Security officers detain El Rufai’s family members

Print print Email email Share Share

Security officers detained family members of Nasir El-Rufai, the former minister of the Federal Capital Territory, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, in Lagos, on Monday, according to the account of Mr. El-Rufai.

Four of them, Asia El–Rufai (his wife), and their three children, Ahmed (nine), Bilkisu (seven), and Mustapha (three) were returning from Dubai where they had gone to celebrate the Muslim Eid el-fitr festival when “[the] State Security Service (SSS) invited them for dialogue and held them for an hour,” Mr. El Rufai said in a telephone interview.

No official responses could be obtained at press time, and efforts to reach the Minister of Information, Dora Akunyili, failed. She did not respond to text messages either.

Mrs. El Rufai declined comments on the matter, but her husband told NEXT that “they came here to Dubai to spend the Sallah holidays with me. So, they were here for about eight to 10 days. They left Dubai this morning. When they got to the airport, the immigration officials told them to wait after collecting their passport and returned the passport to them after about 30 minutes.”

Speaking more on the ordeal, the former minister said, “by that time, their luggage had arrived, they got their luggage and were about to leave when somebody from [the] SSS accosted them and asked my wife to hand over the passports to him. And she handed over the passports to him. He took the passports, and took my wife and the children and they were made to wait about an hour without any explanation.”

Mr. El-Rufai said he was “naturally concerned about this development” which he characterised as a “slippery slope on the political landscape when family members can be held hostage to resolve political differences.”

His words: “This is unprecedented and very strange and it shows the extent to which this administration can go just to harass and traumatise anyone related to anyone that is supposedly opposed to them. It’s really sad, and there is no basis for it whatsoever whether in law or in our administrative procedures. It is just a reflection of how petty this government has become that even wives and children are part of the political persecution that has been unleashed on me.”

Mr. El-Rufai said the State Security Service officials offered no explanation.

“They were not given any reason. They were just made to wait while the officer said he is trying to get clearance from Abuja. Nobody gave them any reason. By the time they collected the passport, immigration had already stamped the passport anyway. And so there was no issue, and no explanation was given” he said.

Speaking on his next line of action, Mr. El-Rufai said “my lawyers are already filing a petition against the government on the matter of the denial to renew my passport. We are filing a suit on that so we will now add this among the reliefs that we want. We want the courts to stop the Federal Government from violating our constitutional rights. I have the right to a passport because I am a Nigerian. [President] Yar’Adua cannot cancel my nationality,” he said.

The Nigerian High Commission in London on September 15 refused to renew Mr. El-Rufai’s passport, saying, it was acting on orders from Abuja.

The former minister is also on a wanted persons list posted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC which filed an eight count charge against him in May. The charges which made claims of abuse of office, corruption, and gratification are before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Mr. El-Rufai has refuted the allegations saying that they are politically motivated because of his opposition to the government of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

YARADUA SHOULD LEARN FROM OBASANJO'S MISTAKE WITH ATIKU THAT PETTINESS DOES NOT PAY....LET HIM KEEP ON PROTECTING IBORI WHILE HOUNDING RIBADU AND EL-RUFAI ...HE MIGHT REALISE TOO LATE THAT THIS COUNTRY DOES NOT BELONG TO HIM

Posted by Anthony Ugbu on Sep 29 2009

We are very much aware that your paper was established to promote your friends and sponsors like el Rufai and Nuhu Ribadu while at the same time vilify President Yar'Adua, his family members and associates. This scheme will surely fail. While el Rufai was in government, he was lord unto himself. He demolished recklessly houses belonging to people from the South East and South South. He advised President Obasanjo to send troops to the Niger Delta to carpet bomb the militants. Today he is wailing because his family was delayed at the airport for thirty minutes. If he is a man that he claims he is, he and his co-travellers should return home to face charges as he was the mastermind behind the trails of politicians because of his blind ambition. He should not allowed ignorant nigerians in diaspora lead him astray.

How the mighty have fallen? A whole El Rufai. Sadly, he does not have my sympathy.Even him was very petty whilst in government. What goes around comes around ?

@ anthony ugbu i am sad that at your age you are still a tribalist. elrufai demolished mosques, churches and houses of people from every part of nigeria.he even demolished the house of justin muhammed bello who later died of heart attack. but everybody that was in abuja knows that elrufai did a good job.the issue of niger delta militant, try to be realistic. i am not defending him, but sometimes we need to be less tribaLISTIC, so that we may see things from a different perspective.

Haba! No! No! No! I totally and completely dislike El-Rufai. I deactivated my facebook profile after I saw him on the social network. El-Rufai was part of the brain behind the Obasanjo's lawlessness-he presided over the political demolishion of opponents. He was even touted as possibly taking over from Obasanjo. I still consider the expose that El-Rufai published on President Umaru Yar'Adua as being in bad state and petty in consistence with the character of the midget. I know that crooks like Hajia Amina Salihu are still helping to help El-Rufai sabotage the country from within-while midget is all over the West using foreign media to disparage fahter land, condemning the very system he helped build. But, Haba! No! His family should be left out of all these. Three year old Mustapha El-Rufai has not offended the country in any way even if his father alotted him plots of land when he was minister.

I am in absolute agreement with Anthony Ugbu. El-Rufai sowed the wind, and is now set to reap the whirlwind. I personally witnessed his crass arrogance and insolence to a fellow minister who was only jesting with him. We are all witnesses to his massive wickedness against the masses during his demolition madness. The difference between him and Ribadu is that whereas Ribadu was genuinely incorruptible and sincere in his desire to rid Nigeria of corruption, El-Rufai was busy enriching himself and his cronies while pretending to fix the Abuja master plan. If you have met Ribadu, you will observe that he is a genuinely humble man, whereas El-Rufai is an arrogant git.

I have no sympathy at all for El-Rufai.He ruled with impunity while in Abuja though we cannot take some modest achievements in Abuja from him-the gardens et al.He used his position arbitrarily against people, now let him feel the weight of power he once wielded on others.

Rufia, Ibori, Ribadu, etc etc. Nothing makes sense to me. But I do know that Nigeria is going down hill. How is Yar Adua going to fix that. Those who abused power in the past should be held accountable. But the country does not have to stand still looking backward while time goes by. Let us spend a better part of our energy creating our future rather than hunting crickets and ants.

Mallam Nasiru sanu de aiki, Eid Mubarak! I sympathise with you on the ordeal your family had to face, but i must tell you a few home truths. Yes you did good as FCT Minister and like every human being you are not perfect, but you screwed big time in the following regard: 1)your behavior and utterances towards the end of Obj's tenure were appaling, you should NEVER have become one of his attack dogs, 2) Your actions/deeds as regards the sale of federal government houses was at best dishonest tending towards criminal, you must answer for it and last but not least, if you played an active role to bring Umar Musa yar'adua to become our President, then you asked for whatever you are getting just now. Still, i sympathise with your family.

Life oh life. I wish we take lessons from other people's experiencies. I refused to join issues with anybody on this board but only wish to say that we should try as much as we can to remove the specks from our eyes and see things they are: fairly and objectively. That way we can begin to contribute to our little quotas in the development in our dear nation Nigeria. As a former head of state said "we have no other country but Nigeria................".

Posted by Damian"ochendo" chigozie on Sep 29 2009

@ Anthony, you are just been nasty and ridiculous, your utterances is riddled with sentiment and bias.It was not in el Rufai's position to advice president Obasanjo on where troops are to be deployed, i say this based on the fact that el Rufai is the minister of FCT not defense and the other was that obasanjo was ex-Army general, as such well vast in military and defence issues and does not need el Rufai's opinion. El Rufai is not my favourite, i also desire for him to be prosecuted but the way of going about it should be through the Rule of law not as it is been pushed now, how can you justified the unjust detention of those young kids based on the offence that their dad committed.I still see many demons that possessed obasanjo in Yar'adua because out their desperation they do the same thing. All Government officers that have left office should be prosecuted for the excesses or gross misconduct their did why in office and it shouldn't be for select few.

el-Rufai amuses me,if he and rubadu has a case with mogeria and nigerians he should go home and deal with it,rather than make a spectacle of themselves around world capitals castigating their own country.what is different from what ribadu did to political office holders only 20months ago.without defending anybody, whatever happenned to innocent until proven guilty.until you and your fellow travellers stop the degradation of nigeria, like the one schedulled for DC tommorrow, you and whatever you stand for is evil to us.

Posted by Labalaba on Sep 29 2009

Whether you like El-Rufai or not, Yar'Adua cannot cancel his Nigerian citizenship. The Nigerian passport is El-Rufai's inalienable right and it must be renewed. Remember when Wole Soyinka landed France without a passport? Your views that El-Rufai made Obasanjo lawless is imbecilic to say the least. Let Yar'Adua live to his billing of the ruse of law, sorry, rule of law.

Posted by Olayinka Oguntuase on Sep 29 2009

Oppositions have been in existence from the creation of the World. If the present administration now decides to stoop so low as using opposition's family members to get at them, then the character of this administration(whose head claims to believe in the rule of law)should seriously be questioned. However, that does not say El- Rufai should not face the law if he has erred. He should allow the law to say he is guilty or otherwise-El-Rufai should come back and fight from the courts.

He mademistakes in the way he implemented his duties, but he gave us a city that used to be world class, until his more nigerianizedsuccessors came along and made abuja like oshodi or dugbe. Nigerians are petty and small minded o. Pls separate his flaws and the system he worked in from his exceptional sense of duty and efficiency.

I'm not quite sure a 30-minute chat at the airport, without any physical or other harassment or abuse, qualifies as an "ordeal" or a "detention." If the government intended to persecute El-Rufai's lovely family, I'm sure they could have been more imaginative than examining their passports for a few minutes.

1. I can never condone callousness of Govt. to the very Citizens it's sworn to protect. 2. Mr. Minister- El-Rufai, might have gone about sanitising Abuja in sometimes 'Harsh manner', but truth be told, sanitise he did! 3. The President has no right whatsoever to deny Mr. El-Rufai his passport, any attempt to do that is tantamount 'crude & insensible illiteracy', owing to his C.V., i know that is not the case with our C-in-C. 4. Lastly, anyone who derives pleasure from the misfortune of Mr. El-Rufai should do so cautiously, 'cos this is Naija; it very well could be happening to you tomorrow! i would honestly wish Mr. Minister all the best!!! P.S. On behalf of the people of this Beautiful Nation, i would like to offer an unreserved apology to Mrs. El-Rufai & the Kids!

Well said Ayo Abuja. I think that in the Nigeria of today we should try to be better critics of our leaders as well as of ourselves. El Rufai was able to wade through the government system of that day, make plans to sanitize abuja, get those plans implemented against the odds that were stacked against him, and survive all the villification from all angles including from his own boss - Obasanjo. He has my support wherever he is at the moment. He has moved far ahead of so many of our so called leaders and should be commended. Can he be compared to the 90% of our so called "law makers" who sit like fat cats lapping up ALL the cream and not making good use of the power they have been granted , but for a transitory period. Nigerians, please look at yourselves and work hard towards improvement.

Posted by James Ortese on Sep 29 2009

@Kochie Mbubo you sure are right. If the SSS wanted to take the family of Mr demolition through an ordeal i'm sure a 30 min delay would be laughable.Let El Rufai stop insulting the sensibilities of Nigerians by making what happened a big deal and come back and answer to his crimes. For the love of God i my wife and my three month daughter were detained at a stop and search point in makurdi for hours but well i'm anobody so it did not make headlines. Why should the government renew his passport?is it to make it easier for him to evade persecution? If he thinks he is innocent of the charges against him let come back and tell us his tales fools like us would listen to him.Graned he has some strong points but he committed a lot of crimes to he has to face the music like a man.Yar Adua is one of the greatest benefactors of his goevernment or rather the government he so defended so i fail to see why Yar Adua hates him so much except to shed of excess baggage.

Do you by any chance recall just how many 'happy families' watched their properties rot under rubble 'cos you ignored the courts?........so you have regard for 'Family'? I've been kept more than one hour at the airport just waiting for my luggage, flight, food, traffic, you name it....what are you complaining about? Not used to being an ordinary Nigerian eh! - bet this wouldn't have happened with escorts and protocol!!

Posted by Akin on Sep 29 2009

el Rufai is a puny, little man with an over-exaggerated ego. The abuse of office he exhibited while in office confirms the truism that a man should never be promoted beyond his competence. However, all that cannot justify the extension of Yar'Adua's venom to his family.

Posted by Toyin Adekunle on Sep 29 2009

This government is a fascist one. Yar'Adua needs to be reminded that we are not ina police state, we are in a democracy. If he finds himself on stolen/rigged Presidential seat; he should mind the way he behaves. If he has any score to settle with El Rufai, he should go to court instead of resulting to self help and jungle justice style. Yar'Adua, you don't have any right under our constitution to deny any Nigerian a passport. All Nigerians are entitled to having a passport, it is RIGHT and not priviledge. You are not more Nigerian than other Nigerians. Respect yourself because we are fed up of you. You are taking governance to the most ridiculous level. Yar'Adua, what Nigerians want from you is to profer solutions to our so many national problems instead of pursuing somebody that contributed his own quota to Nigerian development. If he has committed any crime, then, take him to court and stop this kinderpaten roforofo fight.

Afterall, your former boss(Obasanjo)humiliated his oppo- nents in which you can not claim not being part of.In- fact, you played active role. But i have a solace for you, dont worry about the "Van- Damme" of today, its their turn and that would lapse in at most, six years time. The best way you can retaliate is to warm-up for 2015 presidency and contest for Yardua seat. Believe me, you can win.

"Those whom the gods want to destroy they first make them mad." The desperation of the YarAdua administration is already reflected in how its prime promoters--the Iboris and Aandokas--are running amok pretending to be fighting back on behalf of themselves and YarAdua. As Ribadu would say, corruption would always fight back fiercely. We are witnesses to this administration's slides to military-type madness of denying citizens passport and tackling the opposition with the "ruse of law". What justice can El-rufai and ribadu ever hope to get in a country where the chief law officer is the most corrupt attorney-general in Nigerian history--worse than even Abacha's Clement Apamgbo! People lets set aside our prejudices and work to punish mindless rogues like Ibori who remain power brokers in our dear homeland. The stunt, even reverse Nigeria's growth and sow poverty in the land. Next some people are now leaving the rogues and attack newspapers that report their excesses. Na wa o. Looks like the agents have also resorted to infiltrating comments pages of newspapers online as part of the new Ibori and Aandoka media war. Arise O compatriots!!!!

Government officials KNOW that there are lots of CANCERS like you in the country so they harras, humiliate and detain innocent civilians at will KNOWING that the SAD MAJORITY like you will neither question nor condemn such despicable acts. I don't know what the head of the El Rufai family has done but I do KNOW that his wife and children had nothing to do with it and should not be harassed for no reason. Any human WITH a brain will also find it a tad bit ODD the man has SUPPOSEDLY been placed on the MOST WANTED list YET the PRESIDENT has ORDERED the embassy not to RENEW his PASSPORT so he can come HOME to answer to the charges he's accused of. No one is also questioning HOW the president is ABLE to DENY one of their CITIZENSHIP. These are all evidence supporting the dominating presence of ANARCHY in Nigeria and it will continue as long as the rest of us remain silent. Nigeria desperately NEEDS a REVOLUTION !!! We need to wipe the SCUM that have ruled us for decades. The same names and ideals recycled under the guise of regimes and democratic tenures. The same names have surfaced within different power exchanges. This country belongs to US not these ANIMALS who are driven by greed and who lack any sense of shame because WE the CITIZENS do not hold them accountable for their unspeakable TRANSGRESSIONS! 49yrs of "INDEPENDENCE" and the vast majority live in ABSOLUTE POVERTY while a few thousands reap off the proceeds of our natural resources.
