Unemployed graduates get lifeline

A competition titled ‘Certiport Microsoft Office 2007 challenge for the unemployed graduate', is being organised by ReadManna Ventures Ltd to certify unemployed graduates who have the proficiency required in a business environment.

Edna Agusto, ReadManna's managing director, said Nigerians who are Microsoft Office programs certified, stand a better chance of gaining employment or managing their own businesses.

"In the business world, people seeking employment must have a good understanding of Microsoft Office programs comprising Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook. And employers of labour seek to hire certified individuals to improve their existing workforce," Mrs Agusto said.

She said the nationwide competition, opened to unemployed graduates below the age of 30, will be based on the Microsoft Word 2007, Microsoft Excel 2007 and Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 programs.

She said besides cash prizes, 100 finalists at the competition, which started on Oct. 1, 2009 and ends on Feb. 26, 2010, will be interviewed by leading Nigerian companies at a Microsoft Office job fair in Lagos.

Prospective workers

Looking forward to the job fair is the Managing Director of KarRox Technologies Limited, Sunil Dhanuka, who said at least five finalists will be employed by his company. KarRox Technologies is an information technology training company.

"As far as Microsoft certification is concerned, we all know that anywhere there is a computer and an organisation, they require Microsoft application knowledge. It is easier for job seekers to get jobs if they are computer-literate based on what they can actually achieve on the computer. And Microsoft application will be the foremost thing that can give them jobs faster, Mr. Dhanuka said.

Also, Fate Foundation's Head of Training, Elizabeth Olofin, said besides cash prizes, the first three winners of the competition will be given scholarships to build entrepreneurship skills through a four-month programme. Fate Foundation, a non-profit organisation, fosters the growth of businesses in Nigeria.

"We expect the winners to be graduates and they should have business ideas. What the Fate Aspiring Entrepreneurs Program does is to give them the pedigree to pursue those ideas," Mrs Olofin said.

Eligibility

To participate, competitors must buy vouchers to take online tests for each software (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) at designated testing centres all over Nigeria and register their scores. The top 500 contestants will be short-listed and will retake the test at the same time. The contestant with the best aggregate score wins ₦1million; second, ₦500,000; third, ₦250,000 and the next best 10 scores would get ₦100,000 each.

"Each voucher costs ₦5,000 per software, amounting to ₦15,000 for the three software. These three make a complete package because in an office environment you find that people use these three the most. All information can be found at www.readmanna.net," Mrs Agusto said.

But Tope Obayomi, a computer studies instructor at the Nigeria Opportunities Industrialisation Centre in Gbagada, asked that competition costs be reduced so that unemployed graduates could benefit.

"The competition is a welcome idea. But I think ₦15,000 is too much. Where do they expect someone who is unemployed to get that kind of money? If they can't do it free, they should at least reduce it to ₦2,000 for each of the software," Mr Obayomi said.

Responding on the cost of the vouchers, Mrs. Agusto explained that ReadManna had secured a discount as against the original cost people in other countries paid to take the tests.

"The standard international voucher for each software is $75 (over N11,000) at an exchange rate of N150 to $1. We (ReadManna) said this is too much for Nigerians to pay and negotiated for N5,000 (about $33). And this price is only for this competition. Once over, it goes back to the $75 per software. It is important people understand this," Mrs Agusto said.

ReadManna is the authorised representative of Certiport Inc. in Nigeria, while Certiport is the creator and worldwide distributor of the Microsoft Office Specialist program. It is also responsible for the development, marketing, and administration of certification programs for Microsoft Office products.

i really find it hard to understand how someone unemployed will part with 15grand for a competition he myt not win...why do nigerians like scamming the unfortunate ones among them and leaving the ones that have a steady income and can readily afford to part with money, they prey on our desperation and hope to make something good out of the profit which is quite impossible cos schemes built on unfairness wil only last for a while.before it will crumble amen.

Dear readers, we have taken up your concerns with ReadManna Ventures. According to Mrs. Agusto, the company's managing director, "The standard international voucher for each software is $75 (over N11,000) at an exchange rate of N150 to $1. This is for dully Employed graduates. Where will D unemployed get N15k?

Posted by Dolandy on Oct 20 2009

For goodness sake, THIS is not and never, I say never be a lifeline for someone who is unemployed, NOTE >>> ''An employee can never never be RICH no matter the salary he/she gets paid..." SO I don't buy the idea. Next thing I'm advising any unemployed graduate to do is to ''THINK AND GROW RICH'' i.e. like myself a Motivational Speaker/Information Consultant I did not learn any computer or Microsoft programme from any where but God in His DIVINE MERCIES HAS been my source of knowledge AND has never ever worked for anybody.

I believe this is a brilliant idea, first you get a chance to be certified, which is an added advantage on your CV and yourself (not the management of Readmanna). And secondly you stand a chance to win N1m (if you come first) plus employment....whatelse do you guys want. haba...

The best way out of unemployment is skill acquisition and that is the whole essence of this project...i am not connected to this project in any way but i think it should be applauded... for the records, Certiport is the world’s only globally recognized, standards-based credential for validating desktop computer skills… Because Microsoft Office Specialist is the official Microsoft Office certification for desktop productivity, it is the premier credential accepted by employers and chosen by individuals seeking to validate their skills and jumpstart their careers....It is no different from all the certification/ professional exams Nigerians take to advance their lives...now, ReadManna is making the certification accessible to unemployed people at a subsidized price in addition to standing the chance of winning in the competition...why would that be a fraud???... how many people (employed or unemployed) can afford the cost of education these days...but people still try their best cos they understand that knowledge is always worth its cost...so why pay $77 for Certiport certification if ReadManna can help subsidy it for $33 to give unemployed youth a chance at improving their employability....Nigerians, please always seek complete knowledge of issues before making comments...ignorance can kill and do kill...

Pls take note 15000 naira from 1million unemployed graduates is 15billion & not 15million as posted in earlier comments. People should be sincere this is first a self enrichment project by the organisers.

Wetin dis people dey plan? How them want make this people for take bring 15k come out?and only three people go win...

SCAM is written all over this piece. It is only a dull graduate will spend that amount on learning MS Office. The 15k can be used to get a cheap pc to learn on their own. NEXT editor, please check this people out as I believe they are out to cash in on the situation in Nigeria. Who told them, you will use all these at work. It is a lie that employers ask about MS Office. I don't use MS office, does that mean I am unemployable. If this company really wants to help, they should just offer the course free, and make the entry fee free. They will be surprised that Nigerians will pass their test. There is nothing to about the competition on their website. In fact I have serious doubt about this company. They should employ a qualified software test engineer to test their site.

where can i register?

Posted by Gbenga Odunayo on Oct 23 2009

The idea is to enhance employment chances but getting internationally certified. Remember that 15k is not coming to organizers pocket it is the fees that certiport international charges for conduct of three exams. N5,000 for international exam available in Nigeria(we need to decide weather it is cheap or not). But notwithstanding with advancement of use computers in Nigeria computer knowledge plays a pivotal roll in getting jobworthy.

Well, it's on the high side to pay N15k for the 3exams, i guess,it's just a way to weed down or reduce number of participants, but it would pay to feel the pain as long as it yeilds success, besides, the experience would add to your CV greatly. The organisers should try cut down on the entry cost,N3000 is a good start
