As anxiety builds up in Abuja on the uncertain status of President Umaru Yar Adua’s health, the Attorney General of the Federation, Michael Aondoakaa, has become the lightning rod in a new campaign to coral a loyal constituency around the presidency and demonise opponents.

According to Section 144 of the Nigerian Constitution, if by a resolution of two-thirds majority of all the members of the federal executive council, it is declared that the president or vice-president is incapable of discharging the functions of his office, a medical panel would be established to conduct an examination and report to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives of such infirmity of body or mind that has incapacitated him from discharging the functions of his office.

Since President Yar’Adua’s personal physician, Salihu Banye, openly declared last week that the president is suffering from “acute pericardities,” the leadership of the country’s executive and legislative arms that are supposed to determine the fate of the office have remained loudly silent on the issue.

Senior administration officials have, however, contained their anxiety and lack of direction by calling for prayers for the president’s health, but Mr. Aondoakaa, speaking to journalists recently in Makurdi, Benue State, described as immoral, calls by the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Rotimi Akeredolu, that the president submit himself for medical assessment in the interest of the country, and that if not strong enough to perform the functions of his office, he should resign.

“While other Nigerians are praying for his (Yar’Adua’s) quick recovery, the NBA President is thinking differently and that is immoral,” stated Mr. Aondoakaa, calling the NBA president’s comments “insensitive”.

“The call is in bad faith because the spokesman of Mr. President gave a graphic medical account of the President from his personal physician,” Mr. Aondoakaa added, saying, instead “the NBA president should resign first” because, as he claimed, “there is nothing in the constitution that says somebody holding public office should not fall sick.”

But Mr. Akeredolu fired back at Mr. Aondoakaa yesterday, accusing the nation’s chief law officer of wilful distortion and warning him not to “bite more than he can chew”.

Debunking the allegation

“When they asked me about the state of his health and this and that, I said I am not his doctor; I don’t know whether he is strong and I don’t want to speculate. But I said that he should submit himself for medical assessment in the interest of the country and that if by the medical assessment result, he is not strong enough to perform the function of his office, then he should resign,” Mr. Akeredolu clarified yesterday.

Disinformation campaign

Two senior administration officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed frustration and helplessness, describing Mr. Aondoakaa’s current interventions as “no better than disinformation and propaganda to serve his own ends.”

On Wednesday last week, when rumours went wild that the president had passed on, Mr. Aondoakaa issued a statement from his office expressing “great shock and dismay the rumours making the rounds about the state of health of Mr. President”, claiming that the president had merely gone to Saudi Arabia for “routine medical check”.

Mr. Aondoakaa, who suggested that he was in constant touch with the President in Jeddah, added that “It is unfortunate that cynics always read meanings to the movement of the President, especially whenever he travels outside the country.” His statement was signed by his Special Assistant, Onov Tyuulugh.

Top government officials, however, told NEXT yesterday in Abuja that Mr. Aondoakaa was flatly peddling falsehood to the nation, and that he had not secured presidential access for a while.

This Dandokan of a man knows that it's a matter of time and his ass will be out of there. He represents everything Nigerian leaders are: no sense of direction, corrupt, inept, and deceitful. It's a matter of time, crooked fella. Your time is about to be up, evil one. For the life of me, why would the exec council, appointed by the prez, and whose continued existence depends on the continued governance of the prez determine whether the prez should be removed? It shows how gaulible Nigerians are. These people really need a constitutional amendment.

In the interest of the Nigerian state, I am of the strong opinion that the Attorney General of the Federation should not try to play politics with the health of Mr. President. For God's sake and for the sake of Mr. President's health, in times like this, fervent prayers should be made for God's speedy intervention. This is not the time to put selfish interest above national interest. This is not the time to point accusing fingers.Rather, this is the time to be sober and vigilant, asking God to take charge of the seat of power, before some faceless elements around the corridors of power take advantage of the situation on ground and hijack the reins of government for their self-centred interest. God save Nigeria!

9ja for life. The problems of the Nigerian Judiciary is not enough for Aondoaka, that he has now become the presidential spokesperson and apologist. Let the truth be told ,the wahala bedeviling this country has surpassed emotional bladerdash. Yar'Adua is sick and unfit to rule a country with such a myraid of intricacies. He,PDP and his apologists should resign and give Nigeria a chance.

@paquito bites You must be very stupid to call the nation's chief law officer a buffoon. Aondoakaa is only doing what a responsible public servant is suppose to do. So if now everytime a president has a headache or runny stomach we ask him to resign, how many presidents are we going to have in four years? If you cannot pray for the president, your silence will be better appreciated than your ignorance.

Please ask me. What is immoral about saying exactly what the Constitution says. The more the Justice Minister speaks, the more it becomes obvious that he was a wrong choice for the office in the first place. He would be out soon.

Mr Adonkaa (or whatever his name is) has the kind of face you want to slap. To top that, everytime he opens his mouth to speak, you just cringe because years after assuming his role as A-G, he is yet to come up with anything that makes you stop and think "hmm, what a clever man!". I suppose he is the typical candidate for a top nigerian public post looking at our unfortunate history.

While taking seriously the president health situation we must also realise that Nigeria interst as a nation supercedes that of any individual. It will be very candid of Mr. president to resign and have his peace because the problems of Nigeria is just too much and can even worsen his health status. Aoodonka will never want him to resign because that will mean he will also be going home sooner than he thinks.

Starting from AG Aandonkaa onwards, this group of ministers has to rank among the WORST cabinet ever to grace (or more precisely, disgrace) any Nigerian federal govt.

Make dis people allow Yar Adua go home and enjoy the rest of his life with family. Politics/Presidency is not a do or die affair. I would want to believe that his family will want him more alive than being bugged down with running a corrupt government. Let the PDP cheiftains restrategise and do something urgent. It is absolutely unfair to be pusshing this man forward when we all know his health is not the best. Sir, I do wish you the best of good health and a quick recovery. Also i will suggest you put a succession plan in place then listen to family and the voice of wisdom ..go home and rest. Nigeria will do well whether you are there or not.

This is indeed a defining season for Nigeria. How this season is handled will determine whether this nation will move forward or backward. We are praying for president Yaradua to recover from his illness. He is a kind man and he truly love his country. At a great risk to his health he was saddle with an awesome responsibility to lead a nation like Nigeria. But he could not deploy the full blast of his energy to get the nation moving forward.Indeed he had little energy left to spare since his illness is taking much of his strength. A sick person does not pray for a wife, or house or money.Neither does he has all the time to concentrate and work. All the focus of a sick person is on how the pains in his body would be mitigated. This is the stack reality of Nigeria president. Let the truth be told, it was NOT HIS WILL to be president of Nigeria. Someone forced or impose him on the nation. He was an unwilling horse. We say President Yaradua resign, concentrate on your health and enjoy the rest of your days. It is overburden to be thinking about your health and still be thinking about fuel scarcity, Strikes, light off etc. This will continue to tell on your health. Resign for someone who can focus all his energy to think solution to the challenges Nigerians are facing. There is nothing to fear except fear itself. This is a painstaking decision. Nigerians has been through terrible situations, dealth of Abacha and Abiola etc and the Almighty God has always seen us through. Nigeria can handle your resignation and we would all be better for it.

All nigerian politicians are selfish. from the president to the ag and down to some of the activists. Well we can talk all we like no one will change things they will do what they like cause 'nigeria belongs to them' Ultimately no one gets away with evil and lies especially when it has persisted for too long. And to think they r even trying to get Goodluck to resign so anor election can be held is appaling and fraudulent. All the NBA president is saying is this let the president be evaluated so we know whats next cause he is earning money for a duty he is always away from and i bet he claims the travelling expenses from nigeria. anywayz all i can conclude is that we have a national prayer day for a better future for our children and grand children and a better nigeria. also i heard his wife said that what better position for her hubby to die than as the president of a country so she wld rather have him dead as the president of the country than at home resting with her. men pick ur wivves carefully and wisely in the wisdom of the Almighty God!

Non of these should be sensationlised; my only worry is that a gang is holding this President hostage. Not for the common good but for their selfish interests - whatever that is. President Yaradua needs to resign, return to pivate life and give his health all the needed attention. There is nothing more previous than life not even presidential power. Goodluck, may as well cut his luck short and not get caught in the crossfire that is slowly, but surely brewing at aso Rock. We have heard all sorts of rumours thsu far -Senate President will be next president -Turai is being prepared to take over -Goodluck does not have a constituency and because in the past, Nigerians have been offered, and have accepted, in principle, all sorts of impossible and imaginable propositions, these ones may also come to pass. Yar'adua should have resigned from the campaign period before or heed his daughter's advice to resign and take care of his health, than putting up this confusion in the country. Experts say, he needs at least three transplants to survive, who knows if this will work, though I wish him well, but ipso facto, we need a capable hand to run that office. Maybe thats why there is so much stealing & corruption around the apex office, with no one to check them...Section 145 of the constitution has already been spelt out by Sagay, if there is no written document to the two arms of govt. we should wait for some time while Goodluck acts "as President" not "Acting President". Pending the document or recovery of Yar'adua... Lets stop this war of words sending out wrong impressions and spoiling the polity. The minds of Nigerians are really hearing & reading so many baldadash as it is now...

Floriana, you call somebody stupid for describing Andoka as a buffoon (a most apt and charitable description). WOW! Clearly you have no brains! Calling you stupid or buffoon is to do you credit. Especially with your brainless analogy of likening ya Ardua's condition to simple running stomach and head ache! You are a symbol of all that is wrong with Nigeria. A total absence of the sense of what is good and right. Yes what you have written is your opinion. You are indeed entitled to it. But an opinion is not always reality and if you dont know the reality with which we are now faced in Nigeria, it is a waste of time putting it to you. You will still not know it even if it bundled you and cast you in an assylum where you and your ilk belong. And then you quote proverbs 26:4&5. The devil himself quotes scripture. I will not look it up, lest I be persuaded by your demented logic!

Who is greater, the Nation or the office of the President,Courageous and patriotic people die for their NATION and not the reverse.a Sick President does not mean our Nation is sick,GOD is the healer of all infirmities, let the sick one(s) pray to GOD for healing, let him atone for his sins so that his prayer will not be hindered. It is funny that our constitution & electoral acts does not provide for medical screening and certificate of health for public office holder, sooner or later people with certified terminal disease(s) will rule over this NATION under our corrupt electioneering oh sorry selectioneering system:recalled that OBJ certificate of well being is been put to questioning,"Umoru them say you don die;na true"....above all GOD save our NATION and let your will be done ,not the will of MEN.Mrs President..please appeal to Mr Presido to give way to attend to his health,on behalf of my family we all wish him God`s mercy and speedy recovery.

@Paquito Bites, thank you. That Aondokaa is a SAN can only be explained by some sort of federal character or quota system for SANs. Disgraceful.

Every time Aondoaka speaks, you will always notice self interest in his speaches. It is always too glaring. Is he really a trained lawyer?. Aondoaka is a deadly man and should be watched closely. I have never seeing in him the ethics of a professional, he must have bought his ways into every of what he is today. I pity his tomorrow.

Why r we worrying ourselves about the president's state of health? is it not a 'do or die affair'?

It is strange how people cried out loud when rumours made the rounds that Jonathan was being forced to resign but nobody sees anything wrong in every Tom, dick and Harry breathing resignation down Yar Adua's back. Let the poor man be, if he can't go on with the job he would definitely throw in the towel. But to arm twist him into surrendering his role as president just because we crave some political drama is a great disservice to the country. Until the president is certified medically unfit to continue, we should sheath our swords allow things take a normal course. I wonder what all the noise about Yar Adua's health is anyway. We've got 36 healthy state governors, how many of them are using their energy and sound health to transform our lives.Their fitness only gives them strength to pilfer the treasury. Sad as this may sound, Yar Adua is going to outlive some of those wishing him death in most uncouth language

It appears that there are so many interests in the president's health condition. let us take the nation first and act in the best interest of the nation.

Its amazing how insensitive alot of people can be due to lack of inability to be critical.I pray that most of you making these negative comments about a human being who is naturally prone to illnesses never fall seek and your bosses sack you, simply becos you have a recurrent illness.Nigerians are so slow to learn, here is a man that is clearly trying to fix all the wrongs from several years of scatter, who may be slow but steady.Unfortunatley what Nigerians want is someone that runs as fast as a ferrari zooming with all our monies to there private accounts.Make una open una eyes and brains.Pray for the mans recovery.

It is only the Almighty God that knows the coming and going of every human being. Lets put sentiments aside and pray for our president and our nation.

Nigerian are not ready to speak or hear the truth yet. Until an average nigerian is prepared to speak or hear the truth, our problems will continue. viz President health, deregulation, niger delta, budget, bank failure, anambra state, etc

Posted by usmanmusa on Dec 03 2009

What is happening, the president has all the compettent and realible executive council members that are running the ministries at his paste.NBA ,what did you do about so many cases in nigerian courts that have no basis or background and innocent citizens are there suffering in various prisons? Save the human right and stop desending with gorrilla bite on Aonduokaa over the ill state of our dear president. The prayer he needed most is that of those that have no claim what so ever from the government rather they keep on claiming from them eg. peasant farmers and traders. We are praying well for your quick recovery.
