Another union to paralyse universities over partial negotiation

Print print Email email Share Share

Despite the recent breakthrough in the three-month-old industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), their non-academic counterparts, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), have told Nigerians to jubilate with caution.

Jonathan Omolana, SSANU chairperson of the University of Ibadan branch, said on Monday that the body would ensure a total paralysis of the university system across the country even if ASUU calls off its own strike, as expected this week.

He urged parents to blame the government if this happens, as the union was sidelined in the negotiation going on between the government and the university lecturers.

Speaking during an open demonstration to protest the non-inclusion of other unions in the universities in the negotiation with ASUU, Mr. Omolana said the academic staff cannot claim to be the only important entity in the system.

He said the protest would continue on Tuesday to draw the attention of the Federal Government to the need to negotiate with other unions in the universities.

All the gates leading to the University of Ibadan were locked yesterday as the SSANU leaders insisted that what they did would amount to child's play when they begin the real action after ASUU calls off its strike.

"The Federal Government as a parent is showing that it loves a child more than the other children, whereas he should love them equally," Mr. Omolana said. "However, since the father has indicated his preference for one child, he should contend with the attendant domestic crisis. The lecturers are in control of one critical aspect of the university system, while the other unions are in control of many other critical aspects. We have the lecture theatres, the accounts department, the gate, the general administration, and the lavatories among other aspects which the lecturers and the students still count on us to keep in shape for them. So you can see that one way or the other, we too have a stake in the running of the system. It is unfortunate that the Federal Government could afford to ignore others and hold dialogue with the ASUU alone. We are not disturbed, but we are waiting for them in all the universities in the country," Omolana told journalists.

Posted by Azeez on Oct 06 2009

FG should considered every arms at once....an injury to one is injury to others......ASUU can not run universities in isolation.

Posted by Jade on Oct 06 2009

Pls can some1 explain why these guys are complaining? I thought it was just ASUU that was aggreived by the fact that the govt hasnt signed an agreement they reached a while ago.

Posted by Kelechi Okoro on Oct 06 2009

just another reason why education should be completely privatised... this is not like transportation or mail... these academic unions need to know they are playing with people's lives! This nonsense alone contributes heavily to Nigeria's brain drain. What do these guys want to be paid for? Nigeria's public universities are amongst the worst in the world!

Posted by Kunleh on Oct 06 2009

FG shld av put every unions on the negotiation table, so as to avoid this second paralyses of the sch system.

Posted by Oyiboeru on Oct 06 2009

Fg should please meet with the other union because assu can't do it all alone

Posted by Choji on Oct 06 2009

My friends this is corruption to the highest order, atleast we should all have a human face to this issue. if it were my brothers or children schooling in Nigeria, will I be happy to continue with the strike. It is high time that most of this lecturers be investigated, cos this is a total bloff. a set back to democracy.

Fed govt should look into non-ASUU union matters and do something to grant them, their own increments, in order to ensure the peace to governance in all nigeria universities

Posted by emmanuelakanni@yahoo.com on Oct 06 2009

well i have discovered that the fear of Militiant is the begining of wisdom for FG, so SSANU should for militant group to deal with FG.

Posted by Tope on Oct 06 2009

I read Omolana's comment above with disbelief. What kind of self-centered, self-important people are SSANU that they would jeopardise the lives of other people just to make a point. I agree with the poster above that says the universities should be privatised. Let these people know that they're actions are unconscionable and ultimately, they are replaceable. It's not like they have done a good job of educating anyway.

Posted by Akin on Oct 06 2009

While I sympathise with the other ancillary unions, for them to be asking for parity with academics is, quite frankly, utterly indefensible. The fact that flight attendants perform a useful service should not make them demand equal treatment with pilots neither should ward attendants demand they should be treated like surgeons! Justice is treating equals equally and unequals unequally. So said Aristotle...

Posted by yommy on Oct 06 2009

I think the other union never had any demand before.

Posted by UKKY on Oct 06 2009

ASUU SHOULD CALL OFF STRIKE AND FG SHOULD CONTINUE NEGOTIATION WITH OTHER UNIONS LATER

Posted by Dada on Oct 06 2009

Why do we blame the government for everything? This union is just being greedy, because an agreement has been reached between lecturers and the federal govt, now bursars, gate men and toilet cleaners want to claim importance!!!!! Nigerians are the cause of their own problems, really!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Fisayo on Oct 06 2009

FG is just deceiving themselves(not us) wit d plot of this asuu negotiation, they knew things wont work out that way cos they are not truly ready to hit the nail on the head.im sick of this government.kpschew!!!

Posted by Gbenga on Oct 06 2009

This present govt doesnt value education at all.if it is abt militant, they surely knw wat to do.

I hope to God that most of the excruciatigly bad English in some of the posts above are typoes. You know the type you get when you are hitting those keys hard and fast. I hope so because many of these posts sound like they emerged from the brains and fingers of University Undergrads. God please.

Posted by Olojede kazim olabisi on Oct 06 2009

Omo men, she na like dis we go de dey. Help us beg federal government to answer other arms so that we go fit go back school. House don tire us oooo

Posted by Baba agba on Oct 06 2009

See the real issue here is that the guys running the govt don't have their kids in Nigerian universities so they don't understand the plight of the common man and how many people can afford to send their children to private universities? see we need to deal the problem of education in this country, which started from these same teachers promoting cheating in Exams. Believe it or not exam malpracticies got us here today, and we are all liable and because some parents know that certificates could be bought in our universities they opted for the foreign ones and leave ours to rot as they are currently. Education is the bedrock of meaningful development, we need to take a collective action and combat our educational problem in our schools even if it means that some of us will go to school and teach our kids we have to because this country needs this sort of revolution if the non academic staff go on strike the govt will take another 4months to even hear them out and make more promises they know they have no plans to keep because they just want to get as much money as they can to keep sending their own kids to the best school abroad people we need to take action into our hands

Posted by Lasper on Oct 06 2009

i must confess, the Nigeria system of gov are nothing to recon with, in true sense how can one aspect of the university system be address without the other been tackle, it's obvious that the FG are not concern about the progress of the universities, becuase they believe the ASUU or SSANU are not resoursful.

Posted by Agbero lomo on Oct 06 2009

i agree with baba agba's comment above and charge Olumide Gbolahan to read his own post and pray they are not typos because they sure don't look like one. SSANU sound selfish where were they when ASUU started this strike do they even know what ASUU is fighting for? Abeg they should just tell us what they want for peace sake

Posted by tunji akeju on Oct 06 2009

the FG should also settle with them too and make sure no associations involvin the runnin of the skools are left out

Posted by Loveday on Oct 06 2009

the fed.govt should have known that it ought to adress the concerns of the other two unions.it appears those at the helm of affairs have grown barren of ideas.it is ridiculous

Posted by Jesutola Ajao on Oct 06 2009

This issues are taking too long than we all expected...its all begining to appear that our leaders don't have serious plans for us and that they are just indirectly running campaign for private institutions

Posted by nnamani, frm nsukka on Oct 06 2009

Pls this should not happen there should be mutual aggrement between the two body(otu alhaji ka ana achuru efi,) an adadge that says they all serve one alhaji in cattle rearing. or does it mean there is a division among them. why cant they have pity for the student and what they suffered so far. Pls am begging with my kness on ground and eyez full of tears SSANU change ur mind.

Posted by Beauty on Oct 06 2009

ASUU should also note that Adams Oshomole is no longer the president of NLC but is now a brother to President Yaradua and Sam Egwu as a governor, and because they are all members of the house of assembly ,so they(ASUU)should be very very careful in whatever decision they take in other to avoid being deceived by the Federal government.thank!

Posted by Haky on Oct 06 2009

hm................. its a bad dream indeed... What are the other university bodies doing when ASUU is negotiating with the FG in the 1st month of the strike? Did they partake in the negotiation? Why is it now that things will be resolve that they are raising eyebrow? I really need someone to please answer those questions above. We are not 4 one time civilize in this country...

I just dont see the rational behind someone thinking in he or she desrves more pay, if u feel u are underpaid, GET OUT! Other people who are better qualified for that same job are out there, the truth about this lyf and from my expeiences is that only a small fraction of humans (.00000001%) will actually fight for another's cause without getting sumthin for themselves asuu ssanu nassu and all the other unions are nothing but a bunch of greedy individuals who think that they are worth more than they really are, they claim to be doing all sorts of researches that we never see or benefit from. They funny thing thing about all this claims of funding for reseach is that they spend most of this research monies on all sorts of allowances while they travel all over the place doin nothing reasonable. What pains me the most is that they results of this so called researchs adds to their own qualifications and not that of the ggovernment. In summary the govt trains u to get a qualification and u now turn around to hold it to-ransom to pay you, more for being 'better qualified'. Its just too sad.

It has now become the habit of the FG to choose one loved labor union group in spite of others. This is also happening in the health sector, where the Nigeria Medical Association are been favored better than other labor unions in the sector. THIS ILLNESS MUST STOP.It may soon turn to MADNESS if nothing is done about it. DO SOMETHING NOW!

Posted by maidugu on Oct 06 2009

I dont think government should be considered fair if it only meets the demand of Asuu and ignores other Unions within the nation;if we want to move this country forward government must give each sector equal treatment

Posted by Daniel on Oct 06 2009

This is a wake up call for everyone in Nigeria. The asuu strike is for the university system entirely, but this one 'na God go talk am'.

Posted by Dan on Oct 06 2009

This people don't care about this students while they are at home without considering the future for the youths. If they are dreaming they should wake up.

Posted by dd on Oct 06 2009

The most important thing this is that these unions should better find the motive behind all agitations and change the moral values in our society to be a better one.

Posted by Zeez on Oct 06 2009

I don't blame them (the govt., ASUU, SSANU, NASU). If we could all afford to either go to private universities or study abroad, all this rubbish would not arise. May GOD just provide for us. Btw, this is one of the signs of the End Time. "The Hour will not come until when leaders become oppressors, when a trust becomes the means of making of making profit..." -Mohammed (SAW)

Posted by Ab on Oct 06 2009

I just wonder for how long our insensitive Mr. President will allow we youths(THE FUTURE LEADERS)to continue to be destroyed by staying @ home. Perhaps he thinks it is illiterates that will take Nigeria to her vision 20: 2020 Mr. President, Please act now & communicate to the nation...where are we going?

i can't believe this is happening in an admin, where we have the minnister of edu as former lecturer, min of info and com, fmr lecturer, and the pres hmself. i think our pres is just a figure head.

Posted by Godfrey on Oct 06 2009

this is a big nightmare. while didn't this union raise this issue when the ASUU strike is still on so that it can be tackled together. it obvious that they don't have the interest at heart. little wonder, they don't respect the students back on campus.

Posted by Albert Owonubi on Oct 06 2009

What is the deal with this anyway. The masses are begging for a ravamp of the universities, i don't blame them. the strike action should not seize....no one realises the issue of unequipped grads. i have interviewed a few "Graduates" who were hardly worth their salt.

Posted by Emmanuel Elemi on Oct 06 2009

What are this pple trying to bring up again (The devil is a lier) When ASUU was lamenting they were not saying anything, now that everything is almost settled that is when they want to arise a new one. May Almighty God help us in this country.

This our Country,or these our leaders...Why are they NOT taking preventive measures against crisis? The ASUU,SSANU,NASU,etc. have all been on strike over common cause. Why single out ASUU to resolve same issues? Is anybody interested in resolving the crisis at all and/or once for all?

Posted by Olaofe Jonathan on Oct 07 2009

Asuu might call off the strike in this week, but we have to continue our prayer over nigeria.

Posted by Breeze on Oct 07 2009

I think its unfair on the part of the government not to include other parties in the negotiation, but the ssanu are also stupid to have waited for the negotiation to be completed before voicing out. I think the next thing we'l hear is that students are also going on strike

Posted by ADEWALE on Oct 07 2009

Something is dismally wrong with our value systems around here... where was this Mr Omolana and his ilks when ASUU was slugging it out with FG? STOP PRESS! FG, ASUU, SSANU,NASU...ALL OF YOU! OUR GENERATION IS SILENTLY WATCHING YOUR SHOW OF SHAME... YOU ARE FIDDLING WITH OUR FUTURE AND YOU THINK THERE WONT BE REPERCURSIONS? IS THIS WHAT YOUR OWN FATHERS GAVE TO YOU? ... IF YOU CANT MAKE IT BETTER, ATLEAST LEAVE IT AS YOU MET IT!... Posterity will judge!

This is a BIG SHAME on our country, how could people of high ranks be bahaving like primary students?even our primary students shouldn't act this way, this is very absord, and strange.OGA OOO,Mr Yaradua,ASUU and co,it's a big shame on you all.

Posted by leomena3k on Oct 07 2009

All these recent happenings in our nations are good symptoms for the diagnosis of a 'failed state' . The government and stakeholders of the nation's educational sector know the solutions to these problems but refused to solve it in unity. They all know what they are doing.

Posted by Zulu Obi on Oct 07 2009

A problem worth solving is worth is best solved well ...and not in half...ASUU, SSANU, NASU...all make up the university system...solving one's problem and leaving others out mesan doing nothing...or do they expect that only ASUU will run the university system?

Posted by kayode bello on Oct 07 2009

What we need to do right now is quite simple.let us match to any venue of their meetings or gatherings-FG,ASUU, SSANU, NASU.we must let them know our discomfort, grievances, our time they are wasting.enough of posting comments.do they really read them?if they do, then the media must let them know.are we going to keep nagging for another one week.ASUU, you have garnered people's sympathy enough, today's report shows there is something fishy, before students start accusing you.just call off the strike this week and continue negotiating. other unions must negotiate too, not further closure of the universities.yet, ASUU has not disclosed what transpired between it and Federal Government. This drama is uninteresting. It is getting tragic, a tragedy.

Posted by Imoisili Victor on Oct 07 2009

i am of the opinion that this ssanu should remain forever quiet. they should have join asuu in pressing home their demands if any at all. ssanu apparently don't have any concrete legitimate ground to go on strike except to merely drawn unnecessary attention to self.

Posted by Lolu on Oct 09 2009

When FG was negotiating with ASUU, where was SSANU and the rest other unions? WHy couldnt they come around and put their case forwards? They are waiting to be called turn by turn. Is it not the same one university umbrella that they fall under? Are they not supposed to be collectively bargaining along with ASUU? Arent they supposed to define their problems with solutions and come together to fix it up? They could even forward ASUU their request so it can be put forward on their behalf if they cant be there. What kind of thing is this? Negotiate with toilet, then you negotiate with bathroom, lecture hall will come and meet you after for his own, then hostels followd by teaching staff, then chancellor and his vice, plus their secretary - fuel their car and then students. Oh, not to forget kitchen too! This is not impressive organisation on the part of the unions AT ALL!
