Arik Airlines gets approval to fly direct to United States

The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted technical approval to Arik Airlines to begin flights to the U.S. from November 29, the Director General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority Harold Demuren, said yesterday in Lagos.

The announcement came after both parties met on the technical review of the aviation industry to certify Nigeria for category one status. According to Mr. Demuren, Bellview Airline and Nigerian Eagle Airline, formerly Virgin Nigeria Airways, will also be certified for direct flights to the U.S.

No Category One yet

The NCAA also said that Nigeria had not yet achieved the desired Category One status.

It had been hoped within the aviation sector that category one status could be achieved before the end of the year. The authority disclosed, however, that Nigeria will be able to achieve the status by the end of the first quarter of 2010, saying that new issues are being examined by officials of State's aviation Authority."Basically by the end of the first quarter of next year we must have achieved our aim," Mr. Demuren said. "You should know that anytime these FAA officials visit the country, they come up with certain areas that needs to be treated.

"How to get it

For Category One status to be obtained, a nation's civil aviation authority must have been assessed by the FAA, and must certify and manage airlines in that country in agreement with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) aviation safety and security standards. Upon successful completion of the assessment, Nigerian carriers will start flying directly from the country to the United States of America.

"Another reason why we are moving it forward is because December and January are filled with various holidays, as you know, thanksgiving holidays are already on in some organisations," Mr. Demuren said.He also disclosed that the authority is working hard to ensure that all the technical issues are completed before the end of this year."We are presently on the last review of our phase three of the AOC (Air Operating Certificate) recertification, and the document evaluation has been finished by the authority," he said.

"However, by December, we will make sure that everything in our action plan ranging from technical to other necessary issues would have been fulfilled. But the big test itself will come in the first quarter of next year.

"Good footing?

Martin Ingram, assistant manager Flight Standard Division, who led the 10 member delegation from the States, declined to comment on the preparedness of the authority in achieving the status. However, during the team's last visit in August, they embarked on auditing and "crucial training" of employees of the authority. It was during the last visit of the team that Mr. Demuren expressed the hope that the country could achieve the status before the end of this year.

Next should get a good on-line Editor comments like the posted by TATA or whatever his name is should not be allowed, it does not do justice to good journalism and ridicule this nation

Posted by kokoko on Nov 18 2009

Osu Akande, do you think the US authorities are not aware that allowing our airlines to fly to US direct may increase the trafficking of drugs? TATA can be sarcastis but please let him say what he thinks, you dont have to agree with him.

If Nigerians want things done, things actually get done! Its not too bad to continue to hope. . .

someone has had a humour bypass operation. didn't know such sophisticated surgical procedures were available in nigeria already

Osu Akande you are missing the point of this comments forum. Tata has every right to voice his opinion. The day Next start weeding out comments like Tata's, its credibility will fall.

How I wish there is a plan to fly from Abuja Airport to Heathrow vice versa. So that we student will stop paying the very high amount we pay to BA. The fee from Heathrow to Abuja is unnecessarily too high.

whatever happened to that nigeria airways pilot captain billy eko...was jailed by the eastern district of new york...has he finished his time...? nigeria good people, bad habits.....

Well, yes the United States know the implication of allowing Nigerian Airlines to fly direct but those are security issues that every country has and should tackle without closing boarders. These guys need us as much as we need them to survive so they are also hoping we can reach the standards so that they can increase trade. Go Arik, I will be on that 29th flight

First came the news about Asaba International Airport and now direct flight from US to Nigeria. This all can't come soon enough for international travelers from the South Central region of Nigeria. Imagine not having to deal with the added expense of overnight stay in Lagos, the hassle, the extra time and danger of travel by road before you get to your final destination. This can often take as much as 3 days from Newark New Jersey or JFK in New York to Enugu. This is great news and I hope that it doesn't get "miscarried" as is often the case with our country.

we sure will get there...

What i do not understand is the whole process. If Delta airlines as crappy as it is can fly directly to Nigeria why can't any of the 3 Nigerian Airlines do the same. The nigerian airlines are far better in service and safety than most US airlies.

Nigerian are always at the aim of messing up things, when are we ever going to get it right is not that we don`t try to do the right things at the right time but we get carried away by out various selfish interest which has plague our live. Its a welcome developement to the government and people of nigeria, please FAA of nigeria the ball is in court let keep it real.

Great nation, good people . this is actually a positive one. this is rebranding at its best.am happy for arik. at least some of us that use the airline can attest to their good standard. i just hope that they will not mess the country up. we dont want the nigeria factor to creep in . the standard must be maintained at all time. cheers and congratulations!

Kudos to Arik Airlines on this approval. A friend of mine told me last week that you will be flying to New York. Your air fare is however outrageous. He told me that it is more than N300,000 for an 8 hour flight, Lagos-New York. Arik Airline please rethink the fares. European airlines charges about this range because they pass through their capitals which make it a longer flight. All my best.

to answer Abstract's question, the US is the distinguished and transparent leader in the development and implementation of Airline safety. sorry, corruption and greed among some Nigerian officials make it absolutely necessary to scrutinize their claims of compliance and the physical structures on the ground required for approval of category one status. why cann't the 9ja officials prempt what the US inspectors might find when they visit, eh? a mock inspection in preparation should help them get ready? Look at all the run around to get approval. hey, one contract could just install a non-servicable equipment (settle the ogas,) and people's lives will be in jeopardy. until Nigeria can improve and manage it's own affairs properly (as it appears to be partially doing at the NCC and the ITC sector, and football/soccer, the US and others will continue to have the last say.

@ AHMED: Actually, Arik will begin flying from Abuja to London Heathrow (and vice versa) as from November 26.

Posted by Moktar KANO on Nov 19 2009

For Nigerian Eagle Airlines it's the end, no plane, no money.

Arik Air, Nigeria’s largest commercial airline, today announced the expansion of its international services with the launch of non-stop flights between Lagos and New York (JFK) beginning on Sunday, 29 November 2009. The new route will be Arik Air’s third international service outside of the West Africa region, following the commencement of daily flights to London Heathrow in December 2008 and to Johannesburg, South Africa, in June 2009.

Posted by Guysmat on Nov 19 2009

If it bothers (costs) too much to fly BA from Heathrow to Abuja, then fly Arik from Heathrow to Lagos, catch the next available flight from MM2 (local terminal) to Abuja.

what is the source of money for this arik air...is it not odili, obasanjo and ...rivers state (non beneficiary partner) ...or we shouldn't be asking because we are trying....

Very funny, Tata seems to have a comment on every next article; you have got to be on their payroll. No one can be that committed everyday. But, your comments, which you are entitled, are gibberish, well sometimes not. You seem very witty with a twist. Whatever, Have your own column, you must have a strong following now. And to correct everyone, TATA could be male or female. I think Female.

Please give a break, are we all coco dealers? When did Nigeria join the country of Cocain dealers? YOu are the "PEONS" the local street sellers. On the serious note it is a shame to find out that there is no national air Carier for Nigeria. Now, that we are embarking on experimental move let us wish ourselves the best and hope that we put the Country first before ourselves. We, 'Nigerians' are not all , disorganized, dumb , discretionless and reckless . We have professionals all over the World, within and outside the Country. Yes we can do it if only we want to.

whoever so ever owns Arik, honesty to carry on is very important, what ever you make in money terms, always remember that our fingers are not equal, with large some of money you are making you should bear in mind that, one day you will give accounts to GOD.wethe Odili or Obasanjo and others are the owners, I wish them goodluck. No one will live for ever, death do not know thew richmen or the poor men , when the time comes for anybody to go he will surely leave this sinful planet.Shame on you the corrupt leaders.
