Assembly condemns Anambra election

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji said yesterday that though the Anambra governorship election was not as violent “as it used to be,” it was nevertheless marred with irregularities, especially with regard to the voters registers.

He also said the nation should not be deceived by the Peoples Democratic Party’s congratulatory message to Peter Obi, the declared winner. “We are no fools and will not allow the PDP to use Anambra election to deceive us,” said Mr. Ikuforiji who said his party will be better prepared for the 2011 general elections.

The Speaker was reacting to the message sent to Mr. Obi by the PDP’s flag bearer in the election, Chukwuma Soludo, and the Vice President, Goodluck Jonathan.

Tolani Alogba (Ibeju/Lekki II), who is a PDP member in the House said the congratulatory messages proved that “PDP is not saying elections must be won at all cost.”

Olamilekan Adeola (Alimosho II), however, said that INEC needs to explain why there were about 1.8 million registered voters but only about 300,000 cast votes.

“Our people (Action Congress supporters) were disenfranchised and could not vote,” he said.

Oludayo Fafunmi (Ifako Ijaye I), who said the election is one of the freest so far, believed the “best player” won the election.

Mr. Adeola disclosed that AC’s candidate, Chris Ngige, will be challenging INEC in court on the conduct of the election.

Every one should close one eye and leave d other one opened bcos we will be doomed very soon, we dont obey common constitution not to talk of electoral reform. Saraki is deceiving is colleages, not knowing that is eye is on the president seat.

i am happy the pdp didn't say it won the election.i am a supporter of AC but i advice they should accept the result even though inec fumbled again by not enablindg over 1million people to vote.Ngige should wait until Obi completes his term.It is ok that Uba did not win because he would have dumped the labour party and return to the pdp like the governors of Bauchi and Imo states.I wish Obi a succesful tenure.

If 1.8million people registered and only 300,000 casted their votes will Inec go to their houses and force them to come and vote? Why do people never stop looking for excuse to cover their failures! The election have been won then Life Goes On!

How can u prove dat some unable to vote are not formulated names 2 start with? Or dont u know dat some are scared of how dat day will look like. Let d winner continiou b/cos he is doing well. Others should put hands 2 help in developing d society.Peter Obi is the best candidate even if he comes out again em go win i wish him d best.

@Ajewole O. Peter its obvious you didn't follow the events in Anambra State on the election day. For your information, People went out to vote only to be told their names were not on INEC register. I wonder how INEC would conduct election without the usual displaying of registered voters list atleast 14 days before election to allow for verification of names, exclusion of deceased voters and correction of mis-spelt names. The election in Anambra was marred by very conspicous irregularities which falls below standard both locally and internationally. The result of that election should be rejected and a fresh election conducted with all those irregularities corrected if we must boost of credible elections in this country as our close neighbour Ghana can do today.

Ajewale, though i will not blame you but if other elections were like that of Anambra, at least by now we would have gone far,Am not from Anambra but i think the election result reflect peoples choice.secondly INEC have seen their lapses and will correct it in future elections,Rome was not built in a day,i believe with anambra election Nigeria democracy is coming to stay.thirdly nothing in this world is 100% efficient, for this reason i commend INEC for the election conducted in anambra.

Charles, I disagree with u.yes there are irregularities accepted but if we sustain the tension and ask INEC to step up, I think we will get better election in the future.election is not perfect anywhere in the world,it can only be improved upon at least to get fair result. Anambra election is not bad.Do u think INEC of 2007 needs any reprimand to rig election under Obasanjo.Obasanjo will just call IWu "PDP should win the election-how u do it Idont know"

Hello Folks, I am supposing that most of the postings here are from Nigerians. We used to pride ourselves with ability to speak and write proper English. I am ashamed of the composition and grammer in most of the postings here. We talk about incapable and incompetent leaders and, if we happened to be elected, is this how we would communicate? We've slowly become uneducated and don't even know it. Shame on us!

CAN PROF IWU OR NOW MR. EWU DO AWAY WITH THE SO CALLED BALLOT BOXES IN NIGERIA. CAN EWU GO TO LEARN FROM IBB/HUMPHERY NWOSU A WORKABLE OPTION A4 SYSTEM. CAN EWU STOP WASTING OUR OIL MONEY ON BOXES THAT NEVER WORKED. NIGERIANS SIMPLY NEED TO WALK TO POLLING STATIONS; GET ACCREDITED, QUEUE UP THE SAME MINUTE ACROSS THE NATION TO VOTE THEIR CHOICES. RESULT IS JUST ANNOUNCED BUT IT IS SEEN THERE AND THEN. THE WINNER KNOWS HE HAS WON OR VICE VERSA. THERE IS NO USELESS COURT CASES. EWU, PLEASE RESIGN NOW SO THAT SOMEONE WHO HAS BRAIN WILL COME IN TO SAVE NIGERIAN FROM COLLAPSE. BRO. EWU, WE ARE TIRED OF YOUR TRICKS AND CORRUPTION. GO HOME TO TELL YOUR CHILDREN THE EVIL YOU HAVE DONE TO

some of those whose names were not on the register may be attributed to multipe registration. if truly INEC used biometrics, cases of multiple registration could be spoted easily and thier names deleted from the register.
