The six-man panel investigating allegations of financial recklessness against the governor of Lagos, Babatunde Fashola, was constituted to uphold the integrity of the legislature and the state, a lawmaker has said.
Adelabu Onibiyo, representing Alimosho 1 Constituency, made the clarification in an interview on Saturday in Lagos.
The legislature had, on February 4, inaugurated a panel to investigate Mr. Fashola’s administration.
Mr. Onibiyo said the inauguration of the panel was part of crisis management mechanism of the Assembly.
He appealed to those protesting against the action of the legislators to calm down ``as we are merely carrying out our constitutional function’’.
Mr. Onibiyo explained that during the regime of the former governor, Bola Tinubu, when issues arose, the legislature always took steps to resolve them before they degenerated.
``It is erroneous for people to believe that there were no issues between us. A lot of things happened during Tinubu’s tenure but some of these things never came out in the open.”
He said “A lot happened during Pelumi’s (Mr Joko Pelumi, former Speaker’s) impeachment, it took time before he could be removed. So its a wrong assumption to say that nothing happened. It was only well managed.’’
