Globacom denies owing billions of naira to distributors

Nigeria’s 2nd telecommunications carrier, Globacom, has denied that it is owing its distributors billions of naira and treating them unfairly. Bode Opeseitan was speaking in response to questions by NEXT following a demonstration on Wednesday in front of the company’s headquarters by members of the Association of Telecom Distributors of Nigeria.

Ayo Ojo, the president of the association, who led the protest had alleged in an interview with NEXT that, Globacom has ‘‘ cheated us of billions of money, that is why we are here.

Video: Altdon protest at Globacom Headquarters

“We were told to sell up to two million worth of recharge every month. We pay in the money to Globacom’s account before we collect the cards,” Mr. Ojo said, adding that the protest is the only way members of the association could draw the attention of the firm to their plight.

Reasons for protest

Mr. Ojo, said, “The issue is that most of the pins in the recharge cards do not work and we have paid for them. The consumer returns it to us, when Globacom is contacted to change the cards or refund their money, we are told to come back today, come back tomorrow.”

According to him, this was not the practice with other service providers. “Other providers when their cards are spoilt, we inform them and they block the cards but Glo never blocks their cards when we inform them. Rather than listen to us constructively, they have turned deaf ears to us and are doing whatever they like. We have invested our resources and we want it back,” he said.

The association also accused Globacom of breaching an agreement it earlier reached with the dealers, by sidelining the association and dealing with other private individuals related to Mike Adenuga, the chairman of the firm.

Another dealer, who simply identified himself as Mr. Isaac, said, “We are dealers with Globacom set up. The agreement in the relationship was that we were told to go and get shops and we start buying from them. The problem now is that Globacom has sacked all the dealers and owes us huge sum of money.

“Glo would sell to us at a high price and will sell at a lower price to their relations and they will direct others to go and buy from them.”

According to the dealers, the problem with Globacom started when the telecoms firm unilaterally terminated the agreements reached four months earlier with them, for which they were given appointment letters in 2003, and were told to set up Glo shops around the country. The paints used in painting the shops were sold to them by Globacom.

Globacom’s Response

But Mr. Opeseitan, insists, the company only has individual and not collective agreements with the dealers.

He said, “In the letter of agreement reached with each of them, non-performing dealers will be de-listed. No agreement was reached with ATDON but individually, and letters of appointment, obligation and a minimum level was set for the dealers.”

Mr. Opeseitan explained that Globacom has been fair to the dealers, based on their performances, adding that a price monitoring team scrutinises the operations of the dealers; if any is found to have flouted the ethics, (that person) will first be suspended and thereafter, de-listed.

The initial agreement was that each dealer had a monthly target of N20 million which they had failed to meet.

According to him, “The minimum level is N20 million since 2003 and none of the dealers have met this. Glo has been magnanimous with the dealers. They are not meeting the targets since 2003.

“The bad card allegation is not correct, as serial numbers requited is to be reported to police and pin numbers used cannot be blocked,” he said.

Having made their grievances known, the protesters dispersed voluntarily under the watchful eyes of Globacom’s security men.

I did my NYSC in Onitsha in 2004/2005 and worked with a telecom dealer. Glo's marketers antics (in order to meet their sales target)as regards selling to dealers and then individual retailers at the same price as registered dealers cost my outfit a hell of a loss. The reaction was long expected

Is it compulsory that a company must continue to do business with you if you are not performing? I do not think that Globacom is the kind of charity that these dealers want it to be. Every company is free to choose and delist its dealers if its indices warrant. Can these noise makers keep quiet? When they were raking billions from Glo and others, did they cry foul? I understand other operators had done the same before now. They thought Glo would never do same.Pity!

Glo (and its chairman) has a reputation of severe payment delays and in some cases not paying at all. This involves dealers as well as content providers and suppliers. As a result content providers like us with unique service offerings do not deal with them. This has to stop. Business models where its run on the whim of one man should not exist especially a megalomaniac.

Even if there is a disagreement between Glo and their dealers, is this ridiculous action necessary? There are other better ways to resolve disagreement, the step these people have chosen to take against Glo is absolutely not effective, it would only further complicate the conflict between all parties. Glo happens to be a Nigerian company, I think all parties involved should embrace their responsibilities and respect one another. We are all Nigerians, whether we like it or not, Glo still represents us directly and indirectly. Therefore, we should exercise self control and discover a better strategy to resolve contract conflict effectively. I still support and very proud of Glo.

One can see Ayo's choice of words as that of a man who could not eat from Globacom's pie. I sympathise with him for writing about what he heard -- dem say --! Pity his choice of word! We are brought up never to use the kind of words he is using for an obviously elderly man.

i don't think d tactic d dealers employed was in d best interest of both parties.a thorough dialogue tru delegates would av sufficed.

The problem with Nigerians is that we are not critical about the right things. If an entity sets distributors a monthly target of N20 million since 2003 and none of the dealers have been consistently able to met this target, common sense alone dictates that the target is unrealistic and should be revised accordingly. Otherwise, it demotivates and damages business interests in the long-term. Unless, of course, the entity is intent on running an indentured distribution sweatshop. @ Sherriff: Young or old, a megalomaniac is a megalomaniac and it should be said. Irreverence is what makes things sizzle. We will never move forward as long as kissing the arse of an errant elder is the preferred norm.

IF GLOBACOM IS SURE OF ITS FACTS LET THEM COME TO AN OPEN ARENA SO WE CAN SHOW DOCUMENTS AND PRESENT HARD FACTS WHICH REVEAL GLOBACOM'S CROKEDNESS IN BUSINESS DEALINGS WITH HER DEALERS. WHAT IS NO LONGER NEWS IS THAT MANY NIGERIANS SHARE SAME/SIMILAR EXPERIENCES WITH MEMBERS OF ALTDON. IS IT NOT TRUE THAT GLOBACOM SOLD GOODS TO HER DEALERS ON A FRIDAY AT A PRICE OF (SAY) N100.00 AND ON THE FOLLOWING MONDAY OFFERED THE SAME GOODS FOR N10.00 TO THE DEALERS. BY WHICH TIME THE 'IN HOUSE DEALERS' CAME TO CLEAR THE GOODS AT N10.00 TO SELL INTO SAME MARKET AS THOSE WHO BOUGHT AT N100.00. IF THIS IS NOT A PREMEDITATED ROBBERY, WORSE THAN ARMED ROBBERY, WHAT ELSE CAN THAT BE? IN COMMON PALANCE GLOBACOM 419ED HER DEALERS. I REQUEST FOR A MEETING WHERE A NEUTRAL BODY OF JUDGES WILL EXAMINE ALL FACTS FROM BOTH GLOBACOM AND THE DEALERS (AND OTHER MANY AGGRIEVED PARTIES) I MAY NOT BLAME THE MAN CALLED MR. OPESEITAN, AS HE MAY BE NEW TO GLOBACOM, AS WORKERS ARE TURNED OUT SO RAPIDILY THAT HE MAY BE ONE OF THE NEWLY RECRUITED HACHET MEN OF GLOBACOM. OTHER NETWORKS HAVE KEPT STAFF FOR YEARS BUT IN THE GLOBACOM'S ENCLAVE, THEY GET TURNED OUT AS FREQUENTLY AS THE CAMELEON CHANGES ITS COLOUR. ASSOCIATIONS ARE FORMED FOR COMMON GOOD. ALTDON IS A LEGAL ENTITY AND REGISTERED UNDER THE NIGERIAN LAW WHICH PERMITS FREEDOM OF ASSOCIATION. WHY DOES GLOBACOM A MEMBER OF ATCON, EVEN THOUGH THE GRANTING OF OPERATING LICENCE BY FGN, WAS FOR INDIVIDUAL COMPANY? I AM A PROUD NIGERIAN GIVEN TO SUPPORT HONEST AND DECENT NIGERIAN ENTERPRISES, BUT I WILL USE WHAT I HAVE TO FIGHT ANY ORGANISATION, LIKE GLOBACOM, THAT DECIDES TO DO BUSINESS BY EMPLOYING EVERY DUBIOUS AND CROOKED MEANS, MOSTLY CLINDENSTINE. CAN YOU ASK THEM WHY IT TOOK GLOBACOM SO MUCH TIME, SWEAT AND WAITING TO ROLL OUT IN GHANA? THERE, UNLIKE NIGERIA, THEY STICK TO STRICT OBSERVANCE OF BUSINESS ETHICS/PRINCIPLES, NOT HERE WHERE IT IS ANYTHING GOES, BECAUSE REGULATING BODIES LIKE NCC ARE COMPROMISED UMPIRES. SAY IT OUT SO THAT NIGERIA CAN MOVE TO ITS GLORIOUS PLACE, A NATION FOUNDED AND SUPPORTED BY FRAUD, CAN NEVER MAKE A BREAK THROUGH. THE TSUNAMI AFFECTING THE BANKS ARE THE HANDIWORK OF A FEW GREEDY MEN/WOMEN BUT WE ARE ALL NOW DRAGGED TO DRINK FROM THE CUP OF POISON, BREWED BY THESE PEOPLE OF POWER WITH STINKING RICHES. I PREDICT THAT ALL CASTLES BUILT ON FAULTY FOUNDATION, NO MATTER HOW BIG, MUST CRASH DOWN. I EAGERLY AWAIT THE CBN REPORTS ON THE REMAINING BANKS, I AM INTERESTED IN HOW EQUITORIAL TRUST BANK (ETB), WILL FAIR.LONG LIVE NIGERIA.

Fair is fair, dealers and Globacom should be self supporting for common good of both parties. Questions: 1. Were these two parties meeting regularly to sort out issues and unclogg every obstacle? Or was it a master-servant relationship? 2. Why were dealers appointed if the appointing authority will not ensure transparency? 3. Who set the standards and conditions for the relationship? Was it an imposition or was it an agreement both parties discussed and accepted? 4. If ALTDON came out to demonstrate, is it not a pointer to the fact that Globacom was either evading or being intrasigent? 5. What role(s) did the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) play? 6. Is it against the law for either party to seek the NCC's intervention as both were presumably licensed by the regulator? 7. I pity the Dealers if it is true that they were sumarily dropped when they must have invested huge sums of money for their specialised set up. However for a dealer to meet a target depends more on the products' quality and marketing strategies. Is Globacom sure that its products were sellable in the face of competition? 8. In Nigeria is a target of N20 million per month reasonable? Does this take into consideration the practicability of such an artificial target imposition? Will a Dealer in Sango-Otta compare favourably with one in Abuja or Onitsha? Can they be expected to perform to same standard? 9. I have been a victim in which I tried to charge my number via a card that kept recording error message. The dealer could not help as I bought an intact card scratched by me in their premises. I was also instructed another time to return the card to where I purchased it. Who bears the fault? The agent/seller or the manufacturer of the product? 10. For all concerned it is time for Nigeria to do business decently by protecting the consumer. I suggest and appeal to Globacom to play the role of a head of family who must maintain discipline through love and respect for all members of the family. Does Globacom not know that it owes it a duty to ensure the prosperity and good business development of her dealers? Does changing of dealers help their corporate image? They should see their relationship as that of a Siamese twins, as the life of one depends on and must support the other's. Common sense must be allowed to prevail, otherwise neither will be prosperous nor know peace. The looser is Globacom as its public image may be irretriveably damaged. New dealers may be circumspect and try to read in between lines. If your business is so good, why have the earlier dealers closed shops? Words of Wisdom?

No wonder our country isnt moving foward! ''Educated'' people depend on rumour and hate facts like shit. Can u check what happened to those staff rationalised by Zain? Glo has absorbed many of them on fatter pay. Is it a crime for a company not to run like father Xmas? What value can some of the noisemakers claim to have added to their street, not to talk of town, state, country of Africa? Yet we are masters of pulling down anyone who is solving problems. Methinks if dealers cant meet the obligation of any business, it is not a cast-iron relationship. Any of the parties can dissolve the marriage. On a lighter note, if I cant satisfy Frank Edoho, I can opt to walk away! god bless those of us who have eyes but see nothing good in others. Amen.

I think the issue at stake is that of transparency and integrity. I think Sherrif and Bobby should stop defending Glo even if they are Glo staff. There is an agrieved party here and they have said that prior platforms and attempts yielded no meaningful response from Glo. I do believe that giving 'HARD FACTS' available against Glo, it does seem that this organization is not ashamed of treating its business partners shabilly. I therefore think that the action taken by this group of people was as a last resort and is very legitimate. We cannot continue to condone acts of draconian emasculation all in the name of capitalism. Nigeria is not asking for 'Father Christmas', we just need good corporate governance, i think its high time a sanitation of other business sectors(similar to what is happening in the banking sector)is undertaken to check all these issues of gross exploitation and sharp practices

Posted by Rabiu Aisha on Oct 02 2009

Nigerians are funny as they take side in an issue without deep and incisive analysis. As there is no smoke without fire, it may not be charitable to toe the line of Swagger. If a dispute has arisen between two partners, especially when there has existed a relationship the best for both parties is to try to settle amicably especially for the sake of their interests. I suggest that both parties should mend fences as that will do them a world of good. Here in my part of the country I have seen a lot of wahala between such parties. Globacom must refrain from throwing stones as those in glass houses know better. Enough of grand standing like Swagger. Naming edifices after some money bags in Nigeria, is like celebrating some of the frivolous awards which have no worth while basis. Titles are bought in Nigeria rather than earned. We have seen a number of people with doubtful sources of wealth being decorated even with National honors. Let everybody earn his/her legitimate income, through fair means.

I heard that Mike Adenuga Towers on Adeola Odeku was sealed off early this year by Lagos State Government, wait a minute, for TAX EVASION. That is indeed a dark shade in Globacom's white garment. Grapevine also has it that even the legal team that negotited its soft landing with Lagos State government has not been paid its fees! Add to this, is the fact that I know a man in Ikeja who has been denied his over due rental for hosting Globacom transmiter tower on his property!! Are all these a fabrication or na 'bad belle'? Globacom please cover your face in shame. When such stories begin to make the rounds, then not even the deaf can refuse to pay attenion. Globacom tower may indeed be resting on tissue of lies. EFCC please take note before more Nigerians are hurt. They should bury their heads in shame.

Ha ha ha. Monkey de work baboon dey chop. I beg make una no believe Globacom o. My little brother worked there but had to 'eject' from the Globacom sinking aircraft. Till date friends he left behind have tales of woes and regrets to tell, while congratulating the decision of their friend for bailing out. Now they are trapped and subjected to horrible conditions worse than 'boyboy'. Adenuga is a very bad example of the so called business gurus. All the stories coming out of the Globacom house are stinking. The dealers are very correct for the action taken, as many Nigerians always look aside when evil grows to become a monster. Adenuga change and let the spirit of God wash you of your sins.

My brother in Abuja lost so much money to robbers and bad products as a glo dealer. Make God purnish all rich people who dey with style steal money from poor people like dealers. I support una o. If Mr Opeseitan is sure of his facts, I want him to agree to what Ayo asked for, that is face to face with neutral judges. Since they have so much money they give out through promos. they can buy airtime like Channel's Sunrise Programme for a live presentation of their cases to the public. I am looking up to that day when it will happen. Can Mr Opeseitan Please do that for Nigerians? If not he should shut up and continue to be messenger to Adenuga.

Did someone say he taught Glo will never terminate the contract, even when they consistently fail to meet set targets? Now, why did it take Glo so long to take that decision? Answer: Glo needed them then. They needed their financial mucsles. Now the tide has changed and Glo wants to do away with them. If Glo is saying thats not the case, then then should accept the challenge of open comparism of facts and figures. I think its a 'use and discard' senerio. I also feel that Adenuga will have more on his mind, especially after his removal from ETB.

Without any judgement call, is it not a universal practice that the rich deny the poor even the little crumbs that fall off the table. Is that not why billions live at the bottom of the pyramid while a few control the vast resources of the earth. Read the book, "Voices of the poor: crying out for change" by Deepa Narayan et al and make up your mind about the way of the world.

I think Mike Adenuga should not have allowed this to get to this level. Organisations that stand the test of time, are listening and proactive. Building an organisation around a single individual is very dangerous. Mike Adenuga should go and understudy familys and business empires that have stood the test of time. Guiness just finished celebrating their 250 years of existence. The Globacom experience was a good one for Nigeria and Africa, but they should setup enduring structures that will see it live beyond Mike and his grand children. The man carring the vision of RCCG was not there when it was started. A man is a great man only when he keeps his obligations. We shoud develop the culture of keeping our covenants and agreements. This is the bane of developing in Nigeria and black race. The dignity of man rests on his ability to keep to the living principles and ideals that he represents, which has "keeping Agreements" as the bedrock. Before a football match, the rules are set, so the beauty of football is because the rules are kept through the span of the match, changing the rules midway kills the spirit of sportmanship and enterpreneuship. Mike please listen to this men who have helped you to make your network widely acceptable. Dialogue with them and keep all agreed covenants you have with them. So do not fail over a million young enterprenuers who see you as role model, for that is one legacy that will last in the minds of men beyond the beautiful plazas dotting the Island of Lagos and Victoria. I hope you will listening to the of voice of reason, as nations and business rise and fall, for no single man knows it all.

Glo is still part of what is making the image of our country more attractive today. We have a good percentage of Nigerians that are able to put food on the table only because of Glo. Moreover, communication all around the country today is much more easier compare to those dark days.....Hence, do not let us get things twisted, whether you like it or not Glo still represents a priceless gift to our country. Again, I'm confident that if all parties are willing to embrace their responsibilities, things will be much more better for all. We must also keep in mind that Glo is not a father xmas, but an organization that does business to make profit. The dealers should understand their roles, understand their contractual obligations and implement a better strategy to deal with contract conflict that may occur at anytime. There are still tons of Nigerians today that are wishing/hoping to have the opportunity to work with Glo as employees or as dealers. Do not bite the finger that feeds you. I'm proud of Glo and respect the position of the dealers.....For the sake of our great nation I hope all parties find a way to work things out effectively.

I think Bobby got it all wrong and he is being untruthful. I don't think it is right to cheat others just because you offer employment to some people. Glo in giving service is also denying others their legitimate dues for work done. They are not asking Glo to give them bonus, but that due diligence should be employed. If Glo truely believes it has nothing to hide, let them accept the challenge of an open examination of the two sides' claims, as suggested by Ayo (02/10/2009) What is Glo's response to the damning revelation made by Kemi Koncern (Oct 03 and repeated 04,Oct. Isn't this a clear case of deception and criminal indulgence in day light robbery practices? In other sane climes the police ought to have set in immediately to probe this case of grand deception which is similar to yahooyahoo crime.

@kate: I may not know much about this latest development, but one thing is for sure, Glo is still one of the best organizations put together by a Nigerian. Hence, we can not allow few negative bruits surrounding Glo's relationship with their dealers to tarnish all the incredible accomplishments of this organization. As we all know, one has to be a superman to effectively operate a successful business in Nigeria; this is why it is very important for all to address this situation broadly.I hope all parties involved discover a common ground that will allow them to work together again as.... one.

Posted by Bobby on Oct 16 2009

@kemi Koncern: Instead of wasting our time with all these story lines, why don't you just begin with the revelation of Glo's shenanigans? I'm sure that the whole world wants to know.

Posted by Bobby on Oct 16 2009

Not to defend Glo, because I completely respect and clearly understand the position of the dealers; but I take my hat off to any Nigerian businessman that is willing to vigorously invest in Nigeria (a country where almost nothing seems to be working). Instead of going out of our way to quickly castigate or bash our own, I think it would be more fruitful to embrace Nigerian companies more than ever; and also work together as one in fixing things that aren't working correctly. We must not forget that treating each other with respect and dignity is everyone's responsibility.....Therefore, I hope all parties find a suitable strategy to iron out their differences and continue to work together hand in hand to make efforts for the bright future of this nation.
