Yar'Adua is brain-damaged

Print print Email email Share Share

President Umaru Yar'Adua is seriously brain damaged, is not able to recognise anyone, including his wife Turai, and can no longer perform the functions of the office of the president, according to multiple sources who have spoken to NEXT on Sunday.

But this fact, which has left a nation of 150 million people rudderless and its government in disarray, is being concealed from the public through an elaborate scam orchestrated directly and energetically by the First Lady.

Turai Yar'Adua has barred all but two security and one civilian aide, and a legislator from having access to the president in a two-tier power loop of which she is the organising principal. The inner core consists of the president's chief security officer, Mohammed Tilde, and his military ADC, Mustapha Onoedieva; an infantry colonel from Edo State.

Through Mrs. Yar'Adua, this small knot works with Shehu Inuwa Imam, a member of the House of Representatives from Katsina State who is the president's childhood friend; Tanimu Yakubu, the president's chief economic adviser; and Sayyadi Abba Ruma, the agriculture minister. She is also aided by Inuwa Baba, the senior private adviser to the president on protocol matters.

Mr. Baba is an old Yar'Adua family friend, so loyal that he once got into prison uniform to stay behind bars with Shehu Musa Yar'Adua, the elder brother of the current president. who died in Abacha's gulag in 1997.

The group has blocked all direct access to the rapidly ailing president, said sources in Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, the Gulf region and in Europe and the US.

Despite several trips to Saudi Arabia, no other Nigerian government official, including the president's principal private secretary, ministers, and governors, has succeeded in seeing the president, who vanished from our country 50 days ago and has not been heard from since.

Grand deception

The people working frantically to keep up this ruse, including Mr. Yakubu, have also gone to great lengths to deceive the public, by claiming they have spoken to a president who is unable to speak and has lost all powers of cognition.

In fact, we can confirm that senior government officials lied when they claimed that Vice President Goodluck Jonathan, who is next in line to succeed Mr. Yar'Adua, has spoken directly to the president.

Although Mr. Jonathan subsequently went along with the charade, he has confided in several people in recent days that he did not speak to the president at all, according to informed sources. "He is trying not to create any friction because he knows he is about to become the next president," one source told our reporters.

In a telephone conversation with NEXT on Sunday, the Attorney General of the Federation, Michael Aondoakaa, emphatically dismissed any notion that the president did not speak to any of the state officials. Mr. Aondoakaa said the vice president confirmed this claim himself that the dialogue took place,"No, that cannot be the case," Mr. Aondoakaa insisted on Friday.

Mrs. Yar'Adua now relies on an all-Saudi staff, including drivers, security personnel and others, in the hope that no Nigerian outside her Gang of Three on the ground in Jeddah can tell for certain what is going on. Such is the nearly impregnable ring of steel thrown around the fading leader that even his principal private secretary, David Edevbie, was unable to see him when he recently travelled to Saudi Arabia, ostensibly to get the "president" to sign the budget. We have learned that Mr. Edevbie was restricted to his hotel, where he received a visit from the president's chief security officer, who collected the documents and subsequently returned them "signed."

He may never come back

Even the president's closest and most powerful aides have accepted that Mr. Yar'Adua may never return as president. "It is over for this president," said one source at the centre of the nation's political firmament. "The question is when and how."

Virtually all those who spoke to NEXT did so on condition of anonymity, reflecting the sensitivity surrounding the president's rapidly deteriorating health and their own political calculations during an inevitable transition.

While the end is virtually certain, several sources said the First Lady is hoping to hold off any acknowledgment of Mr. Yar'Adua's incapacitation in the hope of lining up a friendly successor, including an effort to position Adamu Aliero, the minister of the federal capital territory and a close ally of the First Lady, as the new vice president once Mr. Jonathan steps up to the presidency as mandated by the constitution.

Other political forces, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, as well as a claque of powerful former military officers led by Ibrahim Babangida, the former military president, are also pushing various candidates to be Mr. Jonathan's deputy (see accompanying story.)

However, many see Mr. Jonathan, a colourless former governor of tiny Bayelsa state and an accidental vice president, as a mere transitional figure who will hold power only until the next elections are held.

By that calculation, the ruling People's Democratic Party will honor its internal rotational arrangements to keep a northerner in the presidency for an additional term of four years. This would put a new vice president in pole position to become the PDP presidential candidate and be a sure bet to be the next president. The calculation is that, in Nigeria, votes do not count and the incumbent party is practically guaranteed to use every means to maintain itself in power.

In orchestrating her increasingly frantic efforts, Turai Yar'Adua' has proved an enthusiastic user of email as well as sms messages to friend and foe alike. She, with the gang wound tight around the president, has been working hard to sell the candidacy of Ailero to be Jonathan's deputy.

A government in chaos

The cloak of secrecy thrown around the president's status, and Turai Yar'Adua's determined push for an ally to succeed her ailing husband, have thrown our government into chaos. "Nobody knows what's going on," confessed one senior government official.

The cabinet, or federal executive council, is paralysed because it is in the dark. On a recent interview with BBC, for example, Ojo Maduekwe, the foreign minister, said, incredibly, that he had had "no cause" to speak to the president for the past six weeks! Information minister Dora Akunyili has issued statement after statement even though she has not had any contact with the president.

Yet the cabinet, which should by law start the process of declaring the president medically incapacitated, is refusing to lift a finger.

The sense of confusion has also stopped senior officials from coordinating their official actions. For example, according to our sources, Ahmed Yayale, the secretary to the government, had no idea that Mr. Edevbie had travelled to Saudi Arabia to try to see the president-until after the fact.

Even the security services are not immune to the governmental disarray. The director general of the State Security Services (SSS), Afakriya Gadzama is said to be angry that Mr. Tilde, the president's chief security officer, is no longer taking his calls.

As an employee of the SSS seconded to be at the president's side, Mr. Tilde is supposed to keep his agency in the loop regarding the president's safety.

That even the SSS chief is kept out of the loop is particularly jarring. Mr. Gadzama is after all widely considered a trusted aide of President Yar'Adua. The two go back as far as their high school days at Barewa College, where Mr. Yar'Adua, then a house prefect, appointed Mr. Gadzama to succeed him in 1971.

"If Turai doesn't trust Gadzama," said one source who is also a Barewa old boy, "that is how paranoid they have become."

This royal mess has left Abuja in a state of paralysis. "The government has ground to a halt," a senior official said last week. "Something will have to give very soon."

The former military leaders are in full control of the nation's politics. Yar Dua was their nominee, and Obasanjo was only a point man to ensure the delivery. Remember what they did following Abacha's sudden death when Abdulsalam while elected president languished in jail. And when Abiola died, didn't give it to one of their own in the name Obasanjo?

Are we not being taken for a ride by these northern cabals and feudal? Would they allow this to happen if it were an incapacitated southern president? Can we not separate amicably? After all we will not be the first or the last.

I cannot believe these people think they could get away with such blatant dishonesty. If the President was indeed "sound and fit" as previously claimed, would it have killed him to send a message assuring the citizens that he's alright? Now that they realize they couldn't possibly continue with such falsehood, they say he's brain-damaged? Since when? Crap! These people make me sick, especially his closest aides, yes, including his wife. It has become obvious that they are more interested in "saving face" than being open with fellow citizens.

The most certain thing in Nigeria politics is its uncertainty. How could a president and commander in chief of the armed forces of a nation like Nigeria abscond from his country for over 48 days, leaving the citizens with the burden of proof of his whereabout......., Ridiculous.

WE should stop praying for God to come and help.He is already angry with us! Clearly rules were broken! The nation was repeatedly lied to, Papers were forged and signed in the president's name, contracts were approved-to whom and for what? Lots of questions that need answering and Nigerians need to see actions being taken on their behalf even if it is for once. God wants us to do what is right not foolishly praying all the time!!!

Posted by Boli Atepa on Jan 10 2010

I wrote a comment here last week Yar'Adua was in a vegetative state. It is very obvious. If he wasn't, they would have gladly put him on video. They can't. They claimed he called, but can't play the voice. He's not dead; but he's not alive as well. It's common sense.

Posted by Victor on Jan 10 2010

This country is heading towards destruction if we're not careful. Wonder what we masses are doing about it. We cant just sit back and talk all the time. Actions need to be taken.

Keep on the goodwork 234next. The problem & Trouble has already started, its very clear that the president cabinet think that they can play over the interlligence of Nigerians and go free all this while, 1st the claime that the president situtation has improve and 2nd He has been in constant touch with some of the FEC members. 3rd He sign the budget on his sick bed? Any how!!! Why its that a Teleconference can't be arriange so that the president will talk to Nigerian as proposed by KEN N. former senate president to prove what those selfish FEC Members were claiming.

It appears that the country will disintegrate as experts have predicted and much sooner than predicted, if the "Kaduna Mafia" miscalculates. Sanford J. Ungar, in his celebrated book AFRICA: The People and Politics of An Emerging Continent, recounting the military coup which toppled Mallam Shehu Shagari on p. 149 said the following of the "Kaduna Mafia," a subterranean network of powerful Moslem soldiers, civil servants, and businessmen from the North, was worried that Shagari was allowing to much influence to Christians and might actually have permitted himself to be succeeded by and "infidel." With this in mind, we are provided with an excellent framework to analyse and understand the hesitation of the Northern block in the Nigerian Assembly to hand over the government to the Southern "infidel" Mr. Goodluck, the sitting Vice President, even when it is becoming clear that Mallam Yar'Adua may be unable to preside over the affairs of the nation. Let us pray and hope that the distegration of Nigeria does not become bloody entailing massive loss of innocent lives.

First of all, all these Yar adua cabinet people should resign for deceiving us all this while. I know that this is like talking to a deaf man. They would not comply. In as much as Yar adua is their man, relation, friend or whatever, he is our President, Nigeria President, father, leader, commander in chief of the nation. They owe this country the right to know the truth about their president instead of all these cover-ups and deceits. We may not have the perfect constitution, but the right thing to do is to allow the Vice President to step and continue the business of government. If they think they can do otherwise, they must be joking. As a result of their actions, the whole world is confirming Nigeria as a joke. All the people involved in the deceits, forgeries, lies, etc. should be prosecuted for treason. When the country breaks up, they should realise that they are the cause. In addition, they should realise that our constitution empowers the President to delegate power to the Vice as he deem fit. So all their manipulations to get a stooge Vice President will fail because a Vice President can only go a far as the President desire. As the Lord liveth, the good people of this country shall live to see the end of this drama.

Fellow country men, honestly I no longer know what to believe. From all indications, a few unscrupulous individuals with no interest of the country at heart have continued to hoodwink and manipulate the rest of us.We all are aware that behind all these deceits and webs of lies is the issue of succession. Whatever be the case, nothing short of following the constitutional provision for succession would be acceptable to the Nigerian people. We say no to the imposition of anyone outside the current vice-president to the office of the president. To do so will not only spell doom but also entrench anarchy in the system. If I may ask, "Is the constitution no longer the grund norm"?.Nigerians are watching.

In a way this is no news since the disappearance of the President for over forty days could only be explained by something like this if indeed he has not already crossed over. What I wonder is whether those who are scheming for the succession realise that by letting things get this far they have begun to justify their own eventual exclusion and our dear nation's reversal. Pity we seem to be blind to history.

When the senate presidency was allocated to ibos, they were allowed to produce several of them. when Ette from Osun state goofed, Dimeji from within succeeded him. Why must the North not produce a replacement for Yar' Adua if it becomes necessary? Nigerians are too quick to forget precedence and the sequence of previous events. Let the North produce a capable person and not another sickler! Period!

Actually, I don't think he is brain damaged, I think he is already deceased or is on life support. His doctors probably told the wife that he may not make come out of his coma until & unless he regains consciousness within a certain time period. Since he was already at the end stage of his illness anyway, since from what I hear, his disease an autoimmune disease, typically attacks all the vital organs, thereby causing the victims death. His kidneys are already gone due to this disease, and I think his liver and heart are now the latest targets. But he is definitely NOT CONSCIOUS. However, I fail to see why there is such secrecy though, at least supposedly, Nigeria is not a military state yet... By the way, Nigeria is not going to break up into several small states, since the first step in these situations will be for the country to turn into a military dictatorship. But the law is quite clear and if this president is dead or on his death bed, the constitution has already made provisions - in this case the provision is Goodluck Jonathan. Why this is so hard to grasp, I don't understand. Are we Nigerians sub-human? Do we not understand what it means to live a civil society?? Apparently not. NIGERIA - The largest "organized" nation of the black race on earth. Nigeria is supposed to be an example of greatness in world. Instead our politicians are passively acting like a bunch of mentally retarded inept, incapable people, who have no protocols in place and don't seem to understand the protocols in place currently. How can God be happy he created us?? What a shame and a complete embarrassment to God himself!!

We should bear in mind that yaradua will not choose to be in this situation, he is a human being whose life and death comes only from God, we all wish to be ahead of where we are now, but only with God approval. Please remember he is a father loved and cared for by his sibling just the way you do to your father, say good about others or you keep silent.

Nigerians, you have nothing to lose but your chains of bondage. What you fail to see is that as long as you allow your leaders to ride you roughshod and treat you like idiots, nothing will change in your country. Do you love your lives so much that you are willing to allow your children and your children's children to continue to live like slaves in their own country? If you want a better life for yourself in your own country, you have to demand it, and tell your leaders what is acceptable and what is not, like the Delta militants who fought and forced the government to the negotiating table. Until you do that you will continue to be taken for a ride like fools and those in power will continue to insult your intelligence by engaging in antics like the current laughable farce involving your president. No light, no water? Don't complain, because if you don't like it you should do something about it. Remember, the man dies in whom keeps silent in the face of tyranny and oppression.

I guess this is what Pastor Adeboye saw in his prophetic utterance about 2010, when he saw the suspension of the Nigerian constitution which in my interpretation means either a coup or a revolution. The National Assembly must take this prophecy very seriously because if a coup should occur they all could be slaughtered. National Assembly members should take this seriously because their jobs as legislators and their lives will be the 1st casualty of a successful bloody military coup. A word is enough for the wise!!!!

By the time the truth comes out that Yar'Adua cannot even begin to be regarded as a real entity we will see how he (Obasanjo) will provide a new surrogate....Aliero? What a JOKE. All these assume "Northern Cabal", "Kaduna Mafia", "Moslem this or that" shows the kind of boxed up prejudices we have in mind against our brothers. How well are we doing as a group in our own states? All these sentiments still exist, in various forms and groups. We all need to do away with all these and ensure the Nigeria CHARIOT moves on. Quite unfortunate that Turai and certain key government officials purportedly deliberately masterminded lies being told Nigerians about the true state of our President's health - very sadly, to achieve selfish and personal objectives. My people, in all sincerity let's get serious about praying for Nigeria and follow up closely with taking actions that will change our nation for the better, including flushing out all enemies of Nigeria as well as doing what is right in our own little closets. My deep sympathy goes to the 'outgoing' President, he is in God's hands now and frankly, he is safest there! And to the man whose name is Goodluck, I say there is no armour against fate! Seriously, we need to fervently pray for our country and more importantly, we should stop this 'siddon look' and vehemently reject and condemn mediocrity, blatant greed, selfishness and outright wickedness of these characters that determine our livelihood in our country. Seriously, let's start from the man in the mirror; by now, enough should be enough!

Obj would have quickly reconstituted the appeal court to frustrate those guys. It is easy to blame Yaradua and Johnathan. But which gov or president does not try to choose his successor? Abacha did not, and we know what happened to him. It is the only way they try to survive the shark-infested Nigerian political arena. Johnathan can only play it cool if he wants to survive. We should remember that a lot of us (including the Yahoo/Yahoo boys) posting here will do worse in their shoes

Next, Hoping your investigative journalism is right on target, my comments are that 'they' after trying to get the incumbent Vice President (VP) to resign so as to give room for fresh elections - to ensure that the 8-year slot of the North is not shortened, now want to get a loyal replacement for him as VP because the populace and the international community would be against either a forced resignation of the current VP or him meeting his God earlier than thought! Anyway, which ever way they go, Nigeria will remain in existence and life will surely go on. However, woe on to all the Honourable men and women (before now) who have smeared themselves during the course of this imbroglio and Blessed shall be all those that stood up for the truth! The surprise will be if our so-called leaders in all three arms of Government continue to be quiet and still, petrified in fear of exercising their awesome responsibilities. When all is done, I hope somebody will remember to question David Edevbie as to how he came about his signed supplementary budget. Nevertheless, let's not forget that all this are simply growth pains. Our Constitution, badly-drafted as it is, contains prescriptions for resolving these pains. Let us not depart from the Constitution.

A constitution in any setting is to take care of situations as they arise, as from the masters of democracy from whom we borrowed this system of government as it concerns the position of the president, there can't be allowed for any reason a vacuum; very ridiculus when a national assembly requested a letter of indisposition from a comatous preseident in the same vane accepted a supplementory budget with the forged signature of the man who made his health status a top secret. He has lost our sympathy and the only thing to do is swear in the vice president as enshrined in the constitution, while the perpertuators of the said misinformation and forgery be jailed FULL STOP! any further delay is tantamount to deniel with far reaching repercussions.

The other thing is that these same oligarchs hardly saw through the smoke screen. No be mistake say we be nigerians o, let's all pray for our president and wish for a ONE NIGERIA. If we wish our country well, it will be well wit it. Americans say "GOD BLESS AMERICA" and indeed , God is blessing them, Britain say "GOD SAVE THE QUEEN" and she's like 90yrs now. Let's just say "GOD BLESS NAIJA" and see what will happen!!! One love.

To be positive about the whole Yar’adua stuff, after 50 days without a president this goes to show how Nigerian people are tired for unstable country. All Nigerians yarn for is a stable and progressive country where every citizen goes about their business without hindrance in all part of the country. Our so called ‘standard 7’ leaders must learn from the calmness of the people in this difficult period; is about time Nigerians learned not to sell their votes to the wrong candidates. You can take their money but when you get to the ballot office Vote wisely because your vote will help elect fair leaders into offices. Your vote will make the difference Nigeria deserves. Your vote is a just course for your liberation. Your vote is your desire for self reliance. Your vote is your future destiny. Your vote is your willingness for liberation to fair governance. Your vote is a land mark laid for the future generation. ..........

I dont know what to believe anymore, regarding the health situation of mr president.Nobody, prays for the death of the president, but if God/ allah says his time is up, who are we to say otherwise. What bothers me and most Nigerians is the manner in which the issue is being handled. Most especially by the natl assembly, the northern muslim cabal and the so-called kaduna mafia. The constitution should be respected, and the vice president should be sworn-in with immediate effect. becos any attempt to scuttle or replace him will be met with the stiffest of opposition which could lead to the disintegration of the country along religious lines i.e christian south and muslim north. VP Goodluck Jonathan pls stand your ground, for the sake of peace and stability.

My fellow Nigerians let us forget those sentiments that it is North or South - it is a group of hijackers from Nigeria. At least you have seen the write up by eminent Nigerias calling for constitionality of succession - meaning,Goodluck Jonathan or no Democarcy in Nigeria. Let us not miss this opportunity like we messed up June 12 to a tribal issue, this issue is beyond hausa, igbo, kanuri etc. Who is Aliero or Ali Gusau. Is Nigeria the dynasty of the North West. We have better candidates from even the so call North West. May God guide us and make us stand up for justice.

Sometimes I find it vey difficult to grapple with the fact that we are believers in one Almighty God as we often claim in our make-believe religiuos inclinations, muslims and christians alike. Have we suddenly forgotten that we are mortals in the hands of our Creator? It is Him Who is the absolute giver and taker of life. The fact that President Yar'adua is ill today is a pointer to the above fact. Have we consider at least for once that it is not impossible that as at the time Yar'adua was flown out of this country he may have been unconscious and may not be able to send that vital letter to the National Assembly informing them of his intending trip for the medical checkup in Saudi Arabia. If this was his situation as at the time, how could he have signed a letter? Moreso, assuming he is still in that same state, it means that he is not refusing to allow his Vice-President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to hold forte for him as widely being speculated. ABSOLUTE POWER BELONGS TO GOD AND HE GIVETH IT TO WHOSOEVER HE WILLS. So, if God says Goodluck will be President of Nigeria, NO ONE CAN STOP HIM. As such, let us guard our uterances and tread softly for the sake of the collective peace we enjoy in this our beloved country. YAR'ADUA, WHEREVER YOU ARE AND IN WHATEVER STATE YOU FIND YOURSELF PRESENTLY, I WISH YOU WELL. I WISH YOU A FAST RECOVERY SO THAT YOU CAN RETURN BACK TO NIGERIA TO TAKE UP YOUR RIGHTFUL POSITION AS THE PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE ARMED FORCES OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA.

It is rather unfortunate that our President is terminally ill and I give my heart out to him and wish him a speedy recovery. Be that as it may, I believe Nigeria has come to a point when we should not be talking about zoning in the political arena. At this moment Nigerians deserve a government that has 1.Direction 2.Integrity and above all 3.a TOTAL COMMITMENT TO THE WELFARE OF THE PEOPLE. We have had Northern presidents and southern presidents and the country is still where it is. If you go into the core northern states, you will be shocked to see the abject poverty that their people are forced to live in and so with the South. What Nigeria needs is a true federation, in which the constituent parts are allowed to freely exploit their God given natual resources, generate revenue from same and determine the levels and quality of life they so desire(westhern/nomadic) while paying royalties to the federal government to run the central government. Let me use Cross River as an example. The state has identified itself as having an advantage in tourism and chooses to boost same for the economic and social upliftment of its people thru the construction of the TINAPA business resort amongst others but the federal government took over 2 years to give approval for its operation - why do people who have no brains sit on top of those who have. There is no power in Nigeria because if you want to bring in any power related equipment, you must get approval from the same PHCN that is saddled with the mandate to provide same. I know of a simple BIOMASS power plant that can generate 11,350kw of ppower from burning 440tons of chicken manure - 1.You provide affordable poultry products, 2. You power a small industrial cluster and its environs and 3. You create the much needed JOBS so PLEASE WHO IS DECIEVING WHO. It is not enough to steal the country silly and then send your children to schools abroad(what goes around, comes around) they end up loosing the parental guidance that the poor children back home engoy(MUTALLAB) WAY FORWARD FOR NIGERIA 1. The constitution must be redone and the electoral bill passed. 2. Put square pegs in square holes. Our information desemination system is very poor. The people should always be informed so we don't make assumtions. Today we are tagged as TERRORIST because the wrong people who do not know how to handle international crisis were appointed. 3. You and I must stop sitting on the fence. We must develope non violent ways of saying 'NO' to bad governance. What happened to 'booing' and 'jeering' at a non performing office holder or passing around a vote of no confidence via sms or printed material, or even snooping for his phone number, email and send hime a note. In fact send it via DHL he will think it is an honorary award from some scam university abroad and open it very happily. If you get to the fuel station and the attendant asks you to pay more call 2 or more people and start chanting an anti corruption song. If the police man misbehaves tell him 'nicely' not to forget that you could be his son or brother. WE NEED TO STIR EACH OTHERS CONSCIENCE Ask Mr Mutallab if he has anymore sons to blow up our politicians. - All of us must in our individual little ways put pressure on our political elite to do things that are sound and good for Nigeria. Most of them did not go for xmas because of fear of kidnappers. It should not end there, they should be made to understand that our vote is our right and should therefore justify their offices. 4. It is very painful to learn how incapacitated we have become as a nation and how battered our image is in the international circle. When we are being ruled by liers and dishonest people who got the the corridor of power through dishonest and dubious means, what else do we expect. It is unfortunate that we can sacrifice the stability of a nation of about 150 million people because of the interest of a single family. Where is our commitment to the words of our national anthem (In love and honesty to grow, and living just and true...). May God have mercy on us.

Posted by Julie Sanusi-Williams on Jan 11 2010

Nigerians have always believed and have reason to that Providence will intervene to pull Nigeria from the edge of Abyss. Let's not overplay our hand here. This time we may not be so lucky. The danger which the country faces now comes from the insiders in the current moribund administration who are afraid that any orderly transfer of power to the sitting Vice President Goodluck will effective close their pipeline to the country's treasury as the privilege of looting is transferred to Goodluck's associates. As for the Nigerian public, it would not make much of a difference. In gangster capitalism as is practised in Nigeria, when one group of gangers hands over to another group, be they civilian or military, the looting continues. The "elected" officials, in particular those in the states and national legislatures, are glorified thieves. The best the hapless population can hope for in a failed state is that the handover be accomplished with minimal spilling of the blood of the innocent. There is a possibility albeit unlikely that Mr. Goodluck, when he assumes the leadership, will rise to the occasion and become a leader the country has been waiting for. However, his role in the charade about the health of President Yar'Adua casts some serious doubt on that possibility. Military coup by the Northern officers afraid that power will go to a Southern "infidel" is becoming more likely. I pray that I am wrong as it will presage the break-up of the country for good.

Posted by Afolabi Akinola on Jan 11 2010

It is a pity to see Yaradua going the way he is going. Well may God have mercy on his soul, he has tried his best, a complete gentle man who meant well for his father land, i pity him a lot, if it has been Buhari, i will have cast a stone on him and pray for his early exist, but for this man call yaradua, it is a sad end

I am not his member but I like everything about him against people's expectations, I like people who can stand their grands and speak their mind, such people are the conscience of the people. pessimistic as this may sound, as at today, there is nothing called nigeria. This is a group of divided people, enemies at heart but friends by lips. We are divided along religious, tribal, ethnic and cultural lines. A few who are supposed to lead us to oneness do contrary. the rich are getting richer, the poor are getting wreched. No job, no light, no education, no infrastructure, no fuel, no road, no leadership, nothing works. WE keep praying but God has answered our prayers but we do not accept His reply. believe it or not, religion does not exalt a nation, it only divides it, only righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people.Tell thos liars and slavemasters in Abuja and state houses all over this nation, God will judge then suddenly and very soon This affliction is too much. Even the colonial masters were not this wicked. Our cry is arising to heaven, judgement is around the corner for the wicked polititians, the northern mafias, including saraki and all that take part in enslaving Nigerians

Dont let us jupadize the life of our unborn children. Lets prevent our children from living like slaves in their own country, If we want a better life for ourself in our own country, we have to demand it, and tell our leaders what is acceptable and what is not, like the Delta militants who fought and forced the government to the negotiating table. Until we do that will continue to be taken for a ride like fools and those in power will continue to insult our intelligence.

The other comments of lamentations, anger, heartbreak, helplessnes, and even the prevalence of all of our nation's problems, confirms that the the minority that controls nigeria is not the only problem. Nigerians just want to sit and scream God. They have refused to realise and accept that for a better COUNTRY, sacrifices will be made. For a better tomorrow and most of all, for equality.

We await official report on this. However, if it is true that our C-in-C had been bedridden and incapacitated and we have been getting lies from his officials then this calls for serious investigation and prosecution. The issue here is that there is systematic decay in our institutions otherwise, this is enough for the police and sss to move into action and bring all the people who could have "forged" the president's signature and those who claimed they spoke to him whilst they did not and all that. In addition, if the house of senate and reps are trully the reps of the people, instead of faffing around and sitting like lame ducks, they should without bias start an impeachment process as it is obvious the president cannot perform his function. Above and beyond this, i wish Umaru a quick recovery and safe trip back to his family. Umaru is a good man but the power hawks around him cannot allow his meek attitude to play out. obviously, obasanjo threw this country into this mess and he is making fun or jest out of it by clapping his hands at the airport. Long live this country. We can only be great again if we can have a state of the union address and really create a new path of sustainable development. We have been infested with clowns and mediocres who call themselves leaders.

Its a shame that a country like ours that is blessed with many highly educated intelligent/God fearing men/women had to be saddled with a bunch of selfish/greedy/devilish animals as legislators who will sell their soul or those of their children in order to sat in power. But fellow Nigerians, all is not lost, remember what happened to Abacha (Divine intervention). I feel sorry for Mr yar'Adua because I believe that he has good intention for the country, but unfortunately he was surrounded by groups of individual who sees him as a means of linning up their own pockets without care of who will get hurt in the process of achieving the devilish aims. I sincerely hope that God will save us from those evil minded people who are presently ruling the country because Nigerians are good people and deserve the right to be represented by individuals who will have their interest at heart.

It is a shame the way politics is played in this country. Is it not obvious that Nigeria is no different from Somalia that has not had a Government since 1991? The only difference is consistent anarchy that is a major attribute of Somalia. The Japanese Finance Minister resigned based on health reasons last week and i realise that Nigeria is just so backward. How can one woman hold 150 million people ransom? Nigeria is just an epitome of lawlessness.

Posted by timetoresist on Jan 11 2010

it is really sad that this man had to reach the point of death before being allowed to resign. in a more humane society, where politics is not a do or die affair, the man would have probably not run for president, and even if he had, he would have resigned earlier last year. i don't know who put pressure on this poor man, who, if left on his own, would have probably lived to any older age with a measurable degree of good health. our political system in full of people with no respect for fundamental human rights, human life and human dignity. in a society of just men, he would have moved on to a nice retirement after his governorship, but in nigeria, power games are power games, and only God can rescue any man that will not rescue himself.

The fate of nigeria relation with US is partly due to the leadership lacuna. it is an indication of and the height of irresponsibility on the part of our leaders. we look forward to god delivering us from this disastrous situatiion. Little wonder they have not added to our socio-economic wellbeing over the years.

THAT THE PRESIDENT'S HEALTH STATUS IS ENSHROUDED IN AN UNCCANY MYSTERY, SHOWS THAT OUR GOVT OFFICIALS ARE MORALLY BANKRUPT. IN THE FIRST INSTANCE, WHAT DOES A FIRST LADY HAVE TO DO WITH GOVERNANCE, IF NOT THAT WE HAVE MOSTLY A CROP OF SELF-SERVING POLITICAL DEMAGOGUES. MAYBE WE SHOULD SWEAR-IN TURAI YAR'ADUA SO THAT SHE CAN BE AN EXECUTIVE PRESIDENT STRAIGHT FROM BEING A WIFE TO A MAL-ADVISED ONE. WHAT ON EARTH HAS SHE TO DO WITH CONTROLLING THE FLOW OF INFORMATION? THE PRESIDENT IS PUBLIC PROPERTY, NOT HER PERSONAL MEAL TICKET. I KNOW SEVERAL OFFICIALS ARE MEAL-TICKETING ON YAR'ADUA; THAT IS WHY THEY DON'T WANT TO ADMIT HIS BRAIN DAMAGE OR THE MALIGNANCY OF HIS SITUATION. MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON THE HUNGRY CROPO OF GLUTTONS WHO CALL THEMSELVES MINISTERS AND SPECIAL ADVISERS

Incredible! What if a situation of EXTREME national importance crops up (eg. involving protecting the country from external interference).... Who takes charge of the country? Who will be the one to makes those tough decisions? Hmmm, we are courting danger. In some other economies, the military would have intervened. National assembly; Be bold enough to deal objectively with the issue at hand and allow the constitution to hold sway so that the next president can steer our rudderless Nigerian ship off the brink of the abyss before it is too late. Enough is enough! Haba!!!

i'm really sad; sad for our country, sad for our people; and we wonder why a country like the US can accuse us of being terrorists even though there's compelling evidence disproving so. i read a comment that said we should split, like the Biafrans tried to do but we've failed to realised even after 49 years that we,the people, Nigerians themselves are the problem. the problem of the US is that they are just bullies;they are the most powerful but they know that it is not for long so they try to delay economies that they feel could be a threat to their own survival as a nation. Nigeria's problem is that the foundation on which this country was built is faulty and the only way to solve that problem is to break down and build from scratch our moral and spiritual as it relates to our Nationalism. this change must begin in our homes;right from the day the child is born and set his/her mentality straight right from the beginning. if this article is indeed true and i won't be surprised if it is, then it has only strengthened my resolve and my belief that the best and fastest way to solve our leadership problems is to retire every politician between the ages of 45 and above because that generation is lost and can never be saved, mentally and morally bankrupt.

It is sad that Nigerians including myself have all taken a none charlatan attitude to such sensitive issue. We have allowed this mad men to make us make us feel hopeless and clueless as to what it entails to run a country democratically. These people have made us think that there is an African brand of Democracy or is it Nigerian brand. I cannot believe we have fallen for what they are selling to us. We are giving room to the Military guys to come back and if they do I would not be surprised as the group we call Politicians are the most dubious bunch of illiterates.

I am just so concerned that the constitution has not been invoked. I would not like to see a situation where someone without blood ties to president Yar' Adua becomes the president.

The problem of power sharing amicably in Nigeria amongst the three tribes has been a curse caused by our people many many years ago and it would take only God to reverse the curse for Nigeria to move forward successfully. In Western World, the culture of discipline, respect, fair and justice, loyalty, honesty, and maturity governs the government power, not characters such as deceit, dishonest, indiscipline, and stupidity roaring amongst our leaders in Nigeria regardless of the gravity of their education. What is happening in Nigeria with the office of Mr President would have been taking care of successfully should this occur in Britain for example without having to spend donkey years sitting round the table exhausting peoples' wealth of ideas. It's not that Nigerian leaders and their cohorts are naive of solution/s to the political teething problems we have in Nigeria but it's a pattern that the old school boys wants to continue digging their filthy hands in the treasury "rich getting richer and poor getting poorer" So selfish and greedy in their thinking. Majority of our politicians are sick in brain. I think they need supervision and a role model like Barrack Obama to help them out of the mere mess. Where are there senses like other leaders in Western World? It is a disgrace that a beautiful Paradise like Nigeria is governed by nuisance. "Enough is Enough of Western World making mockery of our so called "politicians". It's time to allow people of Nigeria with genuine political mission and dream coupled with the "right state of mind" to rescue our Glorious Nation from sinking Ship since 1st October 1960. Nigerians abroad wants to come home but not when the government lacks stability, consistency, uncertainty and full of corrupt leaders. 'It is a pity that pity cannot pity itself'. What we need in Nigeria its a complete random cleansing of ghost politicians and allow those who have political divine calling amongst the Governors to rule the Nation. A word is enough for the wise.

My friends and brothers, I am not a nigerian, but I can empathize with your feelings; but you must realize that the Nigerian government has for many years been deteriorated. Its form has never been in harmony with government as it should operate because it has not recognized that the sovereign authority to govern was placed in the hands of the people. This is mandated by God. Any government that do not recognize this basic principle, is dead from the start. Nigeria has been blessed with resources that can generate tremendous wealth, but yet, it has not risen out of obscurity. Some day the Lord is going to seal up those resources if the leaders don't start operating according to correct principles.

Let the truth be told and let the Country go on. Furthermore, make it easy for your hussy to depart to the place beyond, if it is his time and Allah's time. Let him free and release the country from confusion. I will keep praying for her.

If indeed the alleged president medication condition is true - my heart goes out to his family. Afterall, the president is first and formost a human being inrespective of the polical decision making process and the behaviours of those around him in time of needs. What l find disappointing with those so-call or wound-be leaders is that they promise the mass a better health care provision and state of the art hospital and yet they and their family member does not want to seek medication assistant in the country - it is this double standard that gets to me. I wish the president well and i hope whoever is advising his wife is bright enough to realised that information is very important and that the public should be kept informed about the mental state of the first citizen - he is afterall the president of a country if that is to be believed.

We need to institute a system where no tax payers' monies get to the office of the First Lady be it at State or Federal Level. If they must be relevant there should be no benefits of the state authourity extended to them beyond security aides which should be a maximum of 5. Whenever they embark on any project no state money must be donated enither should their business be close to state apartments beyond kitchen affairs. All their expenditures should be independently audited to know the donors/sources. We must learn from this incident, the office of first lady is a curse which must be broken. All protocol accorded them must stop as they were never voted for.

Has there been a difference in the lives of the average Nigerians in the last 50 days? This simply shows us that the country runs itself. What is the difference between a country and a nation? We are just a geographic region, with no individual identity. We know Nigeria, but does Nigeria know any of us? We are all anonymous, that is why all these atrocities happen there. Politicians and public officers can't be accountable for their actions, Armed robbers and Kidnappers operate with impunity. We are faceless, and as a result we have been reduced to the level of animals. We kill to eat when hungry, and sometimes just for the fun of it. Nothing has changed in Nigeria since independence, no matter how many seminars we hold (Vision blah blah blah etc). The solution is so simple, and staring us all in the face. History. All Nigerians please read the "Mystery of Capital" by Hernando Soto. Good luck to you all. Bring back the old anthem 3rd Stanza "Oh God of all creation grant this our one request, help us to build a nation where no man is oppressed".

We are a nation (sorry, I mean people) very easy to rule. We call for nation wide strike action on issues of less importance. Let the whole nation (I mean people) go on strike and see whether those wicked and heartless law makers will not be shaken up. I feel for the President as a person and I pray for his quick recovery. What I do not understand is the fear of handing over until he recovers! At least we do same in other establishments. I guess the president can not write anything in his present condition and others are afraid of taking such decision on his behalf. Power is possessive and that is why the FIRST LADY is holding on tight to it. How I wish she uses the same amount of energy for scheming to pray for her husband. She must have been the brain behind the President still in office until today. That man would have left to take care of himself long ago. As for all the CABALS, just know that judgement day is nearer than yesterday.

How can the President of a country be sick, absent or brain-dead and there is official denials, mis-information and or cover-up? Isn't the Secret Service as a body supposed to be responsible for his security? The exact whereabouts or condition of Yar'Adua can not be determined, yet we have a fully functioning National Assembly.
