Sect leader killed

Print print Email email Share Share

Mohammed Yusuf, the leader of the Boko Haram sect that is said to be responsible for the violence across seven states of Nigeria, has been reported dead by the Nigerian police.

Mr. Yusuf was arrested this afternoon at Gamboru Ngala, a border town between Nigeria and Chad, by Nigerian troops where he was fleeing in company of his other followers.

He was wounded and taken to Giwa barracks, Maiduguri, where he, reportedly, died of his wounds on Thursday evening.

His deputy was killed, on Thursday morning, during an onslaught on the group's camp in Maiduguri, which led to the death of about 100 members.

Mr. Yusuf was arrested last year by the State Security Service and handed over to the police who arraigned him at an Abuja high court. The court, in November 2008, granted him bail.

It is good news to hear that Mohammed Yusuf who brought much violence and death in some parts of northern Nigeria is now out of circulation for good.

Posted by Musty on Jul 31 2009

Why kill Mohammed Yusuf? There are vital questions that only he can answer. What are his sources of income and weapons and how did he organise and operate his group of fanatics well enough to spring a surprise on our security agancies. Answers that may well be an expose on our security agencies, no wonder!

Yes, the sect is despecable, but isnt this killing by secutity operatives, an indictment on Nigerian forces? coming just after a stackling declaration by Human right watch a couple of weeks ago how Nig security forces killed civillians in the last November protest in Jos. And figure of causaulty coming from the nothern in the last fours leaves one in no doubt that civilianas are amongst. shouldnt someone face prosecution for extra-judicial killings as displayed by the security forces? 9ja is just sick

To kill someone in police custody is a disturbing development for Nigeria’s judiciary and this case raises a lot of questions. Why was it necessary to rush to kill him? Was he trying to escape? Was he silenced to keep him from fingering the sponsors? Was his death the result of mob action or was he executed by the police? I used to think that here in Nigeria we subscribe to the legal principle that one is innocent until proven guilty. This poor fellow’s death and that of others involved in this mayhem ought to be carefully investigated and report presented to the nation. The fellow is obviously confused, but two wrongs do not make a right. To kill someone in police detention is not, and should never be, acceptable. He should have been given the opportunity to defend himself in the court law and then allow justice to take its course. His death is unfortunate as the nation has been denied the opportunity to probe his deranged mind and learn from it.

Good news, the man was killed. It'd have been better if he was kept alive to be interrogated. His men should be properly questioned for information on the group. Kudos to our security forces, I only hope that we didn't record too many civilian casualties as is the case many times.

The security agencies appear to have done their jobs way back in 2008 by arresting and arraigning Mohammed Yusuf in court as reported. Unfortunately the court didn't do its job. That error in judgement and all the pretence, loop-sided and sheepish advocacy to human right principles in NIgeria has cost innocent lives. Go preach that to the families of the security men and innocent Nigerians who lost their lives in an unprovoked and senseless attack. If Yusuf trully believed his perverse doctrine why was he running away from battle that he pushed his followers into? His death is good radiance to bad rubbish. The country has more than enough wahala to contain with already.

Posted by Francis B.Daniels on Jul 31 2009

I am not surprised that Yusuf died in police custody from "his wounds". We get to know of this only becuase of his role in the extremist mayhem visited on some cities in the north. Each single day, countless number of people lose lives and limbs to the Nigeria police and other security agencies-in some cases, over thrumped up charges. At this stage, all Nierians should be really worried. In other countries, the death of fanatical leaders like Yusuf have been known to be source of greater fanaticism and vengeance strikes. The kind of international attention that the death got is already an advert to the genuine cells of Al-Qaeda and Taliban to now recruit or regroup the followers that were able to flee. There are more things to worry about. But will the government reason, will Aso Rock probe the extra judicial killings in the North West in the past one week, will Nigerians be allowed to have access to the report from such probe? How soon before we see this kind of carnage transfered to militants who are stupid enough to accept Aso Rock's amnest offer to militants?...Just how did we get into this mess?

Instead of engaging in amorous relationship with teenagers, they should better the lot of their subjects. Many Govrnors think they are elected to just dole out money for their godfathers. If the youth are adequately taken care of, it will be difficult for any exremist to hoodwink them into criminality. Well, Yusuf is dead but who is the next rabble rouser? Remember matatzini sect during shagari era? Our security agents need to wake up! Taking N20 from motorist with gone make mess of their profession. Enough for the wise.

Conveniently executed ... to stop questions , probes and inquries ! Quite a lot could have been swept under the carpet .

Posted by Timi L-A on Jul 31 2009

Where do we draw the line between lawlessness and law enforcement. The fact that the Boko Haram sect ran foul of the law is indisputable, but how can we condone extra judicial killings under any guise? The smart move would have been to interrogate the man and get to the root of the problem but then again, the Nigerian Police are not reputed for ingenuous thinking!! Now we will never know how they got their ammunition, the people behind them et al. Thanks to the quick fix approach of the police, we have postponed the evil day. If anyone believes the movement has died with Mr. Yusuf, then the person is deluded. The people that made Mr. Yusuf will always get another willing puppet to further their agenda. The Boko Haram killed innocent individuals- True. The Nigerian security forces killed innocent individuals-True. So why then are we celebrating? Are they very much different form one another? I weep for the families of the law abiding citizens of this country whose taxes have paid for the bullets that the security forces have used to truncate their lives!!

How was he set free by an Abuja court? who were the visible and invisible facilitators ? ONOVO , if you have the support and liver , investigate and provide the answers. But if THEY say NO, old boy livam for God.

So he was 1. Arrested - was he resisting arrest? 2. Deliberately wounded - was he injured in combat or brutalized? 3. Taken to the hospital 4. Died of his wounds. Your report is very inaccurate and confusing. The account presented here is very misleading. Your title says he was killed. The story says something else - that he died of his wounds. Could you try to be more accurate and non-sentimental in presenting stories, Just give us the facts and let us make our own judgments. In summary this story is tainted with a suggestion by your reporter that the man was killed!

Posted by Ernest Anani on Jul 31 2009

Does it matter HOW the 'Boko Haram' leader was killed? Have you folks thought of the interest of the larger society? You mean police should arrest him and arraign him before a Nigerian court (again!) and the next day he would come out a free man in questionable circumstances (again!)and once more gather momentum to unleash terror and brigandage on the people of Nigeria. If this happens, it would amount to availing him of the same western-style justice system he so violently fought against! The Nigerian Police understand how our courts operate. They can get details of how they funded their operations from the other jihadists in their custody. It was a good thing the police wasted the bastard. No tears for him. Imagine him still alive in detention! Of course more people will die as he would continue to be an inspiration to those who listened to his rubbish.

Posted by Akanni Ezekiel on Jul 31 2009

We thank God that the violence has come down but i think Muhammed Yusuf should have been overpowered, arrested and ask him vital questions so that we can know those behind him before he face his penalty. How do we sure is the one and how do we belief there is no kangaroo. Well i pray this type of group "Boko Haram" "devil agents" who have been in existence for the past 14 years will not re-group and cause a fatal mayhem again if by laxity government has failed to tracked down this group in the bud even after when a christian leader in the north has complained about 3 months ago that there were some people training in the bush as a militant. There is no checkmate at our border. Chadians and niger people enter into our country anyhow to be used as hooligans and thouts by the affluence northerners politicians. Immigration at border must be efficient enough especially Niger and chad border including seme border to curb the entry of these guys used to forment troubles by attacking christians and now the securities of the nation. May God help us

Posted by UnklGee on Jul 31 2009

Boko haram indeed! but his life style is defined by the trappings of western education! extra judicial killings will always be an issue world over. It is certainly an indictment of any system that pretends to the rule of law. However perfect any system may be it still occurs if only far between. lets not pretend, while not giving our security agencies any kudos, it is their incompetence that allowed Yussuf to find space to wreak havoc, we must still admit that his death is good riddance to bad rubbish, however it may have come about! What amazes me sha, is why these people and militants seem incapable of identifying who the real enemies of Nigeria are and turning their guns on them!

Posted by Anne M. on Jul 31 2009

He died in police custody after sustaining gun shot wound is merely a diplomatic way to say he was given the capital punishment without trial after making himself hard to catch. I guess the soldiers were thinking of the attacks, the innocent lives lost... and decided to save the country Naira that would have gone into a court trial which may have him back on the streets after a long back and forth. Still, questions raised by Musty and others need to be answered. I bet Mohammed Yusuf's top aides will gladly do so in exchange for their lives. May God grant us peace in Nigeria.

Posted by Reno on Jul 31 2009

It's good to get an end to this situation - this guy was pure bad news. Like all taliban/extremists, they use religion as a shell for power. But Nigeria continues to show a complete lack of process or due process. The soldiers/police might have felt justified with a summary execution, but isn't that what the Taliban stands for? Control to the point of death, with no process, simply those with power and guns. You realize that at any time your life is simply at the mercy of some police officer with a gun. These are the kinds of craziness that drove me away. Crazy Taliban, Crazy Police, Crazy Military, Crazy rulers.

These Human Rights groups are sometimes funny. Somebody is armed to the teeth to hew down innocent citizens, and somebody I assume is a human being is asking 'How do we educate our people'! Posted by Blaise on Jul 31 2009

Well as it stands i am in complete support of eliminating this virus from our society. I really dont care about interogating him to find out the whom his sponsors are and where his weapons and funds come from. There is really no point keeping this miscreant alive to go thru our totally and completely corrupt judiciary system. As far as i am concerned the police either know by now who his sponsors are and as usual are hiding it or they should complete the job by investigating the remaining members of his sect that they have in custody to know who their sponsors are and hopefully make the results known to all Nigerians. If the bastard were kept alive and in custody his brain washed followers would have been making serious aggitations on the outside to get him back and this could easily lead to more mayhem and havoc wrecked on innocent lives. Again if he is allowed to go thru prosecution, chances are that he would-after a very long winding prosecution intended to mislead Nigerians from the fact, be once again set free. But just incase he is found guilty and publicly executed, he would become some sort of martyr or at least to his followers who would have viewed him as dying for a cause he really beleives in rather than being killed for criminal activities. This would lead to a situation where we will find more unscrupulous miscreants being inspired by this virus who is now a martyr. These inspired miscreant will then go ahead to continue with the works of their leader. So in any case and however you choose to look at it, Nigerians are better of with him dead. Keeping him alive leads to too many unacceptable options that will ultimately result in inoocent lood being shed.

Just as Dapso rightly said, i have always maintained and preached my stand that 'NIGERIA' cannot work, we are only deceiving ourselves and the earlier we embrace the truth, the better, it just hurts to see nothing working after almost 50years of independence. There is no need for a volient separation or the so called revolution some people are calling for. We simply should set up a 'separation conference' consisting of probably the existing legislature and legal branch of govt, they will sit and agree on separation, sharing of govt properties, local and foreign funds, then we say a 'happy' good bye to each other, in our quest to out do each other, the newly formed separate zones will be extra productive and disciplined which will result in gains to all parties, bilateral relationships will exist if we want. We are really fooling ourselves to think 'e go beta'...i have been hearing this 'e go beta' slogan for over 30 years now and we continually hope on a song and prayer that it is well....as Nigeria is almost 50yrs in existence and we still think foolishly that all is well, we will only jettison the great future of our children and children's children if ACTION is not taken NOW!

Posted by dedan on Jul 31 2009

i support the extra-judicial execution of that mad leader of Boko Haram. To let him live is to make him a hero.Religious passion can be intoxicating.Islam itself forbids extremism, even in matters of faith. There are countless traditions in the Hadiths of the Holy Prophet(SAW) regarding that.He must be very foolish to think he can take on the state with such a crude doctrine coated with violence and survive.Govt.should henceforth react swiftly to any such matter in any part of the country.

They need the western education as well as the Islamic education. I also think that some highly placed Moslems have prior knowledge of this TALIBANISTIC ACTION before it was hatched, otherwise, they would have been the major targets instead of the Government and the Christians.

I am really surprised by the barbarity displayed in much of the preceding comments. As usual, Nigerians will comment without understanding the full situation and without realising the damage their utternaces can cause. Mr Yusuf was captured by the Nigerian army who handed him over without any hassle to the Nigerian police. An hour later, the Nigerian police claim he was shot while trying to escape and here 'the people' are, jubilating. Did he not deserve a trial? On television reports, gunshot victims are seen, forced to the ground to be paraded before journalists and you are all happy as if the Nigerian Police is not well known for false accusations. Jubilate properly. One day, it will be your turn.

In case of next time the soldiers should not be in a hurry to kill such persons untill more informations has gotten from him.

That the sect leader is dead is good news, but no pictures of him or the corpse was shown as a proof. can we just take the police report at that...and for boko haram to have gone that far has shown how much lapses we have in our security, infact this is failure of intelligence on the side of the security personels or else how could an illiterate like muhammed yusuf could have been able to organise and coordinate a sect like that with arms and ammunitions cut across 7 states of the federation without the security noting any arms build up anywhere...
