Opposition criticises PDP’s choice of Soludo

Print print Email email Share Share

The manner in which the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Chukwuma Soludo, emerged as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for Anambra State’s gubernatorial election and his acceptance by the Independent National Electoral Commission, despite the expiration of set deadline, is an indication that the 2011 general elections will not be transparent, the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) said on Sunday.

The group of opposition parties said Mr. Soludo is not the popular choice of the PDP members in Anambra State and will, therefore, be holding an illegitimate mandate if he eventually wins the February 6, 2010, governorship election in the state.

The CNPP, in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Osita Okechukwu, called on the National Assembly to, as a matter of urgent national importance, fasttrack genuine electoral reform in order to save the nation’s democracy.

The statement said: “The sordid outcome and failure of PDP to conduct free, fair, and transparent gubernatorial primary, in spite of the deployment of soldiers, serving governors, ministers and the Speaker, is that Professor C.C. Soludo emerged the candidate of PDP without the genuine votes of members of the PDP, but that of President Umaru Musa Yaradua and fixers in the party.

PDP’s chronic phobia for election, even in this instance, is painful not only because it signposts 2011 election looming anarchy, but the main objective of intra-party primary to enhance and restore the inalienable rights of party members to choose the candidate of their choice and purify the electoral process, had been violently atrophied by party bosses, fixers and their machine.

“Consequently, Professor C.C. Soludo had wittingly or unwittingly violated the PDP Constitution as a beneficiary of an illegitimate mandate; hence PDP and their surrogates like Professor Maurice Iwu pose great threat of denying the good people of Anambra State the opportunity to elect a governor of their choice, under a free and fair election template. CNPP thus contends that the fundamental principle of democracy is substantially flawed in Anambra State PDP gubernatorial primary, for the PDP Constitution was violated and INEC 6pm deadline violently disobeyed.”

Phobia for elections

The group said that lots of Nigerian democrats had predicted that the Anambra State PDP gubernatorial primary would show-case free, fair and transparent election, but that the prediction never came to pass.

“To us, democracy is a journey not a destination. The violation and disobedience of INEC 6pm deadline of October 9, 2009, and lack of internal democracy from the so-called largest political party in Africa calls for a great concern; as robust practice of internal democracy and obedience to INEC rules are essential ingredient to electoral rule of law and procedure for free, fair and transparent elections. CNPP highly objects to the late submission made by the PDP; for it is too early in the day for Professor Maurice Iwu to start bending the rules in favour of PDP as an axe man. We will contest this to the highest court in the land.”

The CNPP said that it has always maintained that the ruling party’s phobia for elections is synonymous with their inordinate ambition to transform Nigeria into a one-party state and rule for 60 years.

Soludo, by his acceptance of his "selection" as PDP gubernatorial candidate in Anambra state, has chosen the wide path to self-destruction. He is currently dancing carelessly at the edge of a precipice. He will soon embark on a swift terrifying journey to his political death. He has little or no value for his reputation. The lure of political office has blindfolded him.

This is just an indication of what 2011 election would be like.Anambra people shine your eyes well and never allow any imposition again.

We have got no other choice to reclaim the the jugular of this nation from these usurpers than to take to our gauntlets, be helmeted and be ready to bike through the mountaineous rocks to fight with actions and not words to unsit them from our common stools.

Ples, make una leave soludo alone he is the only one that can stand peter Obi ,and PDP want's the for anabarian's that was why soludo was choosen, to stop Andy Uba.

SOLUDO SOLUDO SOLUDO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The fate of a front runner !!! Hang in there my bros !! Bad belle is worse than swine flu !

Posted by Observer on Oct 12 2009

Soludo may not be the best candidate as claimed by CNPP. But based on his track record, PDP believes he is the best candidate that can deliver Anambra state, I agree too especially when you consider that the UBAs(Kidnappers) have created more enemies than friends over the years.

Posted by Ogundele Kazeem on Oct 12 2009

When will Nigerians learn to accept defeat? Just tell me any other aspirant that matches Soludo"s credential, his CBN flaws notwithstanding.

Posted by Ndi Okafor on Oct 12 2009

Well, what can one say. Let's hope he scales through the Polymer bribery scandal allegations, or else... Na koko for Anambra state

Posted by Okey Nwafor on Oct 12 2009

I am utterly amazed at the above responses. In fact, these emotional reactions are testament to the collective feelings of dismay and despondency every Nigerian share. They are testimonies to the fact the Nigerians have lost 'HOPE' in that wobbling edifice called 'Nigeria.' I understand no iota of confidence is left in the illusory cravings for incorruptible, 'uncorruptible,' peaceful, judicious mankind in the space called 'Nigeria.' But my question is, 'what is Nigeria?' A friend of mine, a Nigerian (who lives with me in the same hostel here in South Africa)is unpretentious in his dismissal of imminent hope that can rise from what one can call 'Nigeria.' He simply doesn't believe that Nigeria is a country but believes that Nigeria much like Somalia is a space inhabited by a group of dangerous morally bankrupt gangsters who frighten to death anyone who dares them. Na wao! I mean think of the Anambra PDP convention and the internecine and fratricidal hostilities and then understand what i mean when I say 'frightening everyone to death.' I was not in Nigeria when all these 'PDP Nollywood' were taking place but I can feel the impact of the Nollywood here in South Africa. If I can feel frightened in the diaspora I imagine how people at home would feel. I perceive the rotten odour of evil being emitted from evil men in Anambra state. I have personally lost hope in the whole system. WAKE UP! NIGERIANS WAKE UP! DON'T WAIT TO DIE BEFORE YOU KNOW DEATH IS LURKING BY THE CORNERS!

CNPP should forget about the process PDP used in foisting a gubernatorial candidate. They are aware of the court injunction one of the party aspirants obtained, thereby making it almost impossible for the party to meet the deadline. CNPP should rather concentrate on strategies on how to humble Soludo and PDP in the election. Except if they are telling us that they see the former central bank governor unformidable. If they put their acts together and defeat him and the party in February, it will give us the impetus to ensure that there is total change come 2011 general elections and that PDP is consigned to dust bin of history. This will be more honourable than looking for flimsy excuses to blame any body or institution at the end of the day. As for Soludo I pity him so much. I foresee a situation where PDP and never do well politicians will mess him up. All the accolades he has been acquiring will come to naught by the time they finish with him. But its not yet late, he can still throw in the towel and tell them he is not interested. I don’t want to believe that he is over ambitious; he has achieved so much at his tender age. SOLUDO please run for your dear life.

When was the election primaries in Anambra? Consensus candidacy is undemocratic! Please allow the people or PDP registered voters in Anambra State to choose their leaders and representatives in Nigeria.

CNPP have little business in this

Poor Dora a woman whom we thought was the face of New Nigeria that is corruption free. Seeing her in the company of Ogbulafor is nauseating. WERE ARE THE ROLE MODELS IN THIS SOCIETY?

Posted by Igbo Boy. on Oct 12 2009

Whats wrong in Soludo's selection. If Nigerians really wants a change, then the right people for the job need to be installed to move the country forward. Soludo is the right man for the job. He is proven. He did well with the economy and helped revamped the system to the nations advantage. You guys over there need to change your mentality and see the bigger picture. I wonder why someone that did so well for the country would have to be critizised to this extent. You guys have forgotten how messed up and valueless the naira and the Nigerian economy was before this guy took over. Just because sanusi is implementing and trying out his own ideas does not mean that they would work in 8 yrs time. And for him to be critising his elsewhile the way hes been doing also shows his lack of proffessionalism. We wait and see.

Posted by siddonlook on Oct 12 2009

Wait a minute folks. Can anyone remember the primaries that (s)elected Fashola as the AC candidate for Lagos? It was certainly not democratic, but the rest they say is history. Maybe, just maybe, Soludo can be the next "Fashola" in Anambra State; if he can defeat Ngige and Obi.

Posted by AKU EBILISI on Oct 12 2009

SOLUDO NO MIND DEM......THIS IS OUR TIME....GREAT ANAMBRARIANS

Posted by Mike Kennedy on Oct 12 2009

The PDP at all cost now recycles themselves into all position just to make sure they rule Nigeria for 60 years as they say. Very soon they will change Nigeria name to PDP because right now, nothing matters in Nigeria if you are not a PDP man. This prevailling injustice all over within their own party portrays how they run NIGERIA AFFAIRS. PLEASE may be before God saves us it is time we need Gold Coast experience. Stop patronising Nigerian that Civil rule is the best in Nigeria situation, military eg Idiagbon/Buhari is much better than PDP PAPA DECEIVE PIGKIN.

Posted by GREEN9JA on Oct 12 2009

I just want to say the problem is not Nigeria but its people that run Nigeria. We Nigerians are good, peacefull, progressive, and loving people but because of our so called politicians we call leaders (but not)selfish interested decided to turn us against each other. Everythings that is not working in Nigeria today was intentionally ran to the ground for their own interest, mainly to get rich,to oppress,to create fear, and to rigg election. Eg NEPA, NITEL, NNPC,NRC

Mr Dogood, what has Ogbulafor done that his presence is nauseating. what is wrong with people? What is your problem with Dora? Please stop all the stupidity! It is getting ridiculous already.
