Nigeria ready for first solar project

Nigeria’s aspiration to diversify her sources of electricity generation may materialise next year, as the country’s first solar electricity generation company plans to commence operations before the end of the first quarter.

This indication emerged at the weekend as the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), issued fresh licenses to three new electricity generation companies in Abuja, just as the Federal Government has released the sum of N28.2 billion as subsidy under the multi-year tariff order (MYTO).

Total licensees issued

The new licensees include Wedotebary Nigeria Limited, for the generation of 5 mega watts (MW) of electricity in Bukuru, Plateau State; Coronation Power & Gas Limited, for the operation of the 20MW capacity independent power plant (IPP) for Sona Group at Sango Otta, Ogun State, and DIL Power Limited, for the 135MW plant at Obajana, Lokoja in Kogi State.

About 46MW of the electricity by DIL would be supplied to Obajana Cement Company, while the balance would be injected into the national grid.

Already, a total of 29 licenses, including 20 for grid-connection, two each for embedded and distribution as well as five for off-grid generation, have been issued by commission since its inception.

Imalmudeen Talba, the commission’s sole administrator, said 22 of the licensees are on-grid power generation companies, out of which five are already operational, with additional four set to be commissioned, while six of the eight off-grid generators are in operation, with two expected to start-up soon.

Harnessing renewable energy

With the take off of the first solar power, Mr. Talba said the country is ready to harness the huge potentials for renewable energy sources, including solar, biomass and bio-fuel to help boost the nation’s clean energy and diversify her energy mix.

To guarantee effective operational environment, the commission’s boss said his agency is currently working on appropriate feed-in tariffs and other regulatory incentives to prospective investors, to promote renewable energy generation in the country.

Besides, he said NERC is also establishing a legal and regulatory framework for embedded electricity generation as well as Independent Electricity Distribution Networks to encourage the establishment of off-grid generation/distribution plants in the country to improve access to electricity in the country.

Benefits of solar plant

Yohanna Dalyop, chairman of Wedotebary Limited, told NEXT that his company, which is already supplying solar power to Nigeria Electricity Supply Company in Jos, Plateau State, has achieved about 85 percent completion stage in the construction of its Kyaratt Solar Plant.

“Our target is to commence electricity supply from the plant before the first quarter of next year. Though construction work commenced two years ago, we are even envisaging that we might fast-track the start-up target to ending of December this year,” he said.

He said the plant, whose components comprise Soloba booster machine, Lorong data logger, Fwogos circuit control system, Lodyot kyaratt modem and 400KVA Sogoh Solar inverters as well as 400KVA Giriig transformer, is 100 percent Nigerian, with the capacity to utilise fewer solar modules and power packs to generate electricity.

According to him, the plant’s technology has been designed to supply electricity on any of the three main power distribution lines – 415/11KV, 415.3.3KV and 415/8KV, pointing out that this would ensure that potential customer do not require installation of new distribution facilities outside the existing power distribution network in the country.

Already, Mr. Dalyop said the company has completed the compilation and implementation of a comprehensive meteorological data for each of the geo-political zones and major cities and towns in the country, adding that modalities for the training of local engineers and technicians on solar applications, configuration and systems integration for prospective power purchasers is currently being worked out.

thank God for the progress. i pray that more licences will be given and the power greneration doesnt go to the national grid. let every state investing benefit from it. that way, every state will give incentive to investors to invest in power generation.

This is a good development. Solar energy companies should pls go further by manuacturing solar panels for individual consumption for domestic usage. If solar roffing sheets can be made vailable, it will help in making people to become managers of their own electricity requirement.

Interesting. If only corruption and the business moguls who are presently profiteering from the massive importation of generating sets into this country will allow the scheme succeed.

Why do you need licenses to generate solar energy?, This is another form of bureaucracy, bribery and corruption. Solar energy is technology based, and anybody can generate solar power if you have the equipment and the know how, why does government need to get involved in this private venture? Just tax the businesses as any regular business and let them do what they do!

Energy is important to the country's development and aspiration to be one of the 20th great economies by 2020.The solar energy project is a welcome development and a step in the right direction.Just as we have GSM providers, the federal government should as a matter of urgency make sure that every local government council get a provider for the solar energy,by this the government will be boasting power generation.A pitfall for this is avoiding substandard work and corruption.

No matter how you improve in technology of solar system, our power supply needs to be taken care of. The countries supplying us solar system or generators don't use them in their various countries except in their ghetto. Let's move ahead and address the problem around us, developing the country power system and elevate the system of our economy because I believe most companies folding up because of power supply can not operate on solar system and generating plants because of voltage supplies and expenses.

Apart from the pollution free nature of solar power generation, i think its time for Nigeria to harness solar energy for her Electrical power needs. Mirror Farms and other Electrical power Generating equipments such as inverters can be installed in Estates to carter for their Electrical power needs, and even most Homes can develop their own Electricity this way. I think its time for our young and vibrant Engineers to Make Nigeria GREEN using solar power !

I wish all the all the licensed companies well. Government should make legislation on subsidizing solar and solar related products to make the technology affordable to most Nigerians and all the energy research institutions properly funded and challenged to work with some of these licensed companies to ensure speedy and standard results.

Not until we are able to do things right, we will continue to suffer even in abundance. Many houses in US and other developed countries are now powered by solar and wind energy coutesy skills acquired from various guides in circulation. Giving licence to some companies is another way to failure as saboteur will never let it work.People with technical know how should be encouraged in the production of green energy

Multinational companys in the country should also invest in the commercial generation of solar power as they consume more power in their day-to-day runings. In no time, Nigeria's power problem will be long-gone. I think the Dangote Group has already gotten licenses to generate 135MW of electricity at Obajana. This is a good start!

@ Ojulari Abdulkabir agree with you 200% am based in europe.you just nail it

I have never imagined that this country believes diversifying her power generation systems. Now that we are making this moves, I shall be glad if Renewable Energy Engineering studies is introduced into the curriculum of institutions of Technology and the course should be subsidized for research students. It is high time we built of intellectuals too.

COUNTRIES THAT INVEST IN ALTERNATIVE ENERGY CURRENTLY HAVE A SYSTEM THAT WORKS THEY ARE TRYING TO CUT COST AND REDUCE POLLUTION LETS MAKE THE EXISTING POWER SUPPLY WORK FIRST THEN INVEST IN ALTERNATIVE ENERGY PLS.EVEN IN THE US THAT HAS THE THECNOLOGY IT,S CURRENTLY TOO EXPENSIVE TO JUSTIFY THE INVESTMENT. HERE WE GO AGAIN ANOTHER EMBEZLEMENT PROGRAM.PRODUCTION AND IMPORTATION OF OIL? PLS TALK TO THE VENEZUELANS @50CENTS A GALLON NIGERIA HAS FUEL SHORTAGE?

Yes its a good idea. I concor. Only if there's a sincere attitude and rapid approach to it. I believed things will work out fine. Its a gradual process. God will help us all.
