Kidnappers demand N500 Million for Soludo's father

Print print Email email Share Share

No word has been heard about the whereabouts of Mr. Simon Nwankwo, father of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Chukwuma Soludo, who was kidnapped on Tuesday night. However, last night, the kidnappers of the 78-year old man broke their silence.

They are demanding the sum of N500 million as ransom before they would release the father of the putative candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2010 Anambra Sate governorship election. A senior police officer of the Anambra State command of the Nigerian police who does not want his name in print, confirmed the report of the ransom demand. He, however, said the command had not been officially notified.

Mr.Nwankwo, was kidnapped in his hometown of Isuofia in Aguata local government Area on Tuesday by a six-man gang who came in a Peugeot 406 saloon car.

Chris Uba invited

The spokesperson of the Anambra State police command, Emeka Chukwuemeka, also confirmed to NEXT that the command had issued an invitation to Chris Uba, a leader of the PDP in Anambra state to report to the command today.

Mr Chukwuemka declined comments on whether the invitation was connected to the kidnap of Mr Soludo’s father. “We invited him because of the political meeting he (Chris Uba) convened in the state capital yesterday,” he said. Sources, however, told NEXT that the invitation was on the directive of the Inspector general of Police, Ogbonnaya Onovo.

In an earlier phone conversation with NEXT, Mr Chukwuemeka said the command was yet to establish any contact with the kidnappers. He, however said that he believed that with the intense efforts being put into the search, Mr Soludo might soon be rescued.

“The command is doing its best to establish a lead, and the command has not found any,” he said. “This command has been doing everything humanly possible to establish contact with the kidnappers, but up till now, no information yet. That does not mean that even now or soon, we cannot re-establish contact with the kidnappers or rescue the man.”

Whiff of politics

But the Southeast Zone of the Nigeria Renewal Group (NRG) has accused the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party of being responsible for the kidnap.

A statement by the group’s chairman, Ejiamatu Chikwado, said the kidnap was politically motivated.

“The national leadership of the PDP ,since the Colonel Ahmadu Ali days, should be held responsible for acts of terrorism like this one because it has always rewarded its favoured members who brazenly indulge in all manner of criminal acts, even against fellow party members,” he said.

“The kidnapping of the PDP candidate’s father, apparently by his own party men, is what would always happen in a country where crime is rewarded, instead of being punished. Nigeria is not yet a country governed by the rule of law, but by the rule of men.” Chris Ngige, a former governor of the state was abducted on July 10 2003. But the group said this was equally done by his political opponents, whom it said were not punished.

“The abductors were thus encouraged to do more dastardly things, like the burning of such state institutions as the House of Assembly, the legislators’ quarters, Government House, the state judicial headquarters, broadcasting stations and others in November, 2004, for a whole two days in broad daylight,” the group said.

Please those kidanppers should free the old man he is innocent afterall he has already lost one eye to kidnappers in the past. To Soludo,, i urge you to carry on its one of those prices you have to pay for venturing into the murky waters of Nigerian politics. I just hope at the end of the day soludo will still have some credibility left in him to run and possible take Anambra to greater heights.

Is it N500 Million or billion? Is this kidnapping politically or criminally motivated? Regardless,Nigeria is on the brink. Heaven help us!

We have Problems in this country...Anambra is just manifesting its own unique style. A million wrongs can not make a right. The kidnapping in Anambra of Soludo’s father should be condemned- Be it politically motivated not for it is criminal. I do not know who will disagree with the fact that some “Nigerian element” when in power does what ever they like… In the case of Anambra - PDP in last few years have decided to continually support the wrongs to the detriment of the Anambra people. Please take your mind back to the Chris Nigige and Chris Uba’s case, the effect of that crisis on the State and also the way and manner Soludo became PDP candidate for Anambra state. I am afraid we may not have seen the worst in Anambra…

Posted by kenny adebo on Oct 29 2009

what is really the problem with anambra that crimes are committed without apprehension of the culprits This is pathetic I was there last week and all i saw was serious extortion by the police. They might have even seen the old man and collected only 20 naira from the kidnappers. NOW they demand 500 Million NIGERIA will be Great again Thats for sure!

Posted by edward on Oct 29 2009

There can be no end to crime in Anambra if justice is not allowed to hold sway. Chukwuma Soludo as the governor of the state could actually become one of the best that could emerge from Nigeria. However,we must not lose focus of due process. A nation without well established way of doing things will always fail. Due process must be followed in the selection of candidate. However, we all know the kidnapping is more political than anything else. And we know who is responsible. But what keeps amazing me is why Anambrarians are allowing their fate to be decided by one man who has no inclination of reasonability in the way carries himself. Why allow a nonentity to be in charge. Pls wake up and stop selling your souls for money. Anambra wake up.

What is happening in Anambra State since recent time is not the promise. Anambra State is the heartbeat of Igboland; and therefore, anything that happens in Anambra State affects the gamut of Igboland. The Igbo nation is geometrically becoming ungovernable due to brashness of some unscruplous individuals. It's very unfortunate. May the efforts of our Igbo-heroes past not be in vain. God have mercy, and redeem Anambra State-nay, Igboland, from the clutches of evil cabals. Amen and Amen. Jude Umahi is from Ebonyi State.

I pity Anambra State. When shall this symbolic state rise and shine? When shall it be free from self destruct? Is the state cursed or what? Why can't the elders appease the gods, if the state is cursed? As an independent non-igbo, as much as I would have loved Soludo to rule the state and bring a new lease of life, the PDP is a party of self-destruct. They kill all their talents and hopefuls with everything unconstitutional as a "family matter". Why are they afraid of the primary? If Soludo cannot win a primary in a free and fair election, it means that Anambra people do not want him, simple. But then, the paradox is that the alternative is to hand over the state to area boys and then back to all motion no movement, a circus show that has been on display right from Ngige era. Lest I forget, where are the Ekwemes, the Achebes and the rest elders? Will somebody please wake up Zik from the dead? The sun is setting here.

Placing ransome on a human life is like valuing in monetary terms the worth or total value of the person. Is Chukwuma Charles Soludo's father not worth more than that? I am sure the old man will include his children if he is asked to draw his balance sheet. But all these are worthless and only happen because we live in a society where life is nasty, brutish and short. If the kidnappers are listening the old man should be released unconditionally.

Posted by Payment on Oct 29 2009

You are all talking rubbish; this was a man who offered 35M each to all the opposition what is wrong if the boys on the streets ask him for just 500M. Those boys deserved better pay than that little 500M here you are talking nonsense; let him pay for his father if he can pay to other opponent. I need to know why we always against anything that concerns poor people in this country, when big men do things no problem but when poor man want his own share all law in Nigeria book will be quoted, WHYYYYYYYYYYYY

Posted by FLORIANA on Oct 29 2009

I have a feeling stingy Soludo will not be able to part with N500 million out of his hard-earned loot just for 2 additional years the old man has got to spend on this clime. he will rather use N50 million which is 10% of the sum to do the funeral and move on with his life.

Posted by Austine Uche Ejeke on Oct 29 2009

Good talk Ejimatu Chikwado. How I wish people will be bold enough to make this kind statement. The only thing is that he failed to mention names. And we know the person, money miss road and stark and smelling CHRIS UBA. Nigeria can never be great if we don’t discipline any erring citizen no matter how highly passed. It was the same Chris Uba that boasted to expose how PDP rigged the 2003 election and Obansanjo could not do anything. Fellow Igbo men let us not destroy ourselves and not garner bad reputation. Let us unite and move the region forward, no matter the amount of money given to you. Remember that it’s your land that you are desecrating. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Posted by A. Ibori on Oct 29 2009

When Chris Uba Kidnapped Chris Ngige years ago, Obasanjo looked away from the crime scene. Today Kidnapping has gone full circle in Anambra. Mark my word, yaradua will one day be kidnapped in Abuja and it will be a new dawn in Nigeria.

Posted by Mohammed abubakar on Oct 29 2009

It is clear to me now that no body kidnapped soludos father. All kidnapping stories is an attempt to intimidate Chris Uba. Soludo should just go and release his father from whereever he is hidding him and forget this his stupid ambition. Police demands ransom when you have been kidnapped at checkpoint. So Soludo should pay, afterall where did he get N35m he was dishing out. The sin of a son is being meted out to the father. Teach your son to walk the righteous path, so that you can have peace. Nigeria is getting better.I pray these boys starts kidnapping all these looters and cronies soon. Make life unbearable to them.

Micheal Ijere, thanks for that frank talk. Some other commentaries are just trash. People talk about Soludo, Soludo - the way he was chosen, the "money" he made in CBN, his entry into Anambra politics. Is it not rubbish? Soludo has absolute right to participate in the affairs of his state. It was his opponents that went to court to obtain an injunction stopping the PDP from concluding its primaries - at the brink of time set for submission of flag bearers to INEC. Are we sugggesting that PDP should not present any candidate? Nonsense. I make bold to say that no body has the right to dictate to a poitical party how to do its business as long as it conforms with its constitution and the laws of the land. To the fools who talk about Soludo having made much money - they are just being silly. Soludo's wealth (financial and intellectually) which he acquired legitimately is the envy of his opponents, period. Anambra need urgently to tap from the resources of this erudite economist, banker, technocrat, world bank consultant and universal diplomat. The song now should be - Soludo march on, disregard the evil machination of the rotten, illitrate money-bag-Godfathers, do your fatherland pride, go ahead; contest and win the elections, rule Anambra State so that it will no longer be business as usual. As for the old man, God will punish the perpetrators of this heinous crime against humanity.

Posted by Leonards Onyekwere on Oct 29 2009

The real problem is not Chris Uba, or Chukwuma Soludo but the system that allow them to get away with their criminal excesses. Kidnapping is one of the worst form of criminal acts and when you fail to punish the first act, a kidnapper will strike again. While Chukwuma Soludo's preoccupation at this point should have been engaged in effort to clear his name from alleged failure as the Governor of Central Bank to carry out the oversight functions of that position, instead like other kleptomaniac members of PDP, Soludo has been rewarded by PDP to run unopposed as the consensus flag bearer for the upcoming gubernatorial election in Anambara State. This to me is a clear indication of the hopeless condition of our electoral system. Moreover, if there exist a proper rule of law in Nigeria, Chukwuma Soludo should be answering questions at the House of representatives, he should be under investigation by the police headquarters, the EFCC should be on his tail and other concerned agencies should have invited Chukwuma Soludo for quizzing on why he misled the country to believe that Nigeria's financial system was not in jeopardy when such concern was raised at the peek of the global financial meltdown. Meanwhile, an old man who should be enjoying his retirement has no business with what his son is doing, those who kidnap our elders or even little children should never be shown any mercy if there exist any mercy at all for kidnappers.

Posted by Don Joe on Oct 29 2009

Well, this is very unfortunate to Mr. Soludo. But my advise to Chris Uba is "EVERYDAY IS FOR THE THIEF BUT ONE DAY IS FOR THE OWNER OF THE HOUSE". So Mr. "GODFATHER" keep it up

Posted by DIGA on Oct 29 2009

Is there not in all of this, the remotest possibility that the kidnapping of Prof. Soludo's father could be masterminded by the world-class economist-cum-politician himself, or perhaps by cronies loyal to him within the corrupt umbrella that prides itself as the largest crookhouse in Africa? As a political strategy to whip up public sympathy behind an imposed candidate? And maybe also as a tool of witch-hunting to give a dog a bad name in order to kill it? My sobre opinion is that Chris Uba might either be a much-needed smokescreen or a sacrificial chicken in the PDP's bid to impose Soludo on Anambra State. Does anyone understand my view?

It was the poor man that suffered the ill-effects of looting. The rich man felt untouchable because of fortified properties, bullet-proof cars and high powered securities. thier kids go to school outside the country and thoroughly protected. Unfortunately, the members of their family who are almost innocent of the atrocities have to be, kidnapped, blindfolded and ill-treated. THIS IS A WAKE UP CALL. WE NEED SECURITY, POWER (ELECTRIC) AND OUR BASIC AMENITIES BACK. IT TAKES EVERYBODY'S effort. The common man, the politicians and the law-enforcers. We can do it. The hardest part is when to start.

Soludo this is not time for you to sit down and look, believe me you have enemies as far as politics is consciened,do everything possible to save that innocent old man.

Posted by nwaogu on Oct 29 2009

whether soludo was selected or hand picked is no justification for the fathers kidnap. you dont fight for a crime by commiting more serious crimes. the kidnapers should be brought to book

Posted by Akib Abiola on Oct 29 2009

What is the government doing to stop kidnapping in Nigeria. Everytime your turned around Nigeria is becoming notorious in crime. They continued to pay the ransoms and no one has been caught yet. How do you deliver 500 million naira and you don't catch the criminals. i think the police are in it together.

Soludo or government should not give a dine to those idiot or whatever they called themselve. We are working on how to trace those guys out.Their crime cup in Anambra and other part of the country is full,we are getting down on them. This should not distract Soludo away from the next year election.I am not from the east but Nigeria is my country, and this ugly menace of kidnaping our fellow "HUMAN BEING" not GOAT or DOG "MUST STOP".My humble advise to the kidnapers is to just return the old man back to his house or drop him where people can see him, if not ONCE THEY ARE CAUGHT-THEY SHOULD BE KILLED PERIOD.A DEVICE WILL BE OUT NEXT YEAR ON HOW TO GET TO KIDNAPERS ANYWHERE ON EARTH.cymon99@canada.com ......WATCH OUT.

I may sound alarmist, but the truth need be told. The events in Anambra may sound the death knell for Nigeria's hard earned democracy. No thanks to PDP that decided to hand pick Soludo instead of primary elections to pick a candidate out of a motley crowd of aspirants. Let all the godfathers, the Ubas, Offors and other Grade A illiterates in Anambra and beyond continue to ride rough-shod over a long suffering people with their ill-gotten wealth. The time for real change is nigh.

Comedy!

Posted by Babafemi on Oct 29 2009

Which will make a bigger box office? " A Country Called Nigeria" or "The Pirates of Anambra State"? How do we classify this movie? PG13 OR PG18? or PG40 and above??? Thriller, adventure, drama or comedy??? I need opinions people.

As far as i am concern, revolution is gradually taking place in Nigeria. The way and manner in which Soludo emerged as PDP candidate is not in the best interest of the party as the largest party in Africa. Therefore, Nigerians should wake up from their slumber in order to defend our nascent democracy.

different strokes...the fruits of a failed state. do not worry it will go round.everybody must in a way get a share. we must prevail on our leadership to lead sacrificially and benevolently. untill then...expect anything.

The Ibo man's love for money is their undoing. It is unparalled and unprecedented in human history. The Yoruba's started the film industry, Igbos took it to a different level were films are made and released within a month. Kidnapping and ransom-demanding was started by militants in he Niger Delta. Once again, the Igbos have taken it to new heights. In their quest for easy wealth, nobody is spared -children, old women and men. YOU ARE THE SHAME OF THE NATION!!!!

THE PDP HAD LITTLE CHOICE IN NOMINATING A CANDIDATE AT THE LAST HOUR, IT WAS SOLUDO AND COULD HAVE BEEN ANY OTHER CANDIDATE,SO SOLUDO SHOULD CONTINUE TO FOCUS ON HIS ELECTION,ONE THING I AM CONVINCED IS THAT HONEST AND INTELLIGENT PEOPLE IN ANAMBRA AS WELL AS THE PDP,KNOW WHO IS IN THEIR BEST INTEREST AND THEY WILL NOT LOSE THIS OPPURTUNITY FOR THEIR GENUINE DEVELOPMENT, NEVER MIND THE NOISEMAKERS WHO ARE MISCIEVIOUSLY TRYING TO DISSUADE SOLUDO, THEY WILL LIKELY FAIL AS THE MAN IS NOT A SOFT MEAT.

GOODY GOODY , THERE IS NO NATION PLEASE, THE IBOS HAVE ALWAYS EXPRESSED A DESIRE TO HAVE THEIR SEPARATE COUNTRY, IF THEY ARE SO BAD ...JUST ALLOW THEM TO GO AND LET US SEE WHICH COUNTRY WILL BE GREATER...NIGERIA OR BIAFRA

I thought we had heard the last on kidnapping....I guess we need more than prayers to save us from this menace.

Posted by Okoye Anthonia on Oct 30 2009

The bible said that is the same cup dat u uz in measuring 4 somebody dat wil be uz 4 u, so as u are kidnapping pple so shaal ur own be one day bcos wot goes around comes around.plz point of correction Anambra is no longer home for all, is now 'LIGHT OF THE NATION'. Then for soludo family i think u pple shud jus pray to God rather than giving that money bcos giving them means supporting the criminals.

We will continue talking until everything falls apart. We need action. We all know what needs to be done but we are all too afraid to stand up and act. The suffering will never end until we gather ourselves and cleanse this country.

kidnapping kidnapping kidnaping how are we sure that the people demanding for 500 miliion are the real people with soludo's popcy, did they here the old man speak..........now militants are calming down the hipocrits in anambra state wants to continue the game the niger delta started infact we don suffer

Posted by OBI OKONKWO on Oct 31 2009

IT WOULD BE VERY REWARDING IF THE INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE OGBONNA ONOVO WHO HAS RE-STATED HIS READINESS TO FIGHT KIDNAPPINGS IN THE COUNTRY SHOULD INVESTIGATE THE PRESENT CASE PROPERLY AND PROSECUTE THE OFFENDERS.

I don tell professor of economics b4 say make he go back to class room bcos his students misses his big big economics terms.not in d nigerian politics bcos as former CBN boss he succeded in stealing money not rebranding of banking sector. conclusively,I advise soludo to still look into what I said b4 him account enter red.

Posted by omos on Oct 31 2009

if soludo can promise to give 35milion naira to each candidate to step down for him,so 500milion naira to save his father's life should not be the problem, afteral he has printed the money from our bank before he was remove.but to me let pdp go& use ten soludo as their candidate, ngige wil beat all of them, bcos ngige is heavenly anoited candidate for anambra to move forward.as for pdp, they are the kidnapers themself,i call them people kidnapin party.soludo if u like save ur fathers life&if u like no save his life,na ur own papa not my own,so i don't care @ all bcos u're a looserrrrrrr

Posted by victor ,o on Oct 31 2009

infact, i pray GOD ,ll forgive anambra state for the atrocities being committed, it,s the volatile center of igbo race, soludo not essempted , bcos while in CBN he killed many souls/families thru his useless policies, today most cbn retirees could not boast of a home of thier own, while people who just came in thru the backdoors are the beneficiaries of all what some people had laboured for years, is,n it wickness, yes, it,s nemesis.

SOLUDO...NO SHAKING..DEM TOO SMALL

Posted by STEPHEN EMEKA OGUGUOM on Nov 01 2009

If I were Soludo, I will insist never to yield to the demands of these faceless kidnappers. At 78, I would imagine Soludo's father should not be afraid to dying taking into consideration what his son has achieved for the country. These idiots thrive on fear. It was for this reason that, during my visit to Nigeria in 3 weeks ago, I declined my parent’s plea that I should stay in a hotel rather than in my father's compound. I told my father that, I rather die than allow the fear of possible kidnap to deprive me of the joy such a wonderful reunion. You cannot allow yourself to be ruled by fear. If he were to be my father, I will never compromise to evil. At the peak of this kidnapping occurrences before I left Australia, I told my wife, assuming I was kidnapped whilst at home, she shouldn't succumb to the demands from this criminals. There is something more important than life and living. Being true to yourself!

Posted by faith on Nov 01 2009

Posted by MYSTIC 4 SQUAD on Nov 17 2009

Soludo,it is a pity that u came all the way from CBN and mess urself up because of election of a thing.See u Soludo, you are a disgrace to human dignity.See what u have caused ur innocent father because of this election of a thing.Soludo, just go back and thinkj of a better thing you will do withyour life or else you will be thing o f a mockery even to the little children. WE ANAMBRARIAN SHOULD BE CAREFUL HOW WE DEHUMANISE OUR SELVES.
