Panic in varsity over AIDS letter

Print print Email email Share Share

Outrage and amazement are some of the emotions currently on display in Yola, Adamawa State, after the startling revelation contained in a letter addressed to a radio station in the state capital, Radio Gotel, by a lady who claimed to be an undergraduate of the Federal University of Technology Yola (FUTY).

The lady, in the letter which was sent to the producer of the programme, "Heart to Heart", said she contracted the Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV) from her student boyfriend and has, in revenge, willfully slept with some 124 students and lecturers at the school.

The letter also contained the writer's threat to make public the names of those who have had sex with her "on the notice board." This has led to panic and spirited discussions among the male population in Yola, especially within the school community. The school's authorities, however, claim to be unaware of the letter, but promised to look into it.

The letter reads, in part: "I have a well-documented report of all those guys and lecturers who crossed my path, since I got infected with this deadly disease in the campus. So far, I have had 124 students and lecturers; out of these, only six (6) used condoms".

On a revenge mission

Continuing, she said in the letter, "I owe nobody an apology and am still on a spreading till I spread it no more."

The writer, who did not hide the trauma and disappointment she faced, explained in the letter that her first impulse upon the discovery of her HIV status was to take away her own life.

"I, however, did not confide my status to anyone until today (i.e the disclosure via the letter)," she said. "Since 2006, I promised myself that it's in the university I got it and here I will leave it. I have indeed lived to keep my promise.

"I was in year three when a student on his attachment in our school proposed for a relationship. He had all the qualities a woman would want in a man so I gave in. He told me all a girl would want to hear. In my innocence and naivety, I succumbed to his pressure to have sex with him. Consequently, I lost my virginity to him.

"After his placement, he reported for his final year and we still had contacts. I visited him on a number of occasions, I have even lost count the number of times I visited him. He was my first and only love and, therefore, hanged on every word he told me.

"My boyfriend later graduated and we lost contact until last month when his sister told me about his whereabouts. Before registration in the faculty of science, I went for medical test as is the requirement. I then opted for an HIV/AIDS test, which unfortunately turned out to be positive.

"It then dawned on me that I have traded the rest of my life for a university student who had deliberately and intentionally preyed on my innocence".

Danger of casual sex

A medical worker, who gave her name as Agnes, said the only lesson from the letter is that people should be careful about casual sex.

"Whatever you think, it is a fact that casual sex is very popular and for a lot of people, it's something that either satisfies a desire or serves a purpose," she said. "It is, therefore, an issue that affects many young people today, as they patronise casual sex under the various terms like ‘No strings attached' and ‘the one night stands' culture gaining foothold in our social life."

According to the United Nations AIDs agency, a vast majority of people with HIV and AIDS live in lower and middle-income countries. Around half of all people who become infected with HIV do so before they are25.

Young girl you are very wicked must you do that to satisfy yourself, instead of you to be praying to God.

Ok, I'm a bit lost here. One part of the article says..... "Since 2006, I promised myself that it's in the university I got it and here I will leave it. I have indeed lived to keep my promise. And then towards then end, its states that .... "My boyfriend later graduated and we lost contact until last month when his sister told me about his whereabouts. Before registration in the faculty of science, I went for medical test as is the requirement. I then opted for an HIV/AIDS test, which unfortunately turned out to be positive. So how could she have found out last month, but made this promise in 2006?? And if in 2006 she was in year 3, what the bleeding heck is she still doing in school??

Well the moral of the fable is that men should be careful and stop playing around (including women). As for the veracity of her claim, she cooked this up. Or the radio station did. Check the storyline again, it just did not add up. It is reminisce of stories bandied about by Nigerian SUs and bornagain groups on campuses claiming hell fire exist under the rocks of Nigeria. Follow the moral but ignore the stories as facts.

I am not even border about when and how she contacted the virus, I pity the young lady I think any other person could do just that. Imagine a virgin being lust to contact HIV. I do not blame the girl. The only blame I am having for her is her in ability to resist sex with the said HIV boyfriend and this will serve as a lesson to all you Quicky BOYS and girls. I think the only solution is TOTAL ABSTENIENCE and faithfullness to ones spouse. Imagine those LECTURERS might even be family men. To me I can never blame the poor girl. I will only blame the Casualties 'the hot campus DOGS'

with you on that Somebody...tot i was the only one who noticed the story was twisted. She said she was in Year3 when she met the guy and traded her virginity but makes reference to opting for a test as part requirements for registration into the faculty of science...twisted twisted twisted! what the frigging heck she still doing in that school??? I'm guessing prob'ly Radio Gotel wasnt geting much listenrship and went seeking for cheap publicity...hope this raked in the ratings they hoped for...

This is not news. It has been in circulation online for ages. A simple google check could have revealed the falsity of this so-called letter. A careful reading also reveals the inconsistencies in the story as SOMEBODY pointed out.

Mr. somebody you be sharp guy.

Posted by uyii edo on Dec 15 2009

Incase u all have forgoten ASUU dey strike that maybe the reason for her being in yr 3 in 2006, and beside she may have been sick and left school and comeback to continue people dey fail u know. This reminds me of UNIBEN in 1999 the tale of the guy with a green lincoln navigator taking different girls home every night for over 3 weeks b4 the rumour came out that he was HIV positive. We chased the car the next time we saw it, but believe me some chicks still went to meet the guy at connoil back then ,, funny...the lesson stay away from it or be faithful.. yes we can

This story did not need to be cooked up. Nor does the contradiction nullify the whole account. Places and dates are mentioned. It is entirely probable that this happened despite the discrepancy in dates. The thing is that premarital sex is a deadly game. I neither sympathise with her nor those who thought they were just taking advantage of another girl. I sympathise rather with those who make light of this tale and who will go living as if AIDS is not real.

Posted by Folarin Adio on Dec 15 2009

This girl just wants to spread panic there is no iota of truth in this story because of its many in consistencies. But its a wake up call for all men "becareful"!

Posted by Bobby on Dec 15 2009

Its true that the story lacked consistency, but the moral of the story should be the key thing.

Posted by karambata on Dec 15 2009

Why does any mention of HIV or aids stir up so much emotions? HIV/Aids is like any other chronic ailment, treatable but not curable. We need to strip away emotions which lead to stigmatization and take logical action to provide full information to the masses This will help prevent such perverse thoughts or maybe actions as described in this news item. People!!! A POSITIVE HIV TEST RESULT IS NOT A DEATH SENTENCE!!! People living with HIV can live full normal lives. we must get fight stigmatisation

Posted by Blesyn on Dec 15 2009

Whether twisted or not twisted, the fact remains that AIDS is real! You better save yourself.

Posted by Danasabe Usman, Mokwa on Dec 15 2009

It is a lesson for those who go to school for learning and engages on sexual intercoure.

Posted by Globalchild on Dec 15 2009

Bullshit! I sleep with the reverend father and twenty monks. Until the veracity of the letter is confirmed please stop spreading fear. It's irresponsible of the radio station not to find the source of the information before reading on air. This is some arkward form of terrorism. Lets dissociate this from the emotional plot of her defilement n all, she seeks simply to terrorise us with fear.

Posted by Me on Dec 15 2009

So many people living without HIV today are even afraid of knwing their status,WHY. Let deal with stigmatization.

Posted by Doctor on Dec 15 2009

@Somebody: That is to show you how useless this 234 next newspaper is with wrong wrong information they dish out every now and then...for me I only read the headlines.

Posted by Doctor on Dec 15 2009

What if it was real.. Forget the Messenger and face the MESSAGE.

Posted by Osita Macfoy on Dec 15 2009

Karambata got the point clear - HIV POSITIVE is not a death sentence. in fact, it gives you the opporrunity to live a more fruitful and well planned life. HIV is not worse than TB, diabetis, heart attach, slump and die including malaria etc. The story is cooked up but the moral is not lost - we need to leave a decent life both before God and man.

Posted by doris deno on Dec 15 2009

girl, God still heals. If ur story is true, pls do go to God in prayers of repentance and he is so faithful to restore back your health. God bless u real good.

This is WICKEDNESS. How are we sure i was through sex you contacted this virus? as an undergraduate in her three must know that there are other means of contacting this virus i.e sharp object, blood transmission, clippers e.t.c. How can you convince the greatest nugeria student that you are not the one that contacted the virus first. so my dear sister please and please stop soreading this virus for christ sake, after death comes judgement. so please help NIGERIA to grow

Posted by Ola on Dec 15 2009

What a pity! but, it is not Godly to repaid evil with evil. May Almighty God prevent us from any scourge of the present world. AMIN. God Bless Nigeria

Posted by Akpan Attat on Dec 15 2009

From the experience and trauma of this young lady which has gingered her desire to refenge, it therefore becomes imperative that people should undergo or carry out HIV test before any relationship is started.

Posted by wisdom on Dec 15 2009

Look, if you've had sex without a condom, the wise thing to do is go for a HIV test to clear any doubts. The truth is, there are MANY other people out there spreading the virus who will never reveal to you their status. Just be wise and do the necessary to stay virus free. I'm just saying.

Posted by somebody on Dec 15 2009

@ Abdul, i no be Mr, but thanks all the same. It never seems to amaze me that whenever it comes to issues to do with sex, promiscuity, and the like, most Nigerian's suddenly wear the holier than thou cloak and the bible scriptures, quotes, condemnation, judgment with promises of hell with fire and brimstone start flying about. It is this attitude and closed mind that is bane of our problems as a country. Whether or not the story is true, which i seriously doubt, we shouldn't miss important lessons which are, if you can't abstain, then practice safe sex. Also, being HIV positive is not the end of the world except you choose for it to be so. Out here, people with the virus lead normal lives. We have so stigmatized being HIV positive in Nigeria because our closed minds (and no, its nothing to do with our culture) that we fail to realise that there are a thousand and one ways one can contract this virus without necessarily sleeping about. No one here is perfect, so we shouldn't have expectations of others to be. Instead of judging these people, the should be encouraged to come out and seek help so the problem can be contained. Like the bible we are so quick to quote .... He who is without sin should cast the first stone.

All u guys out there who would rather subject any truth under the cynical prism of reality you had better think again. The university in question is a university of tecthnology and the duration or studies here takes five yrs unlike other universities. The other gist is that the male friend is already dead! What if she had a carry over! What if she had periodic illnesses that made coping with studies difficult. What if .....I can go On. I have an aunty who is HIV positive and has been so for the past five years she is still cute!Hi!

Posted by Maigida on Dec 15 2009

All the comments so far are as expected. I advise that people should stay away from casual sex b4 marriage to a faithful partner. However, if the Radio Station wants to wash itself clean of the disbelief that the story was cooked up, let the girl name names (e.g. The guy that infected her and some other guys, may be) Abi wetin una think?

Posted by LANRE+ on Dec 15 2009

gush!, this is pretty bad.young lady, yours action was totally bad.no matter what your ex. did to you, that doesnt mean you should go about passing it round. please ask for God's forgiveness. AIDS IS REAL!!! BEWARE GUYS, THOUGH THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO ANYONE, LET YOUR NERVES URGE YOU TO USE A C.D

Posted by Commonman on Dec 15 2009

@ Doctor. A man tells you he has gonnorhea, do you as physician begin to measure the length and breadth of his penis as well as the turgidity before and after sex? YOU are a MORON. A reporter's job is to report what is news. If you tell me you ate a scorpion yesterday at your grandma's, as a reporter, I'll say "Doctor has said that he ate scorpion at his grandma's house." I won't say "I saw Doctor eating scorpion. The message makes no sense without a messenger, or else turn your stethoscope into a measuring tape.

I dont care whether the gals story is true or not,of course the world did not infect her wf HIV only one person and she was not raped so wy spread the disease? i see that as sheer wickedness cos she wont gain anything at the end of the day and evry1 will die anyway. S o she go ahead and print out the names of her victims if she so wish and stop making some empty threat, if she has infected ppl wf HIV and so what? for the world, abstainance is the real thing. Know ur status today.for those who r positive, life goes on,lets live it!

Posted by anonymous on Dec 15 2009

The gal no fear God! At least she has nothing to gain rather she has alot to loose because, the HIV still lives in her body and at the same she might probably have gotten another STD.

Posted by Erus on Dec 16 2009

The story could be TRUE, but why panic at the campus when they are not "Dogs" or are they? Anyway this will put them in check. Go for a test

Posted by ND on Dec 16 2009

I dire the lady. Let her publish the names. Of course I don't believe the story, however AIDS is real. Guys watch out.

Posted by WEN on Dec 16 2009

WE ALL HAVE TO BE CAREFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TRUE OR FALSE AIDS IS REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Posted by Omo Jesu on Dec 16 2009

Ignorance! HIV is not a disease. It is a state. People live with it and live normally, sometimes better than those without it. HIV does not kill. AIDS is the killer! HIV negative people sometimes die of common malaria, typhoid, cancer, hepatitis, etc, while even HIV positve people live longer, depending on the quality of lifestyle. They even have children who are negative. There are retroviral drugs now to control, reduce and stop the virus from doing further damages while increasing immunity. Reckless lifestyle boosts HIV into AIDS just as it boosts other viruses into deadly diseases, leading to death. Good quality lifestyle is the answer.

Posted by Yola Guy on Dec 16 2009

Actually I confess I know that girl. I am the one who infected her. I slept with her and 250 other girls in Yola.I have spread HIV everywhere, even outside Yola because my girlfriends travel to other states in the South and East. Now I am born again, and my pastor has healed me of HIV. I am even married with children. I am sorry to all my former 250 girlfriends. Please sex is bad for all of us. Praise the lord.
