ORT is the giving of fluid by mouth to prevent and/or correct the dehydration that is a result of diarrhoea. As soon as diarrhoea begins, treatment must be started using home remedies to prevent dehydration. If adults or children have not been given extra fluids,or if in spite of this dehydration does occur, they must be treated with a special drink called oral rehydration therapy.
Diarrhoea is dangerous because it can lead to death if it is not properly treated. During diarrhoea, your child loses water and salts from the body. This is called dehydration.

An inexpensive ORT home-made solution consists of
— 1 litre of water, mixed with
— 8 teaspoons of sugar,
— 1 teaspoon of table salt.
