Government to probe death of female corps member

Maharazu Tsiga, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Wednesday, visited corps members serving in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, over the rape and eventual death of a female corps member, Grace Adie Ushang.

The late Ms. Ushang, a native of Cross River State, was raped to death last weekend by men who reportedly took offence because she was wearing her khaki trousers - the official uniform of the corps. Mr. Tsiga, who was in Maiduguri on Wednesday to address the corps members, said the police, detectives and officers of the State Security Service (SSS) are close to tracking down the perpetrators of the act.

“From what I gathered during my visit to the police commissioner and director of the SSS, we will soon get those behind the criminal act and murder of our corps member,” he said.

Though journalists were not allowed to attend Mr. Tsiga’s meeting with the corps members at the Musa Usman Secretariat, in the state capital, the NYSC boss disclosed that he only advised the corps members to be security-conscious.

“I urged them to take their personal security seriously because whatever we provided is not enough. They must learn to be security-conscious,” he said.

The news of Ms. Ushang’s death has led to threats of reprisal attacks in Obudu, Cross River State, where there is a large community of northerners, but elders of the area have been talking to their youth not to visit vengeance on Muslims as the matter is being handled at the national level.

The position of the elders was supported by the member representing Obudu/Bekwara/Obanliku Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Paul Adah, who described the death of Ms. Ushang as dastardly and morally reprehensible.

Mr. Adah said the Cross River State governor, Liyel Imoke, has waded into the matter and is discussing the incident with his Borno State counterpart in a bid to unmask the murderers.

Mr. Tsiga said his visit to the state was part of routine visits to see to the wellbeing of corps members.

“My mission to Maiduguri is part of the responsibility given to me as DG of NYSC; to come and see my corps members, how they are and what they are (doing) and make sure the staff are inspecting them the way they are supposed to,” he said.

“Secondly, I learnt that we lost a corps member. It is my responsibility as a DG; whatever happens to a corps member, I should be there to see the cause of the death, whether accident or otherwise.”

A demoralising action

He appealed to government and people of the state to be more hospitable to corps members, adding that they are in the state for national assignment. He said the young men and women are always ready to render selfless services to the host community, but said that such incidents can demoralise them.

Mr. Tsiga, however, urged corps members to go on with their normal activities. He said the government, security agencies and the Shehu of Borno have assured him of their protection. He also disclosed the readiness of the state government to increase the monthly allowance of corps members in the state. Some of the female corps members, who spoke to NEXT on condition of anonymity, expressed fear over their lives. They also expressed their desire to be transferred out of the state.

The late Ushang was serving at a secondary school in Maiduguri.

I wonder how Mr Tsiga wants the corp members to go about their normal businesses and be more security conscious in such an environment. Ms Ushang lost her live in service to her Country because she wore a uniform provided by a government that could not protect her but can tell her to be more security conscious. It's a must that the government and it's security agencies bring the perpetrators of such heinious crime to book so as to serve as an example to those who would want to hide behind religious inclinations to commit crime.

She didn't deserve it in any way, this kind of act should stop in Nigeria

This is a disgusting and bastardly act and if the DG doesnt catch the rapists and murderers this girl's blood will forever be on his hands. Poor girl,my prayers are with her family,R.I.P

What does the Islamic law have to say for this, or wont it be applicable now because she is an 'infidel'. Why on earth is Nigeria still one country? Who are we deceiving?

The NYSC should be scrapped. This is not the first time the NYSC directorate, the agent of the Nigerian State, will treat with levity the murder of a corper and urge corps members to go about their normal duties in conditions that are worse than abnormal. The unnecessary loss of lives continues because of the profit-motive that makes the NYSC scheme one of the industries in the country run at the expense of young lives for the benefit of the rich and powerful, and for the benefit of the ego of a state that will not face up to the realities of its collapse. Until such a time when society and government show that they are ready to run the NYSC programme properly, please let's stop this scheme that turns fresh university graduates into free booty for killers and exploiters in an evil rite of passage.

Can Mr.Tsiga also tel us d sense behind NYSC? dat function is dead, It shld be scrapped abeg. Imagin losin a daughter 2 sumthin dat has no meanin. A graduate @ dat....Where r we headed 4 9ja??

This is so sad. This was somebody's daughter, sister, and friend. Because she wore khaki trousers? I have lost count of the irrefutable confirmations of how backward the country remains that this sort of crime can happen without national uproar and without prompt prosecution. Shame!

It's a shame how the 'Home of Peace' turned to be. With the events of the last couple of years, Maiduguri's state of security went up in flames.female corpers have been serving in that state with their trousers on for decades. Why now so suddenly, it's a problem?

Today, being our independence day, we had such news. We seriously need to fight corruption in our dear country, WE NEED A CHANGE.

Im with Yaya on this one. all the so called promoters of the NYSC are yet to some up with one reasonable explanation why we should have a scheme that makes no sense, wastes resources and more importantly, has been shown to waste many lives. as it is with many things in Nigeria, personal interest and embezzlement drives them, and nothing more. let them come out with an alternate argument if they can. Who are they fooling indeed, with their Nation building drivel? you uproot young people and basically orphan them in a place where they have no support structure while you grow fatter at the expense of their lives. May God judge you people, all of you..in this lifetime, before our eyes. Amen.

No matter what we say now, the poor girl is dead, and in a very horrible way at that! I tot religion is a means of unification! well that is what i was made to understand, but from the Nigerian experience, it is a means of division and the tool the devil uses the most. Are we the only nation in the world that has a mixture of different religion? Sorry, let me take that again, is Nigeria the only country in the world that has islam along side other religion? for how long are we going to keep up with these terrible and heineous crimes in the name of religion? In the name of islam, because to the best of my knowledge, that is the only religion that has plagued this nation with violence, please correct me if am wrong. I have personnaly been a victim of this and do not wish to see this in my life again. Even if they find the "Killers", will the acts of lunacy cease?? I just need to know. Maybe it will be best to ask every christian and any other religion to move their adherents away from the the north so we will no longer be disturbed by these news. They are always welcome to come live in with us though. Thats why we are better than them!!! No offence meant in any way!

I wonder why so many people have jumped to the conclusion that this is a religious attack. Islam is not against wearing trousers. Many Muslim women wear trousers in Nigeria and the rest of the Muslim world. Tragic as this case is, women get raped every where in the world too regardless of what they are wearing. This is a crime perpetrated by criminally minded rascals who happen to be Muslims. There is no evidence that they were trying to protect their religion. It is most unfortunate that Mr Tsiga does not appear to comprehend the full gravity of this crime and I pray that the offenders are brought to book. But at the same time I also pray that this crime will not be taken out of context and escalate into another religious incident, we have enough to deal with as a country without adding internal skirmishes.

Posted by toyin on Oct 01 2009

hmm, they were offended by her wearing tousers and proceeded to rape her as punishment! A lawless country full of lawless people.

Posted by Stephen Kolo on Oct 01 2009

I find that a government which cannot unravel assassinations signifying its intention to hunt down rapists to be plain stupid. Its totally gross. These problems are beyond what we see. As a nation, we no longer tolerate each other based on our ethnic, cultural and religious differences. Occurences like these were unheard of 20-30 years back. De-humanising acts like this only proves beyond doubt that the Nigerian society is socially and culturally derailing. How do we establish the real motive behind this heineous crime? Can anyone prove it was politically, ethnically or religiously motivated? Are we to beleive that the victim is the only lady who wears trousers in the whole state? Let's be honest to ourselves-we have failed. And the whole idea behind the scheme seems outdated in the present time-the social system which should support the integration intended by the program is no longer viable. It is unacceptable.

Northerners are a bunch of barbarians. It's a pity Miss Ushang lost her life because of a useless national scheme that has suceeded in adding little or no value to the lives of young graduates...PLEASE THE SCHEME SHOULD BE SCRAPPED!!!! For the ALL corp members, they should leave that useless state. We all know that they are cover up the perpertrators in the name of Sharia law adherents. this has happened before in the hinter part of Yobe state to a female corp member and it was covered up.

Posted by busseola on Oct 02 2009

i really wonder the purpose of youth service corp.....please scrap it now....it outlived its usefulness.....

Posted by Chidi Odinkalu on Oct 02 2009

To the Moderator, I really think a line like Niyi's "Northerners are a bunch barbarians" crosses the line and should not pass proper moderation. This young woman, Ms. Ushang, is a victim of a crime that no country or people should allow or tolerate. Rape is a crime all over Nigeria, north or south, east or west. The dressing vigilante that is intent on intruding into the innermost privacies of women and interested in womanhood only for the sake of controlling it also exists all over Nigeria. Senator Ufot Ekaette, who is sponsoring the so-called indecent dressing Bill in the National Assembly whose passage would encourage this kind of vigilante madness on a national scale, represents Akwa Ibom Central, not far from X-River State where Ms. Ushang comes from. There is one way to deal with this. All members of the NYSC should down tools, converge on and march on Abuja until these bastards who did this are found and brought to justice. A government that cannot guarantee the safey and security of its young people, particularly its young women, does not deserve thier service or obedience. May her young soul never rest until the rulers of our country who allow this kind of waste of our best find deserved shame!!

This is absolutely wicked. How can some hostile persons rape a corps member to death?I thought Mr president has given a directive to post corps members to their own states of origin?NYSC and the police should endeavour to bring the culprits to book. This wicked act simply shows the intense level of decadence in the security of lives in Nigeria.May her gentle soul rest in peace.

The programme should be scrapped abeg you in God's name. It's worthless and meaningless. How does a system work where there is no security, they're paid peanuts at the end of a month in a faraway strange land with no relative, close by most times, and there's no guarantee that they'll even be retained after the service. Most times majority of the corpers after the 1yr. programme are back on the streets with no jobs for years that'll follow. Then why pass them tru' this 1 yr. of untold hardship? Of what benefit is the one yr. service to them? After graduating from the university, any job offer they'll get, remains their staring point and 1st year experience. So what is NYSC, for? Lets concentrate on other areas abeg? As for those who commited this crime, it is a great sin against GOD,and huminity. It show you don't have a conscience and can do anything against a human being like you. I mean..., The fact she is a lady would at least have allowed you to spare her life, thats if she was going to be a normal person again, after your rapping her. Why don't you go around rapping and killing everyone in "KHAKHI" Lets see who wins. Authorities and fellow nigerians lets bring these animals to book. R.I.P Grace, and may God give the family the needed strength at this time to bear this loss.

ah i pity the lady the perpetrator should all be held bcos he who fight and run away may live to fight another day

Posted by Lesley Agams on Oct 02 2009

An earleir report of this murder which happned 4 or 5 days ago did not mention indecent dressing as the instigation. How was this conclusion drawn? Were there witnesses? Have the perps been caught? Did they confess? I think we should all be careful in jumping to conclusions. Nigeria is a religious cinder box. We should condemn all forms of violence against women especially sexual violence, violence against women does not know regional ethnic or religious boundaries and should be roundly condemned. Rape is Rape.

Number one reason to scrap NYSC: it puts the graduate without connections at an automatic disadvantage. You spend one year in the middle of nowhere, doing a job for which you are not trained, and being paid peanuts. During that time, you should be NETWORKING and POUNDING THE STREETS looking for a job. The days when there would be a job automatically waiting on completion of NYSC are long gone. Meanwhile, your influential classmate who got posted to one of the major centers has spent a year near the corridors of power. Not surprisingly, they land a plum job somewhere while you are still starting your job search - all because they were available for job interviews, etc. and lived close to where the decision makers are. Tell me also, defenders of NYSC... when last did a state hire a non-indigene on the grounds that they had served their state faithfully for one year, when their own native sons and daughters are still looking for jobs?

Posted by Ajib on Oct 03 2009

NYSC should be scrapped. The initial objectives are lost and beneficiaries of the goodies of NYSC are not the corp members but the likes of those who will tell corpers to be "more security conscious". What happened to those you lost their lives in Jos? We would rather allow our children to stay back home than allow them to be slaughtered in the guise of national service. It is only the children of the poor that that get posted to such places. Those who are "more security conscious" are found in places like Abuja/ Lagos with CBN and the likes.

This scheme needs to be done away with. It's just punishment for seeking higher education.

Posted by milkyM on Oct 06 2009

it is very sad that such a thing has happened. this is why we as a nation should pray for our people that they should change their mindset about the way we think & act. we should learn to love & live with one another. the family of the dead corper should take heart and know that their daughter is in a wondaful place right now in the Lord's Bossom.

Posted by Adewale on Oct 07 2009

As a well concerned fellow corp member serving in Borno state, corpers should no longer be posted to serve in a such a state as Borno state where ther is no peace nor safety. last time it was Boko Aram fighting against Western Education, this time it is an intentional rape-attack on a fellow corp, what/ who is next? It may be my friend. As for me am off.

Posted by nemesis on Oct 10 2009

we all know this story of "close to tracking down the perpetrators" is a big lie. The governor and F.R.N as a whole should do something about this, I'll suggest NYSC starts posting students to their various geo-political zones by their surnames so as to avoid all these "BULLSHIT" from happening. Do you know what it means for parents to pay a child's (talk less of children) school fees to that level in education? I believe if our late Grace Adie Ushang was serving in her zone/region all this nonsense wouldn't have happened. There's no amount of sorries and apologies that can bring dear Grace back. Rest in Peace dear GRACE.

Probe in Nigeria is another word for "Lets just forget it"

Posted by tjazzy on Oct 13 2009

I remember the female teacher who was roasted alive for touching the Quran. I remember the innocent corpers in Jos and I remember the innocent pastors destroyed by Boko Haram. As advanced as Abuja is, thousands of moslems streamed out on a Friday, attacking people because of Miss World. My memory is very long in matters like this. I want to conclude that Northern Nigeria is comfortable in the backwardness that Islam provides for them. If not, why would a cry of "Allah hu Akbar" suddenly turn a sane human being into a raping and killing machine? My solution? If any of your relations wants to go to the North for any reason, Kneel down and beg them to reconsider. If any of my children is posted to the north for NYSC, she will just have to stay at home and wait for the next posting.

My condolence is to all the members of Ushang's family, her friends, loved ones and all those who knew her closely and will miss her so very dearly. As for the perpetrators of the act, they shall NEVER find peace until they are brought to book... even after they repent of their sins, nemesis will catch up with them. They will reap the fruit of their hard labour in hard labour; their daughters and sons will not escape a more bastardly and gross act..... aahhhh alas!!!! they will come out and confess to the hearing of the pubic until then Ushang's blood will continue to cry out from the earth concerning them!!!!!!!!!!!!!! REST IN PEACE MA DEAR.

Posted by Abbey on Oct 17 2009

My the soul of Ushang and all those that have been raped, maimed or killed in Nigeria rest in peace. The people that carry out these acts do not have regard for human lives. Please reflect back, where do we "normally" have these kind of attacks on human lives? Is it in the Western, the Eastern, the Southern or the Northern part of Nigeria? Where is Nigeria Going? The people that carry out these acts do not have regard for education. Why send other peoples' children to go and die for them. They prefere Islamic education than the western education. Please if you don't want to scrap NYSC, because of the money you make out of it, please send the copers to their respective states to serve. The main problem of Nigeria is from the fact that we want to do things together. It has not worked since the scrapping of regional system of government. To go forward and develop, let us scrap all federal ministries, where one person sits in Abuja and formulate solution for someone in Maiduguri, Port Harcout, Kwara, Lagos, Balyesa etc. Let states handle their education, health, power etc and you will see what is called development. See what is happening in Lagos! God is the Judge of all.
