MTN Nigeria, one of the largest telecommunication providers in Nigeria, is experiencing some technical failures that have crippled communication for subscribers.
In an email to NEXT, Andrew Okeleke, a spokesperson for MTN said: “We had a hardware failure in one of the recharging equipment, which has made it difficult for customers to recharge their lines.”
The technical failure has deprived MTN subscribers of the ability to recharge their mobile phones and as such, has hindered their communication with friends and loved ones.
Subscribers complain
Charles Ifidon, an MTN subscriber said, “I have been trying to recharge my phone for a day now and all I see on my phone is ‘congestion, try later’. This is not good, as I cannot call out now; I have to wait endlessly for people to call me.”
Sandra Eze, another MTN subscriber said: “This problem has been off and on of late. I had to wake up at midnight before I could recharge my phone.”
Tunde Ogunleye, a subscriber of MTN said, “I think MTN needs to upgrade its network. I believe they have the largest number of subscribers in Nigeria today, and their present network does not have the capacity to accommodate their increasing subscribers’ base.”
MTN’s reassurance
Mr. Okeleke, however, reassures subscribers, “our engineers have quickly fixed the failed voucher server, and customers can now load their cards. But due to the backlog of requests to recharge, some customers might still experience difficulties loading their cards. We assure our customers that the difficulty will ease off later today (Friday).”
But some customers, even up till Sunday, complained about difficulties in loading their phones.
In June, MTN Nigeria launched a new numbering prefix; 0813, to add to its other numbering 0803 to 0806 to 0703 and 0706.
“Yes, we have the capacity to accommodate our consumers. Please note that the new numbering range does not have anything to do with recharging of phones,” said Mr. Okeleke.
The Nigerian Communications Commission said at the inauguration of the new numbering prefix that MTN has an active subscriber base of 27.3million.
Implication for business
John Akpan, a recharge card vendor told NEXT that the amount of MTN recharge cards sold have dropped during the week, as a result of the difficulties subscribers are experiencing in recharging their phones. Mr. Akpan, said, “I sell lots of MTN cards in a day but because of the recharging problem customers would ask me first before buying. Because of my location (Victoria Garden City, Ajah) I sell more of the higher denomination but now none of the cards are sold.
Emeka Nwokobia; a business man (car dealer) stressed that his inability to reach out to people has affected his business.
“Because of my inability to recharge my phone, I know that I have lost business opportunities. As a business man one must be reached at all times. This is the period I have to reach my clients fast and because its weekend but MTN has not given me access. I have to reach them (clients) through a pay phone,” said Mr. Nwokobia.
