Students want education minister sacked

Students of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) yesterday staged a peaceful protest within the state capital, urging the sack of the Minister of Education, Sam Egwu for failing to end the face-off between the federal government and various striking teachers’ unions.

The students also threatened to stage their protests in all the 18 local governments in the state to compel the government to resume negotiations with the university workers.

Armed with various placards, the students who barricaded the inter-state Ilesha road and marched round some major streets said Mr Egwu has failed in his responsibility. The students specifically complained of the nonchalant attitude of the minister in resolving the crisis.

Addressing journalists at Adegbola junction, the Student Union President of the FUTA, Oluwaseun Enikanosaye said they support the striking unions whose demands were just and aimed at lifting the standard of university education across the country.

Too long

“It is exactly three months and one week when this strike started. This is caused by the insensitivity and inaction of our government towards the yearnings and agitations of Nigerian students and the future of the nation,” Mr Enikanosaye said.

“Nigerian students believe that silence is not an option and that is why we are taking this giant stride in fighting against injustice and oppression by our government” he added. The student leader said since the nation’s independence in 1960, it has witnessed poverty, high level of corruption and underdevelopment.

He urged parents and guardians to join hands with lecturers and students to fight against government’s failure to address the lecturers’ demands through peaceful protests and called for the immediate reinstatement of the seven sacked lecturers at the Oyo State College of Education by the Oyo State government.

Neglect

The National President of National Association of Ondo State Students, Temidayo Temola condemned the poor funding of the education sector, which he said was far below the UNESCO standard.

“Nigeria, though big in land mass and population, cannot be referred to as a great nation because the destinies of the youths who are expected to be the leaders of tomorrow have been mortgaged through neglect of the education sector,” he said.

He urged the federal government to give priority to education, as it was the only way the nation can move forward.

“We believe that the priority should be in the following order of importance: education followed by power, agriculture and security and health,” he said.

The PDP government has failed Nigeria. Our President traveled all the way to Saudi Arabia to witness the opening of a University; while back home our Universities are close down due to ASSU strike. Oga Presidio put out the fire in your back yard next time, before helping your neighbor out.

Thank God the students have finally joined the struggle. All the ministers their children schooled abroad, so they are not bothered about what happens here to our own children who are in public schools.

The education sector of nigeria has been jeopatise with no remedy, coutesy of nigerian govt.in colaboration with bad eggs of the society, so called politicians. I hope they are nown satisfied. I think for any nation to develope, needs education as a steping stone. It is the greatest empowerment for growth and development. Any nation that ignore this fact is doomed for the opposite. I am in full support of the ASUU strike, they are agitating & demanding for that which rightfully belongs to them but allegedly been deprived of i.e increament in salary. Yes, if the illitrate local govt. chairmen, councellors have higher pay then i think the lecturers deserve much more worthwhile. Certainly what is good for the goose is eqauly the best for the gander. Those requesting the sack of the education minister should have a rethink, as it would not help matters. The minister for education should not in any form betray the trust invested on him i.e by collecting bribe to pivert justice thereby neglecting the yeinings of his co-workers. Finally i will like to urge all asundary to take this as a spiritual battle and pray consistently to ALMIGHTY GOD for solutions. Definately HE will answer us.

This is now beyond a joke... How can the govt just stand back whilst students are out of lecture halls for three whole months???!! SHAME ON YOU, FG. These ministers insist on leaving Nigeria as the laughing stock of the world, yet they expect foreigners to invest here. Yet you get upset with Sony and Hollywood for making fun of us. Wish kain ye-ye yori-yori re-branding of 9ja u ministas dey yarn, sef. Tsch!

In 1997, students did it in Indonesia. Soheto was kicked out of office. These Nigerian rulers(these folks don't merit the term 'leaders')loot public fund, send their children to school abroad and without an iota of shame and with all boldness parade themselves around. In case you did not know, October 2009 begins a judgement for all the enemies of Nigeria. BE WARNED!!!

It is worrisome to read that the education minister is sam egwu or what is is name is footdragging. These people need to be God fearing. They need divine intervention i guess. gooday

I sincerely appeal to Mr President on behalf of all Nigerian students to reopen talks with ASUU and get the universities open with immediate effect. We all know all the policy makers in our land has their children studying abroad but consideration must be given to the children of others who are majority. The govt must not wait for the students to take laws into their hands before something is done please. The disparity in the wages of the university lecturers and our law makers is just too high, something need to be done fast. Please pump this wastful money into the education system and let our universities rank equal with others in the world.

CLEARLY WE CAN ALL SEE THAT THIS EGWU IS HIGHLY INCOMPETENT FOR THE POSITION HE OCCUPIES....BUT TO YARADUA , HE IS A VERY SMART PERSON,HEY HEY HEY...WHO WILL SAVE US FROM THIS KIND OF PEOPLE?

Let face reality here, the government have actually fail the people in terms of good education and good infrastructure which is very very bad compared to other countire. Also the so called lecturers who are met to teach the student, teach them good morals to beter the country engage in also sort of rubbish in the school for instance sleeping with stident in the school, selling handout at exhorbitant prices, failing excellent student, not coming to class to teach the student and at the end of term they set exams quetions. Both lecturers and the government are quilty and should be dealth with severely because the innocent student deserves right to solid education in a good environment, and a well equip structures for easily learning. On the otherhand, despite the fact that most lecturers claimouring for these increase dont deserve it, due to the various fevorious activity and turning the whole eduction system to be a political game. Justice must prevail and it will BY THE GRACE OF GOD.

Their childen go abroad to study while those who cant afford overseas education are left here to suffer yet, our universities go on strike and the standerd of education is falling.May God help us!

Posted by Oyeleke on Sep 29 2009

The government is being very oblivious of the situation because they are not so affected by it. Most of their wards are either in Cyprus, U.K or even Ukraine.

Sometimes i really wonder if the student unionism still existed in this country. I really don't know why the National Association Of Nigerian Students would just sit down with folded arms and watch there lives being put in perpetual jeopardy when they can actually come together and match down to aso rock and demand for there right. All these protest by students from different schools is child's play. The governors can do little or nothing. Sometimes i think the president of NANS is also as insensitive as the president of Nigeria and his education minister. Let Nigerian students get up, come together and fight these people. There is strength in population.
