Jos crisis reignites again

Print print Email email Share Share

Violence, again, erupts in Jos, Plateau State capital, today leading to looting and burning of houses - and dislocation of hundreds of people. Security officers have however been deployed to the scene and a police officer said the crisis has been contained.

The communal harmony and peace which the mining town used to have has broken down following several inter-ethnic clashes over the years. Security agencies have identified disagreement over indigeneship, ownership of Jos, politics, ignorance and unemployment as the major causes of the mayhem.

Hundreds of lives and property worth millions of naira were lost in the last major riots in the town, on November 28, 2008 which occurred over a local election. Both state and federal government set up parallel committees to investigate this. The state panel, headed by Bola Ajibola completed its work last year and had submitted its recommendation to the state government. The presidential panel is still conducting its sitting into the crisis.

This terror on lives and property has been brought on by a decayed mind-set from a select selfish 'islamists' who deserve to be dealt with with a stern fist or at best brain-washed to save the future generations. This is beastly... Is this Nation still a nation?

...and they thought I will take up the offered appointment in Jos ...... when I love my life! Whoosai! Anyway truth be told until fair is fair, there will be crisis, or who will open eyes and allow strangers take over their fertile land without a fight??? Even the always scared Yoruba man will fight for his land and the Berom and Ananguta and other traditional Plateau people are warriors! Abeg let the Hausa/fulani muslim settlers 'settle in peace' like all other settler tribes have done. Stop causing katakata in another man's land!

I hope to live long enough to see this day, but I am not giving up COMPLETELY on my brothers from the North; NOT YET. By the way, Thanks for the Christmas Day Gift.

Since d nigeria constitution does not agreed dat a place of birth or abode can b claimed as indigene. Then d hausa can not fight 4 political post in jos. They should go 2 where they belong. I.e their parent home town either in kano, katsina,bauchi.etc. D way out of all dis rubish is 2 go back 2 d drawing board. Make indigenes by registration and things should b made on merit and not quata system as it is.

Lets understand that this is not a fight between Hausas and Beroms but a fight between Hausas and other tribes in the peaceful city of Jos. The Hausa/Fulani hates being called settlers in other people,s land. And you cant do such in their own land. This is not the era of othman dan fodio who seized so mqny towns and villages and installed his children as Emirs. One day, the hausas will no longer be relevant again in the body polity and they will suffer

Our leaders must be kidding and in denial.Until something is done, with the problems in some of the Northern states. The American govt will continue to place Nigeria on the list. This is really good for Nigeria, our leaders would be forced to deal with the intermittent crisis in the North. What the US govt should do is ban our leaders from traveling to the States.

I pray that The US and the EU ban all Nigerian federal, state, and local government politicians and relatives from travelling unless they are doing so on state business. You would then see this (and other nonsense) sorted out. Sharp, sharp!

The crisis in jos Is not about politics or tribalism or who own wat land it's actualy all about the hausa fulani(muslims),they just love violence and mayhem. Around 12-1:00 they started attacking people in church thereby killing a pastor at nassarawa and just now I saw a soldier who was shot and wounded by them so tell me? Who has issues now and always since 2001 the mayhem ignites from areas around them. This should stop if they can't live in peace they can as well leave.

Quite sad & touching,I urge pleatue state governor Air vice Marshal David Jona Jang (rtd)to resign from office with immediate effect as a matter of urgent important now that human lives were involved. The state commissioner of police should also be re-deploy to another state due to the fact that the state police command should have made a contingency arrangement for such ugly development to reduce the level of casualty to a bearerable minimum. However, the only solution to the unabated crisis in Job is an expansion of political space to accomodate all the tribes in governace of the state to address the problem of marginalization which experts believes is the remote cause of the religion crisis in Jos.Better still,Gov Jang should ask Gov Shakarau of Kano state the antidote of the long lasting relative peace in Kano State.4rm Department of political science University of Ado-Ekiti.

If i were the president, i'll make sure Jos should be devided to north & south but the solution for now is prayer to have peace. God bless the dead, may they rest in peace.

Posted by Olusegun J on Jan 17 2010

This crisis always occurring in the north should not be taken lightly at all. All the southern leaders have to sit together to make a decision about it and stop turning their faces. Their should be a conclusion that if their is anymore trouble their that affect southerners, the country should split ant that would be much better, because if we come from different countries and the kill a single citizen, that means war.

Posted by Tushe on Jan 17 2010

I feel that the crisis in Jos is not being attended to. This is for the fact that the Hausa man wants Jos at all cost. The issue of "indiginship" is not restricted to Plateau alone. What is happening in Kano, Bauchi, Katsina and all the Hausa land. You dear don't look for anything there. Because of their long stay in governance they design the polity to favour their own people. The fact that people kept quite it does not mean they are stupid. I believe the Hausa man feels that if things do not go their way then let the country burn. Look at what is going on in the country today, they programme things to go in line with their designs. They feed their children all sort of things even from a very tender age and their actions manifest then they say they donot know anything about it. Every intolerance in this country is hatcheted by them. Look at Boko Haram, Kalakatu, the beheading of the Nigerian's head in Kano, the religeous uphevel in Kaduna etc are some of the many examples. Their comments equally does not make for peaceful co-existance. If we must live together then the Hausa man must recognised other Nigerians with respect.

Hausas and the Fulanis are being targeted because they are Muslims. The problem started this morning when the Muslims attempted to rebuild their mosque which was burnt down during the last riot. The Muslims were attacked and many killed. When they attempted to defend themselves the police descended on them. It is only a mad man that will believe he can stop the Muslims by killing them. These are people who wants to be killed and they fight to the last to defend their faith and identity. This incident, so sadly, will further radicalize our society. If you think that by calling Muslims all sought of names you're doing any good to this country you're mistaken. Let us respect our respective rights as guaranteed by the constitution because this country Nigeria belongs to all of us.

Our problem is that we're not sincere with ourselves. We hate the truth and anything that comes with it, Were just being tribalistic and selfish. We should ask ourselves there simple questions: 1 are christians and muslims living in peace with one another before now? 2. If the answer is in the affirmative, what is the problem now? 3. Whenever crisis emerged, are we enjoying it? 4. Between christians and muslims who has power of eliminating one religion and allow the other? 5. Are those in position of authority suffering the pain you and I the common masses are going through? 6. I belief that is not possible. Then what is the way forward? 7. Is the muslims market by any degree different from the christians market?

Posted by ikenna on Jan 17 2010

The problem remains that the government has never done anything serious about crisis of this nature and that is why it keep on reoccurring. It doesnt just end in sending troops into the streets, the perpetrators of such actions should be made national law breakers and be brought to book. How can Nigeria grow with such crisis? Loads of lives and properties are lost in the process sending many people back to the scorching effect of poverty they have worked so hard to break out from. The worst of it all is the loss of priceless lives which cannot be replaced. If disciplinary measures are put in place, people will know the consequences of such actions and stay clear. I pray that God in his infinite mercy will visit Nigeria and shower my motherland with lasting peace and good governance that will take away the tears away from my dear peoples eyes and make them happy again.

I think this crisis is simple. The indigines r not employed, goverment is not doing anything to develpo the state. Look at the vast tourism resources and weather that the state has, teh indigines r not doing anything to explore it and be gainfuly employed to make themselves rightgul owners of their land. Instead they will be drinking all day. They making the efforts of other people in the town to bring it back to live useless. See how Kevin talked about the town...Now this...Aba....Thsi country needs true leaders.

Oh my dear so called 'Indegenes of Jos'!. Its a pitty that u cant understand the dynamics of real life. the fact that u cant compete with the hausa/fulani in every aspect of life does not give u the right to be aggressive. if u take it easy, we can all live and let live together in harmony. u should not close urself to jos alone, look at other parts of world, no one survives alone. instead of drinking burkutu and fighting us please turn ur aggression to productivity so that we get happiness.

Most Nigerians are already brainwashed. Several of them have no independent rational thinking. It is simply "think as bigots say" to some. If not so, why should Jos' ethno-political crisis and quest for power, control and share in National cake be taken to be an incidence of 'islamic extremism'? The press is guilty afterall for misinformation. Jos crisis has nothing to do with Islam, it is purely a quest for political dominance. Land palava is just secondary and a camouflag. Think straight, Nigerians!

Posted by Jos Address on Jan 18 2010

Mr Sean, I think Jos will always have crisis because the indigenous have been peaceful and welcoming some people that at the end look down on them. Just like you are doing. Dont worry, Its a Nigerian thing "good and quiet people are always trampled upon" For your information we dont drink all day, we are not unemployed, and Kevin Pam is from Plateau State!

The Hausa Fulani and the Moslems know the truth, if they will be sincere, they will say that they are people who would like to dominate where ever they find themselves. Hence with this spirit they create problems. They will also agree that, though not all moslems would fament troublem; some sect of Islam are good at famenting troble; they would even call other moslems 'KAFIRAI' Bearing these few things in mind, when somebody wants to achieve something selfish, simply, get this sect, brain wash them into 'JIHAD' (Holy War) and they will do it with the whole of their might. We are all Hausa and Fulani alike. Civilization has made it such that we can not continue with this kind of attitude. People now know their right and would not allow for any form of intimidation. Let's forget about dominion, secure our own inherited land and train our children in a manner they won't grow up to suffer tomorrow. We are no longer in the premitive era; when wars are waged, warn and lands taken over or Heads installed. Let's leave the people we live with with their culture and tradition; belives and faith. If I live in a place for a long time and want to claim indigeneship or citizenship; it meanse I am ready to accept the Language of that land as my language (for communication) It's applicable World wide. I can not become a citizen of the United States of America and I can not speak English. If I am able to win a none Moslem by my kind guesture where ever I find myself, isn't it better than to KILL? no wander; the rate at which Moslems migrate into Christianity is on the increase. Let's respect each others rights. "GYARA KAYAN KA, BAYA ZAMA SAUKE MU RABA BA" DA ALHERI.

I hatee the fact that when something happens in the north, people immeadiately condemn muslims and the hausa in general, as if they caused all the problems nigeria has, that is pure tribalism on the part of the southerners. And another fact that annoys me is that these things happen in the south, for example the crisis between the tribes in delta state, nobody seems to talk about this. I am not supporting the violence but we are Nigerians, not sountherners or northeners, we have to join hands and help each other in order to build our nation...because development is in our hands not in the hands of the government but us the citizens at the present moments...

I have gone through the article above and the responces that follows. It is sad to note that we have been so fractionalised that to the point where we no longer think straight. Even the corpers who are suppose to be the leaders of tommorrow. The Government is a reflection of the followership and indeed Jang is a disapontment. I counted 48 dead bodies myself yesterday evening in Jos including a very close friend. I was born in Jos 43 years back and as I drop this last word I will move to my home town in Osun state, but the question is; the whole world is thinking nationalism but the people of Plateau are still thinking Triabalism. Must the Hausa and Fulani fight at the slightest pfrovocation? where is the love taught by your great grand parents. It is a shame on all of you the Hausa, Birom, Anaguta, Jarawa, Fulani. Afizere, Tarok whose ancessestors are people of honour yet you chose violent. Good bye Jos. I will remember you for my father diesd peacefully in Jos 36 years back, and mother was killed in 2008 during the riot. I shall remember thee as the land of death.

I have read with kin interets the contributions above. Haba!Let us at least tell the truth for our common good Nigerians. How can we claim we do not know who trigers voilence in the land. Why the insults to the loving and peace loving host communities of Jos. Who feeds who? Remember that no business thrives without the primary capital (land), is it a crime to be loving and kind & to give you the land? When you insult the indigenes you forget that there are the 'yan iska' who are always amidst you. There are other non-indegines in Jos and in Plateau state. Who amongst them can say the Beroms, Jarawa, Anaguta or any tribe on the Plateau ever ignited a crisis or attacked them? Look at it in a broader dimension who is responsible for religious crises in Nigeria all this while? There is much to be uncovered in the Jos crisis it is both religious and terrorism. The islamic agenda against Plateau & Nigeria is a long seated one. we must live together Nigerians. Let true Nigerians not get tired of praying to the God who vindicates righteously.

Posted by Hwei Vwel on Jan 19 2010

Comments by our moslem friends point to rhe fact that the simplicity and peaceful disposition of the Plateau indigenes is taken for granted by the Hausa/Fulani settler. He does not want to be called settler and so exploit the Nigerian Constitution to his favor. Yet when you go to the Hausa's states it doesn't matter how long you stay, the Constitution does apply to you. It is ingrate to hate and kill your landlord no matter who you thik you are. Such people hate progress as such desire a state of emergency for Plateau, this is a strategy to stop the devopment Plateau is experiencing under the dynamic leadership of the son of the soil. No indigene wants to destroy achievements but will defend it! Long live Plateau State! Long live Nigeria!

I blame Islamic youths who chose to loose their life for a promise they are not sure of-holy war! With such misleading doctrine, fools give-up their precious life; If these islamic rioters will develope sense, they should have wondered why their leaders has not gone to die and make that same heaven they preach.

for those that did not know what causes the problem, this is it "The crisis that engulfed the Plateau State capital of Jos on Sunday started at Dutse Uku on the city outskirts when Christian youth tried to stop a Muslim man from renovating his house that was destroyed in the November 2008 riot, according to Alhaji Kabir Muhammad, the man at the center of the storm. Speaking to our reporter in Jos yesterday, Alhaji Kabiru said, “During the 2008 crisis [in Jos], my house was burnt and I had to relocate elsewhere while I started renovating it gradually. By weekend, I had reached the level where I was going to put on the decking. The residents in my area had earlier volunteered to help me when I come to put on the decking. Therefore yesterday (Sunday, January 17th) people came to the site to help in putting on the decking. We did a significant level of the work when the sand finished, so I rushed to Yan’ Tifa [area] and ordered two trucks of sand.” He continued, “When the driver went for the second round to supply the sand, I saw from afar that some people were stoning the people in the tipper truck, while the people in the truck too were stoning them. I went down there to see what was happening, and they told me that they were insulting them. Many people gathered there and consoled the tipper men and everybody dispersed. Then the person that was stoning the people in the truck went and told his people that he was beaten by some Hausa youths and before you know it, a mob gathered at the site where I was renovating my house and demanded that we should stop the work. I then realized that the situation might become uncontrollable, so I rushed with my car to call soldiers who were posted at Yan Trailer [garage]. “Even before I got there, someone had informed them because they were already in their van heading towards the area. So I turned back and followed them. When we arrived at my house with the soldiers, the people popularly known as Yan Kasa [i.e. natives] demanded that the renovation work should be stopped. One particular Bajari man was the one that insisted that I must halt the work. I explained to the soldiers that I had already started this work when they proposed that the work should be stopped so that the matter can be resolved. One of the soldiers even collected my number and said that about five of us will go and sit down to resolve the matter. Then all of a sudden, we saw one Achaba boy [commercial motorcyclist] heading towards us with blood all over him. Someone was pushing his motorcycle, then another old man followed suit with similar injuries. I told my people to station the two victims so that they can serve as witnesses to us. So I asked the workers to stop the work, but the workers insisted that we must continue with work since we had already mixed the cement, sand and stone. “I told them that they should stop the work since I was the one that bought the cement, but they refused. So the soldiers said that they should continue the work with the cement that was mixed and when they finish it, they should then stop. But before you know it, we saw a group of youths from afar and they started stoning us. We later heard that they had set up a road block around Baptist area and they were beating people. So we all dispersed. That is as far as I can remember.” Asked if the Yan Kasa youth had told him why he must stop his renovation work, Alhaji Kabir said, “Yes, they said that they don’t want any Muslim to come back to that area again. That is what they said, that no Muslim should return to that area.” He was also asked if any Muslims live in the area, and he said, “There are some Muslims, but my house happens to be at the boundary which separates our area from their area. Down inside the area there were Muslims. There are even some that renovated their houses and returned during the [Ramadan] fasting period, but my house happens to be at the boundary and there are no Muslims there.” Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad also denied claims that the trouble started because he encroached upon someone else’s land while renovating his house. He said, “I have heard many versions of this incident, but this is the first time I am hearing this. I have been living in that area for over twenty years. It is not even a new house. It is an old house that was burnt during the 2008 crisis. I am just trying to renovate it. There is no truth in this allegation and like I said, this is the first time I am hearing this.”

Nigeria is not the only black nation where one can find both Christian and Moslems without any history of Holy War. The angry rioters pratice the theories they wer thought by their leaders. As a Christian, i refuse to hate moslems becuase they are human being but pardon me if I hate islamic MISLEADERS. Nigerian Islamic leaders are terrorist and Nigeria should stop protecting them. A terrorist ought not to have any legal right in any country that value peace.

With due respect, the world & none indigenes of Plateau State need to know that, Jos crisis cannot be separated from religion. Jos is under the attack of Islamic extremist Jihadists who could not conquer it a long time back. This terrorists have the full support of their counterparts who are in the helm of affairs in the Federal Government. This is clearly exhibited by the selection of mostly moslem soldiers sent by the GOC 3rd Armoured Division who himself is a moslem. These soldiers have protected the moslems and molested the christians, they have forced themselves into churches and arrested christian youth. It is clear that the said building that ignited the crisis was a mere camouflage. Let me be bold to say other Nigerians should not think this is an agenda just for Plateau State, it is just a matter of time. The earlier people understand the roots of the crisis the better for the nation. May the labor of our Heroes to keep Nigeria indivisible despite our faiths & creeds never be in vain !

So, if you are stopped from renovating your house, your next action will be to kill innocent christians coming from church. Think about what you are saying. This happens everytime.

Nigeria should be happy for been listed among countries to be watch for terrorism by the US Government because it is now obvious that the government does not have the capacity to handle the level of terrorism in the country and is grawing in a speed of jet. Nigerian government please corporate with the US government to help you fight terrorism in this country. 40% of plateau budget should go for peace building and security of lives and properties for meaningful development to take place. Am so sorry for our Hausa/Falani Brothers, no matter what effort, human schemes, plans you can never overcome JOS is not yours keep off please. Nigeria government should accept the reality now and take action to fight terrorism. To boom an American air craft does does not bring terror to any one in NIgeria as an individual maybe to the country as a whole but lives are terrorise everyday in NIgeria and the government does not care!!!! Now you have to do something if not you are all failures! God bless JOS (JESUS OUR SAVIOUR) THE LAND OF PEACE AND TOURISM. WE ARE HERROES.

the root cause of these uproars is negligable... At least past records indicate crisis in jos-north region as clearly political but this time and i assure similar to all, Slightly before noon on the wake of Sunday 17th January 2010. Reports gathered shows that muslim faithfuls cruelsomely attacked Christian victims in their worship centre(church)hmm i lack further comments...

Its very unfortunate dat we have a chief security of a state dat does not know were perpetrators of crises arrested in november last year were taken to, they came back and ignite another one. And yet call himself the gov. The worst of all is that he is still pointing accusing fingers to muslim youths who sell water and ride bike. Mr gov, even if all the muslim should leave the state for you, you can never occupy more than the size of your body at a time. know that one day you will not be on that sit, and nemesis will surely catch up with you and your allies.

Haba yen kasa, in kano state there is a settlment of christain mainly igbos. They are much to the extend that they produce councelors that are non muslims for their wards. This is common in vertually all the states in nigeria with people from other parts of the country settling in a state that is not theirs. I wonder why yen kasa dont want muslims on their land. Do they want to go to here after with the land.

Let's all unite as one people n pray for peace.

It is sad that some people are narrow minded who fail to see or view things rationally. The Hausa/Fulani of Jos are there before the Plateau State even i. e. when the same Plateau State was under Bauchi province. The Hausa/Fulani didn't beg to be on the Plateau, but are destined to be there either by birth or by settlement like any other Nigerian. But the most unfortunate thing you will see some people accusing us for this or for that. All the same we have come to stay, Jos is our land also. Please, learn to leave in peace with all and sundry.

The hausa/fulani,yoruba and igbos have always served as elected councilors under the jos north local government council in plateau state. It has been and still is so for so many years now.what else do the hausa/fulani ? There has never been trouble with the other ethnic groups like the igbos, yoruba, urhobo etc some of whom came to jos even before the hausa man dreamt of going there.Even then, they never claimed ownership of the land. The hausa jihadist have destroyed bukuru town, looted shops and killed innocent people, yet,no one talks about that. Are some lives more precious than the other? We are all equal before God and should be so even within the context of the Nigerian constitution. So many hundreds of innocent lives(Christians and Muslims alike) were lost during the boko haram crisis in Borno and Bauchi states, and not too long ago again in Bauchi state, yet the Jihadist never called for a state of emergency. In Jos,the same people as always, started the crisis, killing, maiming, looting and destroying properties and they turn around to ask for a state of emergency in Plateau. Lets tell ourselves the truth, you can not go to Kano,Bauchi or Sokoto and claim to be an indigene, even after living there for a hundred years. You may be tolerated if you are a Muslim, but try contesting for a political office and see what happens, they will remind you of your roots.I stayed in Kano for close to 2years,and not once have i ever heard them playing gospel music or airing a Christian pro gramme.Today the GM of plateau radio television is been accused of not airing Muslim prayers before commencement of pro grammes. Why not accuse the stations in Kano and other Muslim states of doing same with regards to Christian prayers,or is it a deliberate attempt to Islamise Nigeria?

I still say Nigeria is a jungle and there is no law in this jungle! A contry that follows not the constitution is bound to have these crazy happenings.... anyone that can't live in peace with others should go and kill themselves. GOVERNMENT this is a democracy let us see you prove it. seek out the cause of Jos crisis from decades past and thoroughly deal with it, if the constitution or religion is what encourages it then rectify it. We should be allowed to sleep with both eyes closed in this country. Hausa or Plateau's, Christians, muslims, aitheists and traditionalists ALL HAVE A RIGHT TO FREEDOM AND LIFE! we should live in another's state and be safe, other's may live in our land...but we still need to be safe whicheverway!

Ethnic conflict in northern part of Nigeria is endemic. It is a menace that has to be stopped. It's beyond the control of individual, we really, really need government intervention. Though, there isn't a classless society yet. The question here should be, how is social-order possible ? Emile Durkheim theory on "Anomie" where we have a Normlessness state, lawlessness state. Ethic-conflict will be a common phenomenon.Let's adopt the use of Organic and Mechanical Solidarity to solve the crisis in Jos.
