South Africa approves multiple visa for Nigerians

The South African Government, on Saturday, announced the approval of three-year multiple visa to Nigerians with official and diplomatic passports. The Deputy President of South Africa, Klagema Motlanthe, announced this at the 10th anniversary of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission held in Abuja.

Mr. Motlanthe said the approval was a stop-gap for the visa waiver agreement between the two countries which was yet to be signed as a result of the pending review of immigration rules in South Africa. “The South Africa Home Affairs Department is conducting a review of the whole spectrum. In the interim, the South Africa Government has agreed that we will, with immediate effect, offer three year multiple visas to holders of official and diplomatic passports in order to allow time for the review to be completed.

“We are quite optimistic and confident that before our next bi-national meeting, we should be able to address the issue to finality,” Mr. Mothlante said. The Nigerian Vice President, Goodluck Jonathan described the approval as a welcome development.

Pity Goodluck Jonathan who does not understand that South Africa is now Nigeria's new master. Go to their embassy in Lagos and see how gentlemen have to fight in order to gain entry. And how the Mandela boys love the regular show of shame! If they don't, they would have stopped that inhuman system. Now their VP is telling us stories again.

Visa waiver is not the issue, even if you have to isue visa, make system organised. The South African Embassy in Lagos is an eyesore, people have to sleep over to get get an appointment and the security guards, who obviously are not different from their N20 counterparts on our roads are having brisk business. What an embassy; their documents still read their old address after three years of moving top the new one and also carry the name of the commissioner who has left. Governor Fashola and his KAI agency should close down that office for causing residents a nightmare and polluting the environment.

abeg...make we hear word...are we supposed to thank god for this? official passport, which passport is not official? the one from oluwole...official and diplomatic passport holders who travel at govt expense...what do they need multiple visas for?

Africa!! Africa!! Still under the yoke of our former imperialist masters.. Despite the fact that we belong to the same continent we still treat each other with disdain and disrespect. The whole of Africa should be visa free for Africans.. It is time that the leaders of countries in our continent realize that we stand to better the lot our continent by coming together.

sad.........so sad

It is a pity that our leaders shout that Nigerians are not patriotic. But do they care how Nigerians are treated otherwise why would South African embassy continue to treat Nigerian anyhow in Nigeria.A visit to the embassy would reveal this.

Just to think that I was about to take up a Masters Degree program in South Africa. Fortunately we decided to go to the UK (London) ...instead. Thank God some of us are looking inwards for prosperity and growth. This is totally uneccesary .....CRAP.

It is a pity that our leaders are not SENSITIVE to the real meaning of SLAVERY. Let GOD arise and show HIMSELF in NIGERIA. GOD bless SANUSI (CBN GOV), even if he's PARTIAL as claimed by the "SELECTIVE". More to come.

I guess the South Africans have been acidic in Nigeria too. I'm Kenyan and I couldn't help join the wagon. By the way what does oga mean, Nollywood is very popular in Kenya, so is Basket mouth (sic). That guy is hilarious.

this is so sad to see nigerians begging for visa just to visit south africa,we are all africans and thats our motherland ,please movements in all african country should be free for us all just like the european .

Guys, South Africa is trying protect her interests as best she can. She has learnt that too many Nigerian visa seekers are intending to emigrate illegally to their country. They already have a huge illegal immigrant problem. Unfortunately, the measures they have taken to try to stem this deluge is affecting well meaning Nigerian travellers. It's easy to wish Africa was a visa free zone if other Africans wouldn't swamp your country en-masse. You guys threw out Ghanaians en-masse in their hour of need, didn't you?

It is dissapointing to know that Africans are yet to see each other as one. We have more to benefit than lose by opening our doors to brothers and sisters across the continent. We must reflect on the EURO Zone experience to see what a union can do to economies. The UK, who I think out of pride had resisted joining the EU in full had suffered more than any other on that continent considering the financial meltdown. The issue for us Africans should not be entry visas alone, we should focus more on political and economic integration. African social integration remains on the rise if we take music, drama, style, literature, arts, culture etc. into cognizance. Like the old saying goes:"Heaven helps those who help themselves!". Africans unite, no one loves you more than yourself!!!

Does Mr. Klagema Motlanthe of South Africa want Nigerians to go for "Special Thanksgivings" in the churches and mosques because of this 'gesture' as claimed? By the way as one of the African nations, do we need passport to travel to any ECOWAS country? Let the gesture to the Nigerian Diplomats who may wish to go to South Africa to buy or spend their ill-gotten money.

That announcement should be made with the nigerian govt circles and politicians (diplomatic passport holders). The sad thing the SA and now implementing the old style divide and rule principle on nigerians and we just don't know it. They know how selfish our leaders are (not that I feel SA should be a place to run to), provide for their greedy needs and official complaints would stop. Did you hear Goodluck calling it a "welcome development". Are the govt officials the businessmen, students, professionals, etc? We just never get it! However, SA knows the thieving nigerian officials are what they need to come and spend their stolen money.

Am surprised it's for top government officials, what about ordinary citizens that are going to transact business and add to the annual revenue generated by south africa, or is it the looted funds that catches the eyes of the south african goverment?

Whats all the complaining about, what are you going to Safrica for anyways? with all the beautiful places to visit in Nigeria? the sooner you all start thinking inwards the better ! We cant keep talking of corruption and the decay in Nigeria and at the slightest opportunity run away to the UK,US and now SAfrica, you know if South Africans had run away in their time of terrible suppression AKA Apartheid then we would not have a destination to head to. what is the difference between apartheid and Nigerias corruption and decay? not much both destroy and incapacitate an otherwise progressive and positive moving nation crippling the ability of the countries youth to move ahead and ride the tide of growth ! Stay in NIGERIA and FIGHT this DISEAESE or ELSE WE WILL NEVER GET RID OF THESE GREEDY BUGGERS THAT CALL THEMESELVES OUR RULERS !

South Africa my foot. When most of them are being deported from the UK almost on a daily basis. May God help Nigeria.

Posted by cy on Nov 17 2009

I have gone through all the comments here,i just found out that most of them have not really traveled out of Nigeria before that is why they are even crazy to travel to South Africa,i will only advice people that have not traveled before to listen to those that have traveled, please stay back home, but if you must travel, please have a reason to to so,there is nothing in South Africa, even the Black South Africans are slaves of the White South Africans, only the whites in South Africans have good jobs,so are you not better than the black South Africans? Please my brothers lets pray and work together to make Nigeria great,we have everything in our great country, all we need is just light, good road, security and good health care, once we have good government,no country can stand us,look at China,American is afraid of China now,so if china can make it, so can we,Nigeria is richer than China only they have government that works.

The rate at which South Africa is deteriorating, a single entry visa will be worthless in two years time talk less o multiple visa.Take it from someone with vested interest in that country. The black man's curse is upon that Nation.Mediocrity and nepotism have come home to roost, full time over there. What stopped Jonathan and Motlanthe flying down to Lagos and see the eyesore that is called a high commission for themselves? I have vowed never to step foot at that building ever again until decency prevails there.I will procure a visa by every other means short of going to that contraption called a high commission.

Good talk Vallos. I agree with what Vallos said. An African travelling to another African country with a genuine passport should enter the African contry without a visa. It is about time we Africans realise that is the way forward for all Africans.

Posted by Dickson on Nov 18 2009

Well alot has been said here already...Instead of a visa waiver,a 3 years multiple visa arose...lol...Nigeria is gold and we are not recognizing that fact. The government of Nigeria should instead make South-Africa beg for entry in Nigeria....Oga ooooo

Posted by Mr John on Nov 18 2009

Since we have been travelling around the world what has changed in the country. I don.t think foreign visas is our problem. As a proverb says, even if you take a monkey to New York, it remains a monkey. Nigerians are surely no monkeys but as a people we need to change ourselves and our ways starting from the man in the mirror. Our The solutions to our problems surely are in Nigeria and not S.A. Or elsewhere.

Posted by Gbenga on Nov 18 2009

Are supposed to celebrate this gesture or what? they can suck on their visas! multiple entry to gov. officials of all class of people!!

Posted by Ejik on Nov 18 2009

Its strange how most of you Nigerians are so obsessed with South Africa, the very same people who dont realy give a hoot about Nigeria, accept for our business interests. You dont see us South Africans flocking to the Nigerian embassy like moths to a flame and exibiting all kinds of desperate behaviours so we can go to Nigeria. With the amount of filth and squalor Nigerians bring to SA (Hillbrow) i think our cautionary stance is justified. All the SA nay-sayers will just have to continue to eat humble pie because SA is only going foward. You can talk all kinds of crap about us so you can feel better about yourselves but no one cares. .Mzansi for sho baba

There is nothing in SA, they are just mere slaves to white south africans. Nigeria is way better as long as we know what we are made of. We got the best brains ever in the whole of africa, all we need to do is stay back and use our God given brains. we are so blessed. South africa a few years from now will be hotter than hell cos it is even hell right now. we don't need their visa.....join hands to save Nigeria from shame cos we deserve better than the treatment we get from the people of the world.

Posted by patriot on Dec 20 2009

@ onoja. Where on earth have you been? Black South Africans have never been slaves, matter of fact i think you need to do some research on how you Country played a major role in selling slaves to slave masters. 90% of Nigerians live in poverty so all your bragging is just empty. What we (SA) are now Nigeria will never be even in the next ten years. Thats why you lot are obssesd with SA even though we dont give a sh¤§ about you
