Armed men storm church

Print print Email email Share Share

Service was brought to a halt yesterday at the St Paul Anglican Church, Sodubi, Abeokuta when thugs, armed with dangerous weapons, invaded the church because the priest was allegedly being too blunt in his preaching. Some of the words he used were said to have offended some highly placed individuals who attend the church.
The crisis, which pitched a section led by a former senator and Baba ijo (father of the congregation), Femi Okunrounmu against those in support of the Venerable of the Church, Olumuyiwa Ilekoya, led to the suspension of service at the church as the worshipers who gathered for the first Sunday service of the new year scattered.

NEXT gathered that the crisis started after Mr. Ilekoya was prevented from entering the church by the camp allegedly opposed to his preaching. The offence of the cleric was traced to his sermon on the New Year eve, which a source said was not well received by some church elders. Mr. Ilekoya, at the service, warned political leaders to mend their ways or face the wrath of God.

It was said that shortly afterwards, a meeting was held where retaliatory measures were allegedly planned against the priest, to be executed in yesterday's service.

In a twinkle, what started like child-play quickly degenerated with the emergence of thugs numbering about six who came to man the church entrance and prevent the cleric and other supposed opponents of the angry elders' faction from entering the church.

Sensing danger, many worshippers left the church in droves, while the Venerable and some other elders of the church in his support relocated to Mission House, which is situated directly opposite the church.

The group that gained control of the church was said to have ordered the Church Layreader, J.A Fatade, assisted by one Akinsola, to conduct the service which was attended by those members who had not run away.

Mr. Okunrounmu, in his address to the church, told the congregation that Mr. Ilekoya was fond of raining curses while on the pulpit.

Some of the members of the church are saddened by the ugly development, and expressed their shock at the incident. Some of those who spoke to NEXT accused the church authority of turning the church into a political theater because of their individual selfish interests.

A political theater

One of them said Mr. Ilekoya would be the fourth cleric of the church that the elders would fight because of the theme of his preaching.

‘Even if a Reverend preaches and the preaching affects you, what a reasonable person should do is to make amends,' said one of the disturbed worshippers, who pleaded anonymity because he was scared of being attacked.

When approached by journalists at the church premises to react on the allegation that he sponsored thugs to disrupt the church service, Mr. Okunrounmu was furious.

"How did you get to know what's happening here, who told you and who told you to come," he said. "This is church affairs and not press affairs. I don't want to comment further."

Mr Ilekoya, the Venerable of the troubled church, also refused to comment, beyond saying he had reported the case to the Bishop, who will take necessary action on the matter.

What is the Church's name? Is it an Anglican oran African Church? Why have they chosen to turn a house of worship into political campaign ground? What right has the laity to decide what a Pastor preaches in the Church? When did a Pastor's sermon began to constitute a sin? If the Pastor loves to curse when preaching a sermon, can't it be that that he is sickened by the the level of immorality and indecency that he wanted changed? Didn't Christ cursed the fig tree, when the tree didn't produce fruit for the needy?

That is how they breed boys like Farouk. Like father like son. Bringing thugs to the church and prevent certain people from attending service is not Christianity. Abomination!

Now I agreed with American that we are terrorist. Using thugs or Armed men is the same as terrorism. If you don't like the preaching . Then leave the Church !

Disjointed article! How can an article start like this?

Posted by Segun on Jan 04 2010

Folks, the name and address of the Church is on the very first line! If that is overlooked, then I wonder what the comment is based on.

Posted by Ojulari Abdulkabir Tola on Jan 04 2010

@ yoyo, do you read? This is the name of the church "St Paul Anglican Church, Sodubi, Abeokuta ". The church is meant for worshipping not for campaigning. But I can't blame the thugs and the policians since some churches and mosques are known for political compaigning. Same pastors or Imams who have been conniving with the politicians while they are still in power, will leave them and begin to preach against them. Actually, the journalism is poor, the story lacks articulation and begining. You are right, Nas.

Ranters beware! St Paul Anglican Church, Sodubi, Abeokuta is the scene of this infamy.

May God forgive us in this country. We have turned the house of God into a battle ground. These people better beg for forgiveness so that the wrath of God will not decend on them.If the truth can not be heard in the house of God, where else do we want to hear it.

Posted by Baba Bolaji on Jan 04 2010

Abiodun Giwa, Spain Based, go back and C-A-R-E-F-U-L-L-Y read the story and you'll find the name of the church. Except if your braille had not been working well?

Posted by thecross on Jan 04 2010

@Spain base @Nas @Dayo @Yoyo Shame on you all! You people will not settle and properly digest a report before attempting to make incoherent and irresponsible comments. What kind of readers are you all? There is no difference between you and the area boys that disrupted the church service at the St Paul Anglican Church, Sodubi, Abeokuta. As for the accursed ex-Senator and his group, I think their behaviou/action in disrupting the church services is an indication of the efficacy of the the curse put on them by the Priest. The Priest was was only delivering God's message and I hope they are all aware that the Bible says no one should touch His annointed! That is by the way, but seriously speaking, most of these churches are peopled by occultists which is why you get this kind of reaction whenever the Word of God is preached in its pure form.

Those that brought thugs to the church are not true Christians. Religion is becoming a source of embarrassment in Nigeria today. This is a good example of why there is so much corruption and immorality in Nigeria despite the huge number of churches we have around. I'm just pissed off.

Posted by oneway thinking on Jan 04 2010

At least the Anglican laity is talking against corruption...pentecostals a la RCCG, Winners, BLW etc etc...where are you...or the tithes' blocking your mouths?

Posted by zuby on Jan 04 2010

how would one not digest the report before commenting, hope they did their lexis and structure in school. Go help us.

Although I based in the US and have not been home for a while, this strikes me too close to home. My Dad's residence (where I grew up) is just up the street from the church - you will drive past our house to get there. I also know the Okurounmu's (the "ex-senator" referred to in the story). Shame on all the parties involved!!! Must they air their dirty laundry in public? Is this the example they want to set for their children on what dispute resolution is all about? are there not established channels to resolve the "problem" within the church for e.g file a complaint with church leadership outside of that particular church? SHAMELESS ADULTS; ALL OF THEM...UTTERLY SHAMELESS!!!!!

Posted by Segun 2 on Jan 04 2010

LOL. The very first line of the story gives the name & address of the Church but some people just cannot see it.Just like the Akingbola story of last Friday were some people just concluded that Akingbola stole N347bn whereas there was nowhere in the story that it was so stated.

@ thecross, Baba Bolaji and Ojulari: The first edition of this online article which people like Spain Base, Nas, Dayo, and Yoyo read, did not contain the name, denomination and location of the church. Hence, their enquiries. The article was then updated with those details, following which YOU read it. You owe them an apology.

This is good, at least some preachers are starting to make "Thieves" feel uncomfortable in church. And who would believe that "good old Anglican Church" is leading the way and not the Pentecostals. Now that politicians have moved to Pentecostal churches, I guess our Catholic and Anglican churches are the new opposition parties.

Posted by me on Jan 04 2010

Winners speaks against corruption. Have you ever attended the church? Try it one of these days.

Posted by TruthHurts on Jan 04 2010

Well, whatever was said, manifests the moral rot in our society where the church is used for other motives. I commend the reverend for standing up to be counted. At least it's better than other churches especially so called pentecostal ones using the gospel of Jesus Christ for their own personal ambitions. At least the only fast moving business in Nigeria now is establishing a church.

Shameless Elders. they are disgrace to our nation and their church. God will surely punish them for fighting in His house.

It is clear it's end time. Such that happened is not new and I pray that God in his infinite mercy will uphold his servants to preach his word undilulated.

What is the country turning into? So nobody can talk again? Na wa oo!

Posted by Aleakwe86 on Jan 04 2010

We need more priests and pastors like these that'd say the truth the way it is.

Posted by oneway thinking on Jan 04 2010

I have attended more winners services than I would care to admit (God restitute those wasted time!) - never once was corruption mentioned...or is it the new fad...

Posted by saydura on Jan 04 2010

It is sad to read that someone like Okunrounmu can be part of this evil spirited issue in God's own place. So if the vicar is raining curses on the pulpit, was he directing them to you or you have skeleton in your wardrobe? The Egbas are beginning to show their wicked side now..on the first sunday of the year chasing people out of a church. Woe unto you all who partake in such shameful act. I hope the Bishop of Egba will not make a damn mistake to replace this clergy man...politicians should be told that they have brought the country to this level. All of us are noe suffering from what Umar did in America...another bred of useless politician.

Talk about politics in the house of God. I wonder if Hell is going to contain some poeple bcos they dont fear the wrath of God.

I wonder why most people should be passing jugement or coments on what a single 'paid Journalist' wrote. It was only NTA Media man at the scene which means that the story must have been sold to other Media Houses. He made no proper investigation before going to press. The Priest as a man of God should not be spitting fire of courses on the congregation because he was not allowed to lavishly spend the church morney/contributions in the name of evangelism which only paid back to his personal pocket. He is the only Priest who collects the highest allowance amongst his peers in Egba Diocese. Ask of the anticedental behaviours of the Priest from the Church at Ikija(IBEREKODO), St Stephen, Ilugun and other Churches he pastored. Although Baba Ijo at Sodubi over reacted on the issue, he should have soft-pedalled to save his name, his action has nothing to do with his political life.
