MTN subscribers complain of communication failure

Print print Email email Share Share

MTN Nigeria, one of the largest telecommunication providers in Nigeria, is experiencing some technical failures that have crippled communication for subscribers.

In an email to NEXT, Andrew Okeleke, a spokesperson for MTN said: “We had a hardware failure in one of the recharging equipment, which has made it difficult for customers to recharge their lines.”

The technical failure has deprived MTN subscribers of the ability to recharge their mobile phones and as such, has hindered their communication with friends and loved ones.

Subscribers complain

Charles Ifidon, an MTN subscriber said, “I have been trying to recharge my phone for a day now and all I see on my phone is ‘congestion, try later’. This is not good, as I cannot call out now; I have to wait endlessly for people to call me.”

Sandra Eze, another MTN subscriber said: “This problem has been off and on of late. I had to wake up at midnight before I could recharge my phone.”

Tunde Ogunleye, a subscriber of MTN said, “I think MTN needs to upgrade its network. I believe they have the largest number of subscribers in Nigeria today, and their present network does not have the capacity to accommodate their increasing subscribers’ base.”

MTN’s reassurance

Mr. Okeleke, however, reassures subscribers, “our engineers have quickly fixed the failed voucher server, and customers can now load their cards. But due to the backlog of requests to recharge, some customers might still experience difficulties loading their cards. We assure our customers that the difficulty will ease off later today (Friday).”

But some customers, even up till Sunday, complained about difficulties in loading their phones.

In June, MTN Nigeria launched a new numbering prefix; 0813, to add to its other numbering 0803 to 0806 to 0703 and 0706.

“Yes, we have the capacity to accommodate our consumers. Please note that the new numbering range does not have anything to do with recharging of phones,” said Mr. Okeleke.

The Nigerian Communications Commission said at the inauguration of the new numbering prefix that MTN has an active subscriber base of 27.3million.

Implication for business

John Akpan, a recharge card vendor told NEXT that the amount of MTN recharge cards sold have dropped during the week, as a result of the difficulties subscribers are experiencing in recharging their phones. Mr. Akpan, said, “I sell lots of MTN cards in a day but because of the recharging problem customers would ask me first before buying. Because of my location (Victoria Garden City, Ajah) I sell more of the higher denomination but now none of the cards are sold.

Emeka Nwokobia; a business man (car dealer) stressed that his inability to reach out to people has affected his business.

“Because of my inability to recharge my phone, I know that I have lost business opportunities. As a business man one must be reached at all times. This is the period I have to reach my clients fast and because its weekend but MTN has not given me access. I have to reach them (clients) through a pay phone,” said Mr. Nwokobia.

I wasn't suprised to read about the three 419 guys that defrauded MTN Nigeria. If I was not a christian, maybe I would have loved to treat them worse. Their services are less than average. The customer care services is about the worst department in their organisation. Unfortunately, it is the image that is been shown to the world. When you need to resolve an issue, if you dial 180, you'll be directed to 181 'to speak with an agent'. Getting to 181, you'll be directed to 'end this call and dial 180' to speak with an agent. As if that was not enough, you may spend the whole day without success since all their agents are always 'currently busy'. When you are 'fortunate' to get through, it's as if you don't have a cassette player at home, hence they will keep on playing their kind of music to your ears for as long as you are able to hold on: no one will ever speak to you. I am not saying what I know not. I experienced that several times yesterday (Sunday) until I finally gave up calling. It has always been the same. I sincerely hope they'll do something about it before their subscribers start to migrate enmass.

J.I.L said it all. I went to MTN main office in Maitama and was advised by the customer relations officer to call 180 whenever I had a problem with their services instead of coming to their office. I handed over my phone to the young lady and asked her to help me make the call and register my complaint. She looked at me and could not say a word. Honestly, I felt like smashing the phone on her head.As I left their office, I decided not to renew my internet subscription with them.Nigerians should vote with their money. Can you imagine a telephone company whose helpline never works? Where else but in Nigeria. I have had enough of the rubbish.

The problem of getting their customer care is appauling.I tried transfering credit, but after the transfer,my N100 was deducted, yet the receiving number wasn't credited.I've called customer care like a mad man and realised how easy is it to pass a camel through the eye of a needle.I am not leaving my N100 with them because MTN cannot leave their money with you.I know how much they charge me for browsing.Within a twinkle of an eye, your credit is gone.I just pray I get them, because what I will tell them will not be funny.MTN SHOULD REPENT AND IMPROVE ESPECIALLY THEIR 180.

It is really please me to be able to comment on this, pls it is not only mtn but all of them, instead of all them to improve thier equipment they busy doing promo, as if they are lottery company. At least a good product should be able to sell itself.they ll introduce a parkage by telling you to pay monthly access fee , without guarantee of of good network for the whole month. they wont even apologise to you sice thier term and condition apply .AND NCC LL NOT COMPLAIN since they are also involve.pls Government should help us out , the ripoffis too much.OR THEY SHOULD LET KNOW THE RIGHT PLACE TO TABLE ARE COMPLAINS.

Very very very nasty network. The worst av ever seen in recent times. MTN should just pack out of this country as they are already short one in the count of network providers we have in the country. MTN has failed Nigeria and indeed their parent country. They are all bunch of dupes. For the past 4 days av not been able to load. I have been forced to switch to our indigineous network GLO.

MTN needs to realise they can't keep holding customers to ransome. People will migrate if they can no longer provide basic services. They, to me, are simply a greedy network!

That man heading the NCC called Ndukwe is only good at organizing dubious town hall meetings. Nigerians must begin to vote with their money or else MTN will continue to exploit us with poor quality service while giving world class service to South Africans and else where. MTN's customer care department is one of the most irresponsible, incompetent and fraudulent of all the telecoms companies in Nigeria. The 180 and 181 call lines are never responsive to calls for support and even when you send them emails they NEVER respond. When shall we have a government in this country that will protect the interest of Nigerians both at home and abroad. Nigerians have been subjects of attacks in South Africa simply for being successful business men and women in that country. The government in Ghana recently raised the cost of business capital to $300,000 and this is targeted mainly at Nigerians. The Chinese are holding over 700 Nigerians in their jails while Chinese nationals are selling bread and cake in Nigeria and even second hand cloths and shoes in Mushin and elsewhere in the country without any one molesting them! MTN is today a global success story due to the Nigerian market, but Nigerian consumers are not getting a fair deal from the company. Pity

I thought MTN had similar problems sometimes in June. The problem is simple capacity overload. We depend more on mobile telephony and there will always be problems as more subscribers are added. To compound the issue is the poor customer services of MTN and major companies in Nigeria. All what they are after is revenue and promo. Unless Nigerians vote with their cash by not buying recharged cards for a week and for months, they will not improve. The consumers are gullible and are over-dependent on these phone services. IF THAT CALL IS NOT GOING TO BRING YOU MONEY- DONT MAKE THE CALL. YOU CAN TEXT AS WELL, THAT WAY YOUR CREDIT CAN GO LONGER.

From inception MTN has been very dishonest to its subscribers. It's service quality has remained many degrees lower than its charges and its arrogance. Both derive from the fact that rather than control, regulate and ensure standards, the NCC under its boss was always defending them under the canopy of his self glorification of the rapid improvement in Nigeria's teledensity. All who have used, are using MTN know that it has been a rape on Nigerians. Though all providesrs are guilty of sharp practices, the organisation that is squarely responsible is Mr fine boy Engr Ndukwe's NCC, as they are totally blind to these sharp practices. Of course in Nigeria when Nigerians are on the receiving end, some Nigerians in position of authority are smiling to the banks, to save the blood money that accrues to them from their indiference. Madam Rebranding should probe NCC, that house stinks.

In all fairness to NCC, I will like to give them a thumb up for their performance under Obasanjo's government. Twice I had to lodge my complaints against both celltell (as the company was known then) and 'almighty' MTN. On the two occasions, they did not only ensured that I had my money back but also forced them to call my line and apologised for their misbehaviours. I seem not to be in tune with current happenings, has there been a change in leadership of NCC? Or their hands are tied by some higher authorities?

The only network that picks your call immediately you call is Etisalat and they respond to your query in a hurry and still send you test message. Here in Warri I have still not been able to access my credit for the past two months and because of that I am not loading any recharge card. But best Network for internet connection no doubt. Their edge is better than Mtn own.

@ Smasher, that was some good advert for Etisalat. But know that Etisalat is about 5% of what MTN is so they will even call you to ask if you have any problem. Wait until they chop belleful!

The regulatory body and the government are getting some percentage in cash in every call we make, that is why NCC & EFCC can not act or prosecute MTN.Thank God that other networks are coming into the country. At least we have alternative and even more efficient networks better than MTN.Every evening one can not recharge or transfer untill late at night.I advice people to get other networks but use MTN just to receive calls.MTN is Big for Nothing.

I just called 180 and 181 and both calls didn't go through. Where is Mr Ndukwe and the guys at NCC Please get MTN to correct this mess before Nigerians start taking laws into their own hands. We are tired of paying for poor quality service from private companies. Did anybody read the MO Ibrahim report on Governance Index here are excerpts of the ranking "Under the Safety and Rule of Law category, Nigeria scored 50.6 out of 100, placing 36th out of the 53 African nations and 12th out of the 16 countries in the West African region. Under Participation and Human Rights, Nigeria scored 41.8 points, coming 33rd in Africa and 13th in West Africa, while in the area of Sustainable Economic Opportunity, the country scored 42.6 out of 100, placing 34th in Africa and 10 in West Africa. Nigeria had the highest scores and ranking under Human Development, garnering 50.8 out of 100, placing 25th in Africa and 6th in West Africa; while under 2009 IIAG; it scored 46.5 points, coming 35th in Africa and 11th in West Africa. Mauritius tops the 2009 Ibrahim Index with a total score of 82.8, ranking first in all four main categories. Cape Verde is ranked second with a total score of 78.0. Seychelles is ranked third with a total score of 77.1, followed by Botswana with a total score of 73.6. South Africa is ranked fifth with a total score of 69.4." Now Nigeria is ranked very low because of companies like MTN's sharp practices. What they will not do in South Africa is what they are doing in Nigeria. I am leading a mass movement to start picketing some of these dubious and fraudulent companies any joiners.

At least you can now see the reason why people carry more than one phoneline, corruption has jinxed us as a nation because the people i.e our law makers and other regulatory bodies who are suppose to call them to order have all been compromised nairawise. GOD HELP US NIGERIANS

MTN Nigeria has to be the worst company here. I stay in SA but have been here in Lagos for the past 6 months. Their network is poor, too many dropped calls etc. Customer service is a joke to say the least. Infact I dont even think they have one as I have never seen anyone get through to them. MTN SA is like another company. Customer service is first class. Here because MTN know that Nigerians will just put up with it they dont care. So if you all want to do something about stand up and be counted and not just sit there and talk hot air. Move to another company and hit MTN hard.

First of all, I'd like to express my vote of no confidence with MTN. There are lots of issues that they are complacent about. Namely - 1. No customer care 2. Dead voice mail. Reason: they know customers leaving their network to another would want to leave a message with their phone numbers redirecting their friends to the new number. 3. Very High tariff 4. No consumer benefit. All they do is to collect a million naira from subscribers and give twenty kobo to one person. It's a south african company, we know them for their extortion - ask DSTV and netcoms. They are rip offs. These are the ones I can remember for now. There are more and more coming up daily. They hide under the guise of poor power which is no excuse for extortion. NCC has not helped matters at all. Ndukwe should step down for a younger person to make things work.

I'm trying to upload my balance for 4 days now...still not working. Any idea what this is doing to my business? Can't make calls for the last 4 days! MTN sucks!

It's a new year and new beginnings and MTN still renders the same old sucky service!
