Suspension of ASUU strike ends tomorrow

As the two-week suspension of the Academic Staff Union of Universities' (ASUU) strike ends tomorrow, Ukachukwu Awuzie, National President of the Union said: "We are working and not resting. We hope the government will meet the deadline."

The union had gone on an indefinite strike to press for the signing and implementation of the agreement it reached with the government in 2008, which included increased funding of the education sector. On Friday October 09, following the intervention of the governor of Edo Sate, Adams Oshiomhole, ASUU announced a temporary suspension of its strike which lasted for over three months.

This was to allow for further negotiations between the lecturers and the Federal Government.

Speaking with NEXT on telephone yesterday, Mr. Awuzie implied a conclusion to the matter was in sight.

"We need to meet the deadline on Friday. That is what we are working towards. Negotiation is ongoing and we are almost finishing. I am only hopeful and prayerful that I will be able to have something to tell them (the students) before the deadline expires," he said.

Mr. Awuzie declined to state categorically if students of Nigeria's tertiary institutions, many of whom had staged demonstrations over the continued industrial action, would wake up to a pleasant news regarding the issue tomorrow.

"I don't know if it will be pleasant or not, all I know is that I will tell them something. Whether or not it is going to be pleasant, all depends on who is looking at it and what you consider as pleasant or unpleasant," he said.

In another development, the university don reacted to news of a recent advertorial by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry of education which sought applications for teaching jobs in South Africa from Nigerian science teachers not gainfully employed in the country.

"If they have properly staffed our secondary schools with Maths and English or science teachers and we have excess to export, I have no problem with that. There is nothing wrong with Pan-African co-operation. I do not have statistics, but my own understanding is that most of our secondary schools do not have adequate numbers of mathematics teachers which may create more problems for our educational system," Mr. Awuzie explained.

Actually their is no sense or it does not make any sense for asuu to resume now if there agreement with govt. is not signed. Meaning that we should still expect more strike to come latter in the future. It was said that within 1993 and 2009,strike had taken close to four year of our academic section. Government!government !government!!! hope you`re thinking about tomorrow of this nation or you want all the youth of this nation to become indigine and of another nation

asuu better stays on strike till they conclude all negotiations because we can't afford another strike in the educational system this is so bad. what about those that dont have money to travel abroad for school. we need better educational system in Nigeria at least we the young generation deserve it. we would fight for it till the government bends to it our future is far more important than the political chaos of this country. we are the future if the future is destryoed what do we have...???

I am shocked at the spellings of almost every one that has contributed their opinion to this column. It's a shame that our students of today can't even write correct English! Talk about the fallen standards of education!

FG, is this association ASUU! not under you? Why dont the corrupt association be dissolved.Since it was created to distured our educational system in our one and only nation NIGERIA.

My fellow students, why can't we just go down on our knees and pray to God,instead of us condeming n criticizing our leaders.there is nothing u will say that will change the mind of our leaders(asuu n fg).so i will urge each n everyone of us to pray to God cos there is nothing too difficult for him to do.

hope the 53% increase to assu, will affect colleges of education and polytechnics,so that they will not replace assu in abuja negotiation

It a pitty for ASUU and Federal government, they all are toiling with future of Nigerian students, for that, they deserve no compliment for their failure to agree.

The way to solve a problems is prayer; let us put the FG into prayer for change. So that they can improve our educational system for the betterment of tommorow.

Life is always not a bed of roses. We face challenges in every aspect of our lives, be it spiritual, financial or educational. The ASUU strike should not cause pandemonium, but should serve as a lesson to every meaningful Nigerian to which we should go back to the drawing board and correct our mistakes. Please, Fellow Nigerians Let's adjust the way we react towards Political, Financial or Educational issues and always think about a solution to our problem. Thank You. Nigeria will be Great Again !!! - bennswift@gmail.com
