The Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials said it spent ₦7 million on medical bills for 11 women with breast cancer.
The organisation said yesterday that it also constructed two recreation centres in Oworonshoki and Orile-Agege, Lagos. The two projects, which will be commissioned for use tomorrow by the Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola, were reported to have cost about ₦30 million.
This was disclosed by the organisation’s chairperson, Abimbola Fashola, in Ikeja on Monday at a press briefing on its forthcoming annual national women conference.
Mrs. Fashola said the fund for the medical bills and the projects were from the proceeds of last year’s conference, where about ₦40 million was realised from conference fees and voluntary donations.
Speaking on the ideals of the organisation, Mrs. Fashola said: “It is necessary to educate women about issues that affect them for them to be involved in the processes of governance.”
According to Mrs. Fashola, the theme of this year’s conference, which will hold between October 28 and 30 at the Ocean View Expo Hall, Victoria Island, is “Rethink, Renew, and Resolve your challenges”.
She revealed that four resourceful women have been chosen to speak during the conference, which will be the ninth one.
Ibukun Awosika, the founder and chairperson of The Chair Centre, will be speaking on “Managing Public Life”; Iyabo Ladipo, the CEO of Retrieving the Values Ltd. and Double Portion Ltd will deliver a lecture on “Re-inventing Family Values”; Adejoke Orelope-Adelifure, the state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation will enlighten the participants on “The Woman Politician”; and Alsu Fisher, the CEO of A & Ace Business Services Nigeria Ltd will speak on “Preparing for retirement”.
During the opening ceremony, the recipient of the award of the Inspirational Woman of the Year, which has become a tradition of the conference, will be unveiled.
