In Jakande Estate the roads have the garbage

Residents of Jakande Estate in Mile 2, Lagos, now dump their garbage on the estate's roads. Many of the residents said they resorted to such action because the refuse collectors have not shown up to collect their refuse for over a month.

"Maybe seeing it [refuse] there will make them respond quickly to come and pack them" said Alare Bashorun, a resident of the estate.

The residents also accused the local government of neglecting the community. They said the local government was not extending its cleanliness culture to them.

"Imagine the look of an estate," said Ronke Sally, a shop owner in the estate. "If the government was taking care of this place, would it have looked this way?"

The trash on the roadside is an issue for many passers-by. Lanre Omotosho, a visitor to the estate, said it was unnecessary to dump refuse along the road.

"What are they trying to prove?," he asked. "It is an eyesore, and it is insulting to have such here. I am not saying the government is right, not coming to collect the refuse, but it is not wise to dump them here."

The local government chairperson, Ayodele Adewale, reacted differently.

"They (residents) don't patronise the government refuse collector," he said. "They prefer the local cart pushers. My men go to the estate to mop and scrub the area at least three times a week. We are trying our best. They are the ones not cooperating with us."

Residents however denied the local council boss' claim.

"What is he talking about?," said Adekunle Odubena, "scrub here? Why do we then have this dirt here?"

Akusara Okoro, another resident, said the chairperson's statement was contradictory.

"Refuse collectors have not come to pick our refuse, and he is talking about scrubbing and mopping the estate," she said. "What does scrubbing and mopping got to do with collecting our refuse?"

Mile 2 Estate is one of the estates built by Lateef Jakande, the former governor of Lagos State between 1979 and 1983.

I grew up in this estate, things were not like this. People should have a change of attitude. God help us!
