Scramble for meat as vehicle with 500 dogs crashes

Print print Email email Share Share

When an articulated vehicle from the north loaded with about 500 dogs crashed at the main entrance to Calabar, residents of Ikot Effanga Mkpa gleefully helped themselves to free dog meat but the traders are still ruing the losses incurred.

Dog meat is a delicacy in Calabar. It is eaten by both sexes and is easily used to woo a woman. But it is expensive as dogs are brought into the state from the northern parts of the country.

The lorry was almost at its destination, when it was involved in an accident along the Murtala Mohammed Highway near the main gate of "Welcome To Calabar" and somersaulted, upturning the dogs on the road and killing 200, while others sustained life-threatening injuries.

Apart from the dogs, other passengers in the vehicle also sustained injuries in the accident believed to have been caused by loss of concentration by the driver who obviously was tired following the long journey.

When the accident happened, the residents of the area and passerby were attracted to the scene only to have their attention diverted by the dead dogs by dragging them away as if in competition. Some ran home and came back for more.

One of the passengers of the ill-fated lorry who simply identified himself as Bassey wondered why the accident should occur at the main gate to Calabar after travelling over 1000 kilometers from the north.

Mr. Bassey nevertheless thanked God that none of the passengers died in the accident like their cargoes and described the rush for body parts of the dead dogs by some of the onlookers as unsympathetic and unbecoming of the people of Calabar.

‘Don't eat dogs'

But a medical doctor with the General Hospital Calabar, Edet O. Edet, said it was not hygienic for people to eat meat mangled as a result of accident and which flies had perched on for some hours.

Though not a veterinary doctor, Mr. Edet explained that meat not from a slaughter house was not fit for human consumption as animals killed there are certified healthy for consumption before being killed.

"In the first place, dogs ought not to be eaten," Mr. Edet said.

"Have you seen a slaughter house for dogs? Besides, these dogs were caught from the northern parts of the country and taken to where they are considered a delicacy. And without any examination by a veterinary staff, they are slaughtered for human consumption", Mr. Edet said.

Mr. Edet added that dogs killed under such circumstances emit toxic chemicals that are harmful to human health and attributed the rush for dogs involved in a motor accident to poverty and called for a sensitization campaign on the effect of such meat.

But opinion sampled from some residents of Calabar differed from that of the medical doctor. They said there was nothing harmful in dog meat as dogs are slaughtered unlike some animals that are strangled in the bush after being caught by the traps set for them.

In the city, dog is carefully prepared and spiced with some vegetable that gives the meat a tempting aroma. In Calabar, it is common to see joints with sign boards reading: "Plantain plus 404 ready". This combination is washed down with palm wine.

Cannibals chop dog meat in the modern age. In the olden days they used to chop human meat. Is dog meat the new replacement for Clifford Orji and co.

It is very interesting. Who can rush for snakes like that? Or is snake not a delicacy anywhere?

Posted by TMM on Nov 19 2009

Wanna try tortoise?

Posted by tjazzy on Nov 19 2009

The only forbidden meat is human meat which has been scientifically proven to cause madness within a week (if you eat certain parts which I will not name here). That being said, with the right amount of the right spices and sufficient boiling, roasting, frying etc, any animal will become a delicacy. I have eaten reptiles, fish, mammals and even some unrecognizable animals without skeleton and I am still alive and healthy. These doctors just like scaring people about Dog meat. Don't mind them.

Excuse me, there's no point 4 insults, like other tribes eat snakes and very queer animal. The calabar man prefers dog meat, which is a very important delicacy. How the name 404 came about i dont know, but dog meat with the sauce and rice is a piece of heaven. So stop the discrimination.

Posted by TATA on Nov 19 2009

404 was a peugeot brand, that was reputed to be top of its class in the 60s, you probably would have 604 or 704 series now, it was supposed to be the fastest thing on four wheels...the 404 was then used in referring to dogs who were able to run fast on all four legs

My People, I am a Calabar man, and nothing will make me eat a dog. So, stop with the stereotypes...not all Calabar people are into eating dogs and whatever else is eaten out there. Thank you.

the comments posted by the so called proper calabar man makes him very very improper,as a matter of fact he is fake and insincere. "I BE CALABAR MAN ,I DEY CHOP DOG WELL WELL.ANYTHING YOU LIKE TALK, NA YOU GET YOUR MOUTH." GO TO CHINA AND SEE HOW PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE ...........

Posted by Danladi on Nov 19 2009

Different strokes you would say! By the way, snake is a delicacy in China and Ondo state in Nigeria. Like a text sent to me proclaims, If Adam and Eve were Chinese (may i add, Nigerians of Ondo stock) we will still be in Paradise. Why? Bcos they would have eaten the snake instead of the bloody apple!

Posted by dog lover on Nov 19 2009

I'm all for being tolerant and all but the thought of people killing and eating dogs is just abhorrent. Those animals are cute and are supposed to be for canine companionship not food. Snakes r nasty its ok to kill n eat if u like them dt way but eating dogs is just plain evil!!!

Posted by Aisha on Nov 19 2009

The people of Zuru in Sokoto State also eat dogs and it is considered a delicacy. You know the saying, one man's meat is another man's poison. Cuisines vary from culture to culture. It isn't a big deal.

Posted by rofl on Nov 19 2009

omg, i'm gonna die! this is the most hilarious thing i've read on the internet this week - thank God for nigerians! right up there with the thief who turned into a goat.

Reading through this thread got me in stitches. Jeez! Dog meat, the last thing that ma teeth would grind! But u guys shud av it mind dat anything is either good or bad, depending on how u view/take/regard it. That's d naked truth. As 4 me, I won't try meats 4rm dogs, swines, snakes, any animal dat crawls wif it's belly, and any oda animal dat's d choice for sacrifice to idols!

For many years, dogs have been bitting (chopping) Calabar people, nobody shout, now Calabar people turn around to bite dogs, everybody is now shouting. ......The opportunity for Calabar people to eat Dogs is part of the 7 Point Agenda of Mr. President!!!!

Posted by meiru jones on Nov 20 2009

please stop eating man's best friend. a dog is your pet and friend, so quit eating it. even the bible forbids the eating of dogs so why continue this horrible habit by these calabar people? what about beef, pork, lamb, goat, chicken and fish? the other day it is witch-children, today it is scramble for dead dog meat? so why not be known with something more heart-warming calabar people. www.icheoku.com will write an expose` on the calabar questionable palate for dog's meat

This is craze at its extreme! Scrambling for dog meat. Calabar, don't mar the beauty of your state with this barbaric trend. Well,I stay in Abuja and I invite you if you're strong enough to come take one of my three Rotts. Good luck!

Posted by Nandi P Bette on Nov 20 2009

One is compelled to agree with the Mdedical Doctor that the scramble was as a result of poverty, in view of the fact that many Nigerians barely afford three square meals daily these days. More so, those who can afford any at all, most often have it without the needed protein. So why won't they go for "free meat", even if it became available through a lorry accident? Am not a Medic, so it may be difficult to join issues with the Medical practitioner about the fitness of Dog Meat for human consumption. Howewver, those who savour the delicay say it is not only safe, but also very medicinal. This is because they have realized among other cures that, it is a strong antidote for waiste pain. If the fish comes from the sea and say the crocodile has only one eye, who am I to put up any argument?

Dont think eating dog is wrong, afterall the Chinese eat shark,Americans eat toads.it is the unhiegenic manner in which they kill it and prepare it that baffles me.Pray they dont contract any disease and spread it across Nigeria.

Posted by Mark Ogbue on Nov 20 2009

It is no longer a Calabar thing, the dog meat has certainly crossed borders. I never thought I could taste the meat talkless of eating until one day when I did and ever since Ive never looked back.

one man's meat is simply another man's pet, dog meat, with all the attendant diseases, i.e rabies, flea's, not in our time please

Posted by jide on Nov 21 2009

All flesh including yours truly (h. sapiens) is suitable for consumption. The digestive system does not discriminate. What an individual or group eats or does not eat is a cultural matter. As a cynophile, I'd love to ban or sanction the consumption of dogs, but frankly speaking it would be unconstitutional. I have a problem with rules that merely seek to impose one person's morality on another. Unless of course a civil or human right is in danger of violation.
