Soludo’s father kidnapped

Print print Email email Share Share

The father of the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and PDP governorship candidate in Anambra State, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has been kidnapped.

The old man was kidnapped around 7pm yesterday at his Isuofia home in Aguata local government area of Anambra State. The kidnappers were said to have "stormed" his house in a Peugeot 406 car, according to sources close to his family.

At the time of the kidnap, Mr. Soludo, was in Abuja working with his lawyers seeking to vacate a Federal Abuja High Court order which gave the directive to INEC to remove his name from the list of candidates contesting the Anambra State governorship elections.

There has been no reaction from Mr. Soludo to the abduction, although sources told NEXT he is working on a public statement.

However, speaking to NEXT, a friend to the aspirant, revealed that no ransom had been demanded, causing political observers to begin to link this development to the recent controversy within the party over Mr. Soludo's candidacy.

Well ordinary Nigerians get kidnapped everyday. Am sure he knows his dad's kidnap has more to do with the internal wranglings in PDP....his nomination without due consultation and process. It's a family/party affair. My only prayer is that they dont harm the oldman or cause him some distress.

This kidnapping "business" is getting out of hand. It is time something is done about it.

Marginalisation! Marginalisation ! Marginalisation ! my foot. We Igbos can't even show ourselves some civility and put the interest of the people over our own and yet we scream of Marginalisation. Bull. That aside. Soludo should have seen this coming and as a learned man, he should have been the one in the position to educate his party men on the need to maintain democratic standards. Instead he joined in subverting the same democracy because it served his interest. He became a benefactor of a different kind of elitism (the one that confers privileges based on educational status, power and name recognition) that is distinct from but also reproduces the same sensibility as the usual moneybag elite phenomenon. Now the rattle snakes they let out of the cage are acting out. Soludo should relinquish the position PDP elite handed to him and work with others to organise a free and fair election where he will try to win fair and square if his status and personality are attractive to the people.

@ Mike lol...I think this kidnapping is really getting out of hand the Federal Government should do something about it or are they waiting for the number one citizen to be kidnapped?

Do I see poetic justice here? Perhaps PDP will be bold enough to confront its demons and tame its monsters now that the father of "The Chosen" is the victim.

@ Uchenna Ogbonna: The kidnapping business is suddenly getting out of hand because the victim is Soludo's father? I didnt know that the kidnapping of other Nigerians and foreigners in the Delta by PDP's "homegrown thugs" was not important.

Fix the country and the kidnappings or "relativesnapping" will stop. If equity and justice reigned in Nigeria the will be no peoplenapping." All the looters in our nation have created a society that can no longer sustain their greed. Any society that has such a huge lower class and a non existent middle class can only breed kidnappers. Having said that if u are a kidnapper and u are reading this shame on you. You deserve to rot in hell. Like wise if u are a looter shame on you too...actually I could go on to say if you are a man/woman that does not live by good ethics then shame on you too

Frankly appalled at so many (supposedly educated) people here justifying the barbarism of kidnapping of an innocent old man who should be enjoying his old age in his own village, and others associating such savagery with "equity and justice" while yet others label the heinous criminals involved as representing "the people". I am beginning to suspect that the quality of Nigeria's crude leadership and political class is broadly reflective of the generality of Nigerians and accordingly that Nigerians probably truly deserve the leadership (or is it rulership?) that it has.

Kidnapping is now the game in Nigeria. Do we have security in this country. Nigerian police can only humiliate innocent citizens while the criminals are free to deliver speech in some sensitive gathering. Technology has grown wide for the nation like Nigeria to afford the e-Security system. Most of our central areas need to installed with surveillance or closed circuit TV as so on to reduce the rate of criminology and to maintain a global security consciousness but the question is; is it going to work with our epileptic power supply? We really have long way to go

It was the aspirants who went to court to get an injunction against holding a PDP state congress in Anambra State (with very little time left to beat INEC's deadline for the submission of candidates) that truncated any hopes of anything resembling a democratic nomination process for the Anambra PDP governorship candidate, so I am unsure why some comments are heaping the blame upon Soludo. Hopefully, these sorts of brutish criminal acts will not deter quality aspirants in Nigeria (including Soludo) from politics and public office, and thereby confine our collective fate and respective futures to sundry criminals, area boys and their sponsors and godfathers. God help us all in this Nigeria.

Our humanity in Nigeria is almost lost! A country where a clearly corrupt party(PDP), with corrupt leaders(BODE GEORGE & CO) can be the majority with no one crying crazy foul is filled with educated cowards. We all know this party does not mean well yet we sit back and do nothing. As much as i do not support the kidnap, it is note worthy that Soludo to us became like the party he purpotedly joined three years ago whilst still in office, got selected through crazy means. A party where James Ibori a convicted criminal used in becoming Governor and has not been arrested yet by the powers that be, a party where former governor igbenideon was said to have stole 50bn but was said to pay 50m fine and had the guts to have his daugthers wedding on National television a wk or two later(NTA) is definately a park of wolves in wolve clothing. As long as nigerians keep quiet, so will the day of our redemption be pushed forward. You may ask what you should do? Be on your knees praying or on the streets saying. God bless Nigeria!

@ Adis. The Igboman has proved over time and beyond all doubts to be his biggest problem. Ignorance (not lack of education or schooling) and greed is perhaps at it's peak in this part of the country. IKEKETEORIE with no regard for the next man or public interest is the name of the game here. How else do you explain the 8 year looting of the Abia coffers by Orji Kalu, the filthy and directionless 8 year tenure of Achike Udenwa in Imo State, the violent and brazen rape of state resources by Nnamani and Mbadinuju in Enugu and Anambra and the cutting off of Ngige's (a guy that seemed to make sence) tenure by his kinsmem. Are the above listed Hausas or Yorubas? How else do you explain the underdevelopment of cities like Aba, Umuahia, Nkalagu, Onitsha; cities tha otherwise have the potential of economic power. The East has all it takes to rule the world. The Gordian Ezekwes, the Ezekeil Izuogus, Damian Anyanwus and the Philip Emeagwalis are a testimony to this. Do a people get the leadership they deserve? May GOD save us from our GREED and LUST FOR QUICK MONEY.

This mess is not about PDP, its the Ubah brothers not allowing the PDP and by extension Nigerian politics to move forward. We have to show them that Anambra is bigger than Ubah brothers. This is a battle of will, the PDP and the good people of Anambra must not give up to terrorism.

This is not new. PDP will always say its an in house matter and should not go to court to get justice. Can any NGO drag PDP to court for 1. That 70% of security problems is caused by PDP internal matters that spill over the society. 2. Their dark rooms constitution that the courts can't reach for justice should contain their matters and don't blame security. 3. That the police should prosecute all the cases that PDP Governors will brand political, am the chief security officer and withdraw to PDP State offices for settlement. 4. Let the courts probe their finances and financiers. I strongly feel the looted funds in this country and CBN exchanges are tracable PDP dark rooms were you can't get justice. Just start the proposal and make contacts available and see revealing contributions.

The various comments (many of which are totally unsympathetic to the plight of the old man) show that as Nigerians we have been de-sensitized to evil. Our senses are assaulted day-in and day-out by stories of corrupt politicians and government officials getting away with their corrupt deeds; looters on the pages of newspapers (and their weekend inserts) spending lavishly, money they didn't earn legitimately; tales of stupendous acquisitions by fools and fraudsters. No wonder we no longer have any sympathy when things like this happen to one of them! The worst part is that this de-humanization means we run the risk of unfortunately becoming like them - "animals in human skin", ala Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

Keep up boys!

The kidnapping of an old man is a symbol of the desperation of those who seek public offices in Nigeria. The act is nothing but a sponsored plot to intimidate Soludo out of Anambra State guber race. The perpetrators believe if they get the PDP guber ticket, it amounts to being a governor. It's a shame.

Posted by OAO on Oct 28 2009

The kidnappers are wicked ooo. Why not kidnap Soludo Jr. instead of Soludo Sr? If Soludo was the one taken away I doubt if many people would care as much as this. Please, they should let Baba Soludo go and carry the former CBN boss away; at least for a week but they should not KILL him ooo. Soludo Jr. has offended too many Anambrians. It is pay back time. He who has many to make others unhappy must see pepper!

I don’t want to believe that Anambra is the problem the Igbo Land has. Are they? I believe and rightly too that it’s high time the Prominent Sons and Daughters of the Igbo Race intervene in the too much ‘drama’ in Anambra State, hence; it’s becoming embarrassing to the entire Igbo People. Have we forgotten the saying in our Beloved Igbo Land that says and I quote “when one finger touches oil, it spreads to the others”.

They should allow Soludo, please Anambra people give him a chance, is it because he dosen't want to have you people as Godfather? he is the best candidate because he can sponsor himself. He will not use the states, quota to repay, settle or share with his Godfather.

In which other state did PDP have this problem of contending with over 43 gubernatorial theives (aspirants). Anambra peoples love for money is worse than Judas Iscariot's own. Ndi Igbo are praying for you to repent or perish.....

There is no point joining issues with some of the meaningless jargons against Prof. Soludo above. Rather, I send him my solidarity and sincere goodwill. Soludo, please do not let anyone dampen your resolve to rescue your fatherland (Anambra) from the rogue Godfathers.

Just yesterday i wrote inter alia: Soludo please listen to the voice of reason, run for your dear life.Dont run for this election. Your life is too precious to be wasted by these wolves. Anambra state is too small and too hot for you.Nigerians still need your intelectual prowess. Just take what is happening now as an act of God and throw in the towel. Soludo please RUN for your precious life.Anambra governorship is not worth the struggle. Imagine kidnapping a 78 years old man who was shot in the eye in 2006. is it worth the risk.Just throw in the towel. This may be the beginning greater attacks that may eventually snuff life out you and ANAMBRA will still be there with wahala.

Posted by Alfa on Oct 28 2009

Really unfortunate. The kidnapping has much if not everything to do with PDP - Papa Deceive Pikin or has it turned to Pikin Deceive Papa. Soludo should know if he has not known how to rescue the old man. My only pity goes to the Old man who must be passing through stress. Well, some of the kidnappers are kind and respectful like my Yoruba brother, and I pray they are.

Posted by Charles on Oct 28 2009

Very wrong political move. kidnapping the old man will only make Soludo more likely to win and gain more support from well meaning Nigerians. Whoever or group harshed and carried out the plan has lost the battle. The law enforcement agents(The SSS) should immediately arrest the key political opponents of Prof. Soludo and make them realise they may be awaiting trial while election would be concluded in Anambra State and the Governor sworn-in. It's obvious these politicians know who the kidnappers are and where to locate them. The kidnappers should be trailed not just in neighbouring Anambra states but also in far aways states like Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers or even Kaduna State.

Chris Uba and co. must realize that politics is not for small-minded men. Scoring political points has nothing to do with joining a member of a political opponent's family in a political difference. If the FG is serious about security in the country especially with regards to kidnapping, the situation in Anambra State should play a good case study and serve as deterrent to anyone who may be nursing these ill and wicked plan come 2011. Electoral reform must start with the political elites first and endorsed by the National Assembly.

The party planned a state congress and the same Uba and co went to court to stop the congress. The Constitution allows for nomination of candidate since a party would have to present a candidate for election or risk exclusion. PDP nominated Soludo, pending the setting aside of the order for congress or primaries to be conducted. All Mr. Uba and Co needed to do was not to fight Mr. Soludo or the Party but to join hands with the party to withdraw all litigations to enable primaries to be conducted and then fight to upturn the nomination of Mr. Soludo using the Polymer Naira note scandal and then the recent Sanusi led banking revolution to indict him.

Yes, what goes around come around, if u pull the tail of the lion it is sure to turn and strike back. I've been begging for these kidnappers to stop attacking the average nigerians or the rich nigerians who are trying to make nigeria work, but instead attack the 5000 strong and elite men who use our resouces for their selffish gains with no remorse. The old man could be innocent for all we know but if u dance with the devil u deserve hell. I hope they deal with him and inturn drive soludo mad. I hope they amplify this form of kidnapping to all levels of government and attack the rich and power politicians. Let them know what we as nigerian people have felt for decades. Let them mourn like the average nigerian mother mourned cos her son could not recieve simply health care for a preventable disease like malaria. Because he couldnt raise the fund to send his daughter to school. Because she prostituted her self to raise funds for her education. Yes, what goes around comes around, U cant blow a hole in the boat and stand at its highest peak and not expect to drown soon. Kidnapping in nigeria has become a billion Dollar business and this is a fact. Nice try Vice city, go grand theft somebodies elses country. Le jui son fey gentlemen, thanks for playing each other.

I am not surprised at all. They once kidnapped their Governor and nothing happened. If only the kidnappers will continue to kidnap the politicians their masters and leave the poor masses alone since the people in authority do not mind about this kidnap issue. It is a shame on this government. Its ashame on the leaders. They know about it and seem to be enjoying it as a weapon otherwise how can it go on and on unchallenged. Don't mind them. If only Soludo knows what he is worth he wouldn't have let himself be drag into the dirty deals of politicians who have come to mess him up. Soludo you are better of without politics. I mourn your choice.

Posted by Mo on Oct 28 2009

Hear this - it is all going according to plan. Who ever told you that the kidnappers are not from the PDP themselves probably Prof Soludo's camp. Now consider this - the father was kidnapped in order to justify arresting majority of opponents who are then clamped into detention pending investigation and they get to remain there while the elections are conducted or they are released a few days to the elections when - surprise, surprise - Father Soludo mysteriously appears and explains that he suffers from amnesia and cannot conviniently remember who or what happened to him. Opponents who are released before the elections are thus unable to contest against Soludo thus making elections for Soludo a walk over. The aggrieved opponents are settled with contracts, positions e.t.c and no one talks about the kidnap anymore. Just take a minute to think about this.

An old frail man has just been kidnapped, from what I gather the second time around--imagine the hell he must be living in now.Imagine the nightmare Soludo himself must be having seeing as this is father. People set your political differences aside and have some sympathy. My prayers and thoughts are with the soludo family at this difficult time

What offence has Soludo committed to have his father kidnapped? Is it anything that the law of man and/or the Law of God Almighty cannot punish. What has happened to our humanity that we actually REJOICE at the kidnapping and dehumanising of AN OLD, DEFENCELESS MAN? Is this how we plan to build this great new NIgeria we all seem to desire but are obviously not prepared to work for?

Posted by Proudly Deltan on Oct 29 2009

The only reason Soludo wants to be a governor at all cost is that it will give him the immunity from prosecution all other politicians get after looting the public coffers. I'm suspicious of this recent development, that Soludo guy may have staged this kidnapping in order to elicit public sympathy. Watch out guys, his old man is cooling off with Y'ardua in Aso Rock.

Aren't we supposed to be setting standards? This is a show of shame! The perpetrators of this act should bury their heads in shame. Are we really fighting for the cause of the common man or for our pockets? The world is watching & posterity will hold us accountable for our actions & inactions

Kidnappers!! I beg you not to harm the innocent old man in any way, but make him feel more comfortable than when he is with his CRIMINAL son Charlse Soludo; but I am encouraging you also not to release him until Charlse Soludo says "NO" from participating for Anambara state Governorship election. And one more thing Mr. & Mrs. Kidnappers, please let your next list be Chris Uba's wife, mother, son, or even his father with the same penalty, I think this will give Anambara state a peaceful years. Chris Uba, at least this will also free you from all accusation too. Or if Charlse Soludo think that Chris Uba is behind this, let him respond to Chris Uba by Kidnapping Chris Uba's wife, mother, son, or even his father this will give Anambara state a justice.

Posted by Poor Nigerian on Oct 29 2009

@ Agrippa, I laugh at the naivety of your suggestion of kidnappers kidnapping anybody in Chris Uba's family -- that is assuming that he is not behind this kidnap. Chris Uba is not the gentleman that Charles Soludo is, and if this had been his dad, Anambra State would have been on fire by now. Anyway, I note that you have already charged, tried and adjudged Mr. Soludo as a "criminal" and obviously support the savage criminality unleashed against his family for the crime of being related to him. Some of you Nigerians so truly deserve the barbarians that rule Nigeria.

Posted by Iwuala Chukwunomnso on Oct 29 2009

Dear Nigerians, This is rather serious and should be taken as such. It has to do with fundamental human right and precisely freedom of movement which the old man has been forcibly denied. If we learn to respect the laws of this land - old and young alike, no matter how lowly or highly placed, such a thing should be considered an abmination and should not be condoned at all. I am neither siding Soludo nor Chris Uba but rather appealling to the voice of reason. It is Soludo today - who is seeking for the post of Governor double-major, it could be Sanusi tommorow. Who knows what they are given at Aso Rock that sometimes twist their brains and make them seek for life the political kingdom. They should let the old man be. Can we for ones confront our problems and stop chasing shadows. Even if the man and the old man are culpable, can we not take the right actions? Let us still remember that two black spots can never turn to white!

The rich man felt untouchable because of fortified properties, bullet-proof cars and high powered securities. thier kids go to school outside the country and thoroughly protected. Unfortunately, the members of their family who are almost innocent of the atrocities have to be, kidnapped, blindfolded and ill-treated. THIS IS A WAKE UP CALL. WE NEED SECURITY, POWER (ELECTRIC) AND OUR BASIC AMENITIES BACK. IT TAKES EVERYBODY'S effort. The common man, the politicians and the law-enforcers. We can do it. The hardest part is when to start.
