The Nigerian President, Umaru Musa Yar' Adua

Governors condemn calls for Yar'Adua's resignation

The Nigeria Governors' Forum yesterday described as diversionary calls that President Umaru Yar'Adua resign.

The governors, in a statement issued after their meeting yesterday at the Kwara State Government Lodge in Abuja, commended the Federal Executive Council led by the Vice President, Goodluck Jonathan, for providing a sense of leadership which shows that the government was alive.

The statement, however, described the calls for the President resignation as unconstitutional.

"Constitutionally, in the absence of any evidence of incapacitation on the part of the President, it is precipitate and diversionary to call for Mr. President's resignation," the governors said in the statement.

"It is on this basis that the Nigeria Governors' Forum considers the call for Mr. President's resignation as a betrayal or a lack of respect for the Constitution and the system of government of this country."

The statement, while making reference to a paid advert published in the Leadership Newspaper calling on the president to resign, noted that "it was gratifying to note that some of the people who were purported to have signed the advert have already dissociated themselves from such call."

The governors, therefore, expressed their "firm commitment to the peace, progress and stability of the Federal Republic of Nigeria." They also wished Mr. Yar'Adua "quick recovery as he continues to lead our country."

A group of 56 prominent Nigerians from diverse backgrounds, but mostly politicians and civil society activists had on Wednesday December 2, in a strongly worded statement released to the media had called on the president to resign in light of his failing health.

However, the call has been variously condemned by members of the government. The governors' criticism of the call was preceded by that of members of the Federal Executive Council.

Yesterday, after the Federal Executive Council meeting, the Ministers of Information and communications, Dora Akunyili said the Federal Executive Council believes that "the president has not been found incapable of discharging his functions" and that "all organs of government are functioning and that government will continue to deliver."

Governors? Who are they? Are those the robbers in 36 Nigerian cities? So they think about things other than stealing?

THIS IS NOT A MATTER FOR SENTIMENT ,THE MAN IS CLEARLY UNWELL..WHAT THESE POLITICAL PUNDITS ARE DOING IS GENTLY PUSHING THE MAN TO HIS DEATH

We can do better, it appears we have a standard stand still on issues of poverty and development...if providence wills, Yar'adua must or may not come back.Dear Governors please get working as your inability in helping out your varoius States out of poverty is playing loud and should more concern us all! Yar'adua is a stage in our national life, we must someday pass over him...for now, lets drink him while it last.

"We wish Mr. President, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, GCFR, quick recovery as he continues to lead our country." FROM SAUDI ARABIA

Posted by WOLE AKINLEYE on Dec 04 2009

What else do we expect the governors to say as Yar Adua's resignation may trigger off a crisis that will sweep away the whole 4th republic which of course means the end of their own jobs as well. The call does not mean they love the sickly president but a form of self preservation.

Posted by Someoneq on Dec 04 2009

Why do you expect your unwell President to resign, when infact the VP can take over? Would you want your unwell father to leave all his possessions to you, rather than wishing him well?

Posted by Mr. Goody Goody on Dec 04 2009

The Governors did not disappoint. Self preservation is it. One day be one day, monkey go go market and e no go return.

It quit obvios our president Ya' Adua is not in good condition, as such is not longer fit to carry out the helm of affair of this country, therefore, i advice he step aside for the betterment of this country. All the PDP Governors objecting his resination have their selfishness reasons.

"Constitutionally, in the absence of any evidence of incapacitation on the part of the President, it is precipitate and diversionary to call for Mr. President's resignation," So let the president produce evidence he has the 'capacity.'

plus, this drama is going on for too long jo. something shld happen. UMORU pls come back, or resign and handover to ur vice.

Posted by Abutu on Dec 04 2009

There is nothing unconstitutional about the calls for the President to resign on grounds of ill health. A constitutional question arises if steps are being taken to remove or 'retire' the President against his wish, on gounds of ill health or otherwise. The Governors should read the constitution again.

My good president shld not alloy the governors and ministers to kill him, the only way to survive this illness is to remain in bed rest for at least six month Abeg mr Umoru no allow this govnrs and ministers waste u jst give batton to the one wen e get goodluk. That is Jona if u add tan na u sabi.

President Yar' Adau's situation and the call for his resignation is most unfortunate. It speaks volume of the fact that the nation is hanging on a loose balance. We should drop these ethno-religious and parochial interests and considerations to look at this issue at hand objectively, the health of our president. This man is one of us, our president whether he came to power by divine design or accident. Let's pray for President Yar' Adua. On the issue of succession, if he volunteers to resign, the constitution is clear on this. It has nothing to do with whether power currently resides in the North or South. I wish to advise all these shallow minded individuals working hard to over heat the polity to desist from such unpatriotic acts. Let's pray for President Yar' Adua

Shame to all the 36 states governor in nigeria, they are all enemy of truth for condemn calls for sick yar`adua`s resignation,I don`t known what the problem with that country call nigeria, why are we backward in everything we do.

Posted by michael on Dec 04 2009

yaradua should not listen to all those calling for his resignation,(enemies of progress!)He should keep moving Nigeria forward at the fantastic speed he is doing! He should rule and rule even after his death he should keep ruling!

Shame on these vampires who call themselves governors and yet cannot govern. There is a vacuum as the VP has no authority to take decisions and these thieves want the nation to continue without any direction. The deputy senate president has even said that Umaru can remain in hospital for up to one year and nothing will happen to his seat. What a jaundice and stupid remark from someone who is supposed to preserve the sanctity of the Nigerian constitution. DP of the senate had forgotten that when Umaru went to Saudi Arabia in August for medical checkup, his senate chamber refused to recognise the VP in an acting capacity because the president did not transmit the acting mandate to them. So if the nation must have to drift for one year without anyone to direct its course, there is no need to worry according to the DP of the senate. These are the people who make this nation looks like a nation of lepers. House of Rep. who have self styled themselves integrity group have come to support directionnless drfiting of the country. That Farouk was speaking the mind of the corrupt north, for if they have what is called integrity, they should support good governance based on our contitutional provisions. But let all of them know that the time of deliverance of the nation is at hand, and they will all be brought to judgment as many of them as have stlen the corporate resources of this nation. We are at a turning point for the progress of our land. God bless Nigeria.

If this is not evident of a failed state, what is? A country in which the President cannot seek and get medical care. Think of the national security implications. Chances are, the president is being treated by his fellow Nigerians who are economic refuges in Saudi Arabia. What a shame. Wake up people, wake up!

THE SICK PRESIDENT SHOULD LEAVE THE OFFICE AND ATTEND TO HIS HEALTH THAT HE HAS BEEN DOING SINCE 1987 FOR COMPETENT PEOPLE---YOUNG ONES

Posted by Small Fry on Dec 04 2009

Yar'Adua may not be well but can we please focus on far more important relevant matters to the nation like the failed promised of power generation. Please media continue to ask those incompetent kleptos in power those difficult questions about implementation, policy and real achievement on the ground more so as they would love to discuss trivia about Yar'Adua while Goodluck is there to do the job.

ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT WE ARE ALL WATCHING AND SPECTATORS IN THE FIELD OF NIGERIAN PLAYGROUND. TIME AND CHANCE WILL TELL IF OGA PRESIDENT IS FIT OR UNFIT FOR THE POST PRESENTLY, BUT res ipsa loquitor

Good people of nigerian dont listen to them blcos they are the same thing bird of the same feather, how see where flies vote againts wounded saws or ventures againts die animals, the answer NO.

Posted by Adedayo on Dec 04 2009

Yar'adua is sick in the body while the governors and the FEC are sick in the head.

Posted by naija4live on Dec 04 2009

But come to think of it, i do not wish to have a VP like Jonathan. He is always a badluck to his boss. Maybe that is why the FEC and Governors are fightntg against his goodluck. He should contest for an election if he wants to lead and not hide behind people and be a source of badluck to them. But whether they like it or not, nigeria is a moving train and will crush all those selfish politicians who are standing on our way of progess. Long live Nigeria!

the defence that umoru should continue despite his failing health is not for the love of the man but to preserve the positions, especially the ministers as they will all go with yaradua.its unfortunate our poeple in power dont face reality and no that time is up for the man called yaradua.God save nigeria.

Posted by wole agbo, esq on Dec 04 2009

day by day,we realise that akunyuli does not have the reputation she pretend to have.only poeple like themselves will agree with her that we cannot say that the president is incapable of acting.well even when he was not hospitalised he was only holding the position and not acting so it does not make any difference.we are not deceived and one day.....

Posted by Calculus Cajan on Dec 05 2009

We are sorry for the president's ailment, but its so unfortunate that our governors are only thinking about POWER and not even his health. The govt recently denied his being very status but now its getting even worse. Infact only his wife visits him and has been in ICU for some days now. Why are the physicians now considering transfer to the US, are they just realizing that health and religious sentimentalism is completely useless for the president and Nigeria? well, on my opinion, Nigeria i beyond One man. HE should go on leave on account of his health because he is too ill to hold a great country like Nigeria on ransom.

Posted by Wilson 4rm abuja on Dec 05 2009

It dat all d man gets 4 leading our ailing nation on a gradual but sure recovery?Wishes for death and resignation?Na wa o!Lets accept d truth in his ill-health he has served us better than all d healthy past leaders put 2geda

Posted by Edidiong Enoh on Dec 06 2009

Wat does the governors know abt the constitution? Just bunch of lazy thieves, passing judgement just to their favor. I wish our president good health but the truth is, if He is uncapable anylonger, he should resign. No sentiments here, it's constitutional and for the good of the national too.

Posted by ANOKWURU ND on Dec 06 2009

SINCE THE FEDERAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL BELIEVES HE IS GOOD TO CARRY ON I THINK THOSE BEHIND THE CALL FOR HIS RESIGNATION SHOULD WAIT TILL THERE A GOOD EVIDENCE OF INCAPABLITY TO DISCHARGE HIS FUNCTIONS AS A PRESIDENT.

Posted by NORO on Dec 06 2009

mister president you have great for our country and i wish you quick recovery and i pray for the betterment of Nigeria and anyone that is trying to push himself to the seat to rule Nigeria for his selffish interest, he will die before his time.

Posted by Konkontagbe on Dec 07 2009

When the head is sick the whole body is sick, I think all the governors and ministers also need medical check up because, if they are not also sick they will not be holding such view that all is well with the president, and that he has not waned in the discharge of his duty as a president, when it is obivious that all is falling apart. Anyway, everybody has got right to hold whatever view, since they all profit in wrong doing.

Posted by Julie Sanusi-Williams on Dec 09 2009

It is so sad that sick people are leading a sick nation. What is so unconstitutional about asking a man who is so unwell and hence unable to carry out his constitutional duty a a president to resign? Many of these so called governors are so selfish and uninformed on constitutional matters and governance that their opinions on issues affecting Nigeria are totally irrelevant. The quote that the governors expressed their "firm commitment to the peace, progress and stability of the Federal Republic of Nigeria" is so out of place. Empty proclamation about peace, progress and stability does not lead to those laudable objective. Rather these are achieved by scruplous adherence to the words and spirit of the Consititution. I would hope that these selfish and thieving governors would, at least, read and appreciate part of the Nigeria's Constitution which deals with presidential powers and succession, and how his or her inability to carry-out his responsibilities is dealt with. At what point does a sitting vice-president come in to run the affairs of the government when the sitting president is incapable, as it is the case now. The statements of these governors on this matter shows that using stolen to buy governorships does not translate into ability to govern or to understand the affairs of the state or country. It is fact this that every objective observer of refers to as the "Nigerian tragedy."

Please let's just fear God and allow Him to control the affairs of this nation.

God know what he is doing,we should give him more time and allow him to rule.are we blind when we put him into this post, so he should not resign, lets pray for him.

Posted by Amadi Goodluck on Dec 13 2009

President Yar'Adua has gone a long way in the development of Nigeria and his resignation will lead to the demise of certain goals he has set to achieve. All NIGERIANS should pray for him.

Posted by daddyfeelings on Jan 11 2010

I must say dat we should not be miss lead by those who seek for their own interest nor belle calling for a vote of no confidence on mr president , God must interven he know what will be and nor circustance is beyond his controll ,,,,,,,,
