results? Majority of our leaders are not only inept but are selfish and propelled by a very rare but highly venomous greed. In Nigeria, a project that should cost N10m is awarded at N50m and the contractor will eventually do a shoddy job worth N5m or less! Pray, who is our ambassador to the United States? Why has he just gone quiet? Why do we only hear from him when Nduka is organizing musical concerts on American soil? Where is our President? Do we even still have a President? What is the official position of Nigeria on this issue? If there is one, is it being communicated in a coordinated and consistent manner? I dare say the only impressive response to this issue has come from the bomber's father. Aunty Dora says "it is unfair"; this clown Eze (a whole spokesperson for the Nigerian Senate!) blatantly dares and threatens America; our IG who should know better says "it is evident" (while investigation is still going on) that Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab's radical tendencies was influenced from abroad forgetting that part of his formative years was enmeshed in the various religious riots of the north. One feels so sorry for our dear nation even from the quality of these clumsy comments particularly as it emits from people in position of authority. If our leaders were truly patriotic and got things working in Nigeria, the exodus to America and the West will obviously be a non-issue and it is only then that spokesman Eze should have the effrontery to ask Barak to go jump into a shallow well. A total overhaul of our leaders, our way of thinking and our approach to nation building is absolutely essential and we should focus on that rather than bare our impoverished war chest with America.

Nigerians spend $50million of their own money travelling to Jerusalem every year. Our muslims spend over $600million of their own money travelling to Mecca, while the Saudi King eats from America's palms. Why arent we getting people to come over here. The little we get from the world, we send it right back to them, plus much more extra. Is that not stupidity? WHO STOLE AFRICAN MINDS? HOW CAN WE FIND OUR MINDS BACK? Rwanda learnt from their Civil War and have formed a popular song seeking for unity and condemining the white man's divisive role. But we are still stoking divisions here. Lugard and Milverton wrote books calling us black people monkeys, and we do not see that we have to cooperate. This development is good for us, now we can face our own problems at home. Nigeria shall be free... As if they havent done us enough harm already. USA is on the way down. No civilisation lasts forever, and what kills civilisations is what they know how to do best, or what made them rise in the first place... SUBTERFUGE, THE CIA, CLANDESTINE INTELLIGENCE, AND FOSTERING PROBLEMS IN OTHER COUNTRIES, ARMS AND AMMUNITION, which made USA rise in the first place, and which is their mainstay, is what will also destroy that country. And they know...

No wonder Nigeria can be treated anyhow since the citizens’ talk about their Nation in such condescending manner. What happened to true patriotism, togetherness? What people don't know is if America decides to stop trading with Nigeria, there are more than enough countries waiting to grab the opportunity. As someone rightly said China, they are soon to be become the world's largest economy. Don't forget power can change hands. China has walked out on America and the UK on a number of occasions. At the recent climate summit, the Chinese president clearly stood his ground. The meeting stalled and no concrete decision was made. The Chinese ambassador to the UK clearly refused to listen to the UK petition to stop the execution of the UK citizen held for drug offenses. Do you think Russia is sleeping? I am totally in support of diplomacy and I do not condone terrorism. However, terrorism comes in different forms. US President Barrack Obama said yesterday, this boy could have been stopped. Is this negligence of the almighty US intelligence and security forces? Nigerians are clearly angry about this list; however her leaders should approach the matter carefully. What we want is true result and not just talks; this can only be achieved in a civil way and not throwing around words. Nigeria is going places, and Nigeria will win! Please stop running down the nation with your words. Be positive and together for once! Other countries have ethnic and religious issues too. There are still troubles in Northern Ireland. Irish and English are not best friends, Scotland and England fought wars. Every great nation has gone through it’s tough times.

Nobody thinks Nigeria will win a war against US, but we can win an economic one against them. America loves naysaying our country. They said we would soon be a failed state because we did not let them move their military base Africom from Germany to Nigeria. They need our oil, and they need us to use the money we get from selling our oil to them to import their products. I say we cut off ties, the Chinese and Russians would make sweet love to us for it. ANd nobody else would try it again. I know what the former US ambassador Princeton Lyman said last month at the Achebe colloquium http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=NqMXoA1jfDs&feature=player_embedded but the fact is in the near term America's economic recovery cannot suffer a hike in oil prices which can happen if our financial leaders in Nigeria, Sanusi et al. think of a way to drive up oil prices, such as by stopping all companies that export to US. THEY MUST APOLOGIZE. MUTALLAB IS A ROGUE EXILE, not a Nigerian.

Do all these actions not constitute a void in out leadership.People criticized Obasanjo for travelling too much success in the international community is the result of hours of networking.America is only reacting to an obvious leadership void and is already working on chaos scenarios in case our country falls apart.Oga Yar'Adua abeg resign now....abeg....

Nigerians, please, wake up and smell the coffee. In the grand scheme of things, Nigeria and Nigerians think they are of relevance to the world and America. Actually you are not. Angola has overtaken Nigeria as Africa's top oil producer and the cost of doing business in Nigeria is no longer worth it to anyone. The country and its leaders are corrupt, fraudulent, arrogant and ignorant. Nigeria has nothing to offer anymore and there are better countries out there to trade with. The influx of foreigners into Nigeria is because it is an easy country to steal from, to make money from not because its fantastic. Most foreigners here think Nigerians are idiots and they love it here because they can do what they want, make money, steal and still be worshipped. Even here in your own country what does Nigeria own. Most industrialists are all foreign owned. The exception being Dangote. What does Nigeria manufacture? We have a long way to go as a country and until then Nigeria will remain on the terror list. Mark my words.

Diplomacy involves shouting before they strike you. After the incident, Nigerian delegates should have immediately flown to US to engage in activities that can help us redress our image. Here we are talking about very meaningful negotiation by sound and very well learned diplomats. Nigeria did not make any aggressive move to resolve this in time. Albeit, I still maintain, it is very wrong and quite unjust to be included and I join views with the senator on making move to ensure we are de-listed. Little do few Nigerians realize how much we are much needed around the world - because we are everywhere. If we do not act swiftly (it will take months if we are very forcy), Nigerians will be dehumanized by all nations of the world. We are blacks, unlike the other countries on the list. Somehow we manage not to be in anyway close to united, and that gives every country the room to tear us apart. You may not be surprised if you are told to strip down and some sticks a finger into your anus all in the name of strip searching. This is diplomacy and it involves quick defence. Stop being against the Senate/House of Assembly or any meaningful Nigerian asking for immediate exclusion. Rather join and bit part of a crusade to at least redeem one thing - YOUR OWN FACE, WE ARE NIGERIANS AND NOT TERRORISTS.

Posted by Ebube on Jan 06 2010

Simply fix the country (create jobs, food security, enhance security and build infrastructures - physical and social Mr Senator) and we would have little need to travel to the US IF NOT, keep stomped. The US will treat us however they wish as long as they see the government neglecting its citizens.

Read the Financial Times of yesterday Brazil, India, Russia, China and even Saudi Arabia showed America that it is not all about them. Mind you I will say all the religious crisis in the country have not always been religious rather a colouration of religion becos they are ethnic based. People should learn to respect themselves to earn respect.. in the same token respect ur country to earn the respect u deserve..

Well said, Nigerian senate. It may look stupid for a dwarf like Nigeria fight a giant like America but the obvious must be stated. If you have a systemic defect, why not look internal and solve your problem instead of unnecessarily scandalising a country that already has a dented image. An alert was sounded, the name of terrorist supplied by no other person than the father and US could not do simple intelligence monitoring of the boy until he was about to wreck havoc. Americans should be thanking their God that the bomb did not explode as that would have been one criminal negligence too many. Was a Nigerian that scaled through impregnable American security to attend an Obama party? Those couple would have blown Obama head, if they wanted and nothing has been heard of the incident? It has been swept under the carpet. Let Americans revert to the bible and note that if God does not guide a city, in vain do watch men stay awake to keep watch. Nigerians should be left alone; we have suffered enough hardship and humiliations in the hands of the international community in name of sojourn in their land. Nigerians know their problems, corruption and leadership and followership ineptitude.

How about the killings during elections and kidnapping activities? All these are not unknown to America. Nnow that the dastardly acts have been taken international, America should worry. Nigeria should be sober rather than trading blames and threatening. The uterances of the senate will only make the traveling Nigerians suffer more harassments. Maybe the Senators think they can find alternatives in Dubai. Who controls Dubai? Is it not this same America. I had expected our Senators to be wiser than this and apply diplomacy

I can't wait for next week. Bloody nitwits. We weren't blacklisted because of Umar. That was the culmination. We were blacklisted cos our govt can't provide security for anyone but themselves. It is a swipe at those people who forced themselves on us so they could steal money. Our govt does nothing when rich people up north sponsor riots to kill non-moslems. A related set down south, pays and arm young men to kill and terrorise people so they can steal oil. Another one, does same for political gains. Ammo depot went up in flames and killed hundreds, no one was punished. If this isn't terrorism, then what is? We ordinary people suffer cos some rich people shaft us, so they'll remain rich. Ethnicity doesn't matter here. It's all for the same interest, money. That's what keeps them together. Where were they when Grace was killed in Maiduguri? Where were they when Boko Haram went on rampage. A human life is worth nothing in this country. Policemen kill people just because they have a gun and nothing happens. Senior military officers sells arms from the amoury and nothing is done. Steal soldiers' money and got scot free. While the protesting soldiers are punished. One good thing will come out of this, they won't be able to move stolen money to the States as before. The American govt has a right to protect its citizens. Our govt doesn't see the need to do so. We, other Nigerians, are worthless to them. And that is the reason we have been blacklisted.

Posted by Deocano on Jan 06 2010

For them (America) to embarrass the entire country with this type of classification without justification is totally unacceptable. The American president himself clearly admitted that this was a failure of system and the manpower of Americans. I don't see how Nigerians come in there and moreover this is just one instance of a Nigerian who it is clearly established had no links with any fundamentalist group or any interest group within Nigeria, not even with his own parents." A good statement from eze.The bomb carrier to me was never a Nigerian cos out of his 23yrs on earth, more than half was spent outside the country. Dear Fellow Contributors, Let's put our emotions and sentiments about our government officials aside. Lets treat each issue differently. We are talking about the image of a nation which affects you whether you like it or not. America cannot list Nigeria to be a terrorist nation because of one single act of terrorism by a Nigerian ( who is even more western than he is a Nigerian). This is why i'll say Sen. AYOGU EZE, WELL DONE. I believe you guys are aware of citizens of other nations that have been involved in terrorist attacks that did not make the list. Now, even as much as i feel the US is reacting EMOTIONALLY on the issue, the Nigerian government contributeed to it. We have left the issue of not having a FUNCTIONING president........ to me, i think it is even worse than a terrorist attack. My advise is that we should consistently criticise our leaders and politicians, but should resist any attempt by any nation (be it the US) to trample on our sovereinty and dehumanise our people. For those of you who think this dehumanising treatment is for only government officials and politicians, please begin to have a rethink because those guys always have special clearance wherever they go........ and i still believe they will have that clearance if they go to the US today. It is the ordinary Nigerian like you and I that will undergo this inhuman treatment.

People can say what they want to say and rain all the toothless bull dog write ups, the truth remains that America uses its current position in the world to intimidate, bully, terrorize and victimize small nations. We have had a lot of known British, Americans, e.c.t that have been caught and killed for several terrorist acts, but why have America not named Britain and co terrorist nations??? Let’s face it and stop been sarcastic whenever it comes to America, like people trying to pay lip service to wrong doings. Of course I love America, but am a Nigerian and my unending love goes for my nation. We have our issues, many of them, but we are dealing with them gradually. And if we have the support of other well meaning Nigerians, our nation will definitely change from bad to good and for the better to eventually be the BEST! We honestly don't deserve to be on the watch list where our citizens are now been subjected to inhumane searches and treatments in international airport. God Bless you All.

You Nigerians are very funny people o. IF our Government officials keep quite and keep saying "It is not fair", you people will say 'Is that all they have to say, cant they cut off ties and sanction America? Are we not a Nation of our own?'. When the Government officials now talk tough (as they should), our people now run and hide behind, and say 'be careful o, I no send you o'. Typical of Nigerians. Mr. Eze and Senate: I support you by God's grace and Prayers - whether we have President or Not - someone should stand for us. Only ensure you don't compromise. I personally will not allow any idiot to insult me or my Country (NO MATTER How bad they say we are). America must learn to start showing us some respect; and it is never too late to put our feet down and stop being slaves. I still believe there is GOOD in all that is happening since Dec 25th. God Bless MY Dear Nigeria.

And I still believe that Nigeria will succede diplomaticaly and can survive without US, though hoping that US will not like to loose NIGERIA to China or Russia

This is probably the precise kind of turmoil Nigeria needs to incite it to action, and to unite it under one cause (similar to the BA deportation debacle). Terrorism has long lived internally. If Nigerian leaders can truly follow through with living separately from America, Nigeria just might begin to see the gaping holes it needs to fill for its own self-sufficiency. A spider can fight with an elephant, if you have not heard the tales of Anansi, go read. It is high time! Many attempts have been made to stick Terrorism to Africa. Now it has been done successfully. Nigerians the perceived worst of the lot have been portrayed in many movies, media forms, etc, Tears of the Sun, District 9. What major protests arose from these? Those who have been able to hide within the freedoms of movement into other nations with smoother roads, and available power, now let us see how they respond with those freedoms severely curtailed. If Nigerians have no choice, will they make the most of the country they have? Will they build a nation that the One could call his own? See Indonesians supplying the world with over half its producing raw material from the very palm kernel Nigerians gave them. Read Ecclesiastes 9 and gain wisdom for these times. After all is said and done, what will you have left? Treasures in Nigeria only...or beyond? Yaradua, Eze and other Nigerian Leaders will unwittingly bring Nigeria to the very place it needs to be. Are you ready?

Please see the December 2009 article by Princeton Lyman - "If Nigeria Fails". Nigerian Government has a blotted impression of Nigeria's relevance. As the article reads and as we all should know by now, Nigeria had a semblance of relevance in Africa and indeed the world, but that was once upon a time.

A few people have contributed excellently to this debate. Please what do we benefit from America. All those supporting them please name what we have gained from them. We have gained exploitation. Period. China is ready to buy our oil and for a better price to. I beg cancel all the exploitative licences we have with this thief thief countries and give them to China. An exploitative country that as already predicted our collapse cannot be our friend. What do you think they have kept war vessels at the gulf of guinea for? To invade Nigeria at the slightest opportunity. We must not allow them. Remember, Iraq is not better for it. Infact, Iraq was a lot better under the evil Saddam Hussein. We might agree that our leaders are uncaring and corrupt, but believe me America & other western countries are not after our interest. They are simply after what they can gain from us. More Exploitation.

I am forced to conclude that a lot of contributors who feel America is a "superpower" therefore cannot be punched or punished are extremely weak, small minded or ignorant. Does it occur to anyone that America has not won a single war since World War II. Yes we all agree that the country has a large military muscle but heavily indebted. Since that last financial crises America has weakened even further. Culturally it projects power through a lot of grandstanding, propaganda and arts - which is mostly dominated by African Americans anyways. When you consider that 3.6 in every 10 African Americans has Nigerian ancestry - why bother? I am not suggesting to slap America in the face but a calm measured response which must hurt their ailing economy is called for. Naturally, the effects on ours should be minimal. China and America currently vie for influence in Africa we should back China more collaborate with China more in furthering OUR intrests. I hope the senators make good on their threats but calmly and wisely. Nigeria is not a poor country nor are we a banana republic. We are far from perfect, youth employment is especially a problem and mr. president is probably comatose but we must all stand united and watch for each other. You may complain all you want thats your right but remember only weak and hapless people do that. That fact that i am having a quarrel with my wife is no ground for a stranger to insult her.

Let me ask you these questions? 3 days after terror attack on the plane,Bauchi terrorists unleashed terror on people and killed seventy officially recorded deaths-is this not worse than terror? what did senate say about this? Nigeria has been terrorised all the years-there is no year that extremists had not formented one form of death or the other in Nigeria. Thank God for this exposure. If you sever your ties with America you loose.America gave support to ordinary nigerians more than our government give us. be ready also I mean senator Eze to withdraw his children from America schools. Dont deceive yourselves we need to address terrorism within and eliminate it.Yes Nigeria name should remain in the terrors list as far as people are killed with impunity in Nigeria. Stop making a noise about d situation of d country; address d issue b4 u! ...and how does Nigeria deserve to be on that list? abd mutallab wasnt bred in Nigeria. Highly decernable from the action and response of the two nations that two wrongs cannot make a right. All comments so far suggests even so and I think both parties need some adhoc re-education and re-skilling on diplomatic engagement to enable proper diplomatic hadling of a top sensitive international issue. Convinced something good will come out this hot air eventually. Nigeria is not been lucky in the last six weeks and we should pray and hope for God's kind intervention for the sake of the voiceless masses.

It is not america's duty to symphatize woth our failings, it is our duty to see ourselves for what we are, note our shortcomings and correct them. do not forget that all sorts of dire predictions about Nigeria's demise has been emanating from america for sometime, what is happening now is just in line with that pattern of events as set by america. the outcome, which lies in the womb of time, lies in our hands and not in america's hands. when Chairman Mao of China launched his revolution in China, America was a wold power then, it did not bless the movement, rather it supported Chiang Kai Shek with all its might. it continued to fight Communist China and to give it all sorts of labels and to threaten the chinese State, but a focused commusnist china, despite serious setbacks, has now earned respect from america and the west without having to fight a war with her. The americans, like most nations of the world, have seen Nigeria or percieve her to be conducting its affairs in a manner that is mind boggling by the level of irresponsility and unseriousness been displayed by its leadership both within and oustide its governing elite. those who govern are relentless in their detrmination to squander every good thing about the nation. They steal, lie, kill and do not care about the good of the nation or its people. those elite who are not in government enjoy pontifications about this ill and that ill so that they may be noticed and then they too will come aboard the government train to loot, lie and kill. The poor and or the disinherited, rather than organise and do a Mao Tse Tung revolution, run to the western press to scream and shout and then come back home feling self satisfied having been feted and mocked by the elites of the Westenrn World. Their shame already exposed and documented. What is there for america to respect in nigeira? the fact that all those who rule hide their loot in banks controlled by the CIA? Or is it those who buy mansions in american cities and send their children to school in american owned institutions, whose secrets are well documented in western capitals? Even the nigerian people do not deserve any respect or symphathy since they have condoned been serially raped and humiliated by the same rulers who are the laughing stock of the western world and even african nations. We may abuse america and we may castigate ayaogu eze, but the truth is that from now on our relationship with america will continue to go downhill while america searches through for countries that fits into its own plan for continued world domination in an increasingly competitive and fractious world. To all intents and purposes, Nigeria, in terms of achievements as a nation, is not only a failure but a serious basket case. it is like the man who has a an infectious and terminal illness/disease but insists on acting as if he does not require any medical tereatment, his wise neighbours who intend to survive must neccessarily distance themselves from him. if Nigeria were to be to the son of a Yoruba of Ibo father and at 49 years old he has not settled down with a definite purpose and responsibilty in life, but insists on living in a world of make believe and still wait for others to tell him the truth about himself, his father wiill ask the mother where she got the pregnancy from, the man will be labelled unserious and that he cannot be trusted with responsibility. Do not blame america, they plan ahead, the purpose of their action does not lie in the immediate. it is we that have no future national plans, but only live to loot our resouces and ruin the nation that are now overreacting with emotion. Respect is not given, it is earned. For the discerning, after King David of ancinet Isreal had thoroughly built the wealth of Isreal and defeated the enemies of Isreal round about, he died and no nation dared attack Isreal for forty years after his death; that is earned respect, when his descendants squandered that respect with reckless living, they went into slavery, that is earned disrespect. it is a simple but immutable law that governs the affairs of men.

Agreed, America is being paranoid by placing our name on that list. It is arash action meant probably to placate a citizenry appaled at the level of shoddiness with which the information from Farouk's father was handled. However, What the hell are these idiots saying? America should remove our name or else WHAT? WHAT now? What do we have that America can't do without? What can an irresponsible, sick and headless government do anyway? Stu[pid people, instead off giving Yaradua an ultimatum to return to his seat they are talking to the U.S. Making rubbish noise instead facing the reality that they have run our economy down to the point that for all practical purposes we cannot sever relationships with the U.S no matter how indignant we are. Are they kidding or are they that daft?

Some buffoons on here thinks because America is a "superpower" clearly means they can label a nation as a terrorist Nation. Mind you that there were loads of other Nigerians on that flight as well. Do you guys know what Sovereignty mean? This is a huge diplomatic mishap being committed by the Americans here. We clearly do not have any problem with additional security measures being carried out but placing Nigeria on a so called list is out of the ordinary If Britain, the hotbed of Islamic extremism in Europe is not on that list, how then did Nigeria make that list. Fair enough if you place Nigeria on a "fraud watch list" but not on a list of terror watch list. Some stupid Nigerians on here are only concerned about additional scrutiny when they try to apply for American Visa and not because of anything else. Who gives a damn if they refuse visas to Nigerians? The FG and the NASS have for once acted in protecting Nigerians and sending a warning signals to those countries who disrespect us

This shows the kind of leaders we have...people who have no knowledge of diplomatic wit battle.it gets me wondering what we go to all those international conferences for.Instead of crisis management they are indulging in crisis engagement. The simple way to solve this issue is to take a poll of Nigerians and that of selected African nations and discover that terrorism is not supported in Nigeria..publicize this all the way, have a prominent Nigerian say Wole soyinka (Nobel laureate) engage in an interview with a journalist from the propagandist network 'CNN' who have been on this case and answer sincerely and tactically letting them realize that Abdulmutallab had no thorough foundation in Nigeria and also that one act cannot justify Nigeria as a terrorist nation.Besides every nation has her own shortcomings for example America has serial killers, don't mean all Americans are serial killers, we have our shortcomings in the place of corruption but definitely not terrorism. This should run through international and local media...Get diplomats to visit homeland security in America and have meaningful talks on the fact that the error of a misguided individual should not be used as defamation for Nigerians besides his Parents made reports signaling that terrorism is generally not a part of Nigeria and that we are in support of the war against terrorism and are willing to give any information that will aid that war.Diplomatic visits should also involve the commonwealth and other nations to seek support.Nigeria as a nation should learn how to downplay issues and also not under-look this issue as it can affect us economically and emotionally. This is my humble suggestion. Pleading to our leaders it is high time we learn how to solve problems by not compounding it as it shows signs of incompetency in this new age.

NEXT is clearly not above propaganda and sensational headlines. This Senator and the Senate do not speak for Nigeria in this matter and your editors know it. Nigeria should not and will not sever ties with the US over this. Nevertheless, the US action has no rhyme or reason (unless there are other reasons we are not privy to). Perhaps if we had a President "on seat", this would not have happened. Certainly, there is more than enough reason for people to be very angry with what now passes for leadership in Nigeria but on this one, America must know they are wrong.

If Nigerian nation has been good, Abdul Mutallib would have not been trained outside Nigeria. Rather than speaking on this very issue, our senators should tell the entire nation what happened to our sellected President. They should tell us the truth about his health or present his medical report to us. How did our president sign the supplementary budget? Can they (senators) & FEC show the video coverage of when he signed the budget on his medical bed. A nation without president should expect such threat from a more organised nation like USA.

Eish, these Nigerian leaders are nothing more than oxymorons. They stole our mandate, and now they cant even do anything with it. What a shame. The USA arrived at the decision based strictly on intelligence available to them. Where are the Ayogus and crooks of Abuja when those islamic terrorists run amork and kill innocent Nigerians. When Sharia was introduced, did anyone of them raise eyebrows. No! their private pockets were more important than to the well being of our people. Now the visas will be denied them and their abilities to launder stolen money becomes more difficult, they scream. America is now very aware that Nigerians are capable of exporting terror anywhere, and perfecting it on any ground. After all, with thousands of innocent Nigerian deaths to their belts, American lives means nothing. Has Ayogu asked Mr. Mutallab about his religious, business, and political connections? Haba, this man is soon to be Chairman of an Islamic bank, and you have no worries? When Bukar Dipcharima stated that his goal as a Federal Minister in early '60s was to deep the koran in the Atlantic ocean, did Abuja pot bellies question those who have inherited the baton from the Dipcharimas of the North? Please Mr Ayogu, do not and I repeat, do not bring Nigerians into your mess with the USA. We will address the Americans on issues of substance and not the hollow threats you are advancing. Yeye undistinguished senator. If you want my support, do the following: 1. Prosecute the AGF, 2. sack Yar'Adua, 3. tackle Lamido in his mindless attempt to islamise banking in Nigeria,4.expose all the looters of our treasury, 5. declare your assets, 6. rid the North of the Boko Harams and militancy, 7. support the seccession of the Ibos from Nigeria, 8. Stop Soludo, 9. probe Andy Uba's PhD, 10. Resign from the senate. Oloshi.

(1) I believe that US are being open by stating we are on some "Terrorism" prone list as it's better we know this than for it to be a secret and unofficial. While it is only normal that the US step-up security with inbound flights from Nigeria, it is unfair for a whole country to be labelled this way. Afterall, there have been lots of foiled cases from UK citizens too, and UK are not on any list. (2) The fact that this was a near-miss was down to negligence on the part of the US Authorities who were armed with vital information but decided to do nothing about it (3)It is also not the time to threaten to severe ties with the US, neither is time to be overly vocal. Let's wear our humour caps for a minute, What do we expect expect the US to think when it is discovered that even our president has been "residing" in the Middle-east for the past few months?

Whatever the utterances by the Senate on this misguided TSA list,I am in support. The problem with many Nigerians is that they love to negate without fully understanding the issue at hand. A citizen of Nigeria attempts to blow up a plane when his own father alerted the American security services about his son's disturbing ways, yet American incompetence was saved by the botched attempt. The last shoe bomber and his accomplice where British and Belgian nationals. How come Britain and Belgium are not on this list. The comical thing about all of this is that the recent attempts have all come from countries that where not on this list. America is powerful but not as it was before both military and definitely economically. Personally because of the large population of Nigerians in the USA and our weakened political, economical and ethnic status, I would have said we 'review' our relationship with Amrica. If Nigerians on average where not evil and selfish we should be a player on the world stage. All I will say is those Nigerians without dual-nationality travelling to the USA or intransit please please please eat humble pie just to make your passage easy when you come across these yeye over zealous foreign airport officials!!!!

With the choronocle of events from celebation of 9/11 action by the Northern Nigerians, Killing of other tribes (mostly christians) during Mohammed Cartoon, also in the norther part of the country and the case of BOKO which was traced to have a link with Al-quada and many more. All these must added to the inclusion of Nigeria on the watch list. Again, American should not be decieved by these greedy-minded political toughts who cannot admit what is facin the country but only to enrich themselves.

Nigeria government should find a way of fighting terrorism with our self because an average northerner is a potential terrorist. God bless Nigeria my country

From what I've read so far my understanding is that this guy lived most of his adult life outside Nigeria, i.e half his life. He left Nigeria as a kid (12yrs of age) and returned "briefly or not" as a terrorist. This is not enough evidence to convict Nigeria as a nation and label the country. And for those that talk about corruption- we all know Nigeria is corrupt to the heart of the government, although could be linked to terrorism, it is not the point of discussion and it's a short sighted view. The whole story points to the fact that Mutallab became a terrorist outside Nigeria not inside Nigeria, so why punish Nigeria for sins not committed. I'll make an analogy- imagine a family of 5 kids living with their parents, 4 out of 5 kids steal at home, but not once been outside to steal, then they adopt a 12 yr old kid from outside and he shop lifts in a mall - suddenly the local govt labels the whole family shoplifters. I personally don't think the evidence is there to label them shoplifters just because of the possibility the 4 children that stole at home may also shop lift. But we're talking about terrorism, so maybe even the thought of it being possible is enough to justify the decision, maybe. Boko Haram and the internal terrorism and act of violence that has existed in Northern Nigeria has just gone to the next level, but it's upsetting that the US has jumped into conclusion so quickly about Nigeria - well you could say we have useless leaders anyway, I mean where was MR president? Do we really have a chief Justice? I can imagine OBAMA asking to call Mr president and his aides replies he's been sick for over 40 days, then he says then get me the person in command, and the aide replies Sir there is not HEAD, then his security agent brings the file on Nigeria - he reads about Boko Haram and how some idiots in the North glorify terrorism, then asks about the population and they say the Northern Muslims are more than half of the population about 55% - what would you do if you were MR OBAMA?

When Obama arrived on the political scene of America the whole world was happy. Why? (1) He preached change because what he saw was not right. Therefore he was determined to change it. Can he? Not likely. Just like a new boy in a college promising the parents to do well at college tasks. The money people in the West are ----- and they control the policy from the background. If you do not follow their style, you are out. Let us look at the intractable issue of Palestine and Israel. When that young man came in he thought it was easy to start from there. The first American President to start with that in his first year in office. What has been achieved, not a lot to write home about. Because the the powers that be must have advised him to lay-off. George Bush (junior) in his own speeches used to read "axis of evil" the new President has replaced it with it "list of terrorist Countries" Compare the two lists and see if there is a difference. Yes, Nigeria has been officially added. Why? Moslems in Nigeria are more than Christians, Sharia court, remember in the North, you supported the Arab nations, remember you do not like Israel(Jews). Who writes the speeches for these powerful men, who funds their election? Who controls the media? Did you know that most small countries employ PR companies to present their countries in better light to the world. If you want a good image abroad you either hand over the running of your country to few people to exploit you and your people or employ them as your PR. Think about it, Nigeria.

"We don't even have Nigerians; we have different ethnicities in cold war in a geographical location" I couldn't have said it better myself. We don't know what unity means. If in a potentially damaging situation like this we are still segregated, we cannot even rally round our own country and say for a fact that THIS IS NOT US. Nigerians don't do terrorism. We've taken everything else America has dished out to us, like the pussies we are but this should be the last straw. Is there no end to our lickspittle attitude? To all of you who say we can't survive without America, we have done it before and we can. We have the resources, even though they are badly managed, the fact is we have them still. Once upon a time the Naira was more than the American dollar, once upon a time Americans came to Nigeria to go to school! Yes this same Nigeria we are heaping insults on. We as a nation are self sufficient, but until we unite, we will continue to take insults like this from the west. Last but not least, to the person who claimed China suffered for challenging America, check your facts again. China is the world's largest economy, if China ever severes ties with America or anyone else for that matter that country's business will come to a standstill. America stopped importing toys from China, big whoop. China didn't give a damn, they know that for the one country that shuns them there are ten more to take their place. China has the America by the balls, they know it and so does America.

The US is not been objective in classifying Nigeria as a state that sponsors terrorism and so called state of special interest, rather this conclusion appears to be a culmination of a well-known,deep-seated hate for the Nigerian people masked by the economic gains it currently scoops from Nigeria. This decision is not different from other decisions taken out of emotions and not-well thought out such as invading Iraq and some other wars, which proved to be very costly errors. Most times decisions taken out of emotions and when under pressure usually never produce positive results and most times are wrong. Nigerians are life-loving people who can endure even the most harrowing experiences and hardly give up even in the face of daring and challenging circumstances. At least, the evidences have revealed that Farouk was NEVER trained in Nigeria at any time but his western and outside influences actually contributed greatly to building a destructive mindset. To a great extent, the widespread hate of the US among some Muslims generally can be attributed to the former's ill-thought out foreign policies and reckless wars and human carnage that have been going on for sometime now. The bitter truth is that wars beget wars. Peace begets peace. I think the US government is getting frustrated, agitated and emotional about the perceived hate towards its citizens by some Muslims and its gradual loss of power on the international scene but I would suppose that these frustrations are rather a build-up consequent upon its consistent foreign policy failures and compounded by the recent financial crisis which has significantly reduced its once imperial power over the world, paving way for another emerging power from the east. While the US continues to burn its resources to fight reckless wars and generate hate among the nations, behold, a rising power cometh from the east which is busy building and developing its economic muscle and it shall rule the world, maybe with an iron hand. There appears to be a power shift from the west to the east. Only Time will tell! We only watch with a keen interest.

The Americans should be very careful with the way they are fighting the war on terror by not creating more enemies than friends. If American cook soup for the rest of the world, the soup would be consumed, but if the rest of the world cook soup for America, they can never finish it. Being a supper or mega power dose not mean that you can manage the world alone. America should know that Nigerians are one of their friends and if they don't trend carefully on this matter, the diplomatic row that it would generate would not favour them because Nigeria is already down and does not fear any downfall. it the one that is standing that need to be careful. How do we make Nigeria "too important to ignore" in the global economy like Brazil, China, India etc?

As idiotic as these senators could be, they can`t follow the constitution to make sure Nigeia as a state have head (President) even onacting capacity, they can not deals consitutionally with the federal executive council (FEC), they can not call Aoandoka to order with his foolish interpretation the constitution, butb they want to deal with America. Which country in its right senses will wait and allow vagabound child of a stupid millionaire from a stateless nation to come and distroy its own citizen, remember its not only Americans that were on that plane. Do this Eze of a man knows what the ripple effect of this act will have cause suppose it was successful, throwing panick into the aviation business, and at the long term cause lost of revenue, jobs and worldwide panicking. Maybe he (Eze) think that every country/legislature are as stupid as the are in Abuja so as to fold their hands and ask their citizen to go to church/mosque and fast and pray? This is honestly not a debate about whether Nigeria should or can stand up to America in the circumstances. Before we even consider what the proper head of the debate should be, can we please start by ascertaining whether Ayogu Eze has any interest whatsoever in America. Does he visit that country? Does he have relations in that country? Does he have property in that country. In all likelihood, the answer to at least one of these will be yes! My point? These our legislators think from their asses! They are just a bunch of empty headed buffons! even if the man has no interest whatsoever in the US he is unaware that after Western Europe, the second home for majority of Nigerians abroad is the US. What is of more pressing importance to Nigerians at the moment? The absence of a sitting president or the irrelevant controversy they now seek to concern themselves with over the classification of Nigeria by the US? It is a shame that Abdulmutallab chose the wrong target for his very brave effort!

Posted by OmoOba on Jan 06 2010

Yes, it may not be fair to put Nigeria on this list, considering British citizens have done worse than this AbdulFarouk. But to engage the US in this way is nothing short of national suicide. It only proves that on many levels- locally, nationally and international - Nigeria is run by incompetent, money grabbing idiots! On the other hand, the upside is that if this threat is carried out, it may bring about a national expose of the powers that be in Nigeria. I personally believe Obama has a personal disdain for this giant of Africa, that has been sleeping for too long. Putting us on this list is actually a bait the nigerian govt is gupping up! The actions of Abdul Farouk may be a blessing in disguise to nigeria - i.e bring about the change the country needs- by upsetting a Super power, to take further action against the imbeciles that run this nation. As earlier said, those God wish to punish, He first made MAD!!

The whiteman and now they call us corrupt. Their banks are thriving at our expense. They encourage our leaders to steal our money and put it in their banks trhen they themselves start investigations and freeze the accounts. Tell me, does it favour us or them? They introduce diseases in their labs and test it on Africans and who has the largest population in Africa? Nigeria. The young boy in question was trained outside our shores and yet, they blacklist us. Nigerians, quit going to America and see what will happen to them. What does the World bank and IMF do to us anyway? They only give us loans which we have to pay in hundred folds. That is a trojan horse redefined and they've been doing that to us over and over.

American citizens are world citizens, my brother lives in America what if he was in that flight? What a pity!, where is our president? can he talk where ever he is? what was his comments so far? has he said anything? do we have a president? - please we have many questions than answers. Take a look at our situations, we do not have elections but we have selections, and the product of selections was the incumbent president who is not 100% fit health wise to lead a great country like nigeria? We nigerians knows, the world knows and America knows We do not have true democracy, Hillary Clinton came and told them the truth in abuja and they were all grumbling and murmuring. Information Minister handed over her daughter's hand in marriage to an American, she later began a re branding campaign for nigeria, if you change the colors can you change the characters?, and suddenly, a Nigerian was found in terror act - tell me, what direction is the re branding campaign taken? America should please help us common nigerians that has no father, no 4million pound apartment overseas, no opportunity for visa, to rescue us from the selected government of no people's vote. America should please put our name in # 1 on the list, let our name top the list of those listed countries until true democracy is found in Nigeria, until then our senate have mouth to talk but now, they are only barking they can not bite. Terrorism - I do not trust our government.

The US is looking to get it's oil from peaceful and stable countries that have little or no corruption, Nigeria wake up! They went without Iraqi oil for years, get little or no oil from Iran and now Venezuela under Chavez has been sidelined. So all this talk of cutting ties because of your oil is utter nonsense. While I agree that it is unfair to tarnish the whole country with the same brush, I think our membership in the OIC and silence in matters of islamic fundamentalism never helped (I guess we never wanted to offend the Northern "overlords"). As nice as our oil is, we were never at full capacity, thus the margin for profitability is slim anyway. America as other alternative sources and we will suffer more since our leadership never had the intelligence to diversify our economy. So, we are more dependent our biggest customer than they need us. Our government has to show not in words , but action that we have nothing to do with these muslim nutjobs.

Posted by ugo on Jan 06 2010

i am in support of the stand of our senate on this issue, we cannot be subjected to dehumanizing situations because of a breach in the security system of USA. They should take the blame for the breach and recognise that their security system failed. If America wants us to stop coming to their country, they should also stop coming to our own. We have the resources to take care of ourself and there are other countries other than their own.

Nigeria may be a mess but that does not justify the actions of the US. On what grounds have we been put on the watchlist? Because the attempted bomber was nigerian or because he travelled through nigeria? Yes the bomber was nigerian but there is no proof that he had links with any nigerian groups and he seems to have spent most of his time outside nigeria being educated in Togo, the UK and finally Yemen. I don't know whether his has a british passport or not but his influences were clearly not nigerian - I think we all know this and i assume the american intelligence agencies do too!! Yes he travelled through nigeria but his journey originated in Ghana and he also passed through Holland so surely nigeria isn't on the list for the failure to detect the explosives otherwise Ghana and Holland should be on the list too for lax security. The US isn't even saying that the security at our airport is lax (which it probably is) and using that as justification for putting us on the list because it would be foolish given he also passed through Ghana and Holland (countries they seem less keen to annoy). I can only conclude that they did this to divert attention from the lack of coordination of their intelligence agencies who they rely on to keep them safe. It is far easier to conjure up a new enemy and have people believe that "searching" Nigerians is the solution than tell them the truth. That truth is that with globalisation the intelligence agencies cannot stop every threat and that there will be losses – especially where the agencies fail to coordinate as they did in this instance. I am slightly uncomfortable with this conclusion because it would suggest the US is willing to piss off 150m Nigerian at home and in diaspora for its propaganda value. This seems a stupid tradeoff to me!! So perhaps there are other reasons we are yet to understand.

The late Herbert Ogunde had a play called "Yoruba Ronu" which means Yoruba people need to think deeply. It is time for "Nigeria Ronu", Nigeria and Nigerians need to think deeply about the situation we find ourselves. There is also a saying that " if you are in a hole, stop digging".

Of course the senate is just blowing hot air. They don't love Nigeria enough to severe ties with America. They cannot afford to let go of all the oil money that ends up in their individual pockets. It behoves Nigerians in diaspora to fight for Nigeria. We saw how quickly Dora jumped to condemn Mutalab, not that anyone supports the boy's despicable act, but she could have handled the situation better. The government could have condemned the boy's action without "throwing away the child with the bath water" Our government has no regard for us so why should the US? The onus is on us, especially the law abiding Nigerians and Nigerian Americans in the US to remove this stigma, we have to work with the human rights group and do whatever needs to be done, if not, the profiling will not only be at the airport but everywhere. Let us nip this nonsense in the bud before it is too late.

Nothing works in the country now, wait until you carry out threats. Yes, the US over reacted, but the Nigerian government must understand the US is coming for them. This is just beginning. There would be US forces in Nigeria...it’s just a matter of time. You cannot have a nation of about 150m in the condition that Nigeria is in...It’s a threat to the region and the international community. For example, who is in charge of the Nigerian Army at the moment...no one knows and why? So, think and take a long hard look at the conditions on ground in Nigeria and ask yourself why do these conditions exist and why suddenly these government officials are acting like they care about Nigeria? If they truly care as they are fraudulently showing now, these conditions will not exist in present day Nigeria. Nigeria my beloved country…I weep for you everyday.

Just imagine this was done by a chinese, indian or brasilian, would US have reacted the same way? . Lets build our roads, hospitals, schools, industries, energy, agriculture, create employment and do all the things that we need to do right and then see who will be blacklisting who. On a different note, i find it difficult to believe that Mallam Mutallab did not know that his impressionable son was keeping bad company with muslim terrorists. Sooner or later evidence will show that the "respectful banker" Mutallab was a frequent visitor to Yemen and not just his son. The investigation will expose what he has been hiding. A fruit does not fall do far from the tree. This man left First Bank to head the Nigeria's first Islamic bank.

Do we have a senate? The president has been missing for how long now? Let the senate do what is needful and stop playing to the gallery with the America issue. Do not parade this nation as an empty barrel (u know d rest) b4 other nation Mr Senate President. We call u to provide leadership and tell this nation what is happening to president yar'adua, if he is too sick, let's allow him to rest and hand-over leadership to who matters according to the book rather than make empty threat. If we organize our house, America will respect us accordingly.

@akololo. Where did you get the erroneous idea that Farouk Umar Abdul Mutallab is a British Citizen? Do British Citizens get turned down for student Visas to UK? In case you are not aware, the United Kingdom is high up on the list of Visa Waiver countries to the US of A. This means that all you need to do is dust up your British Passport, buy a ticket, fill out a form before you check in, and your name is sent to the authorities in the US to confirm or deny that you are on their 'no-fly' list. Why did he need to stroll from his flat to St. James's Square in 2008 to get a visa? Farouk is NOT a British Citizen. That you live in the UK in a posh apartment does not automatically mean you have the right to a passport. Anyway, to the matter at hand. The Senate and rest of the bunch of clowns in Abuja are not concerned if you or I are frisked, but the fact that a whole minister, or Senate President may be searched down to their underwear is painful. In a sane country, the Nigerian President would have call Oga Barack and said 'Ol boy, no vex, this is a useless spolit brat' and also apologise to the traumatized passengers. But, since the Northern Presidency wants to hold onto power and not delegate the authority to No.2, silence. So no one has called US President. His people would not reduce their presido to talking to some so-called Senate president or Minister for mis-information. Wake up people. They promised to rebrand Nigeria and are doing a remarkable job. Bunch of old dogs advertising new tricks... until December 25th.

@ugo. One is tempted to agree with you on the unacceptability of the sweeping ill-treatment meted by the US on Nigeria, but we should remember that people who behave as fools get brushed aside and looked down upon by decent people. Senator Eze talks as if the Senate cares so much about Nigerians, but the whole wide world (except Nigerian Senators)know that the contrary is the case. Does Senator Eze know that it is clear to the whole world that the Nigerian National Assembly does not care a hoot that its citizens have to spend days in endless queue at gas stations in a country that produces millions of barrels of crude daily; thanks to a govt that refuses to either keep the refineries working or privatize them for effective management? Is the problem overwhelming govt or those in govt are too corrupt to find effective solutions? Whichever is the case, brings no respect to Nigeria among comity of nations. In the matter of power supply to the citizenry, the govt of Nigeria, in which the Senate is a major component, has demonstrated utter inefficiency and shameless lack of concern over the years. Sen Eze, please tell Nigerians what manner of respect would such performances by Nigerian govts, attract from the U.S. or any other decent country, to Nigeria and Nigerians? If we prefer to behave as fools then let's revel in it quitely; we cannot be fools and expect those who in many ways have demonstrated that they love their citizens, to pat us on the back each time we ochestrate our pretence.

i am in support with the position of the senate. even though i know we have our own problem as a nation, every nation do. I still believe that we should cry out for any unfair treatment. we cannot be taken for granted, just because a security system that is suppose to be the best in the world fail to do what they should have done, that they must list whoever they want on a terrorist list. if Britain and Belgium are on that list for the same crime that a nigerian committed, then it will be a fair declaration.if US dont review this decision, then let us cut off all diplomatic relationship with them for now till further notice.

Nigerian leadership has not shown any respect for Nigerians both at home and abroad. You do not expect others to respect your citizens when you do not respect them. America will go to any length to protect her citizens and her interest and that's what it is doing. Nigerians will enjoy the same respect and protection when her leaders start putting the interest of Nigeria above theirs. When Nigeria with all its wealth can not build a well equipped modern Hospital to even treat her president, how do you expect other nations to respect her? I bet you, you will run into Nigerian doctors in those oversea hospitals where you and your love ones go for medical treatment. Other countries know about your roads, power supply, water supply, rule of law and basic infrastructures; and what do these say about Nigeria? Nigerians who travel with Nigerian passports, have always be subjected to humiliating treatment and unnecessary searches at overseas air ports especially in Europe, even before these new security measures. Maybe you have never noticed it because you fly first class or on chartered flight. In the past couple of years, Islamic fundamentalists have killed several Christians in Northern Nigeria. Northern riots by these radicals have become a routine occurrence. The southerns are afraid to call for a stop to these routine killings by these Islamic radicals. There is a group in Northern Nigeria that calls itself the Nigerian Taliban. Nigeria is a member of OIC. None of these bodes well for Nigerian image. Rich Nigerians, Nigerian Politicians and their friends and families could easily by-pass any security checks at the air port. How many times have you stood in line at the check-in at Ikeja International Air port only to see politicians and their friends go through without any check? Put all these together and you will understand why the Obama Administration took the action it did. Also, there is a leadership vacuum in Nigeria now, so who is looking out for Nigerians? Who should Obama talk to; head of state to head of state? Nigerians should be angry at their leaders not at America. And by the way, Nigeria will loose a lot if it gets into diplomatic squabbles with America. Could this be a wake-up call for Nigerian Leadership to start taking care of Nigerian problems at home? Only Time will tell. Remember and Ibo proverb "Ihe di kporo nwanyi ka umudi ga akpo ya."

In the context of airline terrorism; The list does not in anyway prevent airline terrorists in which case it would have been at best a US domestic appeasement tool. You don't need to search people when they get to the US; you need to search them before they leave to get on a plane to go to the United States. So unless the criteria for being ... Afficher davantageremoved from the list is the beefing up of Airport Secuirty procedures in Nigeria to International standards then the list is pointless in that regard.. The error made by Nigerian officials here is that the list is not related to Airport/ Airline Security ... The list represents the recognition by the US that Nigeria is a haven for the systemic growth and enhancing of radical Islamic thought which is the root of modern day terrorism which the US has is engaged in counter measures to since 2001. So the US now sees that it must counter radicalism in Nigeria and all the other countries on the list. FAIR. If Nigeria had any good sense it would embrace being on the list, Why? because firstly, Radical islam is a critical issue in Nigeria. Thousands are killed on an almost annual basis beacuse of it. Secondly, you may agree that Nigeria's underdevelopment inspite of its oil wealth is due primarily to unyielding powerbrokers largely concentrated in the islamic North of Nigeria. You could also argue that there is no way to undo or undermine radical islam without undoing the powerbrokerage ... and thereby shifting that power to the population.. Well, thats the ideal....

Though tribe and tongue may defer in brotherhood we stand. This I see as a test. We are not going to keep failing every test or crumble at every hurdle we face, 140 million of us common on!! So sad one of ours went astray, so lost was he that he took it international. It is a wake up call, a dipstick measure of how dirty the indoctrination of some of us are and i pray it will not be the beginning of worse atrocities to come. Let America make her assumptions sooner or later they will realise the folly of their actions about generalising. I agree we are not terrorists by nature, as a people we do enjoy life. America is hard to blame because they are the victim. They are masters of propagandas too. They thrive on it. They are minding their own business so let’s mind ours. We Nigerians must not lose focus on developing our country primarily in the fiery areas of electrification, healthcare, employment, industrial development, housing and roads. The so called country execs Obama, Brown cum Yar'Adua et al are merely figure heads, their likes come and go. But the electorate will always remain. We the people, the electorates of Nigeria should continue to strive to fight and winning our internal battles of developing our nation with a mind of disallowing distractions from extortionist regimes. Be it America or extremist groups of any kind. If Yar'Adua and company are not ready to get off their marks we are not going to wait for them. We are going to shake and wake them up!! My people, you and I have the responsibility of blowing the whistle on people whose activities are geared towards destroying the progress and growth of Nigeria. This is where our national security responsibilities start from. Now we know this people can grab our sons and use them for their misguided objectives we are going to fight them to the last breath. Let us all re-assess each other as parents and the companies we keep then go back home and have a good talk with our children and their friends. We Nigerians don’t acknowledge such acts. We have the responsibility of working hard conscientiously for economic and social growth and upholding the honour and integrity of the country and the citizens. I would recommend we amend our constitution after all it was created as a guideline to protect the growth and provide stability of the political and economic health of our nation and her citizens. Starting from the state level all State Governors should be mandated to revamp and empower the security agencies to improve on intelligence gathering, deal with and hold answerable every person or persons that antagonise the peace of the nation and the citizens in any manner acted or implied. All religious and social organisations must re-register with the security agencies and the activities of every religious organisation must be audited immediately. Their activities made public for transparency to the whole nation (if not then there is need for national concern). Any group that does not comply within a stipulated deadline must be destroyed without hesitation. More pressing issues: The status of the ongoing electrification project should be made public for the nation to review so we can all be on the same page and strategise on adopting a mitigation plan to move forth. Projects to create employment should be encouraged at all levels of government and incentives made available to encourage private enterprises of all sizes to create job opportunities for our languishing youth. A national department of Quality assurance, standardisation and maintenance should be created and endorsed with a set of criteria for acceptable standard of quality of service and given the authority and resources to enforce compliance across all public, private, national and international organisations in Nigeria. A new water supply system must be recreated from scratch. A new hospital or health centre must be built, equipped and staffed in every town and city within the next ten years. Let me stop here for now..... Now answer me this my people: where does the Abdulwahatever family stand in all this?? I am not losing the plot lets stay together and fight together for us not America or some blinking extremists group... Let’s put our house in order, if we stand firm no one will mess with us. One nation. One Nigeria. God bless Nigeria.

After all is said and done, with their stolen money, they will take the back door to go and buy houses abroad, send their children abroad, go for medical treatment abroad and refuse to fix anything at home, not even the roads they drive on. We should all be ashamed for allowing a bunch of gangsters lead us to where we have now found ouselves. Like sombody said: "when you are in a hole, stop digging". We can never gain any nation's respect until we fix Nigeria. Start by every individual, changing our thinking, attitudes and values. Stop chasing shadows people!!!

Hmm! This is a joke and empty threat coming from a weak and corrupt senate. When did the welfare of Nigerians become the number issue for our senators? These are legislators that have spent the past two years doing nothing-a group that have made no significant legislation. The international community knows this. Go to majority of Nigerian missions overseas and see how Nigerian are being maltreated by our government representatives. Do you know why the legislators are angry? They and their spouses are going to be affected by the US government action. Yes, I know the US government is treating us in bad way, but we need to step up our game. We need to show some seriousness. America and China don't respect weak people. We don't have good governance- the executive, legislative and judiciary arms are hopeless. There is so much stealing that they don't remember the principles of government. Can the list be amended to suit our interest? Yes, but it has to be diplomatically done, but I don't think these empty vessels in Abuja will do it for us.

It is not baffling to hear Nigerian leaders react to issues in such dishonest manner. After all they are part of the problem. Our own Senator Eze and others are threatening fire and brim stone as if himself, Ojo Maduekwe, the National Assembly or even the Presidency have what it takes to make the Americans de-list Nigeria from this List of 14 obnoxious state . Can he or they in all sincerity of situation, say that Nigeria is not fit to be on that list. We have showcased all attributes of a terrorist nation and the Americans had been watching all our every move so to them the time to act is now. We must remember that there is this Igbo adage which says that it is not on the day the child throws away the pot of oil that he is punished but on the day he pours away the oil fiber. America had been watching. They know about the pogrom the Igbos suffered in the north during the 60s, the northern religious riot of the 90s, the Boko Haram, the recent Kala-kato Islamic religious sectarian riot in Bauchi that claim over 50 lives, the hostage and kidnapping of innocent foreigners and Nigerians in the Niger Delta, kleptomanianism of our political office holders, Election malpractice, the Thiefs and Mismanaging Directors of our banking industries, and so on and on. The list is endless. Now tell me, what other form of terrorism surpasses these ones. Farouk's case is a melting point and by listing us on the double watch list, they are simply telling our leaders to fix our country and state in it. They want our leaders to know that they are no longer wanted in America for medical check ups when our hospitals could be fixed to deliver the same treatment. Their children are no longer wanted as students in America or Britain because they like farouk ( due to lack of parental guidance) eventually become security threat to their citizens. And America and Britain love and care so much about their citizens. PLS NOBODY SHOULD BLAME AMERICA FOR LOVING HER OWN. If Nigerian leaders had done their jobs well, maybe, perhaps maybe, Farouk would not have had to go to Britain in search of a more qualitative education and as such will have been under the watchful eyes of his beloved parents whom I an sure are now going through agony, regret and of course bearing deep hatred for politicians and their failed political promises that resulted to the older Abdulmutallabs sending their beloved son to Britain where he eventually became radicalized.

Nigeria should immediately severe ties with the U.S. until they remove us from their stupid list. Muttalab was taught by yemenis and not by Nigerians. He was not representing any group from Nigeria. He was representing middle east interests. when the british boy tried to bomb a plane travelling to the U.S they did not put Britain on any list. Yet evidence abounds that a lot of this people first come into contact with extremism in Britain before they proceed to Yemen or pakistan to learn more. Nigeria should close down its embassy in the U.S. if they dont remove Nigeria from that list. it is time we look inwards to solve our problems in conjunction with China, Inida, Israel and U.A.E etc America and Britain will never allow Nigeria to grow. indeed American oil companies and European oil companies have been stealing Nigeria oil wealth for the past 3 decades without giving us anything in return. We Nigerians condemn terrorism in its entirety but we refuse to be labelled as terrorists because of the act of one person. When Timothy Mcveigh an american, blew up government offices in Oklahoma, why didnt America label itself a nation of terrorists. Nigeria should get serious and look to Agriculture and information and communication technology to bring itself out of the doldrums

Look, there is no nation that is independent of another,so we do not begin to imagine that the U.S can possibly operate in isolation. We need them as much as they need us,oil or not. Fact is,the U.S policies towards developing countries are patently discrimanatory and unfair. It is about time both nations begin to recondider the ramifications and complexities involved in their relations. No American is superior to a Nigerian,no matter what criteria is used. To imagine that is slavery mentality. Before the current matter, there was the case of the shoe bomber. He was British. But at the end,Great Britain was never put on any security watch list. The U.S qietened out on the matter on account of their bias for Euro-americanism. The Americans are a very selfish brood of humans who will only see and do things the way they feel the world should go.It is not for nothing that the Iraniand are calling their bluff. They owe it to themselves to be introspective about how they conduct their affairs as they relate to other nations. As things stand today, they can only but win to themselves more enemies. It is a good thing that the Nigerian government is standing up to them on this occassion. The Chinese,Russians,Venezuelians and Iranians saw the light long ago,and it is wrong to imagine that the only way to go is to continue to cow to them. They continued to treat the Chinese as dirt until they realised lately that they-the Americans are loosing grounds to the Asians, a hithero inferior class of people. That was what they tagged them fifteen years ago. It is wrong to visit the ill of an individual on a whole innocent nation and to insist we should not react. We are talking soverignty here, and there is no superior nation, developed on developing,no matter the popular appellation. They should be made to reverse that evil policy otherwise a tit for tat will be in very good order.Well done senators!

For all those people canvassing for Nigeria to shift her business focus to China & co, you do not still get the point. These countries are even worse than America to deal with. It is only from within Nigeria that we can assert our self worth.

the parents should learn so much from this saga, the consequents of their falure to empower their childrens with our African moral and alltitude is not only on individual alone but on the whole nation and continent. forgething that this is a child that has never stay in great contry(NIGERIA) to have a morally culture up-bring. above comment shows another black sheep of the family like umaru faruok. America can not be nigeria i love my country. thanks

I'm worried about the no of comments and interests this issue has generated. I wish the senators will take the issues of corruption, power supply, education, roads, constitution, missing president, economy and other local matters as seriously as this. They are concerned because they and their family will not be able to travel to US with ease anymore. The US cannot begin to worry about a nameless, leaderless country that seems to lack direction. If we get it right locally, we can command respect from US and other countries. With corruption endemic in our system, how can we guarantee to US that this will not happen again? With porous borders, unrest everywhere, come on, the US has more important things to worry about. Wake up people... I wonder how many of you have travelled and will ever travel to the US sef.

@Yoyo, No Nigeria should not seat back and take everything. The fact is a citizen of your country attempted to blow up an American, regardless of whether he was trained outside Nigeria or not, he is a Nigerian citizen, and America has the right to do what is necessary to protect it's citizens, so you people take the punishment like big boys and line up to be padded down, and subjected to scrutiny. Perhaps you did not see the documentary on CNN on how many Islamic fundamentalist in the North supported his action, some even condoning it. Maybe it is time to reconsider our union, and perhaps lets us go our separate ways North and South Nigeria, we keep the oil, the north can keep the stolen wealth.

Ironically all these morons in the National Assembly have houses and children in the US and when you get to the US embassy you see them there strutting around likes flies on shit...the hypocrites. For those supporting the embargo on the say so of the Senate - the embargo will only be on your heads - they will keep traveling and dealing with the US while the rest of us will continue to suffer. Yes the US is being biased, Britain has had would be bombers but you guys are we Britain? do we have the level of co-operation and economic ties with the US that Britain has? Right now we have no President for Obama to be in touch with, your sick president has not been to any UN meetings for over 2 years and you have no US Ambassador. Try being in the shoes of the US - with all the lies floating around Nigeria with our thuggish executives: Dora, Aoondaka, Madueke and co and our embarrassing lack of infrastructure - what would you do? How do we know that Dora and Ojo are not happy and did not orchestrate this? This is just like being a Roman in the early days with the circus for the poor masses - to entertain themselves while the elite fiddle and chop. Now we have all lost focus on Yar'adua and the thieving PDP machinery who are allocating contracts and buying property in the UK while we sit writing comments on NEXT about the inequity of the US. Nice one. A beg everyone face what concerns us - Yar'adua must go and anyone who does not perform should go too - enough of the nonsense - Nigerians when do you ever say 'enough'?

The question is, does Nigeria's existence depend on the US? Any answer? If yes, why are we still poor after 50 years of oil exploration which US enjoys and looks the other way when it comes to the issue of corrupt leaders? In this respect, the noise makers could be right. However, since most of them travel to the US or UK to enjoy their loots, now they have to be humiliated every time they travel there. The noise is all about them, not about poor Nigerians.

China what? I bet, if we allow china in Nigeria, we should prepare for another Abacha. Because China will sponsor a rogue in power for them to siphon and dry Nigerian oil reserve. The last country to think of is China.

Reading most the comments above appalled me as I just couldn't understand if people making those comments are either Nigerian or supposed Nigerian. Fact a Nigerian tried to blow up a plane on American soil. Fact Nigeria have Islamic fundamentalist in the North. Fact we are no match for the US in any form. Yet, it is a fact that as a sovereign state we have to protest when we felt undone by any country. It's of no use trying to point out whose interest these corrupt leaders are trying to protect if you have ever travelled out of Nigeria you will understand that the way we are treated is not as a result of the corruptions of our leaders but by the dishonesty of you and I. Forged visa, passports in different name or different photo, credit card fraud, 419, deceitful intention to travel etc. those of us that have been honest enough about out travelling have been embarrassed on numerous occasions. Imagine what will now happen after being listed among countries such as Afghanistan and Pakistan. Let open up our eyes to things bigger than corrupt leaders. That list is a bigger stain that can ultimately destroy an already fragile Nigerian economy. In as much as I don’t support my country been included in that horrible list, I cannot support open confrontation with the US. Perhaps a more diplomatic process and sincere commitment on our leaders to improve security in the country at our boarders could push US to have a change of heart. We are all disillusioned Nigerians yet we cannot hide our background. This is not time to join in kicking a country that's down already but time to stand up for what is right, peace and responsibility on the part of our leaders. We are Nigerian no matter what we should be proud without that Nigerian will be off the map of the world in no time not by war but by economic doom and disasters. For you information I don’t live in Nigeria presently but I always look forward to when I will get back to where I can call homeland and nobody will check the colour of my skin.

Think it's about time we started speaking up because if we do not everyone will start taking us as beach donkies that they can ride. Personally i think it's what we need to be isolated, stopping all the imports coming in so we can start developing ourselves from within or at most looking to other african nations for trade. Although we should also look to sort out our so called security at the airport which can be overlooked as long as you have some spare change left in your pocket. We have all that is needed to be self sufficient as a nation as long as the long list of issues are looked out and dealt with.

lwkm..Nigeria and our plenty drama. Yes America has spoken, instead of them to put up a good speech that will address all areas of concern,Eze is threatnin empty words. Can Jerry Gana write up something for them and pass it to the sorry cat-Dora to make the speech or we can hire Fani Kayode for that.Eze can only be bothered if they restrict his movement to Germany.

People lets not misplace things. Most of you have gotten this issue all wrong. Poverty and poor goverment has never been the motive for this kind of useless act by that foolish spoilt boy. The young man in question was never poor he was very rich and never knew anything about bad goverment ploicy or wether we have a president or not. Most of you talk and dont know the implications of this action america has done, if you studied history and inetrnational relations and diplomacy you may understand. Dont think this is a way of making our leaders better cause it really has nothing to do with poverty in our country or corrupt leaders. It is a a case of America actng harshly on Naija. One thing you forget is no matter how bad this leaders are they still have this Naija blood in them which is love for father land I hope they reverse their decision.

I wonder why one incident should put us on the watch list. it is totally unfair and unacceptable by nigerians. We are not terrorist and we would never be. our track record of things not been too good for the masses and our ability to patch ve never propmted us to go into such act and it will never.

Posted by Fredrick on Jan 07 2010

Senators, do you think you are talking to fools? All these lamentation concerning Nigeria being placed on a watch list is for your own interest. If there are no hinding and implicating things in your so called briefcase, while are you afriad of scanning? Why are you afraid of being watched? you are all speeking blonders. What are you doing in america every month when you all has turned every economic sectors in your country upside down. You all should better go down on your knee and thank God that a terrosit has been revealed from the terrorist part of Nigeria.

Posted by tiana on Jan 08 2010

Oh please, Its obvious colonial mentality still exists in nigerians today! Even If Nigeria cuts off her ties with the US, NIgeria can grow to be a superpower. THE ONLY THINGS STOPPING US ARE CORRUPTION AND SELFISHNESS which are propagated by the America government! I dont know why people place America on some high royal throne! THe truth of the matter is America is not a country to be worshipped because right now it is a powerful empire, but like ALL powerful empires IT WILL SOON FALL!

There is a simple solution to this, A) Let Nigerians boycott the U.S. B) Lets not sell the U.S our crude. The question is can we survive? Do we have alternative plans? I think the senator didnt really think deep about his statement. The Senator should have realised U.S is our largest consumer in crude, and the proceed from crude (since 90% of our revenue comes from it) is used to run our government. The fact that we are a consuming nation leaves us with little or no bargaining power. I doubt if we can survive without selling crude to the U.S. So goodluck on severing your ties, Lets see how you senators finance your lavish lifestyle without the almight dollar.

If America refuses to get Nigeria name off the black list,it then shows that their was never a relationship in the first place if not for our resources(oil).if they get the countrys name off the black paper, will they get it off there mind ? I think that is one question will should always bear in mind.I think this is America worry because their security is been challenged by African man that is so crazy....( WAKE UP, MR OBAMA OF WHITE HOUSE).I think is day break.

NO MATTER WHAT, I believe Nigeria has a great future and is richly endowed with all the people and resources necessary to accomplish it. Every Nigerian needs to abandon selfish instincts and stone-throwing tendencies and start contributing to the well-being of the nation. With God, Nigeria can become the pride of the world!

Please make my day and severe ties Nigerian! You are the most arrogant group of immigrants I have ever come across. You think you are better than other blacks in the U.S., yet you have nade no contributions to the country. Please stay out the U.S.
