Jonathan orders troops to Jos religious crisis

With close to 200 deaths so far recorded as a result of renewed Muslim-Christian clashes in the central city of Jos in Plateau state, vice-president, Goodluck Jonathan has ordered troops to the state to restore peace.

National Security Adviser Sarki Mukthar told reporters that "the military have moved in concert with the police to normalise the situation" in the city. He also said the vice president had ordered security chiefs to "immediately move to Jos, to assess the situation".

Fresh violence broke out in the one of Nigeria's largest cities between Christians and Muslims early Tuesday morning after a day calm following violent attacks on Sunday. The state's commissioner for information, Gregory Yenlong announced a 24-hour curfew on the state and directed non-essential workers to vacate their offices.

Dead bodies
"We received 156 dead bodies this morning and another 36 this afternoon, in total we have 192 dead bodies" said Balarabe Dawud, the head of the central mosque in Jos.

The fighting had started on Sunday when some youth protested the renovation of a building damaged in a Christian-majority area during an earlier crisis in 2008 in which close to 200 lives were lost. Houses and vehicles were set ablaze during Sunday's violence and the state governor, Jonah Jang imposed a 12-hour curfew on the state capital that day. Police were deployed on the streets Monday to enforce the curfew invoked on Sunday and it appeared that peace had been restored to the city.

The Red Cross said more than a hundred people were seriously injured in the fighting and 3,000 people were displaced in Sunday's clashes.

Trapped
Unconfirmed reports from Kuru Jenta, a village on the outskirts of Jos claimed that the village had been set on fire Tuesday, and the Muslims in the village had been surrounded. It is unclear what their fate has been. NEXT also gathered that about thirty National Youth Service Corps members were holed up without food at a Christian corps member's fellowship building in Jos.

The National Youth Service Corp Director-General, Ismaila Tsiga had on Monday threatened to withdraw all corps members serving in Plateau state after the violence broke out on Sunday. Three male corps members were murdered in the state during the 2008 violent clashes.

Plateau state governor, Jonah Jang is expected to make a public address on Tuesday night.

sometimes i wonder how barbaric some set of individuals are in this country and we talk about re branding when some are killing one another in the cover of religion!

Posted by adibles on Jan 19 2010

That is why we need a state/local government police, if we have a state/local government police, they would have responded fast to the situation. the moment we start to play politics with everything, it will be very hard for Nigeria to move forward

Posted by linus on Jan 19 2010

The report is not balanced enough as the government commemnt on the cause of the incident is not well related. The The plateau state police command through the PPRO had stated in clear terms that the the crisis started after some muslem youths attact worshiper at St. Micheal church at Nasarawa Jos. The said renovation was not the cause of the crisis. The Police PPRO should be contacted to get the real fact and not the feeling of some individuals.

i can't imagine this thing is happening in our dear country, instead of us to fight for national cause,we are busy fighting each other over religion. The sad truth is that,we are not ready to develop this country as a people because of our individual sentiment.

Posted by mustapha manga on Jan 19 2010

Its very unfortunate, what is happening in jos.But please next time let fight for national cause(bad leaders) not over religion.

IT BEATS ME WHEN I REMEMBER HOW I HAD HELD SACROSANCT THE LATIN PROVERB "honesta turpitudo est pro causa bona" for a good cause wrong doing is virtuous". IF THE PERPETRATORS AND POWERS THAT BE BEHIND THE BARBARISM AND EVIL CAUSE IN THE ONCE PEACEFUL TOWN HELD OR STILL HOLD ON TO THE VIEW I HELD, THEN I WEEP, NOT FOR ITS DESTRUCTIVE PURVIEW, BUT FOR THOSE TO COME WHO MIGHT FIND A REASON TO SUBSCRIBE TO THAT VIEW!

This is the real reason we are on the US terrorist list - a nation where one set of people can kill another just because of their religious beliefs - what do you call that nation? and of course - government makes speeches but nothing is really done, the perpetrators are unknown ....

Enough of these senseless killings of innocent Nigerias be them xtains or moslems.....i pity the families of trapped corp members...for me i will not even wait for any withdrawing order...i will withdraw my yard from such area or any other area within the North becuase this have the potential of becoming a Yardua/Jonathan issues violence

May the souls of all the murdered innocent muslems rest in perfect peace in the paradise.i reject that the christian communities of jos are really christians, because jesus(isa AS)denounces violence, though he was by then oppressed by the jews

"...In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force." -Martin Luther King (1963). May God help us help ourselves.

FROM BAUCHI TO JOS, FROM MAIDUGIRI TO KANO....THE NORTH IS THE PROBLEM OF THIS COUNTRY

Posted by John Johnson on Jan 19 2010

How much more can Nigeria take? Who is patriotic enough to rescue Nigeria from this mayhem? These are times when the country needs a strong leader and we have a leadership vacuum. Where are the Babangidas, Buharis, Muritala Mohammed of the army? Kick these these politicians off in the name of God!

Posted by Folajimi Aleshinloye on Jan 19 2010

What a shame Nigeria. Just when the whole world is rising up in aid of Haiti, due to natural disaster, we are here killing ourselves over stupid and irresponsible reasons. We are a big joke in this country. The Presidential embarrassment is still ongoing, and now this. Come to think of it, I have never heard of clashes between traditionalists and any of the other religions. Yet these religions are the ones that have gained large followership and claim to be most educated and modern. Fellow Nigerians, May God redeem us all. (Amen)

IS IT TREASON IF WE ASK THE NIGERIAN ARMY TO TAKE OVER? NO!!! SINCE WE ARE NOT ASKING FOR A TAKE-OVER BY THE CAMEROONIAN ARMY. LOOKS LIKE WE DONT HAVE SOLDIERS NOW.

Posted by Weazy on Jan 20 2010

The NYSC DG should stop threatening and take action. Youth Corpers cannot be made to suffer for what they did not bargain for. If Jos is not secure enough to harbour Youth corpers then no corp memeber should be posted there simple.

Sometimes i wonder how barbaric and heartless some people can be to their fellow human being, the way we terrorize ourselves in this country is crazy. Suicide bombing isnt the only act of terrorism we should focus on, this Jos crisis is an act of terrorism that should be urgently looked into. Charity begins at home, we should rebrand ourselves in this country before rebranding the name "Nigeria".

In the course of human struggle, man has been engaged in constant battle over lean resources. But the advent of religion, which moulds the sacred identity of our being and gives peace, is unfutunately used as a tool for aggrandizement to push for sectorian interests. Why do we think we can fight for the God that made the wwwwwwhhhhhhhooooooooleeeeeeeee world. Why do we decieve ourselves and others under our subject. Nigeria is going down the drain by day. Where are we heading to? Imagine the number of lives and properties destroyed in a winkle of an eye in all crisis. It's simple, when the center becomes heated then would Nigerians know that some people were really not meant to be part of this kangaro amalgamation called Nigeria. The proponent of the Nigerian Civil War saw this day over 40years ago and wanted to avoid it, but thier effort was proven abortive. It's a shame! Nothing works in the country I am born into but religious crisis. I will carry my head high as a Nigerian becuase I know that one day just like the USSR, we will peacefully go our ways. I also pray that Nigerians see this time as a better time before the Americans seize the opportunity which they are gradually mobilizing to penetrate in the name of terrorism... Jos really has to go back to history and make amends or live in the fate as a result of the mistakes they have made over years... If you see a fulani/Hausa man and a snake you better decide on the one that will live with you.

I'm vexed because the perpetrators of the incedence in the Jos religious crisis and in other parts of Nigeria would not read this message since there is no power suppling light to them. We have all lost the vision we never had. Nigeria has no patriotic discipline, no love as a result of people surviving their fallout from the smallest unit of a social structure (family), what do you expected of an adult thrown out of his parental home at a tender age for for so long for studies in an informal setting at a distant place, no food, cloth and parental love; TOLERANCE has been traded for TERRORISM from one sect to another. This has crippled the very essence of our development. The backwardness, derailment, nepotism, tribalism, bigotry, aggradisement, mention it has taken the place of the earthquate, sonami, and other natural disasters in our being. My prayer is that we should not allow the experience of USSR to repeat itself now that it is apparent that we are a terrorist nation where the rich terrorize the poor with no job and sack, no hope for you even after receiving training from the National Directorate of Employment to access credit for the past years, no power and empty promises without recourse to think that the people would react, we cannot refine our own fuel?... a farmer (yam) who goes to the market from his barn to buy pounded yam! What comes over you when you see an animal walking comfortably without a head a its neck ... no president. Suffice to say we are refugees in this country... our FATHER LAND! O, patriot... is killing yourselves a solution? The peace rally "Enough is Enough" in Abuja is just a tip of the iceberg. I tell you, when the centre becomes heated particles would certainly begin to separate naturally. The Jos people need to sit an evaluate thier activities over the years and see where they have erred. The government of Plateau State, like River State, should design projects and site on the disputed land, paying compensation and causing these people to resttle or go by acquisition of the land in question. The proponents of the Nigerian Civil War saw the beacon over 40years ago but could not express its for the understanding of the peaceful Middle Belt including Jos who fought the war. The Hausa/Fulani man taste for blood is palpable unfortunately they did not experince, first-hand, the weight of the Nigerian Army hence, they see themselves as the power brokers of the nation. No, the man with the HEART; the power brokers come from the South-South. They bravely confronted the colonial masters and asked for our independence, but like I said without a vision one we never had. Unless a BRAVE HEART amongst the elites in Jos stands tall and remind this people that they are not NOK thier heritage will fade forever. Do you want to tell me that there are no Christians in Kano? Have they done anything to alter the heritage of the people with the use of force? Have they dared to ask for what the Hausa/Fulani are asking for in Jos? These is complete disrespect for the birthright of a peaceful people and it is a SHAME... Look at the magnificient market complex raised in flames, which could serve as a tourist site; an heritage destroyed by this people. I think it is high time people are tought that Tolerance, respect for heritage and religious difference form part of PATRIOTISM... Long live NIGERIA

Problem of identity! People here identify with unNigerian things such as "indegen vs. nonindegen" "vast poverty vs. opulence". And the most convenient thing to explain these things is Christianity versus Muslim. How quickly we forget our history?

Posted by Usman Imam Tudun Wuzirchi K M C on Jan 24 2010

I call on all Nigerian muslims to pray for their souls not Yar'adu'a's soul because he does'nt care abou muslims'condition in Jos

Posted by shehu adamu zadawa on Jan 26 2010

it was happined, let us pray for peace.

Posted by Kabiru Ibrahim Jibril on Feb 03 2010

I, seek for Nigerians to pray for our Great Nation, Remember Nigeria is the only country we have, lets seat and talk to our self and make a better solution to resolve our problems, remember No contry can move forward without peace and prosparity,Nigeria its the only county happen to be our home, we should not destroyed our country, because of Political or religious intrest.

Posted by precious on Feb 09 2010

i think the solution to this problem is simple. every tribe and language in Plateau should allow the indigens of the state to own and rule their town. myself i'm quite comfortable with just residing in the town. the selfish leader that gives the youth wrong directives will soon be visited by God's wrath.

what a mayhem, what a shame, what a leader, what a country, what a state, what a citizen. Sumtims i wndr, they say 'e go better' but i dont c how. Wen we talk of makin Nig a gr8t nation, i laugh bcos d head cannot function without d neck. how can u talk of rebrandin a nation whose pple are stil in a state of insanity. We need a miracle. Cause dis shit is so stericle.

the issue is that its very sad that it has happened, what a sad tail situation, Nigeria has no security, infact zero security net work, imagine this people where not bombed, ok they were bruterly snailed with matchets and this evil act took a long for them to have been able to kill about 500 people, during this evil, there would have also be large screeming noise, but yet there was no security alert,, but if it happen to be fraud , money laundary, without any noise , the police will get alerted and every top officer will respond fast by requesting there own share,,,, shame to our security network,, what has happened is unimaginable, fulanis with there cow brains, they should also be wiped out as well, they are terrorists and should be treated as such
