Oshiomhole offers to intervene in ASUU strike

Print print Email email Share Share

Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole has expressed his willingness to personally ensure the resumption of talks between the Federal Government and striking university lecturers. He offered to intervene after a two-hour meeting with the Minister of Education, Sam Egwu, in Abuja on Thursday.

“ I am concerned about the dispute between ASUU and the federal government. So the essence of this visit is to have the issues resolved in order to restore some integrity back into the academic calendar of universities. It is necessary to know that the future of Nigeria depends on human capital development, not on liquid (oil) resources.” The governor met with Mr. Egwu in the minister’s office, before holding a joint briefing together.

After the meeting he said “What can be problem is if the parties are not ready to talk.Let’s talk on the issues in the interest of the nation. I want to assure you that over the next couple of days, we will have the parties come back to the negotiation table.’’

Open to negotiation

Mr. Egwu, who has been criticized for his role in the nation’s longest union strike in three years, said the Federal Government is willing to reconsider its stand.

“I am appreciative of the governor of Edo state who had come to contribute his quota in trying to resolve this problem which has been lingering for a long time,” he said. “Government is worried like every other Nigerian , we never thought this problem will linger on till this moment. This problem started between ASUU and Government many years ago, since 2001, and renegotiation in 2002 to 2009.’’

Good talk Comrade Governor Oshiomhole, but the Education Minister must resign since he is not committed to his beat. Hear him:“I am appreciative of the governor of Edo state who had come to contribute his quota in trying to resolve this problem which has been lingering for a long time,” he said. “Government is worried like every other Nigerian , we never thought this problem will linger on till this moment. This problem started between ASUU and Government many years ago, since 2001, and renegotiation in 2002 to 2009.’’ This is an absurd statement from a man charged with the Education Management of this great country. He clearly had no plan B and since June 22, when the strike started, he folded his hands and threw a lavish bash. He has to go.

Some of us are only interested in watching things go bad,and creating excuses why we cannot contribute to development. Same way So many could not see why the past governor of Edo State,Lucky Igbinedion should work on the failed portions of Benin-Uselu-Ugbowo road, claiming it was a federal road. But this is a road we in the city use daily.I am not sure we are tired of spending the millions of Naira we spend in getting education in the UK.To think that many of us would rather allow our educational system to rot,not contribute even by way of opinion, and then go spend our millions of Naira abroad, and at the end of the day get nothing in return. What use is man if he cannot be of benefit at any level of society.Adam Oshiomole, you were once a labour man,so u understand better...Like you rightly said that "...the future of Nigeria depends on human capital development, not on liquid (oil) resources" .Carry on.

I pray Comrade Adam Oshiomole is able to resolve the whole issues which have crippled our university system since June, 2009. I will like to say that federal government should be sincere this time around so that the problem will not reoccur in future. whatever good resolutions reached by the parties, they should be implemented as contained in the signed agreement. If this is done the vision 2020 for the country is realizable and many good changes will be seen in the country's university system.

Do not let us personalize the issues. Constitutionally education is on exclusive list. All the owners of Universities should be carried along in finding a lasting solution the problems of tertiary education. ASUU and FG should note this.

Adams, stop creating diversions. You have problems at home. Since you came into office, only talk talk, nothing for us. Please concentrate on governance. You are now a Governor not a union leader. Leave ASSU problems to the negotiators to tackle, that is if the man in Aso Rock will wake up and sign the papers.

Sam Egwu does not know the meaning of education, hence human capital development and what it meant for a 3rd world country like Nigeria; and that's why his brothers and sons liter all major cities in Nigeria selling "right to copy" CDs. Let his PDP employer assign him another portfolio - Minister of "right to copy", since he is copying the long standing attitude of the federal government, of not responding to the people he was meant to guide. I think the President has failed in his constitutional responsibility, to ensure that every Nigerian have access to qualitative and affordable education here in this great country of ours and not abroad. The fact is, no sooner had the politicianS started sending their children abroad for education than they allowed the nation's educational sytstem to cave in. The question now is,how would they realised their vision 20:2020, without skilled man power? Or would they continue to import expatraites? The masses have to rise up now and defend their future, or else, later would be too late. GOD FORGIVE OUR CORRUPT LEADERS AND BLESS NIGERIA.

The whole thing is that our so-called leaders never for once take education of the poor masses serious. For good three months the issue of strike cannot be resolve. What then shows their competence if this state of affairs is to be use as the criteria for assessing their performance so far. If we blame a mere minister so much, how or what then can we say of the president who suddenly lost his shame on tackling the education upraise in his own country and travel to Saudi to stupidly grace the inauguration of one university when the universities in his own country are not in session because his insensitivity. May God help this country not this present leaders. Amen!!!

There is a union language that His excellency,Adams understands that the politicians dont and also a political language he understands that the Union people(Asuu) dont.He might end up being the right negotiator. But I wonder why some of our so called leaders always want to be remembered for the wrong reasons?

Posted by Ogundele Kazeem on Sep 25 2009

I believe it is time these Ghana-Must-Go Politician begin to have a rethink of their actions. I wept when i discovered that no single University among the arrays of Universities in my country could make the list of first-five thousand Universities in the world ranking. It was amazing to discover that the 1st Nigerian Universi- ty to make the world ranking was UNIBEN,with a ridiculous position of 6,602 position in the world. Unilorin(7,902), OAU(7,942),Ibadan(8,034) and Unilag(8,871). AS if these disgrace was not enough, the so-called GIant of Africa could not make a list of the 1st-fifty in Africa The Universities mentioned above were positioned as folow in Africa:61st, 77th,78th,81st & 95th respectively. AS a graduate of Unilag, i can really see the difference between a Nigerian University and a UK University where i am presently studying for my MBA.The practicality of the knowledge and facilities are far apart. The govern- ment of our country did nothing in our Universities. School administratrators in Nigeria are not exempted, they are almost as corrupt as politicians. The likes of VCs and top administrators of Nigerian Universities could hardly account for the federal government grants to Universities. Could you believe that as at four - five years ago when i left University, the Federal government grant to the Federal Universities falls within the range of #100million and above on monthly basis. But could not see the impact on my University for instance. My solace lies in the fact that most of their children scholing in top Universities abroad may not end up being greater than people like us who had the epileptic Nigerian education and still be able to wine and dine at the top- most level. May GOD open their inner minds to see that the wealth they are accumulating amounts to vanity.

The whole issue is all about fantacy. I am sick and tired of this strike of a thing, when school resumes now is exam straight! In as much as the exams the grading will be poor directing fault to our innocent student. Why will there not be increase in armed robbery where the lecturers are on thier same own interest wanting to be riding Hummer jeep to classrooms; then teaching us with beer tommy, while the female counterparts are busy selling jewelleris and cloths in the staff rooms. Shame to Nigerians Educational sector, the problem is about the strike but the attitude of teachers and student, but more about teachers. Pls Fed. Gov. Resists Negociation and let the strike continues Period!

This is the problem: Mr President was a former Governor. The De-Honourable missing of Education was also a former Governor. So what good do u expect from this duo who came on-board courtesy Mr. Obasanjo (The Bells Univesity). He will of course tell them to prolong the strike so that his univesity will have more enrollment. The wicked actors are all quite now (Obasanjo, Atiku, Banbangida, Anenih,....others). May God Judge wickedness in this land. Amen.

I can feel your pains. I was once in your shoes as an undergraduate. Just keep the hopes alive.Dont give up on your dreams, its a matter of time. There is always a light at the end of every dark tunnel. Dont see social vices as an option to your idleness. Try to keep yourselves busy while the strike lasts. Remember, tough time dont last, but tough people do. Believe me,the day you will wear the exit gown, these strikes would become history.More importantly, keep yourselves productively busy.

The university systems has suffered great deprivations over the years. Gross inadequacy of teaching, learning and research facilities and laboratory equipment calls for grave concern. Our university systems have become another avenue for politics. The selection of vice-chancellors in a transperent manner is no more the case. The selection of a new vc for University of Nigeria Nsukka was characterised by massive irregularities and bribery just to install an udi man. More disturing is the remunaration for our esteemed university lecturers and professor. the average pay of a US professor is USD100,000 while that of their nigerian counterpart is a chicken feed of USD24,000. I dont want to talk about the pitiable budgetry allocation of less than 7.5% as against the recommended 26% for our educational system. why wouldnt our university close down when a senator in a month gets paid what six professor with their PhD get paid in a year. NIGERIA SORRY.

Hmn… Should we also expect more comments or contributions from outside the nation, before the ASUU Strike would be called off? if the FG. and the minister of Education of the so-called Giant of Africa, are not able to provide the basic needs of the citizens they preside over (most especially in Educational sector), because, the adage of the earth we live on, speaks that, "a committee without commitment will commit crime, and this has shown the level of commitment, they have for this nation's development in Education. But the attitude of the minister of Education is questionable, can we call this incompetency, or should we assume the fact that he is been frugal? Should any one know the problem of the minister of education and the FG and the measure of the rule of law required for this context, please publicize; and I advice that an unbiased committee should be set-up to look into this and the ASUU Strike should be called off for peace to reign in the land.
