Government orders police protection for youth corps members’ residence

Nigerian president, Umar Musa Yar`Adua has instructed the Inspector General of Police, Ogbonnaya Onovo to provide “twenty-four hour police protection” for National Youth Corps Service (NYSC) members nationwide, the Minister of Youth Development, Akinlabi Olasunkanmi, said at the weekend.

This is in response to the recent attacks and killings of corps members in some states of the federation.

A statement signed at the weekend by Rasheed Olawale, an aide to Mr. Olasunkanmi said all commissioners of police in the 36 states and Abuja had been notified of the president’s directive.

Mr. Olasunkami announced the president’s decision, while presenting a paper titled: “Our Youth, Democracy and Nation building,” at a lecture organized by the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC) in Osogbo.

“States governments must, however, make this feasible by building corps members’ lodges where these young Nigerians in service of the fatherland can be accommodated and secured throughout the duration of the service year,” he said.

The vulnerability of corps members became an issue of national concern, when Ibukun Akinjogbin, Leke Akande and Tola Odusola, were killed on November 28th, 2008 in their residences in Plateau State by a mob protesting the Jos council elections.

On September 26, 2009, Grace Uchang, a 25-year-old serving in Borno State, was raped and killed near her residence in the Customs area of Maiduguri.

Also, three weeks ago, on November 03, 2009, two females undertaking their national service in Kano State were raped at gunpoint by a gang of 14 young men at the official ‘Corpers lodge’ of Adamu Secondary School, in Fagge area of Kano. Authorities have not released the identity of the victims, disclosing only that one is a native of Lagos State while the other hails from Oyo State.

These, coupled with instances where corps members died of illnesses as well in road accidents whilst travelling to and from their places of assignments, have strengthened the position of Nigerians calling for the scrapping of the scheme. The calls have been very vocal in recent times.

Meeting critical needs

However, the spokesperson for the NYSC, Abdulwahab Obomeile, has blamed state governments for the lack of security for youth corps members. In an article sent to media houses at the weekend, Mr. Obomeile said the accusation that the NYSC was “camping people’s children in decrepit hostels and unsecure camps,” was an unfair one.

“The NYSC cannot force a state government to provide conducive camping environment,” he said. Admitting that corps members “have no input into their deployment and posting for national service in strange land, except cases involving married women and those with life-threatening illnesses,” Mr. Obomeile said the NYSC had been agitating for better living standards for youth corps members and that some state governments were responding.

The NYSC official said the nation would suffer if the scheme was cancelled as demanded by some people.

“A lot of schools, particularly in the rural areas would close without the regular supply of corps members,” he said. “In very extreme cases, corps members serve as principals, vice principals, games masters and tutors.”

The issue of posting NYSc members to strange lands where they know noting about their ways of life should be stopped. LET NYSC MEMBERS SERVE THEIR FATHER LAND IN THEIR INDIGENIOUS STATES.

President Umar Musa Yar`Adua is surely a Court Jester, how on earth does he want policemen guard Corps members posted to villages & hamlets without a single police post within the range of 100kms. He probably guessed Corps members are quartered in reasonable locations as it were during his own service year, unfortunately people like Ogbulafor & co that would have advised him manipulated the system to obtained spurious NYSC Certificates hence they can never understand what it takes to be a corps member. The truth is that this scheme has outlived its usefulness and MUST be scrapped or amended to meet present realities. The ungodly silence of the political leadership is because the victims are always southerners and I hope they would not wait till southerners start subjecting corps members posted down of river Niger to similar treatment their children are receiving up North. Nigeria is surely running a crazy system, is it southerners fault or making that young people from the North are deliberately denied Education by their glutton leaders. Imagine that most southern parents send their children through private schools up till the University because the public Educational system has collapsed cos of official wickedness and same children are compelled to go serve in some mad locations up north and get killed. If some Northern states are in need of Teachers let them apply to the Federal Ministry of Defence to supply them with Military Instructors, in fact Corps Members interested in this could apply through the FMD who would have subjected them to basic Military Trainings before posting them to such Military humanitarian service in Northern states. People on such assignments would have permanent jobs, military trainings and they could defend themselves against any attack. Please stop posting Corps members to the North for now!

tell the shehu of borno and the sultan of sokoto to issue a fatwa against the harming of youth corpers and stop beating around the bush...are the two institutions not being sustained on oil earnings....

If a serving commissioner that has enjoyed western education can wake up one morning and begin to assemble illiterates (other "co-literates") to fight against western education in 21st century in the name of a religion, then it is not a surprise that such inhuman act can happen in the north. I truly support OBALOLA. NYSC that use to be an attraction during our days is no longer attractive. I dont blame those who seeks for exemption at all cost or ladies claimed to be married to escape being posted to the lions den up north. I have done mine few years ago, believe me I would have looked for every opportunity to escape doing it or better still, I would be posted to my state of origin. NYSC has outlived its usefulness. SCRAP IT or better still post corps members to their state of origin where their values are known.

I get tired reading Nigerians comment becos it always seem like a fight or war. Firstly NYSC is a good programme which has been in existence for over 35 yrs, there are problems which have become more obvious in the last few yrs. the question is what is the solution rather than make it an issue of ethnic connotation. True the victims and actions have always reflected ethnic and religious faces, but the actions of this people are criminal. I suppose the local govt chairman and state gov. should be made to bear the brunt of such crisis, in a way they are forced to protect the service men and women. Also the traditional rulers in these areas should also be held responsible. Either way make the corps member safety a responsibilty of the local community heads which may include 40 yrs jail term. I enjoyed my youth service and without it I would not have gone to the northern part of nigeria. I have friends I cherish in the north and experience I will always remember.

Abdulwahab Obomeile is not in touch with reality. Is it right to subject corps members (young professionals to be)to the whims and caprices of state governments? If the state can not provide befitting facilities, why do you keep sending corps members there? I recall that in my batch in Bayelsa state ALL the gals caught a toilet disease (except for the few who wisely used the bush as their toilet),because the pit toilet was full to the brim from day one. The ladies were bathing in the grass outside between 3 and 4 am in full view of any lecherous insomniac man o' war or soldier. the water was unfit for bathing (not to mention drinking!) as it was brown and oily. The worst part of it was that these lady corpers were busy scratching their private areas when they should have been standing at attention on the parade ground. They complained, but did anybody listen? The Kaiama grammar school is still being used in spite of all this. The village where I served had and still has no police station. The nearest police post is between two and four hours away (depending on your mode of transport). Jungle justice is still carried out there on a regular basis. I say SCRAP NYSC, it has outlived it's usefulness.

Why are they holding this failure of a program so dearly and since when should sverving ones nation be be by force and not voluntary especially in a nation like ours that has not and is not giving it citizens anything in return. Those that have and are serving have they been promised or provided jobs at the conclusion of their program or they are being left to go roam on the street.... I figured so with the alarming statistics of millions of graduate unemployment. I would rather do a compuslsory one year military service with skills that I can use now or later in life both home and abroad than this waste of time called NYSC.
