Alamieyeseigha seeks reinstatement as governor

Print print Email email Share Share

The Yenagoa High Court will, on Wednesday, January 27, commence trial in a suit instituted by the former governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha praying that the court compel the Federal Government and the National Assembly to reinstate him as the governor of the state.

The former Air Force officer lost the position when he was impeached in 2005 by the state House of Assembly after his indictment for corruption by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The former governor had filed a suit earlier in 2005 after his removal from office, but a federal appeals court in Abuja had ruled that the case be returned to a high court in Bayelsa for retrial.Mr Alamieyeseigha, popularly called the Governor-General of the Ijaw Nation, was removed after he was indicted by a panel set up by the state government in 2005 to investigate allegations of financial recklessness against him.

A running battle with the then president of the country, Olusegun Obasanjo and an encounter with the London Metropolitan Police, which arrested him for money laundering, were also part of the problems that put paid to his governorship career.

He was replaced by his then deputy and current Vice President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan.

Executive battle

The former governor has also been enmeshed in a political battle with the current governor of the state, Timipre Sylva. c Some of his choice properties within and outside the country were confiscated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the aftermath of his impeachment and trial.

Mr. Alamieyeseigha had stayed out of politics since then, only to resurface during the state gubernatorial bye-election in which he surprisingly supported the incumbent governor against his nephew, Ebitimi Amgbare who contested under the platform of the Action Congress (AC).

So a man embezzles state funds in lump sums, gets arrested in london, escapes using the disguise of a woman and wants to be reinstated as governor of Bayelsa? Its is finished! Why is he even running around instead of being in jail? Only in Nigeria will such clowns be roaming the political streets!

Someone please wake me up from this wild dream! I just had a night mare that Alams the thief wants to be re-instated as Governor of Bayelsa State. Hello, Farida Waziri where art thou? Just tell me what kind of examples are we setting for the younger generation? Only in Naija. Let the yeye man know that this is the information age. We the people will not let this happen. The whole world will hear about the nonsense that is being perpetrated in Nigeria. This will help to increase Nigeria's ranking on 'Transparency International's ranking' of corrupt nations. Keep it up.

Posted by Ologbojo on Jan 26 2010

But Alarm is an ex-convict whether he had a running (or jugging) battle with obasanjo or not.well, let him put the law to test and see.

Wow, that a man! After being impeached for corruption and disgracing the nation he wants to be reinstated as governor! Something is DEFINITELY wrong! He must have no shame or the nation simply is more corrupt than we imagined!!!! All please pray for selfless and transparent leader and remember to be transparent in your office and in your homes else you will be like them when you get to "government"

When this guy jumped bail in London dressed like a woman and showed up in Yenogoa, millions of Bayelsans hailed him. When he appeared in court to defend himself, the court room and environ was filled up with admirers and supporters. When he was let loose, there was a big party. Now he is a respected Ijaw elder and leader of thought. I saw him walk confidently into a Chinese restaurant in Ikeja GRA in December '09, stomach properly "tucked", with a pretty twenty something girl at his side. He was like a celebrity, everybody wanted to shake his hands. Why wont a guy like that want his governorship back? For him and for the people he governed, "nothing spoil" - "govamet money for govamet house, ba quomi"

As part of the Amnesty program for Niger/Delta militants, terrorists, money launderers and government looters, could it be possible that the government of Umaru Musa has pardoned Mr. Alams? Hey don't forget that our number 3 citizen was once a wanted man.

Posted by Chuks kaduna on Jan 26 2010

Posted by Ken Nwabueze on Jan 26 2010

Evil of such colossal magnitude can only be perpetrated in Nigeria where anything goes. The man should be ashamed of himself and exit Nigeria politics. Anyway it is possible somebody high up is giving him assurance that he can be reinstated, let's see how it all plays out.

Posted by abe on Jan 26 2010

Why not? Bayelsa State still has some funds that need looting. Chop and quench.

Posted by Favourite Lewis on Jan 26 2010

Why would he not want to be even the President of Nigeria afterall his former Deputy may soon be Acting President if God permits? Was he ever punished for the billions he stole? Nigeria's value and judicial systems are corrupt to the root. I wouldnt be surprise if he even contest under PDP as one of those parties that harbour criminals (One Mr.James Ibori -a 419 man- case is long forgotten and the real Mr James Ibori who ripped off Delta State is now a free man. Do you hear of Tafa Balogun again? Where are the billions stolen by Sunday Afolabi on national ID card project? Obasanjo is the Chairman of PDP board of Trustee, Iyabo is leading a Committee in the house after fraud scandal, Sluggish governors Udenwa and Egwu are now Ministers, etc )

Posted by Jim Emblem on Jan 26 2010

I'm not trying to pre-empt impending court judgement but i think the best Alams could get is to have his impeachment reversed & not re-instatement as governor. Alams should discontinue the court action on moral ground.

Posted by Austine Uche Ejeke on Jan 26 2010

Dreamer alams! Any way anything is possible in Nigeria. He can still be governor, what he needs to do is to reconcile with pot belly and tear mouth buffoon in otta and "see" the people that matter and pronto, the governorship post will come back to him. After all what do you want us to say when crooks like Orji Uzor Kalu, James Ibori, Peter Odili,Lucky Igbinedion are walking the streets as free men!

Posted by Biodun Atanda on Jan 26 2010

This is what happens in a country where thieves are not executed immediately. No one can say, this criminal may even aspire to be the President of this country one day. I weep for this country.

Posted by Frank Neme Ossai on Jan 26 2010

There is a precedent for this. James Ibori if we are to believe what we read in the papers is one of the few persons controling the Yar adua government, even though he has no public portfolio. I am not surprised that another crook called Alamieyeseigha is fighting to become governor. I might even suggest that Ibori should assign the case to that same High court Judge in Asaba that quashed all the charges against him. That way, "Mr Governor General" of the highly deprived and impoverished Ijaw nation will be assured of total victory in the case. I thank God for Pastor Tunde Bakare and Professor Wole Soyinka and the other "Save Nigeria Now" patriots that have boldly confronted the honourable Idiots that we have in NASS. Nigeria has terminal Cancer and untill the Jerry Rawlings of Ghana Formula is applied in its cure, highly respected and proven crooks like Alamieyeseigha,Ibori, and a host of others that Mallam Ribadu wanted to bring to justice will continue to ride in the corridor of power.

Besides, the law has its stands, and nobody can tell what happens next.If u find urself in Bayelsa today, u will certainly appreciate Alams. The truth is that the timing was wrong for that suit! The man in question built bayelsa the way it is and since his removal from office wrongly, and till date nothing has changed in Bayelsa, believe me. Any Bayelsan anywhere would kick ur ash, and romove one of ur teeths, if you talk anything wrong about Alams. pls rest this matter, cos he was and still the man of the people.

You will all be surprised what will be the outcome of the court ruling. Before this man made up his mind to go to court, he might have made contacts and prominent personalities have asked to take it to the court where they will influence the judiciary with what it takes. Let us keep our fingers crossed until after the court ruling. Remember that in Nigeria, anything can happen.
