Aero suspends free in-flight catering

Print print Email email Share Share

Aero Contractors, one of the oldest airlines in the country, on Thursday announced plans to launch onboard sales catering services on all its domestic destinations, while suspending its regular free distribution of snacks to passengers.

The product, Sky Snax, which is only going to be available in the economy class cabin of the airline, is aimed at providing passengers with the option of purchasing breakfast, lunch or dinner on board the carrier's flights from a selected menu.

"From November 16, passengers on our airline will have choices to make from our range of menus," said Shaf Syed, managing director of the airline.

Mr. Syed outlined the menus to include sandwiches, toasted sandwiches, variety of snacks, beverages and soft drinks, adding that the products will be within a range of N50 to N400 depending on the passenger's substantial budget.

Asked if the airline will continue with the regular free catering services served onboard, Mr. Syed disclosed that the distribution of free meals in-flight Aero will be suspended, stressing that the economic situation confronting companies worldwide, and airlines in particular requires thorough streamlining of cost.

"These are hard times, not just to airlines, but for companies globally; so airlines now have to focus on cutting cost," he said. "Any of our esteemed customer that wants to be served meal while onboard our aircraft will have to pay for the service; for when you pay for a fare, that excludes the meal onboard."

The carrier's boss disclosed that companies need to strategize in order stay alive, adding that financial stability is paramount for airlines to thrive in the prevailing "harsh economic downturn."

"If survival is the name of the game in the industry, then we have to look at some of these things," he said. "After safety in this aviation sector, the next thing is financial stability."

Paul Bryan, commercial consultant for the airline, disclosed that the carrier had to introduce the product as a result of reports from their flight crew members and customers on issues concerning their in-flight menu.

"We took a lot of feed back from our cabin crew and some of our passengers before we came up with this idea," he said.

Mr. Bryan further disclosed that the airline went for snacks rather than solid food because of the flight duration on routes which it covers domestically.

"Flight times on most routes in this country are short and that is why we are going with snacks and drinks rather than rice or any other solid food," he said.

Early this year, Aero Contractors introduced low cost airfares of N5,000 and N7,000 which are to be booked online. The airline's boss disclosed that only about ten per cent of its domestic travellers patronized the carrier's online service at inception, stressing that the carrier now records over 70 per cent.

"We are happy with this development, and we are willing to do more, that is why we are offering our customers this exciting menu offer," he said.

flying in nigeria is not a salivating experience

Posted by Chinua ASUZU on Nov 13 2009

Great idea! Aero is always ahead with sound economics, passed down to passengers.

Posted by Ayoka on Nov 13 2009

This I would like to see. It's not as if they had an exciting menu before;maybe they should just suspend in-flight catering altogether. Are we supposed to reach into the overhead cabins for our purses in our bags so we can pay for the food? And will the menu be printed on our boarding passes, so that before the stewards get to us we know what we are eating and paying for?

This is good thinking and good business for AERO. I always wonder why Nigerian air lines serve food on local flights. Why, what for? Here it is not done, even for a three hour flight or more as long as it is domestic. They will only give you water and in some cases some flat mint that melt in your mouth. But Aero for a 45 to 50 minutes flight to PH, you will be served apple, sandwiches, soft drinks or can beer. In addtion you will be given tom-tom during take off and landing. Now, let the passengers pay for their snacks. Aero, please make sure you have small naira denominations as change just in case some passengers will give your hostesses N1,000 note and there is no change meanwhile the guy is already munching the snack. You can give them tom-tom or any type of sugar candy free.

yoshinai!!!

Posted by Erus on Nov 13 2009

i dont even like that cake or peanut. To me, it does not make any change anything. Good luck Aero.

Posted by Gbemiga Owolabi on Nov 13 2009

Has anybody thought of the logistics nightmare? Naira changes , small denominations, endless chat with stewards over your preference when the person beside you wants just silence, movement back and forth on the aisle ?etc

Posted by Habib on Nov 13 2009

@babs, when did Aero serve u Can Beer? d idea by Aero is cool, but dont promote the airline as if they've done wonders, they are only trying to stay alive considering the rush for low fares by passengers. Aero pls consider guys who have no money but booked wit their last card just to save the stress on Nign roads; bring back d free meals, no matter how little.

Posted by Richard Oshowole on Nov 13 2009

A great move. The cake or cashew nuts with a glass of juice or water was boring. In the not too recent past, I recall sandwhiches and a beer being available on the Lagos - Abuja route though then the Aero fair was much higher than others. At least now, one has more of a choice.

Posted by TJ on Nov 13 2009

The era of budget airlines has come upon us. With those kind of low fares they have had to charge to compete in these times, there is no way some of the frills will not be shaved off. However, me-thinks this will be a logistic problem. Looking for change, changing orders, etc. And when people, pay, expect them to make more demands. It is like having Duty Free on a one hour flight. Why not take away the catering totally and replace with a drink or something? Interesting times

Posted by Iwuala Chukwunomnso on Nov 13 2009

@Habib, u did not remember to tell Aero to reduce their fare to be in line with the buy-your-meal policy, and do remember that there is no free lunch even in Freetown.

Posted by R. Jackson on Nov 13 2009

@Babs: Aero serves "apple, sandwiches, soft drinks or can beer" ... ? That is simply not true.

Posted by Sasha (VTV) on Nov 13 2009

I really dont know which aero Babs Dodo takes thats serves apples, sandwiches, soft drinks and can bear. The normal aero the rest of the world takes serves a cup or pack of juice and peanuts or cake. How expensive can that be. At the most (with our nigerian style) lets call it N500. Instead of Aero embarrassing itself on the pages of newspapers, why dont they add it to the N5,000 and N7,000 air ticket fare.. Can you imagine the nuisance looking for change and saying "i dont want this money, its old its torn" will cause on board?... i dont think this was well thought out

Posted by agbo on Nov 13 2009

this airline is going down mark my word.

Posted by 9jababe on Nov 13 2009

@Habib, I was trying to figure out when Aero served beer too, thought I had missed out for a minute..lol! But in all seriousness its quite stressful getting to the airport through traffic etc, that 15ml cup of juice, water etc is sometimes a relief. I'm not against paying for food and drinks as long as its better than the rock hard pastries they currently give away as free.

Posted by Iwuala Chukwunomnso on Nov 13 2009

@R.Jackson, Babs is right. Aero use to do that before they started the cutting down measures.

Posted by jibs on Nov 13 2009

it is not a lie, the good old days of Aero, the airline used to serve can beer, soft drinks, apple, and sandwiches. i personally recall enjoying the service on thier lagos-warri-PH route. The nuts and cup of water/juice service started when their expansion to other routes began.

Posted by Adetola on Nov 13 2009

In my opinion, they have two choices: increase the flight fare to accomodate the refreshments served on board or stop serving refreshments altogether. Asking people to buy refreshements on board will only turn the flights into another market place. I forsee a situation where even after landing, purchases are still been made!

Posted by Doc on Nov 13 2009

cant help but laugh at habib and babs, but really babs went way too far by declaring cans of beer was served in the aero hey days, mega-faboo! truth be said, price has to be paid for the subsidy offerered customers, or how else is aero expected to survive?

Posted by mai harka on Nov 13 2009

Smart move. Aero is funally carving a niche for itself as a budget airline. Strip out all the unecessary expenses. Cheap flights means no need to supply stuff like refrshments. For goodness sake our flights are too short for such. I am sure Arik or "Nig Eagle Air" may offer more refreshments for the people who like to eat on board. As for me four factors matter when taking flights in Nigeria: 1. Safety 2. Easy checkin 3. Getting to my destination on schedule. 4. Quick pickup of my baggage. Everything else is pheripheral.

Posted by Danny on Nov 13 2009

It reminds me of a Virgin Nigeria flight from Gatwick to Lagos sometime last year. The uncontrolled buying and selling (actually hawking by the air hostesses) in the aircraft had to be stopped by the Captain when it was gradually turning into a typical day at Oshodi Market

Posted by Aliyu Oba Ajikobi on Nov 13 2009

If you like dont fly again. AERO is always introducing bad policies, imagine their flight from Lagos to Abuja in the nite costing TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND NAIRA. How i wish you dont fly again.

Posted by Buddy on Nov 13 2009

Once had a can of beer on AERO

Posted by The Maverick on Nov 13 2009

I bet Aero and their invisible survey of passenger and crew members must have figured out an ordering process. Why do we always bring out wacky ideas in this country? Don't be surprised that 30mins after landing, passengers, and crew will still be roaming Airport carpark looking for balance. Anyway maybe their sales boys/girls will hawk the goods at the boarding gate. Na Wa O!

Posted by TD on Nov 13 2009

You better be sitting in front if you want to get served. Airline Stewards will now become cashiers? Best thing is to have people choose and bay BEFORE boarding! You have to give them credit for innovating though.

Posted by NIGERIAN on Nov 13 2009

Aero u have not started the sales but you've already generated arguments among your customers; whether a good or bad idea, I hope the selling of snacks and soft drinks will not cause problems on board.

Posted by Emma E. E. on Nov 13 2009

If the food (sorry, I meant the snacks) will cost only between N50 and N400, as Aero's spokesman claims, then why are they not continuing with serving passengers the cake/sausage roll and 25ml drink pack they currently serve? That stuff, even if they bought it retail from Mr Bigg's, is just about N200 so they already make immense profit on their meals! Aero si trying to be too smart by half. This should be ARIK's chance to win the market by offering real food to passengers at no extra cost. I miss ADC of yore. Recall they used to serve us rice and dodo on local flights in the 1990s!!

Posted by Nayomie on Nov 13 2009

I find that after eating the cake/cashew nut and juice im more hungry, angry, than satisfied. They should conduct some research on what their passengers really want. We need more players in the Aviation sector, I personally do not like Aero's service, but the other airlines aren't any better. I'm sick of Nigerian airlines

Posted by Joyce on Nov 13 2009

Did Aero recruit people write the beautiful comments on their in-flight services? Please cut it off! Serve the dan snacks. they are just adequate for the flights within Nigeria!

Posted by Bello on Nov 13 2009

It actually worked for AirAsia. I hope Aero will not ask passengers to pay for using the lavatory on board.

Posted by Slim on Nov 13 2009

Them for serve pounded yam and okro soup na. At Least that way I know I am buying betta food. Aero I beg add Poundy, eba, santana with correct ewedu and okro for ya menu I beg.

Posted by Val on Nov 13 2009

Aero should simply have added the N400 to the fare! That won't kill anybody. The administration of these sales will surely be a nightmare.

Posted by JB on Nov 13 2009

EXCELLENT IDEA! I've often wondered why Nigerian airlines bother to serve more than the peanuts that are often rudely tossed at passengers by US airlines (together with a cup of ICE flavored with a few droplets of soda). This idea is much better than that of many US airlines to charge for all but carry-on luggage.

Posted by tosin on Nov 13 2009

How can 2 air hostesses handle 100 passengers with different snack and drink requests in 45 minutes? AERO is asking for trouble. They should better maintain the status quo or add 120 naira to the price of the ticket to cover for the slice of cake and the 25cl of coke they serve. They should also give us newspapers/an in flight magazine. They used to have that as at March this year. i was so disappointed when i flew AERO last week and didnt get anything to read. Whatever they do, they should please carry us to our destinations in one piece because my people, flying in Nigeria is a big act of faith!

Posted by Enyinnaya on Nov 13 2009

we no go miss am

Tosin, abeg buy your own newspaper...LOL!

I don't think aero has to be put on the spot because they are trying to survive. Has anyone heard of global recession? It means that the whole world is affected, not just Nigeria. With airlines shutting down worldwide, flight cancellations and combination of two flights into one due low pax turnout, retrenchment / pay cuts by banks and other companies in nigeria, only a blind person should expect things to remain the same. The only problem with this new idea of aero wll be the poor cabin crew who will receive lots of insults from passengers due change, etc.Airlines should cancel out snacks, sold or otherwise and just serve a drink.45 -55 minutes and nigerians feel they ask for the earth simply because they paid!Eat at home or outside before boarding!Flights are to convey you from point a to b. don't know why the stomach affair is such an issue. Aero,Virgin Nigeria, Arik,Dana etc., i beg, cancel all inflight catering and serve drinks only if it means staying afloat and ensuring safety. Good luck!

Posted by Uduak on Nov 14 2009

It's a strategy to stay afloat and make profit. These are tough times for many companies in Nigeria. For those of you who think it will turn out to be a market affair on the plane - "where my change dey?". I don't think so. Those who want to be served refreshments will be required to pay a sum as a part of the flight ticket costs for this service. I guess this is similar to what they introduced with the Insurance for Luggage loss/damage even though I had the bad experience of having my luggage damaged during an Aero flight and not being able to claim damages even though I had paid for insurance. Two issues are pertinent though: May it not arise that a Customer pays for refreshments and he did not get it during the flight - That might lead to a boxing match on the plane - anarchy!!! Also when the credit crunch recedes will things go back to the way they used to be? Your answer is as good as mine.

Posted by Temi on Nov 14 2009

Hahahaha....I can't stop laughing at all the comments. Very hilarious. imagine the hostess with apron stashed with money dishing out change admist shouts of 'madam' 'madam' my change! come server me! hahahahaa very funny. But sincerely I guess they will make the option available while purchasing tickets online and fully paid. Else one hostess might just have to ask the pilot for change or annouce 'hold your change while boarding' hahahaaha

Ladies & Gentlemen, you have all been so kind as to have furnished aero with an excellent feedback mechanism at no cost. Aero would certainly be better for it. You may not have filled a questionnaire on this matter mind you. Innovative & bold policies like this irrespective of how many knocks they receive is no doubt the reason why Aero has been able to stay afloat as one of our most preferred airlines in all this time. Listing other airlines (whom I am sure we can still recall) which have taken a plunge into the abyss of extinction would only open up an unnecessary debate. It is an elementary fact that you cannot please everyone in business even though you are expected to consistently improve customer satisfaction. Aero would do well to take a very good look at some of the more constructive comments here mentioned to enable it fine tune its next line of action. I wish them all the best.

Posted by aerodynamics on Nov 14 2009

Will they allow passengers to bring their own food as well?

Posted by Ojulari Abdulkabir Tola on Nov 14 2009

This is a good thought to meet up with standard in aviation industry globally. Aero has a lot of reason to cut cost. Nigerian Airline operators pay huge amount of money for air services and ground operations, there is a lot of problem in this country. The FAAN charges are too much to bear and the most annoying scenerio is what are they doing with all charges. Poor terminals, poor in-door services, poor operations... Imagine! Passengers should be bear with the airlines. It is always so in some other international airlines

Posted by Eze Ukpo on Nov 14 2009

Yet again, NEXT impresses its readers by being the only newspaper with a critical/investigative take on journalism. It's the only paper that dug up the truth: This is a cost-cutting exercise, and not an "innovation" as Aero is sugar coating it !!!

Posted by Gee on Nov 15 2009

I think paying for meaks on board will only work if payment is electronic only

Posted by Michael Effiong on Nov 15 2009

This is a defining moment for Aero, they could have introduced this at the same time as the on-line low budget fares. But my honest opinion is that flying on aero will be noisier, rowdy and very unfriendly since their in-flight attendants will always be on the edge because of the extra demanding job of taking orders, collecting change etc.Count me out!And except they make the low fares general, it will amount to cutting the nose to spite the face. How can you fly 55 mins to Abuja or Calabar without refreshments, it is suicidal idea.

Posted by Richard Milton on Nov 15 2009

Good business cut operational costs and in-view reduce prices even further, innovation at its best!! carry on the good job guys..

JUST PRAY WE LAND WHEN WE SHLD PLUS PLANE WLDNT CATCH FIRE WITH THIS NEW KITCHENET IDEA....JUST STICK TO THE LIGHT SNACKS PLS...IF POSSIBLE ON REQUEST!

Posted by alex okudu on Nov 16 2009

instead of thinking of ways to make it work, all you see is criticism, they introduced cheap flights and we're all enjoying it,so if we have to sacrifice the small cake and a disposable cup full of juice/water/carbonated drink, then so be it,as for how they plan to carry it out...serving meals isn't exactly rocket science, there are over a million ways to carry this thing out effectively...these guys have been running the airline for 20+ years so selling meals is really a no brainer good luck aero...pls put akara and akamu on the menu abeg

Posted by Val Oji on Nov 16 2009

Great idea from Aero, but it will create logistics nightmare for the reputable airline. This will surely back fire. Your reputation will take a knock when you start implementing a new idea that isnt well though out, and you re then forced to stop. My candid advice. Drop the idea of serving anything completely for economy passengers only.Dont try to do too many things well at the same time. Please concentrate on your core competence - providing safe and comfortable planes for passengers.
