A respondent in a divorce suit in Lagos on Wednesday consented to the dissolution of his marriage, saying in tears that his wife starved him of sex for years.
Sulaimon Oloshogbo, 42, asked the Shomolu Customary Court to grant his wife’s prayer for the dissolution of their 13-year-old marriage.
Mr. Oloshogbo, who resides at 11, Apata Street, Shomolu, told the court that his wife, Fatimoh, 37, stopped having sex with him since four years ago.
“My wife’s attitude changed completely when she started moving with some divorcees on our street; she never obeys me,” said. Mr. Sulaimon, a carpenter.
He was responding to a divorce suit filed by hi wife who urged the court to dissolve the marriage, saying she was no longer interested in the relationship.
“My husband is a devil; he always beats me over a little misunderstanding. My husband smokes Indian hemp; he is also a drunkard; he beats his children with wire,” Mrs. Oloshogbo, a bread seller, said. The mother of three pleaded with the court to grant her the custody of all the children.
The Court’s president, Aromi Bajulaiye, adjourned the case till January 27, 2010 for further hearing and to allow room for possible reconciliation.
The couple, in a previous sitting, narrowly escaped detention by the court over contempt as the husband and the wife abused each other inside the courtroom during proceedings. Mr. Bajulaiye ordered their detention in a small cell in the court’s premises but the security guard to execute the order was not available.
The court’s president, however, pardoned the couple some minutes later and resumed the hearing.
