Wading through water to learn in Lagos

Whoever composed the song "Rain, rain go away" must have been standing in a pond of flood water at one of Lagos State's public schools. Students at Oluwa Primary and Araromi Primary schools in Olodi-Apapa had to wade to their classrooms in knee-deep water on Thursday due to the heavy rains Lagos has had recently.

"Just look at everything," said a teacher at Araromi Primary School. "Our students cannot play. They are limited by this flood."

Younger kids who looked like they could be overcome by the water were borne on the backs of older students or their parents.

"I have to carry my child come here every day (sic)," said Amaka Oliseh, who bore her daughter on her back. "I no want my child to put her leg for the dirty water. I beg the government to do something about this water."

Another parent, Adaobi Nzube, said she regretted sending her child to a public school.

"You hardly see this kind of thing in private schools," she said. "Poverty is a disease. Government should try and do something before our children die here."

Bayewu Kamal, the chairman of Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government Area where the schools are situated, said that the government was trying to work on the flood problem.

"We are aware," he said. "We have been draining water there but the school is below the water level. So what we are doing is an imperative measure. We cannot get a permanent solution immediately."

From all indications, the school in topic is a public school because I know no private school proprietor would allow anything like flood to hinder their business. But government don't care since their children don't attend public schools reserved for children from poor homes. Aside from the inaccessibility and children have to be carried across the flood to get into the school compound, there is the danger of children getting infected with guinea worm in such dirty water. Believe me, some children would still find it delightful to play games in that water. This type of neglect in public schools is one of the reasons why many parents would do anything to send their children to private schools. It is also one of the reasons why competition among poor Nigerians to climb the social ladder into the middle class level has thrown morals to the wind. It is also one of the reasons behind the get rich at all cost that has set Nigerians against Nigeria. Who would want his or her own children to attend a school in a flooded ground, where the wall can cave in and take lives, if you can get money to send them to a school in a safer environment? The excuse given by the Chairman of Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Governmnet Area that they have been draining the water, the school is below sea level and there can be no permanent solution immediately is garbage. Let the Local Government Council relocate the school within a distance that would not displace the pupils.

Government should not allow the glory of public schools to die, after all, majority of the prominent men in Nigeria President, Governors, inclusive attended public school. The government should not allow public schools to be suffering thereby discouraging parents and guardians from sending their kids there. It is not only in Lagos State that this problem exists, even in all states of the federation, public schools are being negeleted as well as their teachers. All hands should be on deck to protect and bring back the glory of Public school back.
