Deadly riots rock Jos

Once again, the city of Jos in central Nigeria went up in flames as crisis erupted leading to the death of over 20 people. The state governor Jonah Jang has already declared a dusk to dawn curfew.

The fracas is coming exactly 55 days after President Umaru Yar'Adua left the country for treatment in Saudi Arabia.

Naija, what's wrong with us? Can't we stay for a week without being in the news? Jos had always been a peaceful city, whatever happend to that peace that once pervaded that old state. Children at that.

No commen, to solve the problems is like the way political leader sharing the national income. Nigeria should split and every tribe should able to stand what they believe. I look forward to new nation and new name in coming years to arrive. Without spliting Nigerian will continue to leave in their poverty.

The truth is that our government is not serious. What ever happened to the Reports of the Committees that were set up to look into the remote causes of the previous riots ... NADA. Until the government is serious about prosecution of the criminals who perpetuate these acts, the so-called religious riots will continue. These people are known ... they are not spirits. Secondly, much more have to be invested in education ... as 99% of the people who start the violence are illiterates who can be easily brainwashed.

When the cat is out the RATS are at play Interest groups who seek to gain advantage in a vacuum will sponsor upheavals in different potentially volatile areas of the country. The aim is possibly to test or to force a hand or to divert attention from fertilizer, crude oil, diesel/petrol, fx, banking palava and other scams. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY PEOPLE!

The clash in jos city is the fault of Nigerian government, become, they are the one who create the civil war for the nation, why can't be the first deadly clashed will be lesson for them. Couse, neither muslim nor christern was successed due to improper sucurity that protect life and properties. If we recall so far back the top point in 7 agender of Mr president is security but incline to enrol the max number of security. In a nation of 150 million people, how could a less sucurity control this population, support to be if population is 100% while the sucurity be 50%. So government pure are playing the game {fight} among them, but one day the game will over to you.

Why conflict again ? Our president is sick , America listed us among terrorist because of one person out of 140 million, poor structural facilities and others. Now Jos crisis againg who knows the next state, but i pay it should stop and end in Jos. But we need understanding becuase PEACE CANNOT BE KEPT BY FORCE, IT CAN ONLY BE ACHIEVED BY UNDERSTANDING.

Posted by oneway thinking on Jan 18 2010

another issue of terrorism on ground...who says we aren't terrorists...All we can do is cry for these citizens and ask the question again and again...WHY?

Posted by zinny on Jan 18 2010

it is really pathetic that Jos cannot be listed as one of the peaceful states in Nigeria....Haba! can peace just reign for once in that place instead all you hear are fighting and blood shed...may God take control...

If this thing continues, and 'spreads' to a core northern state, it might point to the fact that it was all orchestrated...

When will the north ever learn to live in peace amongst themselves and the rest of the country. It's one religious riot today and another tomorrow. Has the north become a pepertual breeding ground for violence and terrorists? This must be stopped. The government must do something to stop this nonsense, as its setting the north back in particular and Nigeria in general.

Whenever I think of Jos & the crisis in that city unanswered questions keep flowing to my mind. Questions like; 1. Can a Nigerian be an alien in his country? 2. The governor of plateau state lamented that no birom man will be allowed any political seat in kano state by implication he is not allowing any Hausa man that opportunity. What does he have to say with regards to the present governor of kano and the former governor of Lagos state? 3. Historical records shows that the biroms are from niger republic and the Hausas migrated to the present plateau state over a century a go. How is one better indigen than the other? 4. The freedom given to any nigerian to reside in any part of the country and to own landed property, not to be subjected to any form of discrimination are there rights subject to the pleasure of the state governors? 5. How long does it take to be an indigen of a given area or what does it take to be an indigen? If we can answer these questions objectively and sincerely then we find solution to our problems in Jos. Any thing tribalistic and painting with religious colours will only spell doom to the system. The issue of being victorious I belief should be left for those that lost their love ones to decide.

It is disheartening that while other nations are battling with natural disasters which are not controllable we are still in the mess of human disasters which are definitely controllable. It is said that what goes into a mind comes out in a mind, the rate of violence has now become a part of our lives, can't we have a year without violence? So why contest our listing as a terrorist nation? We need Gods healing and cleansing.

The northern nation is proving to the rest of the world that they are indeed a terrorist enclave! The nothern nation is becoming intolerable. So if Good luck Jonathan was a northerner then civil war would have been long started. With all their manovers in Govt we are still patient. Or do they think they have monopoly of this madness? The south has a history of tolerance which the north has refused to learn. If we start killing them down south, then will they be at peace? The north should be guided otherwise-----!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by G.D.P on Jan 18 2010

Mr Sadiq,(1).a nigerian can never be an alien in his own country;but can be an alien in a state that doesn't belong to him.(2).The governor was right when he said that,or is it alie?(3).All Nigerians are migrants,it depends on who moved in first.(4).There is a limit to freedom in a state that is not yours e.g in kano, zamfara e.t.c for non-indigenes,please be sincere.(5).GIVE A MAN AN INCH AND HE'LL TAKE A MILE.

Posted by Robin Hood on Jan 18 2010

Its quite unfortunate. Nigeria is truly a terrorist country. Violence will never solve any logjam....for people that are aggrieved by the actions of the Governor..the courts are there to fight for their rights. Northerners are violent by nature....there are also Muslims in the South....Have we ever heard of Religious crisis in the South? The Northerners should change from their violent ways!!!!

really sad,may Allah bring peace and undertsanding amongst the people of nigeria.North and pleateau especially at this time.Arewa youths we need to take the future in our hands and stop this madness from the false crook leaders we have in the North.i mean save Arewa from the Arewa crooks that are visionless and lack the ability to bring lasting peace and development. We are tired of being a laughing stock.we are better and share a community of fine people.what we have done is to allow the very few bad ones dictate and drive us to the ground even when we try to get out of any mess.today we keep educating hate and worst apprehension of everything.O! Allah you said people will someday be like this and do very bad things in your name where you have caution against transgression.in the deepest of heart when you slay that one you see, what justification do you have to take that one life.if that one has brought no harm to you then truly you have transgress i tell you.he is your neigbour and you owe him responsibility to keep him safe even from hunger if Allah provides for you.If prophet muhammad and all other holy men have set an example you have not followed there example.

The major problem we are having in Jos are the muslim hausas. They are just banking on the weapons gotten from their so-called god-fathers. I was a witness when a powerful gun was collected from one of those vagabonds. God's intervention is what we need here.

Haba Sadiq, Let us be very sincere, irrespective of tribe or racial affliations. Are the crisis truly religious crises or because our brothers do not want to tell the truth. A crime against the state is a crime against the state. A wrong committed by any body is a wrong. Why will people refuse to submit themselve to instituted authority? Why kill innocent souls? If the Berom are from Niger Republic why the the Niger Immigrants always fighting them in Angwan rogo? Hatred for their brothers or what? It is time that any one caught in this crises should be made to face the wrath of the law.

Why are these problems always between the Hausas and every other one but especially the indigenous communities. I have lived in Jos for about 20 years now and in this time I have observed that there is so much harmony between the Plateau people and other peoples but there seems to be an eternal problem with the Hausa community. Indeed, even though a religious flavour is usually given to these crises they have very deep rooted tribal origins particularly coming from the Hausa community. In the November 2008 crisis, the Rikkos part of Jos, which is heavily residenced by Muslims of every tribal origin, suffered one of the heaviest loses. Why? The Hausa community attacked their fellow Muslims of non-Hausa origin, so many of whom were Yoruba. It was a terribly sad situation, many of the Yorubas and others have had to relocate to non-Hausa and consequently Christian dominated areas where they now enjoy greater security. The questions raised by Sadiq above don't have any bearing here, they are arguments only meant to cloud the absurd relationship between the Hausas and all other peoples who otherwise live in peace, respecting each other. The Hausas on individual basis are very nice people but because there is wonderfully intelligent propaganda going on within their community they do have a warped view of what the truth actually is. Unfortunately, I must say, the Governments of the past had been very poor at addressing the true issues or making public their findings, indeed, the religious authorities have also failed in their offices by not elaborating the tribal elements of this problem making it look more religious than tribal when in fact it is the other way round. I just hope that we as a people will be able to bring reason and TRANSPARENCY into play so as to bring peace. Hiding the causes and individuals by governments and other authorities will do us no good whatsoever.

Our leaders swore there is no terrorism in Nigeria. Our NASS members believed terrorism implied when a person or group of persons tried to kill Westerners through suicide bombing. Our leaders believe it is not terrorism when Islamic extremists in the North of Nigeria mass murder, maim or rip open the stomachs of non-muslims in order to achieve some religious or political goals. By not saying evil is evil our leaders further empower these muslim extremists. Ekweremadu was even canvassing for National honours for a bad father who overpampered his child that later escaped the father's control. It was not until saner senators over ruled Ekweremadu that he bowed his self-seeking head in shame.

The machete was definitely planted on this boy, ..by the Nigerian Police? No doubt. Notice the bandaged wound. Was he holding the machete while being treated? Wouldn't he had wriggled in pains at death and lost hold of the weapon? Above all, this was a decent boy from a decent home. Notice the smooth skin and boxer-pants on him! Wonder if this kind of boy would have participated in this kind of mayhem. He was definitely a victim of violence.

Sadik, Until Hausa/Fulanis learn to live in peace with other tribes and not try to claim that they are Born to Rule and Lord it over other tribes in Nigeria, Worse calamities shall befall us as a nation. You can see what a Hausa -Fulani is doing at the Presidency. He has been sick, but is so power hungry that he cannot hand over to his Vice President, simply because the vice president is not a Hausa/Fulani, What a shame!!!! Other tribes have more dignity than this. Not all Hausa/Fulanis are bad, especially the poor folks that just want to make a living, but your leaders, both traditional and Political are Evil. They do not mind trumping up the religious card, or ethnic card and sacrificing poor and innocent souls just to prove their selfish point. The Solution is better education of the millions of illiterate hausas in Nigeria. We have Non-Hausa Muslims in Southern ,western and Eastern Nigeria, and you never see them carrying arms against christians in those areas. Therefore the issue is not religion, but ethnic hatred of hausas against their fellow country men. We can see the shame at Aso rock, the senate and House of reps, and all these are orchestrated by a few Hausa men and their collaborators from the south. May God Deliver Nigeria from this EVIL in this year 2010.
