The N13 billion nanny

Print print Email email Share Share

It has come to this. In the free-for-all that was our banking system, even a nanny could obtain a N13 billion loan from one of our top banks. Especially if she was the owner's nanny.

Such was the good fortune of Nanashetu Abdulai, who served Cecilia Ibru as nanny to her eldest son, Oboden.

In our banking system, this was enough collateral to persuade Oceanic Bank, which is now on life support and has been taken over by the Central Bank, to extend billions to Nanashetu. At least officially.

Ms. Abdulai, 51, also known as Nanashetu P. Bedell, received what is now being called the "nanny loan" based solely on her relationship with Mrs. Ibru, who is now a fugitive from the law and is wanted on fraud, money laundering, and stock manipulation charges by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. As at May 31, the loan was non-performing, according to a list released by the Central Bank.

Attempts to reach Ms. Abdulai at both her office and by telephone were unsuccessful.

Ms. Abdulai secured the loan as the sole director of Circular Global International Ltd. The company turned up as debtor number 13 on the CBN list of debtors to Oceanic Bank. Ms. Abdulai is also the chief executive of the upscale corporate and household gift items suppliers called Nanshet Limited. Its head office is on Akin Olugbade high street, Victoria Island in Lagos.

Nanshet Ltd trades in corporate and household gift items and supplies majority, if not all, of Oceanic Bank's corporate souvenirs and staff insignias. Mrs. Ibru's signature neckties are samples of Nanshet's supplies.

Nanshet Limited started business in 1990 selling only christian books and gifts. It now specialises in the procurement and distribution of electronics, household items and corporate gifts on a wholesale and retail level. It opened an American office in 2002.

Ms. Abdulai was the nanny to the former Managing Director of Oceanic Bank and the first son of Mrs. Ibru, Oboden Ibru, but has become a close member of the family.

"She is generally called Sister Nana within Oceanic Bank," said one source. Another source referred to her as "Cecilia Ibru's twin sister," establishing the close relationship which Ms. Abdulai shares with the Ibru family and also alluding to the influence that Ms. Abdulai wields away from the domestic domain of the Ibru family to the corporate quarters where public funds are held.

"It is conventional wisdom in Oceanic that the fear of Sister Nana is the beginning of wisdom," said an insider who pleaded anonymity at Oceanic Bank Headquarters on Ozumba Mbadiwe Street on Victoria Island, Lagos.

No. 4 Akin Olugbade Street is just a white, plain looking one-storey building that is unremarkable in every aspect apart from sharing a fence with an Oceanic Bank branch. It looks more like a residential building than an office space. In a section of the compound, heaps of ceramic tiles are packed amid large wooden boxes.

Nanshet Mega Stores sells luxury gift items, such as flower vases, ceramic plates, steel trolleys and large aluminium and enamel pots and dishes. It is located at the ground floor of City Mall directly opposite the entrance of the mall.

IT GETS SADDER AND SADDER, NO WONDER MRS IBRU HAS TAKEN TO HER HEELS......TO THINK THAT THIS IS NOT HER MONEY BUT DEPOSITS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE WHO TRUSTED THE COMPANY CALLED OCEANIC....ITS TIME INTERNATIONAL INVESTIGATORS ARE CALLED IN TO FOLLOW THE TRAIL, ESPECIALLY IBORI, WHO IN ONE VOICE ADMITS THAT THE DEBTOR COMPANIES ARE HIS BUSINESSES,AND IN THE NEXT ACCUSES THE PRESS OF FALSEHOOD,PLS THIS IS NO JOKE...EFCC CANNOT GUARANTEE EFFECTIVE PROSECUTION AND CONVICTION

Lord Save our Country.

Posted by Ken Imade on Aug 25 2009

All these sensational revealations have not proved that Mrs Ibru committed any crimes. Such relationships, as between her and her ex-nanny, exist all over the world. Please don't let's confuse issues. The Yar'Adua government is the most dangerous in the history of our land. All its efforts - the latest CBN action, the colonisation of the oil industry, the new agressive beamlight on the operations of Microfinance institutions and the directive to the Insurance industry last week, are meant to turn the house upside down and take over its reigns. And then run things down. That last refuge of the Southern elite is being destroyed. Southerners think!

Posted by Henry 4rm Warri on Aug 25 2009

If the EFCC can only get that thief called Ibori then we will believe it has started on a good footing, others will be a small thing.

Posted by oluomo okusajo on Aug 25 2009

this is unbelivable.

Posted by Omon on Aug 25 2009

Very sensational.....at least we will never have a repeat of this again in the banking sector in the future

Posted by foluke on Aug 25 2009

I hope something good will come out of this probe because if they continue to mention names of debtors, heads will roll. This is another opportunity for EFCC to prove her worth.

Ken Imade, I am a Southerner and a business person...I am thinking!!! However, does this make all these allegations untrue or these mismanagement of funds allowable? Please lets be reasonable and ask ourselves the truth, even if there is a grand conspiracy why are we working to ensure that it is perfected? We should stop playing the ethnic card cos it is so sickening, Why do we have to do business this way? Mybe you are not a business person and have not tried to raise funds for a genuine cause....I would understand you then!!!

Next u are certainly up to something. This doesn't sound like what the press should be, instead it sounds like personal vendeta. We know ur owner once worked with guardian also owned by the Ibru's. It would be better u tell us the bad blood u have straight up , cos Nigerians have gotten wiser than all these. I guess this wont be posted cos u guys are fraud, so u rather filter the comments u prefer. We know u and we are slowly watching. It is sad the press is being bribed now.

I just want members of the public not to be pertubed or disillusioned by this destructive publicity that the recently sacked Five banks executives in Nigeria now received. If we go back to the bowels of Political history we will kown that Political Power in this country rest with the North and that Economy power rest with the south. If we are to go back to what we have read in the Vanguard Newspapers of March 23, 2009 that predicted the sack of these Five Banks Executives we will not be committing any fallacy that there is grand design been orchestrated by the CBN Governor to convert nothern political power to economy power! Put differently, it is a grand design for northern bourgeoisie to buy up some of these Nigerian banks!

Since when has it been illegal to fund a great Idea and help the one that has a good idea capitalize on it, while the bank also makes the necessary profit. Is it proven that the fund loaned to the briliant Nanny is "non performing"??? From my reading and my understanding in life its often said and told " its not what you know, its who you know" and 95 percent of the rich people around the globe capitalise on the bases of who you know. Great job for the nanny for utilizing who she knows for succeding in life and a greater job for Mrs. Ibru for building a great bank against all odds. In a western world this woman, would have been protected by all types of woman organizations She has achieved what no woman has achieved around the globe.

Posted by Ehi Iden on Aug 25 2009

It's so shameful and sounds unbelievable the kind of management system Cecilia Ibru used in running Oceanic Bank. I feel really bad with all these new revelations.

Posted by Kolawole Iru on Aug 25 2009

Intresting, a former nanny now turned business mogul. I certainly encourage enterprise or rather capitalism when practised fairly. It would be nice for the publishers of this informative newspaper to also feature an article on Mrs Ibru herself, was she not a nanny or househelp before rising to become wife? If this is the case then what do we expect.

Posted by Lesley Agams on Aug 25 2009

It's called free market enterprise, who says a nanny can't beome a billionaire CEO But still my question remains why are only southerners being taregted? Are all the northern onwed banks in the clear?

Henry's hit it Spot On! The sooner the latest incarnation of charmingly murderous, kleptocratic "Evil Genius" in the person of James Ibori is placed RIGHTFULLY in prison, the sooner the Niger Delta, Lagos Banking and Abuja Politricks can inch closer to peace and progress.

Ken Imade, please please please, if you have been dinning with the devil and destroying the future of this nation, may God almighty punish all of you together. Do you know how many people die on teh line while waiting for their pension. Do you know how many farmers, traders, students who believed Oceanic bank is the best saved their money for rainy days. Do you know how many legitimate traders looking for just N200,000 loan to start a business are turned down because they have no"collateral". Collateral my foot, I can just be a nanny to Yar Adua's youngest daufhter (who knows, she might be the MD of a bank when I turn 55). then who do one trust? i was one of those who supported Cecilia on this very Next page three days ago. I am dissapointed. Nothing works here, a vulganiser cant get a loan of 5,000, a school teacher cant get a loan of N50,000. I work in a multinational company and Wanted to take a loan of half a million, I was told I could not get it because my salary was N95,000 per month, I was told to go and bring my fathers birth certificate. This country cant develop like this, must I know someone in the power house b4 I can take a loan of N200,000??? Yet we, infact, I am tired of typing or talking. the Ibru dynasty is a can worm of corruption, we have lots and lots of them in this country. What a shame,

Posted by Shine on Aug 25 2009

@ Ken Imade. Even if this is another "ethnic cleansing" exercise, is it not often that he who comes to equity must come with clean hands? This is dissapointing. The world has not heard of the "rot" that went on during the days of Cecilia Ibru at the helms of affair at Oceanic.

Mediocrity meets incompetence. When full time housewives are allowed to run financial institutions that touches the lives of all and sundry failure is what you get. Cicilia has obviously reached etc (end of thinking capacity). Please check very well even her aboki and her pets are debtors toooo. Its such a shame.

Posted by Roz on Aug 25 2009

@Ken Inmade...I am also a Southerner. I am alarmed that you find nothing wrong with the revelations so far. Tell me this if you deposit funds with the bank and you were told beforehand that the funds will be used to give Cecilia's ex-nanny a loan wothout collateral will you still be willing to deposit your funds in their bank?....in your opinion this is not a crime?...Please let us be honest with ourselves. There is nothing tribalist about this. This move is clearly an attempt to protect depositor's funds and we should thank God for Sanusi instead of seeking sinister plots of Northern dominance in every corner!

Posted by Nanny Oboden on Aug 25 2009

Ken Imade, It is sad that you are still bringing sentiment to bear on issues that bothers on betrayer of trust and mismanagement of public fund. We hould think straight rather than thinking tribalising issues such as this. This sort of loan failed to perform because it was emotional approved and planned abinitio not to perform. The mind set of most of our top bankers is that they own these banks despite the fact they are public quoed. The recent action by CBN although it has its flaws too has reconfirmed that these public quoted companies belongs to the people and shd not be run as personal business.

Posted by uyii edo on Aug 25 2009

I guess we still dont understand the concept of credit risk, a good name is better than any form of collateral. The lady had personal relationship with the ibru having looked after their son as a nanny and now runs her outfit established in 1990 means she is a good business woman. Nicholas Ibekwe ensure u dont sell negativity while reporting. A good loan is not determined by the collateral rather by the persons integrity and cecilia Ibru I believe can vouch for the integrity of her son's nanny who has ever since become a business leader in her right. I will say it again at best Sanusi is miguided and at worst Sanusi is mischevious

To reduce the rot and the cleansing in the banking sector to a ethnic matter is the greatest disservice to this nation! why is it all the time a thief is caught in Nigeria that we remember his/her tribe, religion or Political affliation. The main question we should ask is "has she done the right thing under the present circumstance?" The Ibrus, Akingbola & co should not bring ethnic & religious sentiment into the whole matter here... Face the music!

Why did Ibru ran away? even if you are her lawyer I think the first task on your hand is to deny such an embarassing allegation then reasonable people will listen to you. Let all of us support this cleasing at least for th sake of our children. Thanks.

I am deeply dissapointed in Next. I used to admire this paper, but it has descended low in my eyes. Is Oceanic the only bank you have stories to write on? Is Oceanic the only reason you've gone daily? You have an axe to grind with Oceanic and the perfect medium to cast aspersion and mud at a woman who has defied norms and customs and brought pride to women across Africa. All the banks had corrupt officials, why dont you talk about them? was it only the MDs that singlehandedly engaged in corruption? Next reporters, confess the sin the Ibrus sinned against you so you can have peace. Evil thoughts will not give you peace.

I am sick and tired of the mass hysteria and crucify him syndrom. And all you male chauvinistic pigs should spare us! Is it because Cecilia Ibru granted a loan to her former nanny that you guys have sunk so low as to ridicule her? Your prayers was for her to remain a nanny all her life right? Shame on you all! If she is enterprising, she should not be encouraged right? Let's address the issues and leave out all these sensational bits. It exposes us as a nation populated by mob-mentality, Pull-him-down (phd) idle and blind people whose necks are skrewed in the wrong direction. Let's ask pertinent questions. Was due process observed in granting the facilities, were the loans secured, were they meeting their obligations, paying as and when due? If you are looking for a N50,000 facility, you go to the microfinance banks or you grow your ideas, think big maybe become a nanny to somebody who you hope will become bank ceo in the future. We all want to reap where we did not sow. 20 or 30 years ago when she was sowing in cecilia's house and sweating to do her job of babysitting etc, you think she was not learning from the people she was serving? Please NEXT I hope you will not end up as these soft sell screaming evening papers. I had thought you were a serious bunch. Am I dissappointed?

@ Ken Imade, which part of the following is difficult to comprehend? These are the facts published. the total amount outstanding at the EDW was N256 billion ($1.6 billion), most of which was owed by the five banks. These banks showed serious liquidity strain and had to be given financial support by the CBN ... Read more CBN then did a proper audit of the five banks. It found that the banks do not have the ability to meet the obligations of their depositors and creditors and that they are in a grave situation. •The high level of non-performing loans was attributable to poor corporate governance practices, lax credit administration processes and the non-adherence to the bank’s credit risk management practices. •The total loan portfolio of these five banks was N2,801.92 billion ($17 billion). Margin loans amounted to N456.28 billion ($2.8 billion) and exposure to the oil and gas industry was N487.02 billion ($3 billion). Aggregate non-performing loans stood at N1,143 billion ($7.2 billion), representing 40.8%.

Cant you read? the core of teh story is that Cecilia's integrity stinks. If a good name can get you loan, why has madam ekundayo in Kogi state never gotten a loan for her ophanage, she has been running it for the past decades (if not for TY Bello's song on Ekundayo, none of us would have heard of her). If a good name can get you a loan, why do we see picturs of children who needs just 2m, just 2m for heart surgery (they die in their hundreds). If Cecilia is such a philatopist, why cant she give just 1billion to teh Kanu heart foundation to help children? What of teh heart of gold, little saints ophanage etc etc. Uyi, you are a disgrace to teh human race, lack of collateral deposit with God makes you misuse the brain he has given you.

234 Next, pls did you investigate to find out whether or not the so called Nanny followed due process to obtain her loans? Are we saying that she is not entitled to a loan because she was once the Ibru family nanny? Is there anything wrong with being a nanny and later transform into a business person and seek loan from a friend to build your busniess? Please lets do away with all this sentimental bullshit. Mrs Ibru may have made some bad investments choices, but she is certainly not a criminal as being portrayed. We must start respecting men and women who make sacrifices to build this country. Why do Nigerians destroy their own at the slightest opportunity?

It is a shame that at this time in Nigeria things like this could have happened without a stop gap measure from the CBN earlier. What a shame.I strongly believe that quite typically nothing and i mean nothing will come out of this. There will be noise and all the threats, after a few months they will come out and will be celebrated by same Nigerians whose hard earned monies have been fleeced.Heavan helps those who help themselves, our childrens children will never forgive us for not doing anything.Iboti is a known criminal at least in Britain and currently in Nigeria he is standing a sham trial in his homestead Asaba, he has his boys Edevie and Ebreneyin in Aso Rock to give him all the insider info, what can Yaradua really do to that man?

I am happy with some of the reactions above, putting some people where they really belong. It is pathetic that some Nigerians will play the ethnic card as far as this issue is concern. It is also unfortunate that someone think that Next as a newspaper has an issue with the Ibru family. It is more pathetic when you realise that these set of characters may one day aspire to be in position of authority in the country, be it public or private. If such an unfortunate event ever happen, what do you think will be the faith of Nigeria and her people. It is already bad as it is. It can only get worse with the mindset of some people on this forum. I am a southerner, in fact a Yoruba and I think I like what is going on now. It is a prelude to a larger event that I hope will happen sooner than later. Sanusi ride on. If it is an ethnic card, tell your father, mother, sister, brother, cousins, uncle or benefactor not to put his or her hands into money put in his or her care by the people. Period.

Oh ye gullible Nigerians! Go and read Vanguard Newspaper of March 23, 2009 [published by Omoh Gabriel & Emeka Mammah]. All that is happening now was “predicted”. The removal of Soludo, the installation of Sanusi, the plot by a cabal to take over 5 banks and the spread of negative reports such that the public will loose its confidence in the 5 banks, thereby leading to hostile takeover. NEXT, one word of advice, do not allow yourself to be used. You seem to have a personal vendetta against the Ibrus. The fact that the woman ‘WAS’ a Nanny does not make her unqualified to take a loan. Let us not sin against God with our comments. It is a known fact in the industry that the 24 banks [maybe Citibank exempted] in Nigeria have toxic assets, so why pick on this 5? Do you truly think these 5 banks are insolvent? Think again!!

@ Kunle the non performing loans by banks are supposed to be collatarised escpecially the margin loans, the shares they were invested in is the collateral but the market fell in a big swoop our mkt is not liquid hence people loss over 30 percent in a week. A good name is what counts a woman that took care of your children over 30 yrs ago and did alright by owning her business will do better than a son of a rich man with lands and estate but has reduced the value of his inheritance. Mind you the Ibru as a family have always been out there as pioneers. I guess we all shout but who will u trust someone you have known or sombody u believe to you know. Credit risk is not the ability measuring the collateral but integrity first and the ability to pay back without putting a strain on the borrower. Mind the Accounting principles for banks in nigeria includes provision for loans, from 1% for performin loans and upto 100% for non performing loans. I wonder why this banks financial records had not beene qualified in this way by their accountants. I suppose the accounting firms should be investigated as well.

Gentlemen and ladies, where are we? I am surprised many times when we get carried away by certain issues and individuals that makes for no progress. For goodness sake, of what political or economical profit is this article to us? A former nanny got a loan from whom she had served, convinced of her loyalty, sincerity enterprise. Is there a sin in in borrowing money when you have a creative idea that worth sponsorship? I have no doubt that many of us commenting are also nursing many good ideas that can move the country forward. What makes your idea real is the connection you have with a vision helper. Again, this woman had started business since early 90s, haba, where were Dangote,Otedola and Ibrahim then? Definitely, she would have gotten loans and repay several times. She might even have accounts with other banks. She and Mrs Ibru are in business to succeed and not to be disgraced. If our leadership had been visionary and working would we be in a mess like this? Nigerians have got think and leave sentiments apart. How did we get here? A million of EFCC can't recover loans that are already castrated through a collapsed economy. Sanusi should know that these banks were sustained through the effort of someone with apolicy. What policy does he have to sustain the banks after his so-called reforms? Has it occured to Nigerians that the Soludo's policy of sustaining the power of the naira had been abolished and the naira may go for a dollar 200 times befor the year ends if nothing serious is done.

@ Next. Good investigative journalism! But enough of bad and negative publicity. What is the solution. Let's try and focus on the reconstructive exercise that CBN is focussed on doing i.e recovery of "non performing loans". I can tell you for instance that Oceanic bank is moving forward and has recovered up to N12 billion in one week. Same for other banks in this mess. Yes and yes the situation should be condemned, but i think it is time we focus on the positive. Next should also realise that there are employees in this banks and they can be psycologically affected. Please let have a BALANCED reporting.

Nanny Loans is the banking industry equivalent of a number of things taking place daily in the public sector. Did we not hear that the FCT Minister has been doling out land to relatives in their numbers. What about the contracts that are given to friends nd cronies in government circles by the hour? I have always said that Nigeia will be good someday, either by design or by default. Whether it is Northern Agenda or southern agenda that Sanusi is pushing, it must somehow throw up issues that could help some some of our intractable problems, a lot of which have been accepted as part of our culture. Congrats NEXT for being the truly next best thing in Nigerian journalism!!!!!!!!

I am so disappointed with NEXT. Whilst I don't mind you writing an article about Loans to a Nanny, your treatment lacks depth and analysis. It is pure sensationalism that is more befitting of the softcell magazines. Out of the 5 banks named, why have you invested so much on the Oceanic case and result to ad homminim? So many of your reporting about Cecila Ibru reeks of the worst kind of misogyny. Is it that you are so shocked to see a woman who is capable of mass corruption, or is it that you feel that she should never have occupied that position in the first place and you are now bringing out your drums and tamborines and rejoicing at her demise? Now, I am no fan of the Ibrus one bit, however, I think the way you have treated the whole thing is very uninsightful, uncritical and notvery illuminating. I was expecting more from you people. The other thing I have noticed is that, if this banking saga hasn't happened, what news would you have to fill your daily paper. Other papers are still reporting other things, but you guys don't seem to have much content. Btw, the colourfullness of your makes you look like one of those awlful local American newspapers or the British Junk papers like the Sun or the freebie papers. The colours are too much. I mean can we just look at issues objectively and make constructive comments?

I simply dont understand why Nigerians cant seem to seperate issues when they arise. Are we saying that a Nanny cant aspire to the good things of life. What is the history behind all these billionaires today, either their parents or grand were taxi drivers, farmers, bricklayers etc. That loan granted under undue process should be sepreated from it being granted to a NANNY. Are we saying the poor should remain poor. What do you now say of people like Obama, son a of a black immigrant to the US. Please Next paper, you guys need to be professionals. Who is Dangote's father in this country?

Madam Cecelia is not helping matters by going into hiding, she sud come out to clear air ...we sud not introduce primordial sentiment into dis discussion, the ordinary man on the street does not care if a bank is owned by a notherener or southerner he just want to put his money in a bank where he can go to sleep...Yaradua can at least heave a sigh of relief for now, till this banking imbroglio settles

@Ken Imade, Must we always reduce everything to ethnic or religious issues? Are the figures true or not and how many Northerners have ever been at the helms of affairs of Banks? This is about the second time or so thats banks will show signs of collapses and the head of States or presidents at those times have been Northerners. Did Northerners took control of the banking or financial sectors then? When Sanusi started this work, I told my friends that the only way this thief's can get away is by paying reporters to play the ethnic cards and that is exactly what is happening now. The ousted CEO's will continue to fight and fight they will. I hope the CBN is very prepared with equally good PR machinery in place. If we must grow, we need to be objective and call a spade a spade. It is annoying that anybody will call what is going on ethnic cleansing. I am sure you have never ever tried getting a loan to do any serious project!

I am not surprised that so many of us still see nothing wrong in what Cecilia Ibru has done in a society where we celebrate armed robbers and fradsters as our heroes. At least common sense should tell us that those fleecing Nigerians are the ones we see as custodians of our hard earned income. They open banks with little or no deposit (thanks to their cronies in CBN), then ask the public to come in and invest in their 'super duper' merchandise, siphon the funds into private businesses and the pockets of friends and well wishers and finally declare the banks as distressed. Behold the new face of 419!

If the loan is performing and the money used wisely, the nanny's family will never be poor, but how can u give a loan without collateral, maybe the nanny's name was just used. The question is did the nanny really take the money or did she front for someone? Like you said, she is close to the Ibru, but do you think they can trust her with some big money. For KEN, NGO, UYI n CO, you certainly not a patriotic Nigerians because you are reasonally out of SENSE. The article read of an insincere and unsecure dashing out of public fund, the money belonging to the ordinary market woman that her shop has just been demolish, a street trader who want to raise substancial fund for a shop in the market, THAT UNDERGRADUATE WHO EXPECT TO SAVE SUBSTANCIALLY FOR SELF EMPOLYMENT MANY, MANY SO, here you are talking trash. Asides, the Banks are said to be DECAPITALLISED, who understand what tath mean? I remember vividly, in the midst of the last year, each of these banks claimed to be over N100 Billion capital base, yet they went to the capital market ... the CEOs are simply inhuman and unprofessional with the system.

Posted by Ibru Follower on Aug 25 2009

@Nelly & other Ibru followers, the problem is not with the nanny being given a loan. The problem now is that the loan is non-performing! For a loan to be non-performing, it means the interest and the capital have not been serviced for at least the past one year. If Cecilia is as good as they say, what has she done to make her son's "nanny" pay up or service her loan this past year. She has not done womanhood proud, she has brought shame & disgrace to us! These MDs stink. There is no tribal issue here jo. Kudos to Sanusi & NEXT for revealing all this mess.

Ken Imade must be a 419ner and a loan defaulter. What is the reason for saying southerners should think? Did the north ask Mrs Ibru and her co- travellers to steal people's money? Why did she run away if she is indeed being persecuted for being a siutherner? Pepole like Ken Imade are the brains behind the lethal hatred in Nigeria. I am sure he is not well-read. Any body that toils with the public's money is a public enemy be he /she from north or south. CBN should expose all of them. I know that they are shielding many PDP heavy weights! Why didn't the CBN come to the aid of textile companies? It was because politicians are not interested in that area. Because they all have money in the banks, they were very quick in approving Sanusi's actions. There should be total love for the country if we hope to make any little progress. Shame on people like Imade!

We still have a docile press that is always busy exchanging awards for illgotten money and may not bother to do even the slighest digging up untill it is spoonfed with half truths; and a very complacent public that will only shift away when the fire comes closer(not attempt putting out the fire). There is need to reexamine our values and fast too.

It is so sad that it is difficult for one to really comprehend how to move Nigeria forward. Is it that we are too much or too ethnically diversed? The Central Bank of Nigeria (after exhaustive investigations I want to believe) published to the WORLD list of debtors to our banks, not due to huge debt or loan but due to "non-performing loans"; but some Nigerians would not see any sense in this but all they see is just the ethnic or tribal colouration either from the end of CBN or NEXT. I think we should for once try to be objective and progressive in our approach to addressing wahtever issue is tabled for discussion. Irrespective of how we (Nigeria) came to be, it is time we accepted our fate and see ourselves as one and approach issue very objectively. This way we can move forward! Cecilia or not, Nanny or not; we just have to move on as a country. God bless Nigeria as I still believe in it.

Lets forget sentiments and say what we say.......absolute control of the nation's resources which has been and will always be crude oil.......we do not prodcue anything else......please where is that oil...we are all stupid and deserve what we get! As events unfold, more and more of us will begin to see and talk and talk on these forums till we are old......until we all come out and say what we see and not what we are want to believe, nothing will change. Where is Yaradua during one its darkest hours??? Cavorting with criminals and looters? Why, because in Nigeria MONEY is a god. And those who have it, behave like gods. CBN's bail out of N420 Billion......is peanuts compared to what the nation has lost due to the follwoing: The Nigeria Police Nigerian Customs NNPC The Nigerian Armed Forces in particular the Army. Nitel NTA The loss attributable to the biggest killer Corruption is $300 Billion....and we are all crying because the banks need at least N420 Billion.......its not surprising though......how many of us do you think are there that know enough to be able to talk and talk and talk about it on the internet..........

Mr. Ken Imade, I just read your comments and two things came to my mind. It is either you a member of the Ibru family using a pseudonym to rave at Yar'adua or you are just plain stupid. Trying to play the southern card won't help here at all for a number of reasons. 1. Did Mrs. Ibru give her nanny a whopping N13billion of public funds without proper colatteral? Yes, she did. 2. Has the loan been repaid or is it performing? No, it has not been repaid and it is now classed as non-performing. 3. Does being close to someone mean we should not pbey the rules? No, it does not. So, my brother, if Yar'adua wants to put all southern law breakers into jail, if it is within my power, I would help him do it. A thief is a thief, whether he or she is from the north or south. Do you know how many southerners have died from hunger as other things as a result of the criminal activity of fellow southerners? So, please, Mr. Imade, think of something else. I repeat again, if all big criminals in the south go to jail, I would be very happy. If there are not enough jails to hold them, more should be built. I have not had power supply in my house for months and yet I keep getting bills and some characters are somewhere living it up with money i have put in the bank. Come, on, let these people rot in jail.

Incredibly sensationalist. This article is speculative. Whether or not Oceanic bank engaged in illegal practices, NEXT has not presented any evidence confirming that the nanny's loans were granted illegally. Granting a loan without collateral is not illegal, just careless.

Posted by Oh People on Aug 25 2009

@Yvette: Don't allow yourself to be used. Omoh Gabriel was crying wolf because his backers had given him an inkling to the unravelling awaiting banks with liquidity problems once CBN closed the EDW. And everybody knows these five banks were owing 95% of the billions drawn down through the EDW. Now check this: Where do you hear that a bank that has no liquidity problems will place a cap on what you can withdraw from your account? Why does such a bank feel obliged to ask the President to become a debt collector on their behalf through a newspaper advertorial? People keep screaming 'conspiracy; but won't look the facts in the face. Why were some banks able to scale through the audit? Deal with facts and let the conspiracies go to the thrash where they belong.

Posted by Chixzy on Aug 25 2009

Why are you people picking on NEXT? Mr. Babs, if that is really your name, you cannot be a true Nigeria unless of course you are one of the people bleeding this country. One of the cardinal functions of a news medium is to alert society of the dangers inherent in the activities of some of its members, in this case the granting of such huge loan without proper security. It is a responsibility, which should not be trifled with. One of the reasons why we are where we are today is because we like sweeping things under the carpet. A lot of Nigerians are very comfortable looking the other way instead of confronting evil head-on. What is sensational about the story? That Mrs. Beddell was not once a nanny of the Ibrus/ Or that she was not given a N13 billion loan? Really, we should wake up. It is our indolence and our trivialising of issues that has made it possible for the criminals in government and other high places to get away with their criminality. I feel sad for this country. We are too laid back, which is why the people who dare to confront these criminals in government and their lackeys and associates in the private sector are old men Anthony Enahoro and Gani Fawehinmi. Soon, they won't be with us anymore. And then what? we'll just roll over and let the vermins in government and private sector walk all over us. If that is our desire then, we are trully finished. We are finished because we are not thinking about the future of our children. Are we not worried by the fact that these days our youth no longer want to work hard or even go to school? Why is that so? Because they see people without pedigree suddenly become superstars overnight and nobody wants to know where they got their money from.

In my own candid opinion, Nanna the nanny was just a front to Cecelia Ibru. They both could be thinking that they owned the bank and whatever "common wealth" of the Bank could be shared between two friends who love each other. Most businesses in Nigeria are maintained on the platform of "paddy-paddy" especially where a one man business grows to become quoted. In civilised climes, this can not happen. Most of us making comments could do worse were we in Cecelia Ibru's shoes. She is highly qualified by education but what was her pedigree in the banking industry before now?Did she ever work in a Bank before Oceanic and as what? May God Help us all.

Posted by Kingpin on Aug 25 2009

Nanny's name sounds foreign, does she have residence permit not to talk of having the wherewithal to access loans in Nigerian banks? How did someone access loans of up to 13bn without collateral? That is the question which we should be asking. Former nanny or not, she should be asked to pay back hard-earned depositors' funds, we should not bury this tale into the dustbin of history without getting back all of the money. We shouldn't care whose ox is gored, depositors' funds must be recovered, so pay people. This is not about North/South dichotomy or dialectics.

Posted by Gift on Aug 25 2009

Why do we always throw in ethnicity, religion or sex. Lets discuss the issues. Did this woman have a business idea to support the loan which she took. Was there appropriate collateral? has she been paying back? Have efforts been made to recover the loan? If things have been done properly then we can question Sanusi's agenda. If they havent then it doesnt matter what Sanusi's agenda is. Public funds have been mismanaged. I dont care if Mrs Ibru was a full time house wife or Sister Nana was a Nanny. None of this disqualifies them as competent business persons. I have 3 degrees from universities all over the world. Graduated top of my class. At some point in life I fully intend to be a housewife. I would hate to be disrespected if I later went back to work and people thought the fact my being a housewife disqualified me from management. And Bill Gates never got a degree. Not sure Richard Branson did. So even my degrees are not what its about. Can you run a business properly. Lets stop being irrational and sentimental about these matters. Mrs Ibru did a good job in many respects. But we all know there's been a lot of fraud in most sectors of our economy. Monies being given to people who were never going to pay back, public funds used to fund private enterprises... If Mrs Ibru's part of this, then she should be made to pay.

What is the meaning of hypocrisy? A government is owing local contractors N2.3 Trillion and sends her agents to arrest and prosecute other debtors including some of those who they are owing and as a result of which they are are not able to meet obligations to their Banks. A classic case of removing the log in your eyes first. If d gov can pay up 50% of the N2.3 Trillion they are owing, there will be no crisis in any Bank.

Posted by Deola on Aug 25 2009

Nobody is saying a nanny cannot get a loan and become a business woman. The issue here is that her loan is NON-PERFORMING and she did not have a collateral. Since she supplies Oceanic bank with gift items and Oceanic paid for it, she must have been receiving profit on her business so why not pay? @UYI, who says a good name is better that collateral and that since its Ceclia's bank..... are you kidding me? Oceanic bank is a publicly traded company, the bank belongs to shareholders, the Ibru family might be the largest shareholder but that does not give them the right to run the bank like a private company. Even a private bank still has to submit its financial statement to the CBN because banks are systematically important to a country. Citibank and Standard Charted are private bank in Nigeria but they still submit their financial statement to the CBN just like every other bank.

Posted by Lucas Omonode on Aug 25 2009

Yvette, read your earlier quote "The fact that the woman ‘WAS’ a Nanny does not make her unqualified to take a loan" I agree with you to a very large extent however it seems you anre an insider so i will be asking you what it the average salary of the Nanny in nigeria?Who were her guarantors and how did she secure the loan?If you have never tried getting a load from a bank in Nigeria i have an for a very viable project a farm i needed only 2Mikllion naira and i had landed properties to guarantee the loan, i was refused so my darling please tell me something else. You and i know this was clearly an arrangee loan, a backdoor arrangement to fleece people of their hard earned money. It is a shame that we can never see beyond our noses.I do not believe any northernisation of any bank, we should grow beyond those thoughts, Sanusi is trying so far to sanitize the financial institutions starting from Banks, the Insurance industrty should be next as there is a lot or rot there as well.I pray he succeeds, because if he is not careful, Ibori will sack him just like he did to Nuhu Ribadu.

When you report a news in Nigeria, you are prosecuting an agenda. When you dont report the news, you are covering up for someone. We prefer that CNN gives us there own version and only then is it authentic. Why cant Nigerians be objective for once in their confused existence without insinuating tribe or other factor when reasoning. Who on earth does not know that the relationship between Cecilia and Nana makes it is ethically wrong to loan her money talkless of the amount involved. How will we all feel if YarAdua makes his daughter the Governor of the Central Bank or a minister?

Posted by BABS on Aug 25 2009

I do understand the sentiment at play especially in a country where emotions drive decision making. I cannot absolve the governor but thus far we can see that things had never been right with the Banking Industry. It could be argued that in capitalism these Bankers can choose to lend to whoever pleases them provided the shareholders agent (board) grants approval. I personally think in the light of these findings, the entire board including non executive members should be made to leave. Remember these are members re-appointed in annual AGMs of these institutions with responsibility of curbing the excesses of executive members. We should begin to worry if the new MDs will be allowed to perform. We should investigate the banks and see if any changes are now being made. We should further subject the hypothesis of the CBN to test and see the best way out of this imbroglio rather than the ethnic rant that calls on us to hate. Whether economic power lies with the north or south should not bother us as we are not in competition, we are one people, one nation pledging allegiance to one God. If the north remains poor, does it not make Nigeria poor? If we lose political contribution from the south, does it not make Nigeria weaker? A new generation beckons with a mind to debunk our old ideologies, we either change or be rejected!

Male or Female, Old or young, it is a financial crime to side step risk management policies and grant huge loans based on personal relationships alone. My concern here is that she is now found incapable of repaying a whopping N13 billion supposed to be OPM. That is after she must have made profit from the supply business she does for Oceanic bank. That is indeed unfortunate. With her case, Oceanic Bank might want to deceive people that its loan facility processes are the freest in the industry. That is far from true. Ironic as it might seem, I was a recent victim of Oceanic Bank's high handedness. I had sought a N5 million loan to finance a land purchase needed for a small business. The loan did not sail through as one of their branches in Ogba refused to grant the facility. The loan is self collateralised as they were told they have the option of taking over the real estaten and still sell for profit. Yet, the same bank could give a N13 billion loan out, simply on self recognition!! That is where I have have my worries, that is where I also think Cecelia needs to answer some salient but simple questions about the place of due process in managing risk exposures. It goes beyond questioning the locus of NEXT in this matter. It goes beyond the tinge of ethnic jingoists, It is simply the way to go. Pls.

Take a look at all the vital sectors i.e nnpc, customs, efcc, ministry of finance, npa, cbn etc. they are being controlled by the north. I hope the southern Nigeria will open their eyes before it is too late. i don't trust sanusi

In my opinion NEXT has done nothing wrong in publishing this. I want to believe they carried out their investigations before releasing this else it's a stain on their integrity if it's really a vendetta against the Ibrus (as some people have claimed above). Yes it seems sensational since none of the sources are actually named but let's face it which Oceanic bank staff would boldly claim responsibility for leaking this? Let's not get carried away on the argument of who is right or wrong. More focus should be on the way forward. Even the CBN itself is not totally clean in all of this. The rot didn't just start so why is there so much noise now? I don't see anyone asking for CBN to explain how they failed in their regulatory responsibility. Procedures need to be put in place to prevent re-occurrence in future. Finally it's important to desist from insults in airing one's views. Also playing the ethnic card in cases like this is anti-objective.

It is evident that some idle numbskulls just come to Next,r read a story and post arrant nonsense!!! None of these characters attacking Next for doing this great scoop has up to N1 million in any bank. So, that's why they can' see anything wrong with granting a loan of N13 billion to someone without collateral. I think you funny supporters of the bank-looters need to have a rethink. Y'all are really a pitiable lot, spewing such ignorance. That's why Nigeria is having problems with development because everybody wants to talk. How many want to use their brains, think deeply befoe talking. Very, very few.

@Babs and James, you guys must be of shaddy character, I am very sure. Now, James, what is sensational about reporting a nanny getting a N13 billion non performing loan. Mind you, we are not talking about N13 million but billions. Of course there is nothing wrong in a bank granting loans, but N13 billion to one's nanny, haba. If the woman were not to be a nanny to Mrs. Ibru's son, would she have been handed such a whopping sums of money. You guys should drop your idiotic posture and put on your thinking caps. Of course, we know that some of you are Ibru slaves and you are ready to die with them. Good luck. But you are not convincing anybody here.

@oscar I read you so well. I typed something about the keem connection and it was not published. Life is a very complex one I tell you. The various connections DO and wife might have had in life may have NOTHING to do with the present focus on Mrs Ibru. The business model of this paper from what I can deduce is "If it bleeds, it leads" The sensationalism they thought they could fight is what they are fast sinking into. If you read the publishers comment when they were setting out, it was a social change model and one that will build agenda for the public and politicians. Now that reality is setting in, they are getting wiser and altruism may take back seat. As a student of the print media in Nigeria I can compare this outing to when Punch came aboard. One of the many Fela cases was the most topical and Punch went for it like no other paper did. I am saving EVERYTHING I can about how this paper started including the video announcement of the publisher when he was calling for those interested in working for him. oscar just watch and pray.....

Sadly, this country is full of submissive sycophants who accept their role of peasants in a feudal system. It is, therefore, no surprise that the Ibrus of this world can blindside the populace and get away with it. One of the roles of a newspaper is to expose wrongdoing without fear or favour. It is easy to understand why Mrs Ibru happens to be the toast of the week. She's flamboyant, sought publicity through as many dubious banking awards as possible, the case against her is heavily corroborated, and she's easier on the eye than Erastus. It's a good juicy story. And, as there are skeletons in many other closets, one hopes it will be somebody else's turn next week.

I am directing this to all these bank debtors who after getting thees loans behave in the common Nigeria way of snubbing others. EFCC, ICPC PLEASE LIVE UP TO THE POWER IMPOSED ON YOU BY THE AUTHORITY. SAVE NIGERIA!! How can a former nanny be given 13 billion naira loan? This can only happen in Nigeria

Posted by daaloy on Aug 25 2009

Good discovery. Is the business worth the loan amount? If yes, put it on fast track and claims. If not, look more and recovery some may be personal items. Folks, our banks have been busy building portfolios personalities and forget about routine operational activities like debt managements. There is no doubt banks must give loan for businesses to survive, following up on these obligations have been our sore points. Nigerians are ver greedy people. Loan repayment is the last thing a Nigerian thinks. It is a culture that must change. But it has to be done the right way, not for publicity. Bank's confidentiality must be withheld and customers information remains private.

If Soludo were a northerner they would have asked for the rationale behind consolidation. If Sanusi were the one that consolidated they would have crucified him. Did Sanusi sack the banks' exco because he is a northerner? So southerners would rather allow the banks to go under with peoples businesses, funds and even lives? Was that why Soludo kept quiet? When it comes to issues like this i can't stand such sentiments. But then u may ask who is fooling who? Are we being fooled by the banks or is the government under the CBN fooling us? I say Nigerians should decide on a public hearing for all parties involved to have the opportunity to defend themselves before crucifixion and hopefully safeguard this from occurring in future. To HELL with the nanny story; search ur conscience and ask urself if u have ever received a favor simply becos u knew the right people the answer is YES! How do you get anything at all if not through your networks. Would the likes of Fola Adeola and Hakeem Bello invest in Next if Olojede does not know them. As long as due process was followed in the disbursement of the loan, I don't care who gets it. the woman you call a nanny from your story as at the time she secured the loan was not a nanny but the CEO of registered companies. stop sensationalism.

A story was read from google site credited to one of our media, Vanguard Newspaper on March 23,2009 which predicted all that was happening as if a script is being acted on. l think a reasonable Nigerian will investigate how true is the story. Insrtead of chasing shadows, carry news whose root cannot be traced, why can we all try to validate or refute the particular story. For those of you not aware of the story, you can read it from google site with this caption: Nigeria: Group plots to take over top 5 banks. You will be shocked to your marrow that to see that everything that have happened in the last two weeks and things still happening have been predicted like prophesy on march 23, 2009 in Vanguard Newspaper. l am yet to agree until l lay my hands on the copy of the paper or l read it from Vanguard website. Common guys, we are intelligent, we should separate chaff from wheat. We all should try to verying a story that has source not opinion of people that have no basis. If we continue the way you guys have done so far, we will all be accussing ourselves, abusing ourselves without facing the facts and realities. Please if you have read the story from Vanguard newspaper on 23/03/09 or you laid you hand on the copy, not the one posted on google because there could be mail fraud let start a revolution to evil people in this nation by lending your voice by condemning CBN action but if the story is vallacy then you should continue to believe in CBN. One good turn deserves another. The Nanny had served the Ibru family and giving her a loan for a new beginning from Nannyship to a Billionaire is a favor and a way of saying thank you. However, talking about whether the woman has a collateral is another thing. How are we sure she did not win a landslide Petroleum contract that she required a large bank loan to execute? i am sure she wouldn't have been given the loan just as a handout. In business, who you know is what matters at getting a contract and getting the money to execute the contract. Accusing Cecilia of stealing is outright nonsense because when the rich are having everything and a Nanny cannot, where then is the equality? What is supposed to matter here is what warranted the request for the loan and on what ground did the bank granted it? Is she servicing the instrument or not? And if she is not , what is the cause for her deliquency? In any case, the bank must have a procedure for recovering loans even from deliquents. It does not really mean that everyone granted loan would be able to repay without experiencing one problem or another and it is here that the issue about management of a loan portfolio comes in. Does it mean if any fool going about as a Millionaire is granted a loan and a Nanny is granted the the same, we would be bent on condemning the loan given the Nanny because of the title of her calling? Has a Nanny no right to transform her own life? When are we going to be free from the respect of persons and titles? The type of morality we are trying to force on banks is what we should impose on the governments in the country and not on a free private space and the running of private businesses. Succesive governments in Nigeria have evaded scrutiny. Now the current government wants to force what it has failed to do in its fight against corruption among public office holders on poor innocent Nigerians, when it is obvious it has lost direction in its effort to nail corrupt Public Officers whose acts of criminality in the first place led the nation into this precipice. Just as we expect the nanny to pay back her loan, let's exert same strength on those renegade former public office holders whose case is not of taking a loan, but one of outright stealing from the public treasury.

You can't even get N1m without handing over your entire kindred as collateral. So, let me ask: what collateral do you think that this Nanny put on the table to secure a N13b loan? There is a major flaw, people! NEXT, please dig deep and let us know what collateral is on the table. Except if the nanny handed over an entire village with its inhabitants (which might be possible going with what we can do in Naija) to Oceanic Bank as collateral to secure N13b, i am certain that this loan was meant to be a bad loan from day one. A loan based on sentiment is fraud on depositors' monies; Good people! Great Nation!! Please let us try to seperate real issues from sentiments. I am sure the news on the Ibru's by NEXT is no vengeance or anything as Oceanic has been classified as the biggest scam in the banking industry right now. No one asked NEXT questions when it was all about Otedola. No one asked NEXT questions when for two weeks running, it was about Chukwuma Soludo and his living large. I think NEXT is focused on exposing the sacred cows. Investigative journalism seems to be their biggest strength. Let them go ahead jare, the masses have long needed to get the real news under headlines usually glossed over by the other newspapers. Kai, I love gist and Nigeria is too big not have a big one on daily basis. GO NEXT, TELL US WHO'S NEXT!!!

These thieving bank MDs should be shot. Thank goodness for Sanusi. Soludo was heavily compromised.

It seems some people do not realise that the job of a newspaper is to deliver news. It is left to the reader to either accept or reject the information. If next has more scoops coming out of Oceanic bank then so be it. It is not supposed to be a case of "Brother Finland did it too, so why are we shouting at Sister Oceanic?" Instead of making this a tribal issue or PDP issue or family issue and making excuses for granting several non performing loans, Nigerians should ask why it is that the ordinary man with a sound business plan does not have bank support or access to all this free money that obviously the banks have to give their friends and family. Nigerians should be outraged. This is wrong! For so long we have blamed government, are we not afraid that our seemingly sound private banking sector is just as corrupt? Come on, let us look at facts. I dont care if this lady was a nanny or not. But did she borrow this money or not? What collateral did she provide before obtaining the said loan? What steps did the bank take to ensure her credit worthiness? This is all that "we" shd care about. What a shame!

The problem with NIGERIA is NIGERIANS. How some people reason beats my imagination. We are talking of 13 billion of depositors money giving away without any substantial collateral. This is the height of gross negligence and some people are playing ethnic, gender card. They are even now talking of personal vendetta. My people suffer for clear lack of knowledge.

Just wonder how a 51 year old woman could have been the nanny of a guy who just celebrated his 50th birthday? Nevertheless, no matter her pedigree, if she doesn't have collateral for her loan, then Mrs. Ibru should be jailed for 'insider' abuse!

God Bless Nigeria. something i would have loved is probing all the bank MDs at once and not using some as scapegoats,(allowed to be used MDs). Nigeria has become a nation where theater lives.

Posted by Trevor on Aug 26 2009

Unfortunately in this nanny hysteria only very few intelligent commentators have the gumption to ask if she wasn't merely a front. But it's still al very speculative and the investigators should be allowed to do their job without injecting further silliness such as the guy who claims the 51-year old nanny babysat a 50-year old man. Ken Imade's comments are pure politcs and there is nothing wrong with that. Unfortunately people who can't think through the issues are having a free go but again thats democracy and i don't have a problem with that.

Posted by Lamidi on Aug 26 2009

@Trevor, Oboden is just 42 not 50. Point of correction

Posted by Dayo on Aug 26 2009

What does it matter that this Nana woman was a nanny OVER THIRTY YEARS AGO (considering that Oboden is pushing 40+)?! Are we as Nigerians so backward that 'once a nanny, always a nanny'? Frankly, one is disappointed at the gossipy (and quite misogynistic) nature of some of these reports, in derogation of more SUBSTANTIVE (and important) matters: what was the role of the bank's credit committee? Are there concentration and/or credit limits for Nigerian banks? Etc. The truth is that the latest banking crises has exposed SYSTEMIC weaknesses in Nigerian banking (particularly in the regulatory regime), and reports like these merely add heat without shedding much light. Unfortunately, it appears that we are distracted with chasing rats while our house is on fire.

Posted by De Man on Aug 26 2009

Banking is all about taking risk. For me, i dont see anything wrong in giving out loan within the laid down policy. What you find in Oceanic Bank you wold find in any other bank. What i would have expected the CBN to do is to expose all the banks including the supposed 'cleared banks' And you would be surprised. This is a clear reflection of our the state of our society. Hence, teh solution is not about exposing the banks but to strengthen EFCC ICPC to cleanse the system accross board.

Posted by Dayo on Aug 26 2009

And speaking of SYSTEMIC weaknesses, those people here who have moaned about how difficult it is for a regular Joe to get a loan should realize that in the absence of credit bureaus (another glaring SYSTEMIC weakness) that banks and other lenders often have to resort to the unorthodox system of who they know. Until the CBN addresses these fundamental SYSTEMIC risk, Nigeria will remain akin to the farmer who found rats in his farm and chose to become a full-time rat chaser.

Somebody wrote above that he is a not a fan of the Ibrus (while nonetheless appearing to defend Mrs. Ibru), well I am an unapologetic fan of the Ibrus (without even personally knowing them). I remember when the Ibrus' principal business was selling frozen fish, and yet without taking a single government loan or handout they have since built a private business empire that currently EMPLOYS TENS OF THOUSANDS OF NIGERIANS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY! The Ibrus may not be perfect (who is?) and should be punished if and when they break the law (and poor risk management is not necessarily criminal), but I pointed refuse to join the lynch mob against them based on as-yet-unproven allegations.

The root fact about this matter is the truth. Only Mama and her executives in the banks that decided to give this Lady this large uncollaterated Loans can justify their actions. Was Abacha not selling the best of everything Nigeria had to his Family? Where were you then? We should not be in hurry to throw stones as the stones may fall back on us. Why are we Nigerians easily manipulated. The system which is control and driven by those in government is always used against us the general masses. Cecilia Ibru is a victim of the said system. A person with a good business plan without funds, if convincing enough that there is profit to be made can secure loan from the dare devil financier, don't forget the higher the risk the higher the profit. I don't know what Ms Ibru has done but i know there are people who are ready to go to any let in taking over her bank which she built and tarnish her reputation in the banking industry. I appeal to Nigerians not to believe everything they see or hear, sooner rather than later the fog will clear and the truth will be reveal and only then, we all Nigerians will realise that the system is only suppressing and oppressing this hard working lady guru of the Nigeria financial institution. Nigerians be weary of this Sanusi bank clean-up. Wise-up my country people.

People, the two times Mrs Bedell's name appeared on the debtor list, it was not as a director of her small company (Nanshet). It was for two other companies - LV Dev. Company and Circular Global Int. She was obviously used as a front for some reason, and the funds could not have gone for her personal consumption. Her name has been dragged through the mud for something she may know nothing about. A lot remains to be seen, and I will wait to hear the results of the ongoing audit before I cast my stone.

My people, this is why our system fails all the time. If you cannot grasp what is going on, how do we defend the laws of our land. No doubt there is something amiss with the banking industry, It is the same with our government! No matter what, the rule of law must prevail. The presumption of innocence until proven guilty must be upheld. There is no point arresting people, and then build your case after the arrest. The latter must come first. At this stage, this matter is a civil case, and when we have the criminal facts in hand, fine, we prosecute. Again, I do not doubt there is fraud in the system but let us be sure where to point our fingers!

Fellow Nigerians, as much as I hate to say this, it is obvious that part of the issue here is NOT only common sense but our countries literacy level, judging by some of the ignorant, or shall I say ill-informed comments above. Firstly Lamidi and Jon, I must applaud you on your comments above. Lamidi wrote “The issue is not giving a 13B loan to a nanny but that the loan is not performing. “ and Jon wrote “These are the facts published. the total amount outstanding at the EDW was N256 billion ($1.6 billion), most of which was owed by the five banks. These banks showed serious liquidity strain and had to be given financial support by the CBN ... Read more CBN then did a proper audit of the five banks. It found that the banks do not have the ability to meet the obligations of their depositors and creditors and that they are in a grave situation.” From the CBN’s investigations so far (regardless of bank ownership, northerners or southerners), some banks had made loans totalling billions, of which some were non-performing and/or due process not followed. If the nanny’s loan or the other debtors was performing and due process was followed then I believe she and the other debtors would not be on that list (Let’s not forget that there are other debtors in these banks whose names have not been published due to them servicing their loans) and even if she were due to some political mischief then she surely is in a better position to clear her name. Secondly, some of the ill-informed comments above mentioned that this has ethnic or religious connotations behind. Surely then, the ammunition to pursue their so called ethnic objectives was handed to them on a silver platter. If you run your bank well who do you have to fear? Could we constructive and focus on what the objective is here, bad management, bad risk mitigation techniques etc etc and not blame the messengers (Next and other papers), ethnicity or lack of entrepreneurship etc etc. These banks put themselves in this situation the money to bail them out could be better used for other badly needed projects. Think before you talk also applies to writing!

Lets not get carried away by this article. There is nothing wrong in advancing a loan to a business entity irrespective of the management composition provided they meet the lending criteria. That the MD was a former nanny is immaterial as far as I am concerned so long as she made profit for the organisation. Banks are set up to grant loans and it is much easier to get credit facility if you know the management of the bank. Jimoh Ibrahim, Oba Otudeko, Dangote etc also owe the bank, does that make them thieves. Let us be objective in our analysis. I am not from the Ibru family but I dont see anything wrong with giving a loan to a small business enterprise.OCeanic bank was know to be a good provider of credit to small and medium scaled enterprises. Anybody who had worked would know that banks make money by creating credit assets (loan, overdrfts etc) You may also wish to note that the business (Nanshet) has been in existence since 1990 and would have been making profits and paying back loans granted to her over the years. Some of the Loans CBN said were non-performing have been confirmed to be performing by the new management of the banks. Until the law proves someone guilty, lets not use our money to bring down people.

Posted by Paul Chuks - UK on Aug 28 2009

So Leman Brothers, Goldman Sacs , JP Morgan, Wakovia, Fanny and Fredie in USA, Lloyds TSB, Royal Bank of Scotland, Nothern Rock in UK that were all bailed out, was it because they were mismanaged? What caused the global recession? Was it not because people that took loans were not paying back? The same thing has happended in Oceanic bank and other institutions. The govt has done the right thing by injecting money into the weak banks pending when things improve. This has been done in many advanced economies such as USA, UK, Germany, France, China etc and they economies are beginning to show signs of recovery.

It is sad that we are so quick at politicising or tribalising issues of national importance at every excuse. The fact is that, monies in question does not belong to individual bank executives, (they are kept in their custody in trust) therefore absolute care must be taken in administering it. The unfotunate thing is that an average banker prefers to give the loan to 'so called' money bags or worst still foreigners who, in their own reckoning, have the capability and integrity to pay back, but what do we have, a bunch of smart and slippery businessmen who will take you to court for attempting to force them to pay what they owe. I do not feel any pity for the embattled CEOs. What they are reaping is the fruit of their actions and non-action when they had opportunity to spread such loans to thousands of small scale businesses who genuinely needed such monies. It is disheartening to know that all some businesses need to move to next level is between N20,000 and 100,000 but the question is, do they ever get any positive response from high and mighty bankers who would give every excuse in the book not to oblige them their request? The MD/CEOs got what they deserve. Imagine how many small business would have benefitted from N13 blllion - btw 130,000 and 650,000 small businesses who have about 70-95% repayment rate. We will continue to experience this type of scenarios for as long as our system does not recognise and help SMEs. As for the geo-political region under attack, let's stop the lame excuses - are the CEO clean? your guess is as good as mine. They are reaping the result of the risks involved in banking business, we all have ours, let them deal with it. To Sanusi, I'll say the northerners, the benues, the mid-westerners and the Igbos are no saints - spread the nets wider please!
