Lulu explains Amodu sack

Print print Email email Share Share

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Sani Lulu Abdullahi on Monday morning shed light on why the Super Eagles coach Shuaibu Amodu was sacked and the reason the Federation has decided to go for an expatriate Technical Adviser for the national football team.

At a breakfast meeting with the President of African Business Round-table, Bamanga Tukur in Abuja, Lulu insisted that the Federation was sensitive to the demands of passionate Nigerians, both highly -placed and not -so-highly placed, for a Technical Adviser who will drive the team to play professionally and with discipline as the FIFA World Cup finals approach.

Lulu Abdullahi and some members of the NFF Management were visiting Bamanga Tukur, one -time civilian Governor of old Gongola State and a former presidential aspirant to show appreciation for the “Africa Star Excellence Award In Football Administration’ conferred on the NFF President by African Leadership magazine.

The magazine said that in arriving at this decision, their consultants took cognizance of “your strategic focus on performance of FIFA U-17 World Championship which was hosted successfully and Nigeria won silver while Nigeria senior team qualified for the Mundial (World Cup) against all odds”. The award will be presented at a ceremony in Paris, France between February 19-22.

World Cup

Speaking further, Lulu Abdullahi said the NFF is determined to see the Super Eagles perform creditably at the first -ever World Cup finals to be staged on African soil, noting that “football is one of the instruments that nations now use to position themselves in the international sphere”.

Responding, Tukur acknowledged the power of football, saying that three things, namely sports, trade and tourism are the issues that unite any nation.

“Everytime there is a football match, whether in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Johannesburg or Douala, you feel it in the air. The cheapest and most effective way of showcasing a country these days is football.

“I urge you to forge ahead with the same confidence, character and courage. My belief is that wherever there’s a challenge, there’s always an opportunity. It is the opportunity that you should always look for to lead Nigeria football to the top.”

No grudges over snub

Meanwhile Coach of the Mozambican national team Mart Nooij insists he bears no grudges with the Nigeria Football Federation regarding his omission from the list of coaches shortlisted for the Super Eagles coaching job even though he is a bit disappointed that he only got to learn of the development from sources outside of the NFF.

The Dutchman was linked with the Nigerian job towards the tail end of the World Cup qualifiers and was fancied to replace Shaibu Amodu and lead the Super Eagles to the World Cup in June. According to Nooij, there had always been an open line of communication between him and the NFF thus his disappointment at the NFF’s decision not to relay news of his exclusion from the coaches’ shortlist through to him.

From the grapevine

Speaking from South Africa where he insists he is on holidays, Nooij said “I have been speaking with them for some time now but they didn’t tell me anything about the list. I heard about it from a couple of my friends here but I am not disappointed I didn’t get the job. Maybe I’m a bit disappointed that I only got to hear about it from people in South Africa but I have an offer waiting for me in Mozambique. The (Mozambican) FA still wants me and I will hold discussions with them when I return,” he added.

Favourites

Amongst the six coaches shortlisted for the Super Eagles job are two Dutchmen - Guus Hiddink and Louis van Gaal - but Nooij can’t envision his compatriots leaving their current employers for the Nigerian job.

“Guus Hiddink is with Russia and Louis van Gaal I believe is happy at Bayern Munich so I can’t imagine any of them coming to work in Africa even if it’s for the World Cup,” continued Nooij who feels former Senegal coach Bruno Metsu will be firm favourite to grab the job of leading the Super Eagles to South Africa 2010.

“He (Metsu) has worked in Africa and knows how to do business here. He has also been to the World Cup so, maybe, that will give him an advantage over the others,” added Nooij.

metsu knows 'how to do business here'...the truth would come out one day...cheap hustlers...

Why sack Amodu? He reached semifinal of Nations cup which some white foreign coaches did not attain. Why do we have this inferiority complex. Nigerian coaches arefar better. It is all hype. forweign managers can't perform magic. Stop this move please

Can B.METSU make better selsction of players within the shortest possible time for the w/cup. Why not Siasia and Keshi? who are all ready in the know of our players

Posted by Spymaster on Feb 09 2010

Siasia and keshi should be given the task to lead us to the world cup. I had a vision that we will win the world cup if these two are selected.

Posted by Omo Alhaja on Feb 09 2010

Indeed, CountryMan, indeed. Note the Dutchman's gratuitous (but well- deserved) insult. I am glad, however, that neither Keshi nor Siasia were shortlisted...precisely because they would never do business as usual with those cheap hustlers in the NFF.

NFF will never learn, this is what they did in 2002 that we went and embarrased ourselves. Amodu has no self-respect, once again he has made himself a fall guy for NFF(NFA), his technical (in)competence notwithstanding.

Posted by mayor on Feb 09 2010

why sack Amodu? i believe he can do better. NFF are not serious they are the one to be sack or change, let people who can do it better be there......

Posted by muktari on Feb 09 2010

let's change NFF and put better people there, leave Amodu he can still perform.

Posted by peter on Feb 09 2010

Amodu and Siasia can do the job, lets get homebase player with some of the better players we have and change the NFF to get the better result.

Which of these coaches qualified their team for the World Cup? Strenghten Amodu with Keshi & Siasia & u have a great technical crew!

Posted by Gboye on Feb 09 2010

It is said that doing the same thing and expecting a different result is one of the definition of insanity, nothing has changed in the glass house. This is february and we are still shortlisting names of coaches. The truth is "a great coach plus talented players but poor administration would mostlikely lead to a poor or average result!"

Posted by ernest on Feb 09 2010

why sacking Amodu? the best way to doing it is to higher a foreign couch and let him work with Amodu so that Amodu can gain the experience from couch and continue with eagle after the world cup. what if foreign couch did not perform well? what would happen to him? fire him, if we continue to fire couch Nigeria football would go down completely.

NFF MEMBERS ARE THE CURSE OF OUR PROBLEMS, UNTIL THEY STOP COLLECTING BRIBE SO OUR TEAM (SUPER EAGLE) CAN NOW JACK BACK TO LIFE AND AMODU SHOULD BE SACKED BECAUSE WE NEED A FIDELITY COACH THAT IS FULL OF ACTION THAT THOSE PLAYERS CAN GIVE RESPECT WITHOUT COLLECTING BRIBE, LIKE AN AMODU. AND PLEASE LET US TRY SAMSON SIASIA.

THANKS FOR THIS FORUM. YOU KNOW; WITHOUT SENTIMENT. WE HAVE TO START FROM THE NFF. AND CLEAN THE CLIQUE OR THRASH BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL CIVIL SERVANTS WHO KNOW NOTHING ABOUT FOOTBALL. ANOTHER IS THAT, SINCERELY A FOREIGN MANAGER MAY NOT GIVE ROOM FOR LOBBYING UNLIKE OUR HOME MANAGERS. EVEN MOST OF THE PLAYERS STILL PLAYING TODAY WERE DISCOVERED BY THE THEN FOREIGN MANAGERS LIKE WESTERHOF...... SO WE KNOW WHAT TO DO BUT WE ARE NOT HONEST TO OURSELF.WE NEED A SELF STARTER FOREIGN MANAGER!!!!!!!!!!..THANKS

Posted by Gabriel on Feb 09 2010

Shehata, if we have to get a foreign coach. Siasia, it is to be Nigerian.

Posted by Bayo on Feb 09 2010

Bruno Metsu?! What has he done or acheived in the last 8 years? Why don't the NFF focus on the long term success of the Eagles rather than the usual sgort termism that continues to aflict our nation? Identify those current coaches that have the ability (though maybe lacking experience) and groom them for the future. Siasia and Keshi come to mind. Siasia took us to the Olympic finals and yet the NFF really beleives that Metsu (a has-been who never was) has the necessary skill and expertise to take us through to the WC? Frankly idiotic. Van Gaal and Hiddink do have the necessary ability, technical and tactical nous and (most importantly) the disciplne to whip the eagles into a formidable force but not in a million years will they give up their current roles to lead the Eagles. Siasia and Keshi are the natural successor. Lets stop being short-sighted and really plan for the future.

PLIZ, IT ALRIGHT BUT NOT OK.... IT WILL BE A MISTAKE TO PICK SHAHATA OF EGYPT SIMPLY BECAUSE HE HAS WON SEVERAL NATIONS CUP. THAT IS NOT IT. SHAHATA IS TRYING TO MAKE UP HIS CV BY TAKING NIGERIA TO THE WORLD CUP. Guus Hiddink IS BETTER!

Posted by AL-PHA on Feb 09 2010

ON THE OTHER WAY ROUND, NOBODY TALKS ABOUT THE PLAYERS. THE PLAYERS THAT WE ARE HAVING IN THIS NOW ARE OVER-AGED. SOME CAN'T STAND A STANDARD 90MINUTES OF PLAY. NOW ALL CONCERN ARE RELAXING. WHEN JUNIOR OR SENIOR COMPETITION IS 2 WEEKS AWAY, THEY START LOOKING FOR THOSE PLAYERS WHO CAN GIVE BRIBES TO PLAY NONSENSE. WE HAVE ACADEMIES EVERY WHERE, THE FOREIGN CLUBS ARE PICKING PLAYERS FROM OUR ACADEMY BUT WE ARE NOT. THAT IS WHY, WHEN WE INVITE THEM BACK FROM THE FOREIGN LAND, SOME WOULD START ACTING LIKE A SMALL GOD. PLAYERS ARE ALSO ISSUES!

No one knows the fact that we are "perpetual progressive in lying" than we do. Let the lying spray continue; let ignorance have a melodrama with deceit!! Perhaps one day we'd cry blood? We never seem to learn from mistakes,(ours& other peoples). Not from football, nor from the Civil-war... imagine the rif-raf Abdul Murktar, @ best a case of a goat in a head-boot clash with an Elephant. Weep not for Nigeria.. when we're ready, there'll be a whisper in the wind. Compliments.

We demand for a foreign coach not because of complex as one writer puts it, but rather to subdue tribal sentiments and very distorting influence of our European based profis who in the past bought their position in the Eagles lineup. We demand for a coach that could base his selections on merit and not on quota system since football is no ministerial appointments. It hightime we draw a line between these two

Posted by gin daniel kwoi on Feb 09 2010

Our nigeria couches are goog, but fortechnical play and disciple, let employ foreign couch.

Posted by obinna Nwachukwu on Feb 09 2010

oh yea, amodu is clumsy, tactically and lacks a firm grip on the team, but he has fulfilled all his aims with the nff, if shehata was so miraculous, why couldnt he qualify Eqypt for the world cup, neither could guus hiddink do same for russia. Neither has any foreign coach led any country of his assignment to win the world cup. fifa even encourages countries to use indigenous coaches. Therefore, a cocktail of Sunday oliseh, samson siasia, and amodu is still ok. As long as the head coach is not amodu. Why not!

Posted by Gbemiga O on Feb 09 2010

See the problem with this country ! Reading through the comments , it is a surprise. Before Amodu was sacked , you could barely read any comments that wants him to remain. Alas, people are now wondering why we want a foreign coach ! Nigerians , I hail thee. Amodu is poor. No doubt ! Our problem going forward is going to be picking a good coach because the NFF people are ready to pick a useless foreigner as long as they gain materially , even if it is for a short term. Selfish people !!!

Posted by Joshua Nwaekeala on Feb 10 2010

I strongly believe dat the dan nigeria problem is from the player not even from the couch. While the whole thing is,we are just texting dis to console ourself because the did has been done. So less release and watch their plane

Posted by Guru Maharaj ji Devotees on Feb 11 2010

pick a Nigerian Coach (Not Amodu) and Super Eagles will win the World Cup, divine Injunction.

Posted by uche 210 on Feb 16 2010

NFA IS OUR PROBLEM THE KNOW AMODU IS NOT GOOD FOR THE JOB FROM THE FRIST DAY BUT BECAUSE OF BRIBE. NOW THE WANT FORI. COUCH JUST FOR USD 'LET THEM GO FOR SIASIA AND KESHI
