International minorities group seeks cleaning of Ogoni land

Aninternational organization for minorities, the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO) has counseled the new oil operator likely to take over the operations of Anglo/Dutch oil giant, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), in Ogoniland to adequately dialogue with the people of the area before they commence operations.

The group is also insisting that Shell be made to conduct a proper clean up of the land in the area before leaving. The organisation’s Programme Coordinator, Maggie Murphy, who met with reporters in Port Harcourt at the weekend, said SPDC had undermined its position in the area by not living up to internationally acceptable standards.

Shell was forced to suspend its operations in Ogoniland in 1993, following a communal uprising which eventually led to death of the late environmental rights activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa, on November 10, 1995 by the regime of late Sani Abacha.

The Ogoni people, under their umbrella of the Movement for the Support of Ogoni People (MOSOP), have insisted that they would not welcome the return of Shell to their land and are, in addition, demanding a thorough clean up of the highly polluted lands.

The federal government recently invited the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), to take up the task of cleaning up the area. It started with an on-going assessment and consultation with the Ogoni for the clean-up of 350 impacted sites in four Ogoni local government areas of Khana, Tai, Gokana and Eleme. Ms Murphy, who came to Nigeria from Netherlands last week and moved round Ogoniland to assess the situation, predicted a promising future for the people.

Mr Saro-wiwa was a Vice Chairman of UNPO, before his death while the current MOSOP President, Ledum Mitee, is the organisation’s president-elect.

Enthusiasm of youths

“Ogoni people are the only members of the organisation in Nigeria,” Ms Murphy said. “We acknowledge the enthusiasm of youths of the area to better their lives and this must be encouraged. MOSOP should be consulted and be made an integral part of the processes, to ensure peace in Ogoniland and other parts of the Niger Delta.

“MOSOP wants another oil company, which should be open in dialoguing with the people. Engaging the people is very important. The local, state and federal governments must be committed to developing the Niger Delta. People of the communities must also be part of the processes,”Murphy said.

Mr Mitee said the tremendous success made by MOSOP in garnering international exposure was made possible through its partnership with UNPO.

SHELL MUST LEAVE NIGER DELTA FOR KATSINA STATE WHERE THE DEAD PRESIDENT'S GHOST IS ROAMING THE STREET WITH TURAI. WE DO NOT NEED SHELL IN THE NIGER DELTA. OR THEY WILL SEE WHAT THEY DO NOT BARGAIN FOR. SHELL IS AGENT OF EXPLOITATION AND MARGINALIZATION. NOBODY IN NIGERIA KNOWS WHO MUCH BARREL OF OIL IS TAKING DAILY FROM OUR SOIL. THEY CONNIVE WITH NNPC TO CHEAT NIGERIANS. WHATEVER INFORMATION THEY GIVE TO NIGERIANS IS FAKE. ONLY THE CABALS IN THE NORTH KNOW EXACTLY THE SITUATION IN THE OIL COMPANIES. THEY HAVE OPPORTUNITY NOE TO SAVE IN FOREIGN BANKS WHATEVER THEY HAVE STOLEN FROM US SINCE INDEPENDENCE. SOONER THAN IMAGINED THE CHICKEN SHALL COME TO ROAST.

SHELL OR NIGERIA HAS NO BUSINESS IN OGONI LAND. IT IS TRESPASS, ENCROACHMENT AND CRIMINAL STEALING THAT WILL NOT LAST. I THINK WE ARE EDUCATED ENOUGH TO KNOW THE COST OF CRUDE PER BARREL. WE KNOW HOW MUCH 3 MILLION BARRELS PER DAY MEAN. WHERE ARE GOOD ROADS, CLEAN WATER, HOSPITALS, SCHOOLS AND JOBS FOR OUR PEOPLE. WHERE IS FARM LAND AND WATER FOR FISHING. EVERYTHING IS POLLUTED YET NO COMPENSATION. EVERYTHING IS IN ABUJA, KADUNA AND KATISINA. YET EVERY NORTHERNER DO NOT WANT IJAW OR OGONI MAN TO LEAD NIGERIANS. OUR ROLE IS TO PROVIDE OUR OIL WEALTH MONEY FOR THEM TO STEAL, NOT TO RULE. GOD'S JUDGMENT HAS BEGUN. JEHOVAH WILL SPEAK FOR US. AT LAST WE SHALL ALL SEE THE WINNER. JTF TERRORISTS AND ALL MILITARY FORMATIONS MUST LEAVE OUR NATION FOR THE SAKE OF PEACE. THEY MUST LEARN TO SWIM BECAUSE VERY SOON IT WILL BE FIRE FOR FIRE. THERE WILL BE NO HIDING PLACE.

UNPO has lost integrity to speak for Ogoni. UNPO has no relationship with the current leadership of MOSOP under Hon. Goodluck Diigbo elected in a protracted election of April10 - 15 of 2009 and sworn-in on April 26, 2009. UNPO has maintained an underground relationship with Ledum Mitee who was clinged to office for 14 years and stole millions of dollars for which he was recently arrested and now under continued investion by Nigeria's corruption czar - Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. UNPO has proven to be democratically corrupt and would soon face the wrath of the Ogoni poeople.
