ASUU will end strike within a week, Oshiomhole says

Print print Email email Share Share

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has said the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities have reached an agreement on how to quickly resolve the ongoing strike by university lecturers.

Mr. Oshiomhole spoke in Abuja on Saturday at a press briefing shortly after a meeting between the government and the union.

He said the union would hold a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting and announce the suspension of the strike in the shortest possible time.

"Both parties have all agreed that once ASUU suspends the strike, the remaining issues would be resolved in a very short time -- not more than a week, so that the university system can return to normalcy," the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the governor as saying.

"We have had an exhaustive discussion with both government and ASUU and all the key issues have been well taken care of," Mr. Oshiomhole said.

He said both parties had reached an understanding that the union would call off the strike any moment.

The union's President, Uwazie Ukachukwu, said that the suggestions made at the meeting would be presented to its national executive committee for consideration "within three days".

In his remarks, the Minister of Education, Sam Egwu, said all the parties involved in the dispute had made progress towards a resolution.

Mr. Egwu commended Mr. Oshiomhole for his intervention in the matter.

He also thanked the union's leadership for its show of understanding, expressing confidence that the dispute would be permanently resolved.

"I believe that after this period, we shall witness rapid growth and development so that the desires of ASUU, that of government and all Nigerians would be achieved," Mr. Egwu said.

"It is also my belief that at the end of every crisis, there must always be a positive development and that is what would happen to Nigeria in this situation."

Thank you Mr. Oshiomhole for your intervention,i sincerely hope the issue is resolved within a week like you said.We will be waiting anxiously for the outcome.

We thank God that this issue is gradually coming to an end, because it has brought a form of reproach to our educational sector to the outside hope. We just hope we will be able to prove our critics wrong, after everything. We just hope this mutual agreement b/w FG and ASUU, would be for the best. I appeal to both parties to do all they can to compensate the wasted months. Long live FG, long live ASUU, and long live NIGERIA. ITS WELL!

Good news! But "within a week" sounds nebulous. Will the strike be called off within a week this year or next? Pardon my skepticism. This week has been a good one. Peace, however fragile, is returning to the Niger Delta. Hopefully PHCN will crank up some megawatts. Not bad for a 49-year old (excuse the cynicism). All said, God bless Naija!

Adams Oshiomhole thank you very much indeed. May you live for ever! This is the best news so far and a worthy independence gift to students, who have suffering because of a rift not caused by them, and parents whose wards have been idling away at home. Now, we expect sanity in our education sector because only that will guarantee our nation's development. Kudos to all who have participated in the struggle!!!!

There is on gain saying the fact that this is actually a good piece of news for the Nigerian students who have been made to suffer to a high extent of frustration and psychological trauma. Comrd. Adams Oshomole has shown that he is a real unionist to the core. His quick intervention has inevitably scored him a high political and social point. I hope this is not a cosmetic remedy that will collapse in on time. Government should invest massively in education. My fellow students, this is time for us to show that we are different from this generation of corrupt leaders by being upright in our dealings. God bless NIGERIA

Well this is good news that should be recieved with a lot of trepidation.the saying 'where two elephants fight the grasses suffer' has indeed held in this bitter faceoff between asuu and the fedral government.pardon my skepticism and pessimistic demeanour-but i detected a weak tone of conclusion to this issue since the strike is still to be suspended instead of forging a final solution.as students we have suffered enough and the elephants have forgotting that the grass is their means of survival.what happens when this grasses are killed?

For some reasons, i'm inclined not to be so ecstatic. If the reasons for the strike are not adequately addressed(or a clearcut plan towards same drawn) the past 3months have a total waste of everybody's time and the future of Nigeria's universities is in hopeless jeopardy. That, to me, is more important than a speedy resolution of an ill-managed strike.

The government of Yar' Adua should be more proactive and sensitive to the plight of Nigerian. Thats is why he is on the driving seat. Before now it would have been glaring that you needed a team of the likes of Com. Oshiomole to bring this bottleneck negiotiation and the unreliable tendencies of Yar'Adua govt to a logical agreement. There people of substances and respects all over this country. Posted by Chris Onyishi on Oct 04 2009

It is healthy news. But the fact that ASUU has to suspend its strike before things are tidied up means that ASUU has chickened out again and this means that we have not come to the end of strikes in a very near future. I did say - sometime ago - that you can, easily, bring the monkey out of the jungle but you may never bring the jungle out of the monkey. Knowing the mentality of our leaders, or rulers, and their culture of not respecting agreements - and in view of the fact that ASUU has held on for so long - I sincerely do not think ASUU will get, all or even half of, what it bargained for. And the more ASUU compromises, the more they will be treated as underdogs. There is no reason a minister such as Egwu should be more comfortable than a University teacher. And if Gov. Oshiomole, once a labor chief himself, will broker a truce where labor will be disadvantaged then we will say something is wrong with people who get to government positions in Nigeria. The effect of not giving education and education workers what is due for it is the continuous production of half baked graduates and this is not in the interest of a nation that touts any kind of vision, be it 2010, 2020, 3030, etc. My sense is that if ASUU has stayed this far, they should keep pushing until they get all that is good for them to be able to produce first class graduates which is one of major factors necessary for our national development. If our kids will suffer another 4 months stay at home and come back finally to a better learning environment, the sacrifice is worth it. Is it not incredible that in a country where the current President and the Education mister were once, and may still be, members of the academia in the nation’s highest institutions of learning, we are witnessing almost 16 weeks of non academic activities? And instead of resigning, a minister of education who has failed in his responsibility to bring about harmony in the sector was celebrating his wedding anniversary when his erstwhile colleagues are languishing in agony. Hear him out, "I believe that after this period, we shall witness rapid growth and development so that the desires of ASUU, that of government and all Nigerians would be achieved". We need four months for this when he was once a teacher. One would have thought that his becoming an education minister would have been a blessing to his colleagues and his, once cherished, profession. I am ashamed at the attitude of human beings, mostly black Africans, when once they get to positions of power.

Posted by Akin(lautech) on Oct 04 2009

I think its a good development for the Nigerian students but im still skeptical about all this because i dont see a promise fufilling nigerian government as this issue might be postponed to another administration thereby causing fresh problems then. I only hope ASUU can make then sign necessary agreements now or esle...

Thank God for the intervention of Governor (Edo State). As for my own opinion i dont realy see any big deal of calling off the strike, i just want the agreement to be implemented. In fact take the case of my school Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike Abia State, the classrooms are dilapidated, outdated, and a class of about 100 student you see over 1700 students in the class. A class that is supposed to commenced 8 o;clock when you came 6:30 in fact you are absolutely late. You will find your self outside, there are no PAS (public address system) just a few lecture halls and at the same time the lecturers doesn't mind setting heaven and earth as there exams/test. A university that pretends to be God's own University where in a department; a student that sees his script will first be interested in the no. of carry overs instead of the grade, these lecturers that demands high amount of salary or increase in educational infrastructure should also consider that there type of duty is not the same as that of politician, a politician can be drunk and still deliver a speech, but a lecturer can not be drunk a still teaches. They said they want increase in welfare package fine, do you want to come to class with beer tommy? or driving hummer jeep and then that will give you the ability to fail student....

This goes to Mr Sam Egwu, I dispute your statement that at the end of every crisis there must be a development, should we in the first place go through this crisis over and over again, why haven't there be any developmemt(s) ever since we have been experiencing this strike issues for as long as Nigeria have been existing, hope this doesn't repeat its self again.

I have always known you to be a very capable man, I only have two Rulers i respect in Nigeria which are Governor Oshiomole of Edo state and Governor Fashola of lagos state, they are good example of a true leader, may you both live longgggggggggg, AMIN.
