North Africa Al-Qaeda offers to help Nigerian Muslims

Print print Email email Share Share

An al Qaeda group in North Africa has offered to give Nigerian Muslims training and weapons to fight Christians in the West African country, where more than 460 people were killed in sectarian clashes last month.

Vice President Goodluck Jonathan sent in the military to halt the violence after four days of clashes between Christian and Muslim mobs armed with guns, knives and machetes in the area round the city of Jos in central Nigeria. "We are ready to train your people in weapons, and give you whatever support we can in men, arms and munitions to enable you to defend our people in Nigeria," the statement by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) said.

It was signed in the name of Abu Mus'ab Abdel-Wadoud, who was described as the "emir", or leader, of the group, and appeared on Islamic websites that often carry statements from groups using the al Qaeda name around the world. "You are not alone in this test. The hearts of Mujahideen are in pain over your troubles and desire to help you as much as possible, in the Islamic Maghreb, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Chechnya," it said.

Nigeria has roughly equal numbers of Christians and Muslims, though traditional animist beliefs underpin many people's faith.

About 1 million people were killed in Nigeria's 1967-70 civil war, and there have been outbreaks of religious unrest since then. But more than 200 ethnic groups generally live peacefully side by side in the West African oil producer.

Last month's violence erupted after an argument between Muslim and Christian neighbours over the rebuilding of homes destroyed in previous clashes in 2008.

A Nigerian man tried to bomb a U.S.-bound plane on Dec. 25 in an attack claimed by Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, a Saudi-Yemeni group using the al Qaeda name and based in Yemen.

AQIM kidnapped a Frenchman and three Spaniards in the Sahara late last year and said it would kill the French hostage by the end of January unless Mali freed four al Qaeda prisoners.

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said on Monday the group had extended the deadline.

AQIM has waged a campaign of suicide bombings and ambushes in Algeria but in the past few years has shifted many of its activities south to the Sahara desert.

Last year it killed a British tourist, Edwin Dyer, after kidnapping him on the border between Niger and Mali while he was attending a festival of Tuareg culture.

The group also said it shot dead a U.S. aid worker in the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott in June last year and carried out a suicide bombing on the French embassy there in August that injured three people.

Saharan states have been planning a regional conference to map out a joint response to the al Qaeda threat for more than a year, but the gathering has been postponed repeatedly.

When will all these things stop? These Muslims have taken enough live already. My dear muslim friends under Al Queda, when will you realise that this your war is only destroying the world and killing the elements of mercy, love, wisdom and humanity inside you? Haven't you realised you might wipe the world away with all these killings and the only living things that will be left to proclaim and live your message will be goats, dogs and other animals who obviously can't. Violence solves nothing.

The northern leaders should do more for our unity. A country without a president is dangerous Turai should tell Yaradual to step down....for the unity of Nigeria,

Posted by Nwosu Chukwuemeka on Feb 01 2010

It is obvious that the initial onslaught by the muslims has vindicated the belief that there was outside influence in the conflict. Let me onbehalf of other Nigerians sound a note of warning to Al queda, we are one united and indivicible country and would battle you to the very end.

The earlier we realise that black is the most heated race in the world, the better for us.I think,is high time we leave God to fight His battle for Himself, since we believe that God is greater than anybody.I hate to hear that black fighting against each other for any reason(be it religion or tribe).I have traveled around the world, believe me the arabs were the worste heaters of black. So if the see any opportunity to wipe them out of this surface, they will gladly uttilise it.So let us be wise and begin to be our brothers keepers.

Nigeria is coming to an end. We can finally see that both religions can't co-exist under one roof, one flag and one people. In my honest opinion, I feel we should split. There should be the Southern Republic of Nigeria (SRN) and the Northern Republic of Nigeria (NRN). There is no country in this world that has equal population of muslims and Christians. That i believe is the foundation of all our problems. It can not work and will not work. The Southerners should go their own way while the Northerners do the same. The army is split, the reserves are split. Natural resources remain where they belong and we all happily divide. There is no better solution to this mess!

Here we go! Nigerian leaders! I am a christian, i never knew what it was to hate a muslim as a christian growing up in nigeria until i got to Europe, i still do not hate muslims but this needs a united response from religous and political leaders. but how can we have that if we can't put our house in order, No president! senate, house of rep, FEC can't make a unified conclusion and decision on what to do. Coruption is rife in the all parastatals and private sector. Our children are watching, the world is watching, we are watching. These fanatics know we are at a cross road, they want to take control! DO NOT LET THEM! PLEASE MAKE A DECISION! we need strong leadership. LEADERS! Stop making decisions based on selfish tribal lines, make decisions based on being a Nigerian!!!!!Please before this gets out of control!

Posted by Francis O. on Feb 01 2010

I agree that Nigerian religious leaders need to speak up but I would suggest that the onus is more on Muslim leaders since this message is directed at Nigerian Muslims. Our Muslim leaders must speak up also and forcefully urge Nigerian Muslims to ignore any and all messages from Al Qaeda. Our Muslim leaders must make clear that whatever disputes we may have in Nigeria, it is a quarrel within the family so to speak. Input such as this from outsiders (be they Al Qaeda or crazy Evangelists from the US) is neither solicited nor welcome.

Posted by Bose on Feb 01 2010

This is not the way out. Our leaders should say no to this. Muslim and Christian are brothers. lets stop violence, it cant take us any where. it will only hinder our progress and development as a Country.

Posted by usman on Feb 01 2010

i always restrain my self from passing comments on sayings and comments of people that have no basis and irrational. Why are people so gullible these days that any report that can never be substantiated such as the one above always attracts stupid comments from people who claim to be educated and civilised.People should put on their thinking caps before pouring out venoms on muslims unneccesarly.

Posted by jerry okeke on Feb 01 2010

this foolish groups is gaining upper hand in nigeria, our government should do every thing possible to get ride of them,if possible the should contact foreign countries for help, I think America can help us if we are truthful.I think in our government there is so many fanatics who is trying to bring us down in the name of moslem. there is so many moslems in our government, and becos of this the power is not balance and most them seek advice from all this fanatic countries like Iran ,syrian libya and sundan becos the want to make nigeria an islamic nation.I think its now that we need a help before it is too late,we need real help not food aid or the should help us to divid the country into two that is the best option so that the moslems can do what they want. the christians have suffered enough from the hands of this moslems and is time for international community to do something.

This was obviously written by someone who has very little frame of reference when it comes to Nigeria. What does the civil war have to do with Al Qaeda or with religious tensions? And if the story is about Al Qaeda in Mahgreb training people in Nigeria, why is there a direct link being created here to Abdulmuttalab, who was trained in Britain and in Yemen? This seems like rather irresponsible reporting. In any case, the answer to whatever threat there is West Africa, is to work towards development and the alleviation of poverty. West African Muslims are not like the few radicals on the Arabian Peninsula. It is hunger and desperation, and lack of education that leads them to participation in these crazy activities.

And oh yeah, Mr. President, how exactly do you intend to respond to this threat to our national security and unity from beyond our borders? At the very least, a speech to the Nigerian people urging them to ignore such messages and stressing our identity as one nation might be in order don't you think? Not so easy from a hospital bed? This is absolutely ridiculous. Enough already! Resign and let someone who is able to serve the Nigerian people do the job!

Its pitty that people from other regions, who know little of Nigeria's religious crisis is suddenly trying to lend a helping hand. so be it. They should trace the sectarian crisis in Nigeria since the end of Nigerian Civil war and determine how many innocent christians have been killed in Kano, Bauchi, Gombe. Maiduguri, Kaduna and now jos.

WE CAN DENY IT ALL WE WANT OR WISH IT GOES AWAY. BUT I BELIEVE THAT ONLY OUR RELIGIOUS AND POLITICAL OPPORTUNISTS OR DO SOMETHING SERIOUS ABOUT PUTTING AN END TO IT, THE CHOICE IS THEIRS, (SPONSORS OF THESE ACTS). BUT IF THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO PUT AN END TO IT, THEN WE WILL ALL SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES AS A NATION. A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THE NIGERIA GOVT AND OUR SECURITY/INTELLIGENT AGENTS IS THAT, WE REACT AFTER THE FACTS, EVEN AFTER THERE IS GLARING WARNING THAT THERE IS IMPENDING DOOM ABOUT TO BE UNLEASHED IN THE COUNTRY, THEY TEND NOT TO TAKE ANYTHING SERIOUS. THIS IS A CLEAR EVIDENCE IS OF LACK OF GOOD GOVERNANCE AND INCOMPETENCE IN A COUNTRY FULL OF IGNORANT PEOPLE IN HIGH PLACES.....VERY SAD INDEED FOR NIGERIA. BTW, WHERE IS MADAME REBRANDING, WHAT DOES SHE HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THE CURRENT HAPPENINGS IN NIGERIA?

We continue to deceive ourselves about co-existing and saving the Nigerian state. It is a known fact that there is very dangerous fanatism breeding amongst our moslem brothers and they would not even admit it. The hate in this country is too much for us to continue to exist as one. Let the predominantly moslem north go their way and declare their Islamic State and the South go and sort themselves out. Enough is a enough

Dear Moderator, I notice that, in a democracy like in Nigeria, you refuse posting some of the comments of your readers. You prefer the politicaly correct posts we can all constantly read here, where everybody complains about our leaders, our sins and other very wellknown dark sides of our people. But, when I start criticising religion and focusing on the social aspect of the problem, then it becomes, to you, unpublishable. Don't you think that you are, 'in fine', part of the problem and somewhere responsible of the absence of decision, critiscism and reaction of the citizens of this great country?

@Me - I agree with you 'Me'. My comments have been filtered out on some occasions too and I wonder where is the 'freedom of speech' even online. Our problems in Nigeria are fundamental and the Press is a huge part of it. For instance, how come in the whole of Nigeria, there is no Media house that can category give an investigative report on the whereabouts of Yar'Adua - all we've got are 'speculations'. In a democratic system, the onus of responsibility rest of the Press to reveal every hidden and unhidden facts and truth about issues that affect a common man; but that's not the case in Nigeria. Let's address these problems from their root and stop wasting punches biting the wind.

I have said this before, you dont need an astrologist to figure it out, it will soon happen, NIGERIA as a country needed a christian leader up till 2013, to be safed. let us allow Jonathan to take over, because this yaraduas illness might be a blessing to Nigeria. could somebody imagen what will happen to Nigerian christians if Israel attacks Iran, and UN goes for Israel. 3rd world war or the war of armagedon, the sign has always been there, so Nigerian christians has to be ready, though the GOD we serve will always be there for us, Christian should trust in GOD but be physically alert or obtain some trainings, because their target will be to wipe out christians from AFRICA, and they will come down from the north.

In all the states where violence had occured it was more of a spontaneous type but in plateau it is actively encouraged by the state government. This Jang made trouble in gongola where he pitched tiv against jukuns and they both were christians. So long as Jang continues Jos will not have peace. Look at Kaduna's mature leadership how they attained peace. Nigeria is really a disaster waiting to happen. In next 10 yrs it will be 200 million people for 20 years we have no electricity can you imagine. So what work will all these 200 mil be doing . I fear for this country. Europeans killed each other for 300 years untill sense prevailed. May be its our turn now look at Congo , Somalia etc..

I was born in jos, was raised in jos and still live in jos. Jos was the most peaceful state in nigeria, I live by moslems and at one point I trusted moslems more than christians. As these riots frequently occur my position concerning Islam has changed. I don't care if the above statements are true, was I do understand and know is that Islam is an irony in it's self. It is meant to mean peace but the opposite of peace is what it really is. What is the world's greatest trouble today? "Terrorism" and moslems are 90% responsible. Islam thirsts for control, and if not gotten peacefully it would take it by force. Look at Egypt, from history it was never an islamic country, and if you go to egypt, majority are not Arabs but egyptians who are not moslems. Coming back to Nigeria, states like kaduna, gombe, bauchi have many christians. In fact, the aborigines of theses states are not moslems but today these states are classified as Islamic states. the control issue is what is causing the riots in jos. Fortunately, the aborigines are not giving their state to the moslems. Besides Islam has asked its followers to "soak this world with the teachings of Allah" by peaceful means and if this does not work then by the shed Of blood (force). To them, they are in a holy war (jihad) following the commands of Allah. I just hope we recognized that the acts of terrorism is a means to make the world beg its knees and accept Islam as it one and only religion. But God forbid, it would never happen.
